Gospel reading John 12:20-33
Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover Feast came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.”
Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen,
amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life
loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be.
The Father will honor whoever serves me. “I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But it was for this purpose that I came to this
hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it and will glorify it again.” The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder; but
others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come for my sake but for yours. Now is the time of judgment on this world;
now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” He said this indicating the kind of death he
would die.
Brief commentary: As we dr aw near to the Gr eat Week of the Chr istian calendar , the biblical r eadings intensify with the cor e themes that will char acter ize
the celebration of the Paschal Mystery. Just as ancient Israel is losing its sovereignty to Babylonian conquest and subsequent exile in the sixth century BC, Jeremiah
envisions a restoration and transformation of the people that God himself will achieve. Jeremiah prophesies a “new covenant” that God will establish with the people:
it will be a covenant inspiring the heart, based on a personal knowledge – or relationship – with God, and one in which sins would be forgiven and the people redeemed. Our psalm today is a well-known penitential psalm, expressing heartfelt contrition and trust in God’s gracious forgiveness. As we near Holy Week, the expectation of “the new and everlasting covenant” in the sacrificial love of Jesus, and anticipated in the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper, fills us with a
desire to repent more completely of sin, and a hope and eagerness to relive in liturgy and in our lives the mysteries of our redemption in Jesus Christ. The Letter to the
Hebrews (perhaps the oldest surviving Christian sermon) presents Jesus as the great intercessor, the true high priest, who with “supplications, loud cries, and tears”
prayed and suffered, and now is the “source of salvation” for all who believe. Because Jesus, out of great love, so identified with us in full solidarity, and continues
always to do so, every person – without exception – can come to God trusting in God’s mercy and forgiveness. The gospel reading, for its part, takes us to the threshold of the Paschal Mystery. It notes that pilgrims were journeying to Jerusalem for the Passover: this would be the Passover when Jesus would suffer and be glorified.
That Jews and Jewish converts from other lands were looking for him was a sign to Jesus that the world was ripe for his gospel; it was a sign confirming that the
events of the redemption were now imminent. With dramatic words Jesus expresses his own sense of what is drawing near; yet, he does so not in a foreboding tone,
but one in which he is in full understanding of the meaning and significance of his nearing suffering and glorification. The heavenly voice powerfully confirms his
intuition. Jesus is confident that “when he is lifted high” on the cross “he will draw everyone” to him: all who have come to love and believe in Jesus can say that
they are the fulfillment of his prophecy. Though “troubled” at his suffering ahead, he is resolute and obedient to the Father’s will, for he knows that “unless a seed
falls to the ground and dies, it cannot produce fruit.” In today’s gospel, Jesus is certain that his suffering and death will not be in vain, but it will yield fruit forever.
Indeed, two thousand years later, we can testify to how right he was, how his redemptive suffering and death on the cross has transformed countless of lives and
brought so much good to our world. Christians too need to possess the same beliefs as Jesus, that their efforts, suffering, struggles, on behalf of the gospel and the
kingdom do bear fruit. That the seeds of faith, hope and love that they plant will yield fruit, sometimes in unforeseen ways; and that their own lives and deaths are not
in vain. God will have the last word, the word of eternal life. As we draw near to Holy Week, may the seed of God’s Word today take root in the soil of our hearts,
and grow and produce abundant fruit for the kingdom, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Lectura del santo Evangelio según San Juan 12:20-33
Entre los que habían subido para adorar durante la fiesta, había unos griegos que se acercaron a Felipe, el de Betsaida de Galilea, y le dijeron: “Señor, queremos ver a
Jesús.” Felipe fue a decírselo a Andrés, y ambos se lo dijeron a Jesús. El les respondió: “Ha llegado la hora en que el Hijo del hombre va a ser glorificado. Les
aseguro que si el grano de trigo que cae en la tierra no muere, queda solo; pero si muere, da mucho fruto. El que tiene apego a su vida la perderá; y el que no está
apegado a su vida en este mundo, la conservará para la vida eterna. El que quiera servirme que me siga, y donde yo esté, estará también mi servidor. El que quiera
servirme, será honrado por mi Padre. Mi alma ahora está turbada. ¿Y qué diré: “Padre, líbrame de esta hora?” ¡Si para eso he llegado a esta hora! ¡Padre, glorifica tu
Nombre!” Entonces se oyó una voz del cielo: “Ya lo he glorificado y lo volveré a glorificar.” La multitud que estaba presente y oyó estas palabras, pensaba que era
un trueno. Otros decían: “Le ha hablado un ángel.” Jesús respondió: “Esta voz no se oyó por mí, sino por ustedes. Ahora ha llegado el juicio de este mundo, ahora el
Príncipe de este mundo será arrojado afuera; y cuando yo sea levantado en alto sobre la tierra, atraeré a todos hacia mí.”
Comentario breve: Mientr as nos apr oximamos a la Gr an Semana del calendar io cr istiano, las lectur as bíblicas son enfocadas mas intensamente sobr e los
temas principales que caracterizaran la celebración del Misterio Pascual. Así como cuando el Israel bíblico pierde su soberanía a la conquista babilónica y su exilio
subsecuente en el sexto siglo AC, Jeremías visualiza una restauración y transformación del pueblo que Dios mismo lograra. Jeremías profetiza una “nueva alianza”
Dios establecerá con el pueblo: será una alianza que inspire al corazón, basada en un conocimiento personal – o relación – con Dios, y una por la cual los pecados
serán perdonados y el pueblo redimido. El salmo de hoy es un salmo penitencial bien conocido, expresando contrición sincera y profundamente sentida, y confianza
en el perdón gratuito de Dios. Aproximándonos a la Semana Santa, la expectación de la “nueva y eterna alianza” ratificado por el amor sacrificial de Jesús, y
anticipado en la institución de la Eucaristía en la Ultima Cena, nos llena con el deseo de arrepentirnos mas completamente del pecado, y con una esperanza y ansia
para revivir en liturgia y en nuestras vidas los misterios de nuestra redención en Jesucristo. La Carta a los Hebreos (probablemente el sermón cristiano mas
antiquísimo que ha sobrevivido) presenta a Jesús como el gran intercesor, el verdadero sumo sacerdote, quien con “suplicas, llantos y lagrimas” oro y sufrió, y ahora
es la “fuente de salvación” para todo creyente. Porque Jesús, por su gran amor, tan se identifico con nosotros en complete solidaridad, y continua así haciendo para
siempre, cada persona – sin excepción – puede venir a Dios confiando en su misericordia y perdón. La lectura del evangelio, por su parte, nos lleva al umbral del
Ministerio Pascual. Relata que peregrinos iban hacia Jerusalén para la Pascua judía: esta seria la Pascua cuando Jesús sufrirá y fuese glorificado. Que judíos y los
conversos al judaísmo de otras tierras lo buscaban, fue para Jesús señal de que el mundo estaba dispuesto para su evangelio; era señal confirmando que los eventos de
la redención eran ahora inminentes. Con palabras dramáticas Jesús expresa su propio sentido de lo que se aproximaba; sin embargo, el no lo hace con un tono
sombrío, sino con un en que el esta consiente del significado e importancia de su sufrimiento y glorificación que se acercan. La voz celestial poderosamente confirma
su intuición. Jesús esta segura que “cuando sea levantado” en la cruz “atraerá a todos” hacia el: todos quienes hayan llegado a amar y creer en Jesús pueden decir que
ellos son el cumplimiento de su profecía. Aunque “turbado” sobre su sufrimiento cercano, el esta resoluto y obediente a lo voluntad del Padre, porque el sabe que “si
el grano de trigo que cae en la tierra no muere, queda solo; pero si muere, da mucho fruto.” En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús esta seguro que su sufrimiento y muerte no
será en vano, pero dará fruto eternamente. Ciertamente, dos mil años después, podemos testificar que correcto estaba, como su sufrimiento redentor y muerte en cruz
ha transformado innumerables vidas y traído tanto bien al nuestro mundo. Los cristianos necesitan poseer la mismas convicciones que Jesús, para que sus esfuerzos,
sufrimientos, luchas, por el evangelio y el reino den fruto. Las semillas de al fe, esperanza y amor que sembramos darán su fruto, algunas veces en maneras no
previstas; y nuestras propias vidas y muertes no serán en vano. Dios tendrá la ultima palabra, la palabra de la vida eterna. Aproximándonos a la Semana Santa, que la
semilla de la palabra de Dios hoy tome raíz en el lodo de nuestros corazones, y que crezca y produzca fruto abundante para el reino, por el poder del Espíritu Santo.
