First Sunday of Lent

First Sunday of Lent
The Meaning of our Baptism
Lent is the time of year that we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Today's readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a
covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that
if we truly keep the covenant, the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but a source of love and truth. Peter's letter
gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear
conscience? The words that Jesus proclaims immediately following his temptation show us the way: "Repent and believe in the gospel." It
might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life
lived in our baptismal promises.
Together in Mission
"Be Imitators of Me" 1 Corinthians 11
“Without the generous support of the Together in Mission donors the future of
Nativity School and other schools like ours would be unknown,”
Antonio Felix - Principal, Nativity School
“For 8 years now, we have had the Blessed Sacrament exposed during the week,
and every Friday for the entire night. The funds from Together in Mission has
helped us with repairs, the chapel that give our community a place to pray and
allows us to help the needy.”
Fr. Guillermo Martínez - Pastor, Our Lady Of Solitude
“Dolores Church is the only church with a homeless shelter open 365 days of
the year. Many people in Los Angeles are one paycheck away from becoming
homeless. You think it can’t happen to you, then it does…we wouldn’t be here if
it wasn’t for Together in Mission.”
Ellie Hidalgo - Pastoral Associate, Dolores Mission Church
We want to thank all of you who have given generously to Together in Mission
in past years. These funds have literally helped not only to provide ministry,
but also to keep the doors open in 80 parishes and 63 schools throughout the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles supported by the campaign. Your gift enables us
to provide essential resources and ministries that enrich parish life, strengthen
families, advance Church leadership and inspire and educate future generations
of our faith.
If you have not made a pledge/commitment for this year's campaign, we ask you
to please consider doing so. Envelopes are available in the Parish Center and
in the entrances of the church. If you already received a pledge form from the
Archdiocese please feel free to drop it in the collection or mail it to the Parish
Center at any time.

Antonio Felix - Director, Nativity School

Child abduction: taking action
A recent study of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® revealed that 83% of children who escaped their wouldbe abductors kicked, yelled, and pulled away to escape. Teach your child these and other abduction prevention skills, such as: Asking
for permission before changing plans; asking for permission before approaching or getting into vehicles with anyone; recognizing the
tricks would-be abductors use, such as offering rides or asking for help; telling a trusted adult whenever anything or anyone makes them
uncomfortable. When it comes to keeping your child safe, YOU are your child’s best resource. The more you know about abduction
prevention, the better protected your child will be. Use your knowledge to make conversations about personal safety a regular part of your
family’s routine. For more information, visit:
