Downey Overture is a Latin-American fusion with which the composer has wanted to link his birth country, Spain, and California, the land that has greatly impacted him personally and musically, and which has left a mark in his heart after the two years he lived there. An amalgam of rhythm and musical color wrapped in an atmosphere of dance give essence to this piece. It is joyful, energetic and written with all my enthusiasm and dedication. It could not have been any other way for the Downey Symphony Orchestra. Mockbeggar Variations was a commission in 1991 by Robert Roscoe for the Berkshire Youth Wind Orchestra (UK). The Prelude hints at the melodic and harmonic material of the Theme, which appears in the thirty-first bar of the piece, distributed between various solo instruments and small groups of players. The succeeding Five Variations are contrasted in mood, tempo, style and instrumentation.” Cao Xueqin was a Chinese novelist, poet, writer, philosopher and painter during the Qing Dynasty. An unconventional, versatile man, he came from an eminent and wealthy family which suffered a reversal of fortune after the death of the Kangxi Emperor. He was the author of Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢), one of the Four Great Classical Novels of the Chinese literature which is a vivid recreation of an illustrious Cao’s family at its most glorious stage and its subsequent downfall. The Legend – Cao Xueqin, composed in eleven movements, describes different aspect of Cao’s life. The second movement, Wen (文), 3 literally means “scholastic elegancy”, while Zui (醉), the 3rd movement means “drunk” (Cao was a inveterate drinker). Chinese music is generally recognized as kind of pentatonic music while actually it is not quite the situation. Modal writing seems to be also largely employed and acts as the best answer collateral to so-called pentatonic style. The Legend – Cao Xueqin has merged both the western harmonies and typical Chinese Pipa style of “chords”. Dr. Matthew George has commissioned several works to Dr. Hultgren who decided compose a work to celebrate his fiftieth anniversary in appreciation for his trust. On the very first visit Dr. George made to Dr. Hultgren’s home in Brisbane he encountered one of his tenants - a small Huntsman spider. This meeting provided a unique glimpse into Dr. George’s world and, all these years later, has given impetus to the creation of the work to commemorate his birth - Arachnophobia! Piece of Mind is composer Dana Wilson’s representation of the workings of the human mind. This work has four movements: Thinking, Remembering, Feeling and Being. The fourth movement, Being, addresses a mental state that is rarely considered in American culture. Non-Western – particularly East Indian – musical styles are called upon to shape the four-note idea so as to conjure up and celebrate this marvelous attribute (this piece, this peace. . .) of mind. The title of the work is inspired in the power and serene beauty of the Superior Lake. While there are certainly melodic and harmonic motifs used throughout the work, the larger unifying themes present are a bit more abstract. One main theme is the idea of colors blurring into each other. This was inspired by the place on the horizon where the water appears to blend right into the sky. Moments of tension and release can be attributed to a number of things such as waves crashing to the shore or the imagery of what might lie beneath the water’s surface. Above all, the most prevalent theme of the piece is its pensive, introspective feeling, which is exactly the same feeling that comes over the composer upon each visit to Lake Superior. Programmatic work based on a Brazilian legend, immortalized by the books by Monteiro Lobato, in which a demonic creature (a black child of one leg, red cap and always smoking a pipe) scares and haunts the lives of mestizos living in region. Also the legend tells that the Saci is within swirls. The first part, fast and furious, tries to portray abruptly the Saci moving through a swirl, fleeing a hunter, trying to capture through a sieve. The central section provides a moment of rest for the Saci in which a long bassoon solo creates an eerie atmosphere marked by bursts of sudden and unexpected gestures. Finally, the first idea returns and the escape is restarted. Huldigungsmarch, an original composition for band As is well-known, after a long period of frustration professionally, financially and personally, Wagner was ‘rescued’ by the appearance of Herr Pfistermeister, the secretary to the newly crowned king of Bavaria, Ludwig II, who announced the intent of the new king to guarantee the financial support of Wagner and his music. Wagner first met the king on 4 May 1864 and in gratitude began the composition of the Huldigungsmarch in honor of the king. The first performance, by three combined infantry bands stationed near Munich, was given on the king’s nineteenth birthday, 25 August 1864. In 1920, Joaquín Turina composed his Symphony Sevillana, a beautiful and exciting piece in three movements (Panorama, Por el río Guadalquivir y Fiesta en San Juan de Aznalfarache). The work is a poem; something like the beating of the Andalusian city. The third movement describes an Andalusian festival that takes place in San Juan de Aznalfarache, in an inn at the riverbank, alternating rhythms of the zapateado and garrotin. The idyll is exalted, the chotis takes great propositions, it’s amplified and ends with a hymn of love.
