Veneration of the Traveling Relic of St. John Paul II

Final Blessing for the Departure of the Relic
This is the official Relic of Pilgrimage of the Postulation of John Paul II.
The Relic is accompanied by the Sisters of the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
Nearly every human being has a cherished treasure from a loved one: a family heirloom, a favorite picture, a lock of
hair, jewelry and so on. These items help us to be connected to our loved one and remember them, especially after their
death. There is something natural and very human about keeping and treasuring an heirloom. These heirlooms are a type
of relic. Drawing from this natural cherishing of heirlooms, Catholics have always held dear to their heart relics of
saints. These relics could be an actual bone, vial of blood, an item used by the saint such as a prayer book, or a cloth
touched to the saint’s body.
Just as we have a natural desire to remember our loved ones or be close to them through cherishing an heirloom, even
more, we should cherish our brothers and sisters of faith – the saints. The saints are an example of faith. They teach us
ways of holiness. They right now live in heaven. And, they are interceding for us to join them in heaven. Relics are a way
for us to be connected to our holy brothers and sisters. Because the relic is connected to the saints who are eternally
joined to Christ in heaven, relics are greater than a family heirloom. They are like a conduit to heaven with a divine power
that flows from the holiness of life that they lived.
Since the beginning, the Church has upheld the practice of venerating relics. This veneration is not offering adoration or
worship which is due only to God. Veneration is the honoring, cherishing, respecting, and devotion of heart given to the
saints. Veneration is an expression of our friendship and love for the saints – our brothers and sisters in heaven. This
veneration flows from our admiration of the saint’s holy life and their life with God in heaven.
Various pious practices have developed in order to show appropriate veneration to a relic and the saint. Relics are
placed in sacred and artistic vessels called reliquaries. The faithful often make pilgrimage to the shrine of a relic. Or, the
relic travels to different places in order to allow for veneration. The faithful spend time of prayer in the presence of the
relic. They may meditate upon the holy life of the saint, ask the saint’s intercession, or offer thanks for favors received.

HOW CAN I RECEIVE EXTRAORDINARY
GRACES ON DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY?
To receive the ocean of graces the Lord
promised on Divine Mercy Sunday, the only condition is to
receive Holy Communion worthily on that day by making a good
confession in preparation and living in such a way that you remain
in the state of grace to be able to receive that Holy Communion
with great trust in His Divine Mercy. Through the promise to
grant complete forgiveness of sins and punishment on the Divine
Mercy Sunday, our Lord asked St. Faustina to be sure to perform
acts of mercy, and to come to Him in Holy Communion with great
trust in His mercy.
“Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, but
there must also be acts of mercy” (Diary, 742).
“The graces of My mercy are drawn by means of one vessel
only, and this is trust. The more a soul trusts, the more it will
receive” (Diary, 1578).
Our Lord’s promise to grant complete forgiveness of sins and
punishment to those who having gone to Confession, receive Holy
Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday is based on private
revelation approved by the Church. The faithful are always free to
accept it. Non-acceptance, however, cannot be based on a doubt
in the efficacy of the Eucharist, Christ’s true presence, which is
the source and summit of Christian life and holiness.
The grace of the complete remission of sins and punishment is
theologically possible and does not contradict revealed teaching.
DO I HAVE TO RECEIVE COMMUNION AND
CONFESSION ON THE ACTUAL DAY OR VIGIL?
Communion, yes. Confession, no.
Cardinal Macharski, the Archbishop of St. Faustina’s own
archdiocese of Krakow, Poland, wrote a pastoral letter to all his
priests on 1/30/85, on how to prepare for and celebrate Divine
Mercy Sunday. In it he said that all of Lent should be a
preparation to celebrate Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday
worthily. The Sacrament of Reconciliation should be received
sometime in Lent, not put off until the last minute (Holy Week).
We go to Confession with the intention of repentance and to
amend our lives, and we should live in such a way as to be worthy
to receive Holy Eucharist. If we have any venial sins, a good Act
of Contrition will take away those sins.

A LENTEN “ACT OF CHARITY” OPPORTUNITY
Lent: a spiritual journey for personal reflection, prayer, fasting, and acts of charity.
Your St. Cecilia Parish Social Concerns Ministry is seeking donations for their annual
Easter Buckets Project. 200 Easter Buckets, filled primarily with hygiene and food
items, will provide much-needed assistance as well as delightful joy to men, women, and
children in need of our support. Additionally, 100 Easter treat bags will be delivered to
St. Mary’s Home for Boys. Your donation of the following items for this project will be
a gracious “act of charity.”

Reflection on the Gospel: The Woman at the Well
After the woman at the well spent time with Jesus, she went
to tell everyone about what she had experienced, and the
people she encountered were led to go listen to Jesus for
themselves and came to believe, too. Our encounter with God
in the Mass isn’t over when we leave the church. We are sent
forth with a mission to share the Good News with others.
St. Francis is famous for saying, “Preach the Gospel at all
times. Use words if necessary.” Sometimes, it is more
effective to show someone God through our actions, rather
than tell someone about God with our words. This week,
see what you can do with your actions to preach the Gospel.
FOR A FRUITFUL LENT
Holy Spirit, lead me during Lent as you led Jesus into the
desert to confront Satan. Be with me as I confront my own
temptations and my failures to live out the promises of my
baptism. Give me insight and courage so that I can face the
truth about myself and turn back to God in fidelity to the
Gospel. I ask this in the name of Jesus, my Lord and Savior.

Al hacer un LÁTIGO DE CORDELES en el templo y
usarlo para echar a los comerciantes y vendedores, y
desbaratar sus negocios, Jesús acentúa la absoluta soberanía
y majestad de Dios, y su repudio por cualquier práctica que
lo lleve a disminuir o menospreciar
En este acto, Jesús está manifestando claramente una de
las exigencias implícitas en el primero de los 10 MANDAMIENTOS que escuchamos articulados en la primera
lectura de la Misa de hoy del libro del Éxodo. Jesús no tiene
nada en contra de que la gente haga sus negocios, pero en
este gesto expresa que, incluso en nuestros negocios, debemos
siempre respetar y seguir fielmente las leyes y los mandamientos de Dios. No hay excusa para emplear nuestros
negocios con el fin de estafar a gente vulnerable y sencilla, ni
para convertir el templo de Dios en un mercado lleno de
gritos y distracciones.
¿Sirvió esta ocasión para enfurecer a los sacerdotes y
negociantes? Sin duda. Pero lo hizo de todas maneras,

EL MARTES: RELIQUIAS DE SAN JUAN PABLO II
Tal como se avisó el domingo pasado, una reliquia de este
extraordinario santo de nuestros tiempos llegará ESTE
MARTES, 10 DE MARZO, y tendremos el honor re recibirlo
en Santa Cecilia.
Estamos todos invitados a venir a la iglesia esa mañana
entre 7:30 y 11:00 y unirnos a la comunidad para
veneración, y para pedir por nuestros enfermos. El P. Cary
nos comentó que sería apropiado traer (o invitar) a las
personas enfermas que conocemos para asistir aunque sea
un rato y pedir la intercesión de este santo ante el trono de
Dios por recuperación, sanación y gracia. La Misa se
celebrará, como todos los días de semana, a las 8 AM.
PLATOS DE ARROZ PARA LOS POBRES
Nuestra parroquia tiene la costumbre de invitar a las
familias a participar en el programa de PLATOS DE
ARROZ durante la Cuaresma. Si usted desea participar,
quizás con su familia, puede recoger una cajita al final de
Misa, o durante la semana en la oficina parroquial.
Los miembros de la familia pueden poner sus monedas en
la cajita, y después de concluida la Cuaresma, pueden traer
lo que juntaron al templo o a la oficina parroquial.
Contaremos el dinero y se escribe un cheque a la agencia
nacional que trabaja directamente con familias de las
regiones más pobres del mundo.
CELEBRACIÓN DE MATRIMONIO EN COMÚN
Estamos formulando planes para poder celebrar una
boda comunitaria durante el verano (agosto15) para
parejas que desean que su matrimonio sea bendecido en
la Iglesia. Si les interesa, hablen con el diácono, o con en
P. Cary.
ORACIÓN CONTEMPLATIVA
Hay un grupo que se reúne los sábados por la tarde.

LAS SIGUIENTES CLASES PARA MATRIMONIO
… comenzarán el lunes, 30 de marzo. Las parejas
necesitan inscribirse y conversar antes de esa fecha con el
P. Cary. Hagan una cita a través de Erika.
FORMACIÓN DE ADULTOS EN LA FE
Nuestra iglesia ofrece un programa de formación para
adultos QUE ESTAN SIRVIENDO en algún ministerio y
desean crecer en su cercanía a Dios. Además, provee una
ayuda eficaz para los que quieren PROFUNDIZAR EN
SU CONOCIMIENTO de nuestras enseñanzas, en
dimensiones fundamentales.
La formación se da principalmente a través de talleres
un sábado al mes, desde marzo hasta noviembre. Los
talleres se llevan a cabo en Tigard, en la parroquia San
Anthony, entre 9 AM y 4 PM.
Si está interesado en más información en relación al
programa, llamado “Discípulos Hoy, Apóstoles Mañana”,
hable con el Diacono Bill.
PLÁTICAS PARA BAUTISMO
… de niños menores de 5 años se ofrecerán para
padres y padrinos los días JUEVES, 9 y 16 de ABRIL,
de 7 a 8:30 PM.
Inscríbanse en la oficina, recordando de traer el
certificado de nacimiento del niño para bautizar.
