Join a ReLent Group What is a ReLent group? ReLent groups are small groups of people (usually 12 or less) that gather once a week during Lent to break open the Word and pray together. Not a Bible study, it is an opportunity to take a look at the Lenten scriptures and share what they might mean for you, personally. Where do they meet? Usually in a person’s home; sometimes in a coffee shop; or in the Church. When do they meet? They meet at different times during the day and evening on different days of the week. What if I don’t know anyone? No problem! This is a great way to meet people. What if I can’t commit every week? That’s not a problem either. Often people have commitments that conflict on a day or two; everyone understands. Come when you can. Why should I do this? Ah, so many reasons! Because it will make your personal Lent experience deeper, because someone will benefit from what you bring to the group, because it builds community, . . . and because once you do it, you’ll wonder why you hesitated. I’m thinking about hosting a group myself. What should I do? Fantastic! Just e-mail [email protected] or call Sr. Christina at 847.864-1185 ext. 23 and she will help you. Please note that every Tuesday evening, a group meets in church and opens the Word as part of evening prayer. ¿Y si no conozco a nadie? Centeno Children's’ Liturgy of the Word 9:00am TBA Spiritual Life / Vida Espiritual The St. Nicholas Transformation Process Looking Back and Looking Forward During the fall of 2013 St. Nicholas began a “parish transformation” process: a period of examining and discussing and ultimately finding ways to reinvigorate parish life. From the initial meetings emerged six implementation teams, each focused on a vital aspect of the parish: Adult Formation, Youth Formation, Mission and Engagement, Financial Resources, Pope John XXIII School, and Liturgy and Prayer. What follows is an update on one team’s efforts during the past year. Implementation Co-Chairs Tom Lenz - 847-475-5258 or [email protected] Sheila Hebein - 847-864-8064 or [email protected] Update: Financial Resources Team coordinator: Jean Bryan What did this team set out to accomplish? The transformation discussions coalesced around the need for increased monthly/weekly giving, improved communication, and a long-term development plan, all in service of supporting St. Nick’s mission and ministries. Our team decided to focus specifically on five critical areas: (1) covering the operating budget with weekly/monthly giving, (2) reducing our reliance on fundraisers, (3) increasing financial literacy, (4) connecting stewardship to St. Nick’s mission, and (5) establishing a sustainable financial basis for the parish. What were some highlights of the past year? We set out to establish a model for future years. Team members collaborated with parish staff and the Finance Council to give the annual report a new look with an increased emphasis on understandable data, personal stories, and the connection between finances and mission. Throughout October, the team implemented a month-long plan that featured a kick-off homily, lay reflections, and bulletin announcements and offered several opportunities to sign up for GiveCentral. Who has has been involved? Marion Flynn, Susan Schaffrath, Karen Allen, Joanne Bertsche, and I collaborated on the annual report and the planning and implementation of stewardship month. Karen specifically focused on the GiveCentral effort (up 10% and still growing), and Joanne initiated the process of establishing a Planned Giving/Bequests Society. Many other team members contributed ideas, responded to written documents, helped make the team-sponsored Coffee Cake Sunday a success, spoke from the pulpit, and participated in numerous ways. These contributors included Ampy Basa, Jim Burke, Mary Burke-Peterson, Mary Erickson, Marge Gambow, Terence Houk, and Jaime Rojas. Is there anything special you’d like us to keep in mind? We hope that our work leads to a renewed spirit of generosity among all parishioners and a recognition that financial resources are needed so that every ministry, group and individual can flourish and realize their full potential. How do you envision this transformation work going forward? Our team has recommended more than a dozen concrete activities that build on the work of the past year. One key recommendation is the formation of a stewardship committee made up of 10-12 parishioners who would lead and support communication, education, and stewardship initiatives. Many volunteers with many talents will be needed: all are welcome. The panelists were Dr. Sue Garthwaite (spiritual director and author), Dr. Bob Shuford (hospital chaplain), Dr. Bren Murphy (faculty at Loyola) and Sr. Christina Fuller (Director of Religious Education). Approximately 40 were in attendance. A key insight from the panel’s sharing was that “God reconciles all things with a whisper to arise.” As Christians, we are called to believe that God can, and will, participate actively in our positive efforts toward reconciling differences and hurts, whether between individuals, among family members or in the context of larger societal issues. The panelists told powerful stories about their own efforts toward reconciling difficulties in personal relationships while trusting in God – the prime mover – for inspiration and courage. If we are open to welcoming grace into our lives, then we will know which action to take when faced with the question of whether to choose the death of a close friendship or reconciliation that heals. Audio of several of the reflections is available on the parish blog. To listen, go to https://nickchurchblog.wordpress..com.
