Dear Families:
Queridas Familias:
We saw last Sunday that Jesus is the prophet of God
who tells us what the Father has entrusted Him to communicate to
us. We also know that our union to Him through Baptism makes
us participants in His prophetic role: to communicate to others
what He has revealed to us.
Veíamos el domingo pasado que Jesús es el profeta de
Dios que nos dice lo que el Padre le ha encargado comunicarnos.
Y veíamos también que nuestra incorporación a El por el Bautismo
nos hace partícipes de su función profética: comunicar a los demás
lo que El nos ha revelado.
Today, in the second reading, St. Paul underlines our
obligation to comply with this office that he, as an apostle, had in a
very special way: “Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel! (1 Cor
9:16).
Hoy, San Pablo, en la segunda lectura subraya la
obligación de cumplir con este oficio que a él, como apóstol,
correspondía de manera especial: “¡Ay de mí, si no anuncio el
Evangelio!” (1 Cor 9:16).
In today’s Gospel, St. Mark teaches us a triple way of
doing this through Jesus’ examples: with works of charity, prayer
and preaching.
After healing of the demoniac, on a Sabbath, in the
synagogue of Capernaum, Jesus entered the house of Simon and
Andrew. He was warned that Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a
fever and Jesus then cured her immediately.
“When it was evening, after sunset, they brought him all who were
ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the
door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he
drove out many demons” (Mk 1:32-34).
It is evident that our prophetic mission, like that of Jesus’,
has to be accompanied by works of charity, because the Gospel
that we preach is the greatest work of God’s charity for us and
what we have to communicate is expressed in the commandment
of love, “not in word or speech, but in deed and truth” (1Jn 3:18).
It is true: we have to practice charity as proof of the
validity of the Gospel that we profess, but we must give priority in
our apostolic work to prayer. What we have in hand is God’s
business (undertaking), “…therefore, neither the one who plants
nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who causes the
growth…”
Y el pasaje de San Marcos de la tercera lectura de hoy
nos enseña, con el ejemplo de Jesús, la triple forma de hacerlo: con
obras de caridad, con la oración y con la predicación.
Después de la curación del endemoniado, un sábado en
la sinagoga de Cafarnaún, Jesús se retiró a la casa de Simón y de
Andrés. Al llegar le advirtieron que la suegra de Simón estaba en
cama con fiebre y Jesús la curó inmediatamente. “Al anochecer,
cuando se puso el sol, le llevaron todos los enfermos y poseídos.
La población entera se agolpaba a la puerta. Curó a muchos
enfermos de diversos males y expulsó muchos demonios” (Mc 1:3234).
Es evidente que nuestra misión profética, como la de
Jesús, ha de ir acompañada de obras de caridad; porque el
evangelio que predicamos es la gran obra de caridad de Dios para
con nosotros y lo que tenemos que comunicar se concreta en el
mandamiento del amor “no de palabra ni de boca, sino con obras y
de verdad” (1 Jn 3:18).
Es verdad: tenemos que practicar obras de caridad como
prueba de la validez del evangelio que profesamos; pero tenemos
que dar primacía en nuestro trabajo apostólico a la oración. Lo que
tenemos entre manos es empresa de Dios en la que “ni el que
planta es algo, ni el que riega, sino Dios hace crecer…” (1 Cor 3:7).

As we already have charity and prayer, now, lastly, we
need to say something about our obligation to preach. St. Paul
tells us: “but how can they call on him in whom they have not
believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have
not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach?
Thus faith comes from what is heard” (Romans 10:14-17).
Así que tenemos ya: obras de caridad, oración y nos falta
decir algo acerca de nuestra obligación de predicar. Nos dice San
Pablo: “Pero, ¿cómo invocarán a aquel en quien no han creído? Y
¿cómo creerán en él de quien no han oído? Y ¿cómo oirán, si no se

The readings today show how Jesus reached out to the poor, the
weak, the sick. These individuals, and those who cared for them, knew
they could come to Jesus.
The Church, which teaches that all life belongs to God, reaches out

financial aid, legal advice, counseling, job and education opportunities,
help to keep and raise the child or to make an adoption plan, and

Gphomestay is a residential program
for international students to come to the
U.S. and attend Cardinal Mooney High
School. We are looking for host families
to provide housing for these students for
the 2015-16 school year. It is a wonderful
opportunity to learn about another culture
while providing an authentic American
experience for a student. A monthly stipend is also paid to cover costs. If
