Alamo Beer Company could unite the near Eastside

After more than a decade of busi­
ness, the Alamo Beer Company
will celebrate Texas’ Siege Week
with the grand opening of what will
be the largest downtown brewery in
San Antonio.
Many Eastside residents have
worried that the brewery beneath
the historic Hays Street Bridge
would become another economic
project that failed to meet expec­
tations. Sunset Station was an
example they used. Alamo Beer
has already established a place in
community events like San Antonio
Beer Week, and plans to participate
in several Fiesta events.
“We’re excited for people to
come out and enjoy tours and our

Este sábado 7 de marzo cientos
de mujeres se reunirán a las 10
a.m. en la Plaza del Zacate en
Milam Park, ubicada en 500 W.
Commerce, para marchar en con­
memoración del Día Internacional
de la Mujer, el cual se celebra en
varios países el 8 de marzo.
Los logros de las mujeres en
los ámbitos de la economía, la
política y en los aspectos sociales
y personales se celebrarán en este
día especial. Así mismo, la mar­
cha también tiene como propósito
concientizar a la comunidad sobre
injusticias que ocurren hacia las
mujeres localmente y en otros
países.
Las injusticias incluyen violen­
cia doméstica, explotación sexual,
la falta de igualdad salarial y la
opresión en instituciones guber­
namentales, entre otras.
Empezando en la Plaza del
Zacate, las mujeres marcharán
por las calles N. Santa Rosa, Do­
lorosa, Market, Villita, Nueva y
culminarán en Travis Park, donde
habrá actividades para niños y
poetas recitando sus escritos.
Similarmente, la Comisión de
la Alcaldesa del Estatus de las
Mujeres presentó su comida
anual el lunes por la tarde para
celebrar la aproximación del Día
Internacional de la Mujer y para
recaudar fondos para becas que
serán otorgadas a mujeres con
necesidad financiera.
“Nuestro propósito es ayudar a
que mujeres cumplan sus metas
profesionales y sabemos que a
veces necesitan ayuda financiera
para continuar con sus estudios”,
comentó Sheryl Sculley, gerente
de San Antonio. “Nuestras becas
proveen dinero para el costo de
colegiatura, libros y hasta guarde­
rías para que mujeres puedan
continuar sus estudios y mejorar
sus vidas”.
Durante la comida, la alcaldesa
Ivy Taylor habló sobre la impor­
tancia de la educación para el pro­
greso de la igualdad de la mujer.
La alcaldesa destacó que uno en
cada cinco adultos es analfabeto
en San Antonio.
“No hay oportunidades para
mujeres que no pueden leer o
hacer matemáticas, están estanca­
das en trabajos sin futuro o atadas
a asistencia pública o a relaciones
dañinas”, expresó Taylor. “Tene­
mos que darles las herramientas
para superarse”.
Recientemente, la Biblioteca
Pública de San Antonio lanzó
programas de educación para
adultos y la ciudad ha apoyado a
la organización sin fines de lucro
“Each one, Teach One” para me­
jorar la alfabetización en adultos.
La alcaldesa comentó que
lo ideal sería que las niñas se
gradúen de la preparatoria, con­
tinúen sus estudios y obtengan su
diploma universitario, especial­
mente en el área de las ciencias y
la tecnología.
Además, sugirió que encuen­
tren a una mentora que las pueda
apoyar y servir como modelo a
seguir.
Sculley añadió que para el éxito
es importante continuar apren­
diendo y entrenando aún después
de recibir un título universitario.
“Esas experiencias fuera de
tu zona de confort te harán más
competitivas”, explicó Sculley.
Taylor es la primera alcaldesa
afroamericana en la historia de
San Antonio y Sculley ha sido la
gerente de la ciudad por 10 años.

Universitarios en protesta por desaparición de estudiantes en México

Our Lady of The Lake (OLLU)
realizaron el pasado viernes una
vigilia como un esfuerzo más por
mantener latente en la conciencia
pública el caso de Ayotzinapa, po­
blación rural en el estado mexicano
de Guerrero, donde desaparecieron
43 estudiantes normalistas en año
pasado. Y donde, a pesar de la
detención de los supuestos insti­
gadores del crimen, el gobierno
del presidente Enrique Peña Nieto
no han podido esclarecer satisfac­
toriamente el delito.
Aprovechando el tiempo libre
entre sus clases, los estudiantes
realizaron la vigilia para recor­
dar a las autoridades mexicanas
su obligación de esclarecer los
hechos y con la esperanza de que
los organis­m os internacionales
que luchan en pro de los derechos
humanos ejerzan presión para que
se resuelva el caso y se castigue
a quienes resulten responsables,
además del matrimonio detenido y
una docena de presuntos cómplices
y autores materiales del crimen.
Ignacio Treviño, uno de los
dirigentes estudiantiles de esta
expresión universitaria, informó
que después de esta primera mani­
festación de protesta, el grupo
universitario se propone participar
en futuras manifestaciones y vigil­
ias ante el Consulado General de
México en San Antonio.
Treviño añadió que en las pro­
testas ante la delegación consular
mexicana, la unidad estudiantil
de OLLU –que forma parte de
un grupo mayor que forman or­
ganizaciones laborales de San
Antonio– seguirán clamando
justicia ante las organizaciones de
derechos humanos de las Naciones
Unidas y organismos similares en
el ámbito panamericano.
Como resultado parcial de las
investigaciones incompletas, los
medios informativos de México
indican que hasta el momento se
encuentran detenidos 97 individuos
como presuntos responsables de la
desaparición y asesinato de los 43
futuros educadores.
José Luis Abarca, alcalde de
Iguala Guerrero, y su esposa, María
de Los Ángeles Pineda, también
están detenidos en una prisión
federal como presuntos conspira­

el público ha bautizado como la
“pareja diabólica”, hay relatos
documentados por los medios
informativos que realmente mo­
tivan indignación popular, como

quemaron vivos y los ultimaron
con disparos de armas de fuego.

Stars” los tres finalistas: Gabriela
Vergara, Judith Grace y Gabriel
Coronel mostraron gran pasión,
creatividad y energía para pre­
parar sus platillos en la cocina de
“Top Chef” Boston.
Después de rigurosas pruebas
Judith quedó como primer gana­
dora de la noche acumulando un
total de $20 mil para la Fundación
St. Jude Children Hospital, cuya
misión es ayudar a niños con
cáncer.
Gabriel Coronel quedó en
segundo lugar con $10 mil
para Friends for Kids, una or­
ganización que ayuda a niños
necesitados.
Y Gabriela Vargas se convirtió
en la última asistente de cocina
(eliminada), no sin antes colectar

Martin para combatir el tráfico

Local film director finds
success in ‘Book of Ruth’

At the 37th annual Cinefestival
last Tuesday, a gathering of wideeyed audience members crowd
around San Antonio director
Pablo Veliz, eager to share their
various interpretations and give
compliments for his latest film
‘Book of Ruth’.
Some pitch story concepts – one
woman hands out a business card
with the title of her movie scribed
in quotes.
Others ask questions, offering
their different viewpoints on
the premiere of Veliz’s seventh
feature film.
Veliz accepts each graciously
and discusses his film with those
in attendance.
“I hope to employ different
things that are not as easy to listen
to, and not as easy to understand.
But challenging,” Veliz said in
regards to the film. “So that our
San Antonio community are chal­
lenged to create stories as equally
complex, passionate, and resonate
with what I believe to be the heart
of independent filmmaking.”
Veliz originally made a splash
in 2005 with his debut ‘La tra­
gedia de Macario’, which was
accepted at the Sundance film
festival.
Over seven feature films, he
has ascended as one of the lead­
ing ambassadors of San Antonio
independent filmmaking.
“The inspiration behind mak­
ing ‘Book of Ruth’ is a constant
commitment to tell stories seldom
told and to employ the unconven­
tional,” Veliz said. “In reality,
with the small budget that we had
and the small resources, all you
have is a story. However uncon­
ventional, however unpalatable.
But ever so committed and full
of substance.”
Veliz and a small crew of four
ventured into the sweltering des­
ert in the Big Bend area, the steep
cliffs swallowing all sound in its
vastness.
Within the limits of a restrictive
budget, the crew relied on sparse
equipment – they lugged around
bags bulging with batteries and
memory cards and utilized natu­
ral light by holding instillation
boards as reflectors.
The desolation of far west
Texas provided the perfect setting
for the films plot, the landscape
stretching for miles devoid of
any life.
In the film, a woman escapes
capture from the border patrol,
and is lost in the desert. She is
destitute and relies on a mal­
functioning compass, swaying
between the absolution of her
faith and forsaking any glimmer
of hope. Her lips crack from dehy­
dration, and she stumbles towards
an uncertain fate, struggling with
flashbacks of an unhappy past.
As she escapes from the clutches
of oppression, the viewer winces
from the anxiety of her tribula­
tions.
Its an accomplishment for such
a minuscule budget and stands as
a testament to San Antonio inde­
pendent filmmaking.
The film tackles multiple sub­
jects – examining gay rights,
religious contemplation, and im­
migration – a daunting task that
proves ‘Book of Ruth’ may be
Veliz’s deepest effort to date.
“At the end of it all, we made
this film to share, for people
to watch it,” Veliz said. “They
would either be touched, moved,
inspired, or disturbed. All are
welcome. All are great things
for me.”

Food Bank garden soil safe to reap what is sowed

After reviewing data from a third
and independent study, city officials
told La Prensa that the soil removed
from the convention center and
hauled to the San Antonio Food
Bank’s vegetable garden on High­
way 151 is free of any malignant
contaminants.
San Antonio’s Metropolitan
Health Department requested this
independent study from South­
west Research Institute after two
conflicting environmental reports
conducted in 2013 reemerged a few
weeks ago, indicating that contami­
nants in the soil could potentially
harm public health.
“The results provided indicate
that the food bank’s garden soil
is safe and the vegetables are safe
for public consumption,” District 6
Councilman Ray Lopez said. “I’m
incredibly glad of that because I
have an opportunity from time to
time to consume some of that food.”
Dr. Vincent Nathan, assistant di­
rector of environmental and safety
at Metro Health, said that the min­
erals found in the soil are actually
essential nutrients.
We looked at 23 different miner­
als and sampled the soil in three
different areas, as well as the veg­
etables and fruits, and all of them
were below the Texas background
levels, except for Selenium, but
selenium is high in this part of the
state anyway so we expect high
levels, but it was still below the
tier one residential background,”
Nathan explained. “There was
nothing unusual about that.”
The San Antonio Food Bank
distributes food from a variety of
sources and the crops that come
off the field represent about one
percent of the total volume.
“As a meaningful one percent,
we put that product in quarantine
and we didn’t distribute it until we
could find out if we had an issue
or not,” Eric Cooper, president
and CEO of the San Antonio Food
Bank, said. “We launched an in­
vestigation, hired a company by
the name of PSI and they did a very

Military Medicine and VA ramp up sharing patients in S.A.

In a move that helps veterans, and
active-duty military patients and
their families, local VA and military
medical facilities have dramatically
increased their work-share agree­
ments over the past two years and
they are seeking to add more.
Brooke Army Medical Center
(BAMC), the Air Force’s 59th Medi­
cal Wing and the South Texas Veter­
ans Health Care System (STVHCS)
currently have a combined 15 shar­
ing agreements that give patients
quicker access to health care by re­
directing them to treatment facilities
with convenient appointment slots.
Current agreements between
BAMC and STVHCS cover a wide
range of services including equip­
ment sterilization, medical services,
surgical services, the Integrated Dis­
ability Evaluation System (IDES),
transition services at the Center
for the Intrepid, and Ear, Nose and
Throat surgery. For BAMC, the most
recently approved sharing agreement
covers ENT surgical services, where
the number of VA patients seen has
increased dramatically since October
2013.
“The services provided and work­
load performed under these shar­
ing agreements provides valuable
wartime skill sustainment for DOD
medical professionals, fuels 37
Graduate Medical Education pro­
grams, enhances access to care for
VA beneficiaries while simultane­
ously optimizing federal funding,”
said Col. Evan M. Renz, BAMC
commander.
Agreements cover surgical ser­
vices including but not limited to
general surgery, ear nose and throat,
gynecology and orthopedic surgery.
Similar agreements between the
59th MDW and STVHCS cover
blood bank services, sterilization,
IDES, radiation oncology, surgical
supervision, and medical services in­
cluding but not limited to endoscopic
ultrasound, sleep studies, dermatol­
ogy laser treatments, and dialysis
treatments.
Patients with access to the 59th
MDW’s North Central Federal Clinic
also benefit from the program.
“Work share agreements between
the VA, BAMC and the 59th Medi­
cal Wing improves efficiency and
effectiveness across a multitude of
military healthcare services,” Maj.
Gen. Bart Iddins, 59th Medical Wing
commander said.
“We are saving taxpayer dollars
at a time when responsible steward­
ship of government resources is
paramount. Appointment slots, that
would otherwise remain vacant, are
now filled.” Iddins said. “Military
medicine is focused on providing
world-class, high quality, safe health­
care to our number one customer - the
patient. We remain patient-centered
in all we do, and work share agree­
ments bolster this commitment.”
Looking ahead, the San Antonio
Military Health System, which inte­
grates Army and Air Force health care
services in the local area, is currently
discussing several potential new
agreements with local VA facilities.
These include expanded OB/GYN
services - STVHCS is currently pay­
ing for newborn deliveries at civilian
medical facilities. BAMC has the
capacity to perform this work and the
increased number of deliveries would
be valuable for the OB/GYN resi­
dency program. Talks are progress­
ing. The organizations have agreed
in principle and now must work out
the details, draft the agreement, and
submit for approval.
Other areas being discussed for
possible work-sharing include ra­
diology services, vascular surgery,
inpatient behavioral health, and
hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
“South Texas Veterans Health
Care System has a strong partnership
with DOD, and we look forward to
pursuing other opportunities in the
future to continue to provide the best
health care possible to both VA and
DoD beneficiaries,” said Dr. Julianne
Flynn, STVHCS chief of staff.
There are also discussions for shar­
ing initiatives with the Texas Valley
Coastal Bend Veterans Health Care
System, which could potentially
involve the provision of surgical
and medical services to VA patients
living south of San Antonio.
This VA system covers a large,
mostly rural area with a shortage of
civilian specialty and sub-specialty
providers. Talks are still in the early
stages, but BAMC has agreed to
take cases as space permits on a feefor-service reimbursement method
according to federal fee schedules.

Antonians will hit the streets for
the 8th Annual Síclovía.
If you’ve never been to South­
town and want to see it as the ad­
age goes, up close and personal,
this is your chance.
Síclovía is the one day when
the streets of a section in San
Antonio are shutdown so people
can ride their bicycles, skates

Alamo Beer will keep busy cre­
ating new specials in addition to

On Thursday morning the brewery
will unveil Mark Lemon’s paint­
ing “The Storming of the Alamo,
March 6, 1836,” which commemo­
rates the historic battle.
Lemon, a Georgia-based artist
spent 3,500 hours creating the
world’s largest and most historical­
ly accurate depiction of the battle.
The 8 ft. x 15 ft. painting will hang

“So much of the Alamo’s his­
tory has been over stylized and
overdramatized, but I avoided that
in the painting,” Lemon said. “The
painting is the best visual teaching
tool on the battle, and it needs to be
seen, particularly by young Texans
and schoolchildren.”
Lemon said he used to wonder
why there weren’t more monumen­
tal scale paintings of a battle that is
so important to Texas history.
“Well I don’t wonder that any­
more. I know why there isn’t be­
cause it just about killed me doing
that. I was fiercely motivated to do
it, but it still almost defeated me.”

porte. Me siento contenta de haber
estado con ustedes, tienen talento
para el baloncesto, síganlo jugando
y –sobre todo– no abandonen sus
estudios, cumplan con sus tareas y
así se estarán formando un mejor
futuro. Este es mi deseo para todos
ustedes”, apuntó Hammon.
Entre preguntas a Green, uno de
los basquetbolistas participantes
hizo la siguiente: “¿Cuál fue tu
reacción cuando ganaron los Spurs
el campeonato?”.
A lo que Green respondió: “Si
alguna vez tu equipo ha ganado
un campeonato, si ya lograste esa
meta, qué más puedo decirte. Y
si no lo has ganado, te diré que yo
estuve muy contento y emocionado
sintiendo cosas bonitas que nunca
había experimentado. Sigan traba­
jando en su estilo de juego para que
logran ganar campeonatos”.

Los Spurs y NBA honrarán al aficionado hispano

La National Basketball Associa­
tion (NBA), que preside el comisio­
nado Adam Silver, por noveno año
consecutivo estará presentando los
coloridos y espectaculares eventos
del calendario de juegos de noches
latinas, titulado “Noches éne•bé•a”.
El calendario tiene programados
14 partidos para celebrar el ex­
celente respaldo que los aficionados
y jugadores de la NBA de toda
América Latina y las comunidades
hispanas de los Estados Unidos.
En comunicado de prensa, la
NBA anunció que de los partidos
de “Noches éne•bé•a”, siete serán
televisados nacionalmente en los
Estados Unidos a través de ABC,
ESPN y NBA TV. Estos incluirán
transmisiones en vivo, celebra­
ciones en arenas, con uniformes
especiales que serán usados por los
ocho equipos.
Los jugadores de los 30 equipos
que integran la liga de baloncesto
profesional NBA vestirán una
camiseta de calentamiento especial­
mente diseñada por Adidas, que será
el proveedor oficial de mercancía
deportiva de la liga.
Para las “Noches éne•bé•a” de
las dos primeras semanas de marzo
la característica especial de los
eventos serán que los uniformes
mostrarán los nombres de los equi­
pos según cómo se conocen popu­
larmente entre la población latina.
Por ejemplo, San Antonio Spurs
serán “Los Spurs”, el Miami Heat
será “El Heat”.
Los aficionados podrán obtener
la mercancía “Noches éne•bé•a” en
tiendas como la NBAStore.com (en
línea), NBA de la Fifth Avenue en
la ciudad de Nueva York, en tien­
das de los estadios de los equipos
participantes.
En casa (AT&T Center) los
Spurs, en calidad de campeón de la
NBA, vestirán en dos partidos las
camisetas de manga corta con la
leyenda “Los Spurs”.
El primer partido lo disputarán el
próximo domingo 8 de marzo contra
el visitante “Los Bulls” de Chicago
en el horario de las 12 p.m (ABC).
En el segundo cotejo del viernes
3 de abril a las 7:30 p.m. tendrán de
rival a los Nuggets de Denver (NBA
League Pass).
El rol de juegos de las “Noches
éne•bé•a” lo abrieron el domingo 1
de marzo “Los Bulls” contra Clip­
pers de Los Ángeles con transmi­
sión por la cadena ABC.
“El Heat” jugó el pasado lunes
contra “Los Suns” y se transmitió
por NBA TV.
Este miércoles 4 de marzo se
jugarán dos partidos: como local
“Los Rockets” de Houston contra
Grizzlies de Memphis, con trans­
misión el canal NBA League Pass.
“El Heat” enfrentará a Lakers
de Los Ángeles, a transmitirse por
ESPN.
El viernes 6 “Los Wizards” de
Washington se miden ante Miami,
encuentro que será televisado por
NBA Pass League.
El sábado 7 también se progra­
maron dos partidos: “El Heat” va
contra Kings de Sacramento (NBA
League Pass) y “Los Knicks” de
Nueva York irán contra Pacers de

“Los Lakers” el domingo 8 en
el Staples Center recibirán a “Los

Como dato curioso sobre la
“Noche éne•bé•a” del 6 de marzo de
2014 en acalorado partido entre el
local “Los Spurs” y “El Heat”, que
fue denominado ‘partido de revan­
cha’ (2013 NBA Finals rematch), el
entonces autollamado “King James”
LeBron James –quien fuera alero
titular del bicampeón Heat– tras suf­
rir derrota con marcador de 111 a 87
y limitado en 19 puntos dijo al final
haberse sentido incómodo vistiendo
la camiseta manga corta, que según
él le quedó bastante entalla­da. Esto,
según James, le molestó a lo largo
del partido en el que no pudo de­
sempeñar su acostumbrado estilo
de juego.
LeBron se dio a la tarea de subir
su inconformidad a la red social
por lo que de inmediato la base
de seguidores de San Antonio lo
comenzaron a criticar sin salirse de
