Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Healing the Unclean
Mosaic law separated lepers as outcasts from
the rest of the people and
required them to cry out,
“Unclean, unclean,” when
others approached. The
leper who approached Jesus
directly was breaking
Mosaic Law. He must have
deeply believed and desperately hoped that Jesus had
the ability to heal him, for he said, “If you will, you
can make me clean.” Not only did the leper know his
need, he also had to believe that Jesus was the answer
to that need. The leper would not have broken Mosaic
law and approached Jesus if he had not had confidence
in his compassion.
The leper represents all people of God, defiled
and stained by sin. God is righteous and holy and no
unclean person can dwell in his presence. All are
separated from God due to sin. Even so, God did not
want his children to remain separated from him and
made every provision for us to return to him through
his Son, whose death and resurrection conquered sin.
We tend to think of God as far off and aloof,
yet the incident of the leper testifies to God’s
compassion in his Son. While seeing our sin
completely, he still loves us, heals us, and forgives us.
His compassion comes from a oneness with humanity
because his only Son became a human person and was
tempted like us in every way, yet remained sinless.
Jesus had no fear of the leper or of the law that
required his isolation. By touching the leper, he made
himself unclean in the eyes of the law. As the Son of
God, however, he was free from the demands of the
law. On the cross, Jesus so identified himself with
sinful humanity that he touched and became our sin.
When he rose from the dead, he demonstrated his
power over sin.
No matter how terrible our sin or how distant
we feel from God, Jesus loves us, forgives us, and
wants to heal us completely. Let us seek him out with
confidence as did the leper because we believe he
loves us and has compassion for us. Let us approach
him with true sorrow for our sins, yet without fear. If
we approach him, he will stretch out his hand and
touch us.

Called to be Merciful
Diocese of San Diego
2015 Annual
Catholic Appeal
“Called to be Merciful,” is an invitation to
compassion, hope, and love. As disciples we
are called to trust in Jesus’ mercy, to trust in
his patience, to seek refuge always in his
love. Jesus invites us to recognize him in the
poor, in those that suffer, and in those in
need. We encounter God’s love when we
express mercy and compassion, through
stewardship, service, and sacrifice. Our
mission is to share Jesus with the whole
world. We are called to know Christ and
sent to make him known.
The Annual Catholic Appeal supports
service to the poor and imprisoned,
education for children in Catholic schools
and training of catechists, formation of
candidates for the priesthood, ministry to our youth and to
young people on university campuses, preparation of
couples for marriage, and support for parish development in
Imperial Valley.
Please take some time this week in prayer, asking God for
guidance in your response to this year’s Annual Catholic
Appeal.
Called to be Merciful Prayer
Loving God, we thank you for calling
us together. In you we are one.
Help us to remember that united,
we are called to be merciful
and love one another through the
generous sharing of our time,
gifts, and resources.
Please bless our efforts and
help us to grow as a unified
and vibrant community of faith.
Give us the grace to generously
support the Annual Catholic Appeal
so that we may faithfully do
the work of Your Church.
Amen
Please return your pledge cards to the Parish Office.

Guidelines for Fast &Abstinence
During Lent
Abstinence is a penitential practice consisting
of refraining from the consumption of meat
and is to be observed by all Catholics who are
14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and
the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.
In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed by all
Catholics between the ages of 18-59 (inclusive). On days of
fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient
to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs,
but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating
between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: If
a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill
health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice
other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.
Rite of Election
On Sunday, February 22nd, the catechumens from
our RCIA program attend the Diocese’s Rite of
Election. This public step closes the period of
catechumenate, which itself is a lengthy period of
formation of the catechumens’ minds and hearts, and opens the
period of purification and enlightenment. Therefore the celebration of election traditionally coincides with the opening of Lent.
The focus here is on following Christ with greater generosity.
This weekend we will also encounter those in our RCIA program
who have been baptized, but have not yet receive the rest of the
sacraments of initiation (Confirmation and/or Holy Communion).
These are not the catechumens, but the candidates. Their part of
the celebration at the Rite of Election is labeled: The Call to
Continuing Conversion. Please keep them in your prayers.
The Diocesan Institute is a great resource for
adult Catholic educational opportunities. Their
early spring schedule of classes has just come
out. Take a look by visiting the Diocese of San
Diego’s website: www.diocese-sdiego.org.
From the home page, select: Diocese, Pastoral
Offices, Diocesan Institute.
During Lent we are called to practice
three traditional facets of Christian penance: charity, prayer and fasting. Each
of these three practices takes us outside
and beyond ourselves: toward others
through charity, toward God through
prayer, toward ourselves through fasting. Take some
time today to think about how you will incorporate these
practices into your life during the season of Lent.
February 15, 2015
Pope's Message for Lent 2015:
“Make your hearts firm.”
“As individuals we are tempted by
indifference. Flooded with news
reports and troubling images of
human suffering, we often feel our
complete inability to help. What can
we do to avoid being caught up in
this spiral of distress and powerlessness? First, we can pray in
communion with the Church on
earth and in heaven. Let us not underestimate the power of
so many voices united in prayer! The '24 Hours for the
Lord' initiative, which I hope will be observed on March 13th
& 14th throughout the Church, also at the diocesan level, is
meant to be a sign of this need for prayer. Second, we can
help by acts of charity, reaching out to both those near and
far through the Church’s many charitable organizations.
Lent is a favorable time for showing this concern for others
by small yet concrete signs of our belonging to the one
human family. Third, the suffering of others is a call to conversion, since their need reminds me of the uncertainty of
my own life and my dependence on God and my brothers
and sisters. If we humbly implore God’s grace and accept
our own limitations, we will trust in the infinite possibilities
which God’s love holds out to us. We will also be able to
resist the diabolical temptation of thinking that by our own
efforts we can save the world and ourselves. As a way of
overcoming indifference and our pretensions to selfsufficiency, I would invite everyone to live this Lent as an
opportunity for engaging in what Benedict XVI called a formation of the heart. A merciful heart does not mean a weak
heart. Anyone who wishes to be merciful must have a
strong and steadfast heart, closed to the tempter but open
to God. A heart which lets itself be pierced by the Spirit so
as to bring love along the roads that lead to our brothers
and sisters. And, ultimately, a poor heart, one which realizes its own poverty and gives itself freely for others. During
this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask the Lord:
'Fac cor nostrum secundum cor tuum': Make our hearts like
yours (Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). In this way we
will receive a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and
generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to
the globalization of indifference. It is my prayerful hope that
this Lent will prove spiritually fruitful for each believer and
every ecclesial community. I ask all of you to pray for me.
May the Lord bless you and Our Lady keep you.”
Thank you, God, for all the moments of our
lives, moments in which to do your will, to show
your glory. Help us to know your presence in all
the present moments that we live. Whatever we
do, we do for you. Amen

Lent at St. Didacus Catholic Church
This year our Sunday Gospel readings have been focusing on the Gospel of
Mark. Over and over again the theme of discipleship is highlighted. Do you see
yourself as a disciple of Christ? The truth is that Jesus calls each of us
individually and as a community to be disciples.
This Lent we are doing something new. We will gather on Friday evenings after
our usual soup suppers to explore the theme of discipleship. Both the English
and Spanish speaking communities will come together for a shared meal. After eating, one group will stay in the hall and the
other will gather in the Church for a talk, some reflection and sharing about discipleship. Each week we will highlight different
Scripture readings and different perspectives on what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. We will still offer Stations of the Cross
several times during Lent. You can find the times listed on the schedule below.
Our focus on discipleship this Lent will help you grow in your faith and in your relationship with Christ. The Lord never forces us
to follow him, but he constantly calls and invites us to be his disciples. “Come and see.”
