HARVEST DINNER
Table Reservations: Kay Williams will begin taking table reservation next Sunday thru
November 9th. They are on a first come first served basis and go fast. You can have up to 8
guests per table and each table is responsible for providing a silent auction item as well as a
dessert auction item.
Donations: In previous years many of our serving supplies and food have been donated by
our parishioners. If you are interested in making a donation for the meal preparation or
tableware, please see Marlene Bartram.
Auction Items: Items can be turned in on any Sunday to Marianne Smith or Jennifer
Schelbert. We will accept auction items up to the week of the dinner. There are sheets on the
counter by the TV in the Gathering Space that can give you ideas on what to donate for the
auction.
Raffle: Raffle sales will continue every Sunday until the dinner. Tickets are $1 each. Take a
chance on winning either the beautiful quilt or hotel stay. The drawing will be the night of the
dinner.

Dear friends,
Picking up from where I left off last week on my journey, we were in Lisieux with St. Therese. I loved the
setting there, it was a beautiful town in Normandy. After spending the day there with St. Therese and her
family, we got back on the bus and headed down the road. Our next destination was Mont Saint-Michel.
On the way there, just a bit off the path of the highway system of France, we detoured to visit the American
cemetery at Normandy. This was a powerful experience. I regularly do burials at Tahoma National Cemetery
in Covington, but that did not prepare me for the experience I had in Normandy. It was an overcast morning
and the grass was still wet with dew. Wandering from the visitor center to the cemetery I had no idea what the
Lord had in store for us. Immediately, I was struck by the enormity of the cemetery at which nearly 10,000
American soldiers are buried who gave their lives defending our freedom. The tombstones are all lined up
with military precision as far as you can see. Most of them are crosses and there are a few Jewish Star of
David markers as well. Although I was in France, I was standing on American soil and this made a deep
impression on me at that moment. We made our way to the chapel, most of us in silence, struck in awe of our
surroundings. Once we had all gathered in the chapel we began to sing our national anthem, the Star Spangled
Banner, led by our cantor Amy. Hardly anyone had a dry eye as it was so beautifully resonant in the chapel
and in our hearts. We then sang America the Beautiful and ended in prayer for all those who gave their lives in
that hallowed place and in gratitude for the freedom we enjoy because of their bravery.
I then stood overlooking the beach, trying to imagine what it must have been like that terrible day on June 6,
1944, when the allied troops arrived at Normandy. So much violence. So much courage.
No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

As we were walking through the cemetery our Polish guide and driver pointed out to me something very
American. The driver pointed to the edge of the grass perfectly trimmed a quarter inch off of the sidewalk. He
said, “This is American.”
I had never felt more patriotic in my life than I felt that day. I truly am proud to be an American. Perhaps this
reflection would have been more appropriate closer to Veteran’s Day as it is soon upon us, but it fell to this
week in the timeline of my reflections. I am so grateful for the blessings we enjoy as Americans. Let us pray
that we will continue to enjoy them as we remember who we are, where we came from, and those that have
gone before us.

Queridos amigos,
Continuando donde me quedé la semana pasada en mi viaje, estábamos en Lisieux con Santa Teresa. Me encantó el
ambiente allí, una hermosa ciudad en Normandía. Después de pasar el día allí con Santa Teresa y su familia, de nuevo
abordamos el autobús y viajamos por carretera. Nuestro próximo destino era Mont Saint-Michel.
En el camino, nos desviamos un poquito fuera de la autopista principal, para visitar el Cementerio Americano de
Normandía. Esta fue una experiencia poderosa. Regularmente asisto a sepelios en el Cementerio Nacional de Tahoma,

estaba todavía húmeda por el rocío. Yendo del Centro de Visitantes al cementerio no tenía idea de lo que el Señor tenía

cerca de 10,000 soldados estadounidenses que dieron sus vidas defendiendo nuestra libertad. Las lápidas están alineadas
con precisión militar hasta donde uno alcanza a ver. La mayoría son cruces y hay unas cuantas Estrellas Judías de David
también. Aunque estaba en Francia, yo estaba pisando suelo americano y esto causó una profunda impresión en mí en
ese momento. Nos encaminamos hacia la capilla, la mayoría de nosotros en silencio, asombrados ante el entorno. Una
vez que todos nos habíamos reunido en la capilla empezamos a cantar nuestro himno nacional, dirigidos por Amy,
nuestro cantor. Casi nadie tenía un ojo seco ya que resonaba tan maravillosamente en la capilla y en nuestros corazones.
Luego cantamos America the Beautiful y terminamos en oración por todos aquellos que dieron sus vidas en ese lugar

Al caminar por el cementerio, nuestra guía y chofer polaco me mostró algo muy Americano. Él señaló el borde del pasto
recortado perfectamente a un cuarto de pulgada de la banqueta. Él dijo: "Esto es Estados Unidos."
Nunca me había sentido más patriótico en mi vida que ese día. Realmente estoy orgulloso de ser americano. Tal vez esta
reflexión habría sido más apropiada cerca del Día de los Veteranos, que pronto celebraremos, pero cayó en esta semana
en la secuencia de mis reflexiones. Estoy muy agradecido por las bendiciones que disfrutamos como estadounidenses.
Oremos para que podamos seguir disfrutándolas, recordando quiénes somos, de dónde venimos, y los que nos han
precedido.

The Gabriel Project is a
parish-based ministry of the
Archdiocese of Seattle. Here at St.
Andrew we have a Gabriel Project
coordinator/Angel, two angels-intraining, two "Michaels", and a team
to help pray, assist, and encourage. Our mission
is to help women of all ages who are struggling
with a crisis pregnancy. There is no definition to
the word "crisis". If a woman finds herself
pregnant and feels distressed, scared, unsure
about continuing the pregnancy, or convinced
that abortion is the only solution we are here to
help in any way we can. We seek to establish a
relationship that responds to the emotional,
physical, and spiritual needs of moms who come
to us for help, and journey with them until the
