Most of us have heard many times the story of how God tested
Abraham, as reported in our first reading from Genesis. Often there
may be various emotional reactions to the situation as it unfolds.
However, there are two important aspects of the narrative that we
sometimes miss.
Yes, Abraham was tested, but so was his son Isaac. It would seem
that Isaac was a willing participant in the ordeal. Isaac clearly did
not protest nor resist lying on the altar in preparation for what
would occur. Isaac offers an example of one of the basic tenets of
stewardship: he trusted completely in God (and in his father, as
well). That kind of total trust is difficult, but if we do not trust in the
Lord, it is hard for us to make the kind of commitment to stewardship and discipleship the Lord wants from us.
The other feature of this story we sometimes miss is the parallel
between Abraham and his son, and what would occur between God
and His only son, Jesus Christ. Everything from the mountain to
hauling the wood up the mountain to the father sacrificing his son
to deliverance from death is reminiscent of Christ’s sacrifice for us,
and God’s willingness to offer “His only begotten Son, that those
who believe in him may not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John
3:16)

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima,/
Queridos parroquianos y amigos de Nuestra Señora de Fátima,
Abraham is called the Father of our Faith
because he believed trusted so greatly in
God. But this did not just happen. By the
time Abraham was asked to sacrifice his
only son, Isaac, he had been experiencing the greatness of the Lord in his life
for many years. God had been guiding
him and Abraham had allowed God into
his life. This relationship was inseparable
and solid, so when God told Abraham
his will, he was able to accept it and was
ready to sacrifice Isaac. Most likely this
is not where your relationship with God
is at this moment. We listen to this story
every Lent to encourage us to have even
a taste of this type of belief and trust.
MASS INTENTIONS/INTENCIONES
God will mostly likely never directly ask of you this type of sacrifice,
but when our faith is strong and our belief in God and heaven is solid
then maybe when we need to remove a loved one from a ventilator or
stop feeding a dying parent on hospice it might be a bit easier because
we know our loving Father is there at that moment to comfort us and
guide us.

God bless you all!
Fr. Jim

Each week, we will publish a few questions intended to help you explore a particular theme in the Sunday’s readings. Use
them for your personal reflection throughout the week or as a topic of conversation at your dinner table, ministry meeting
or your next social gathering. Carrying the Sunday readings into our week is a way to help us grow in our faith as individuals and as a parish.
A Glimpse Of The Kingdom
Un vistazo del reino
One week into the desert of Lent and we hear stories of
sacrifice and transformation. All of us will face times when
doing God’s will conflict with our own desires. The sacrifice that is asked of us is just too painful. Yet, it is in that
moment of letting go that we are changed and a new life
emerges. This is how we participate in the paschal mystery
– the dying and rising of Christ. It is there that we may see a
glimpse of God’s kingdom.
Dios y nuestros propios deseos.

An invitation for the women of Our Lady of
Fatima Church
This weekend, you will have a chance to meet representatives from
YLI in Fullerton. YLI stands for Young Ladies Institute but don’t
think that excludes you! As you will hopefully see, the group is
“young at heart” and eager to share their love for this Catholic
woman’s organization. This sisterhood of women has been helping and mentoring others since 1887. The Corpus Christi Institute
from Fullerton has members from 17 to almost 102 years of age. The
Institute began in 1948 and is one of 5 others in our District and one
of 90+ Institutes in the four Western states of California, Oregon,
Washington and Hawaii. Corpus Christi is interested in forming a
new Institute in south Orange county. YLI members are Lectors,
RCIA and Confirmation Instructors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion, Bereavement Committee members and much more.
Look for their information table after all Masses this weekend.
