March 29, 2015 Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion
Gospel reading Mark 11:1-10
When Jesus and his disciples drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethpage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to
them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately on entering it, you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and
bring it here. If anyone should say to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ reply, ‘The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.’” So they
went off and found a colt tethered at a gate outside on the street, and they untied it. Some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing,
untying the colt?” They answered them just as Jesus had told them to, and they permitted them to do it. So they brought the colt to Jesus and put
their cloaks over it. And he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the
fields. Those preceding him as well as those following kept crying out: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the
kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest!”
Brief commentary: Today we begin the Chr istian Gr eat Week: although all “times and all seasons belong to Him,” Christians nonetheless
honor this week as different, as ‘Holy’. Holy Week stands at the foundation and core of the Christian experience of salvation, but also at the foundation and core of all history, for this is the Passover of Christ’s suffering, death, burial and glorious resurrection. The celebration of Palm Sunday
(‘Hosanna Sunday’ in the churches of the East) commemorates the triumphant entrance of Jesus of Nazareth through the gates of Jerusalem on the
threshold of his suffering. Similarly, we welcome Christ anew through the door of our hearts, our homes, our parishes and communities. With
palms (ancient symbols of victory) we hold them high joining the choir of ‘hosannas’ (“save us” in Hebrew), and bring these blessed palms into
our homes to mark them as homes of believers. This Sunday too is called Passion Sunday, because as a Church we join the recital of the entire
Passion narrative of a gospel. Indeed, we are included as participants in the reading, with the awareness that somehow we are all participants in the
suffering of the Lord. And joining him in his Passion, we hope in his mercy to have a share in his glorious resurrection. Both the reading from Isaiah and the traditional praying of the twenty-second psalm about a righteous sufferer, applied to Jesus by the earliest Christians, allow us to understand the suffering of Jesus – as an act of total loving and redemptive self-donation – as the fulfillment of God’s saving plan for the world. The
Christological hymn found in Paul’s letter to the Philippians expresses in a few words the core narrative of Jesus’ incarnation, solidarity with the
human race, humility, obedient suffering and ignominious death on the cross, his resurrection and supreme exaltation as Lord “to the glory of God
the Father.” It is the story of how God “who so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son…” It is the proclamation of the Christian gospel
of the redemptive and victorious love of Jesus Christ. By his entrance on a donkey through Jerusalem’s eastern gate, Jesus was associating himself
with the prophetic description of the Messiah’s humble coming found in the book of the prophet Zechariah. When Jesus arrives in Jerusalem, surrounded by the crowds including the poor, outcasts, sinners, and infirmed, he reminds the rulers of what they should be doing in service to the people. By so doing, Jesus was also showing that his version of ‘messiah’ was not as a politico-military ruler, but as the humble servant of the Lord

Lectura del santo Evangelio según San Marcos 11:1-10
Se acercaban a Jerusalén, por Betpage y Betania, junto al monte de los Olivos, y Jesús mandó a dos de sus discípulos, diciéndoles: “ld a la aldea
de enfrente y, en cuanto entréis, encontraréis un borrico atado, que nadie ha montado todavía. Desatadlo y traedlo. Y si alguien os pregunta por
qué lo hacéis, contestadle: “El Señor lo necesita y lo devolverá pronto.” Fueron y encontraron el borrico en la calle, atado a una puerta, y lo
soltaron. Algunos de los presentes les preguntaron: “¿Por qué tenéis que desatar el borrico?” Ellos les contestaron como había dicho Jesús; y se
lo permitieron. Llevaron el borrico, le echaron encima sus mantos, y Jesús se montó. Muchos alfombraron el camino con sus mantos, otros con
ramas cortadas en el campo. Los que iban delante y detrás gritaban: “Hosanna, bendito el que viene en nombre del Señor. Bendito el reino que
llega, el de nuestro padre David. ¡Hosanna en el cielo!”
Comentario breve: Hoy comenzamos la Gr an Semana cr istiana: aunque “todos los tiempos pertenecen a El,” los cristianos aun honran esta
semana como diferente, como ‘Santa’. La Semana Santa esta en la fundación y centro de la experiencia cristiana de salvación, pero también en
la fundación y centro de toda historia, porque esta es la Pascua del sufrimiento, muerte, entierro y gloriosa resurrección de Cristo. La
celebración del Domingo de Ramos (‘Domingo de Hosana’ en las iglesias del Oriente) conmemora la triunfante entrada de Jesús de Nazaret por
el portón de Jerusalén en la víspera de su pasión. Igualmente, recibimos a Cristo nuevamente por las puertas de nuestros corazones, hogares,
parroquias y comunidades. Con palmas (antiguo símbolo de victoria) las levantamos uniéndolas al coro de ‘hosannas’ (“sálvanos” en Hebreo),
y traemos estas palmas benditas a nuestros hogares para marcarlos como hogares de creyentes. Este domingo también se nombra como
Domingo de la Pasión, porque como Iglesia recitamos unidamente el narrado completo de la Pasión de un evangelio. Ciertamente, nos
incluimos como participantes en la lectura, con el conocimiento que de alguna manera somos todos participantes en el sufrimiento del Señor. Y
uniéndonos a el en su pasión, esperamos recibir de su misericordia el poder compartir en su gloriosa resurrección. Ambas lecturas, de Isaías y
de la oración tradicional del salmo veintidós sobre un justo sufriente, que fue aplicado a Jesús por los primeros cristianos, nos permiten
comprender el sufrimiento de Jesús – como un acto de total auto-donación amorosa y redentora – como el cumplimiento del plan de salvación
de Dios para el mundo. El himno cristológico encontrado en la carta de Pablo a los Filipenses expresa en pocas palabras el centro del narrado de
la encarnación de Jesús, su solidaridad con la raza humana, su humildad, obediente sufrimiento y muerte ignominiosa en cruz, su resurrección y
suprema exaltación como Señor “para la gloria de Dios Padre.” Es el relato de cómo Dios “tanto amo el mundo que entrego a su Hijo único…”
Es la proclamación de la buena nueva cristiana del redentor y victorioso amor de Jesucristo. Por su entrada en borrico por el portón al Este de
Jerusalén, Jesús se asocio con la descripción profética de la venida humilde del Mesías predicha en el libro del profeta Zacarías. Cuando Jesús
llega a Jerusalén, rodeado por la multitud que incluía los pobres, los marginados, pecadores, los enfermos, les recuerda a los jefes de lo ellos
debían de estar haciendo para servir al pueblo. Por actuando así, Jesús enseñaba de que su versión de ‘mesías’ no era de un poderoso políticomilitar, sino del ‘siervo humilde del Yahvé’ y salvador compasivo del pueblo. Tal entrada fue entonces cambamente inspiradora y grandemente
provocadora, y así puso en camino el proceso de los que lo oponían y que llevaría a su muerte.
