The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 8
“Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go on to
the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.’” – Mark 1:35, 38
In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes - healing
the sick and preaching. Yet, Jesus also makes time to be alone
in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time with God, that we
find the strength to do what God wishes us to do. Be sure to
find time every day to be with God.

Immaculate Conception Church
Pro-Life Corner
As New Jersey debates physician assisted
suicide and the "right to die," we see our
culture further embracing the culture of
death and the principle that some lives
are not worth living. Whatever the condition of our life we remain made in the
image and likeness of God, and thus of
profound value. The secular world increasingly sees only a life that it judges as
"productive" under its standards as being
worthy of continued life. This should
worry us all. History shows that "the
right to die" quickly becomes "the duty
to die," a duty that is strictly enforced by
the state. Let us not forget that at the
beginning of the killing of the innocent
under Hitler it was accompanied with an
effort to convince the public that there
were certain people who if thinking correctly would realize
that they were better off dead. The Nazi program to eliminate “life unworthy of life” began on Hitler’s order in October 1939. The program at first focused on handicapped
newborns and very young children. The Nazi euthanasia
program soon expanded to include older disabled children
and adults. Hitler granted “the authority of certain physicians to be designated by name in such manner, that persons who, according to human judgment, are incurable,
can, upon a most careful diagnosis of their condition of
sickness, be accorded a mercy death.” We need today to
again consider the homily of Cardinal Clemens von Galen
delivered on August 3, 1941 condemning the Nazi euthanasia program: "...we are dealing with human beings, our
fellow human beings, our brothers and sisters. With poor
people, sick people, if you like unproductive people. But
have they for that reason forfeited the right to life? Have
you, have I the right to live only so long as we are productive, so long as we are recognized by others as productive?
If you establish and apply the principle that you can kill
‘unproductive’ fellow human beings then woe betide us all
when we become old and frail! ...If one is allowed forcibly
to remove one’s unproductive fellow human beings then
woe betide loyal soldiers who return to the homeland seriously disabled, as cripples, as invalids. If it is once accepted
that people have the right to kill ‘unproductive’ fellow humans–and even if initially it only affects the poor defenseless mentally ill–then as a matter of principle murder is permitted for all unproductive people, in other words for the
incurably sick, the people who have become invalids
through labor and war, for us all when we become old, frail
and therefore unproductive. ...Who will be able to trust his
doctor any more? He may report his patient as
‘unproductive’ and receive instructions to kill him. It is impossible to imagine the degree of moral depravity, of general mistrust that would then spread even through families
if this dreadful doctrine is tolerated, accepted and followed.
Woe to mankind, woe to our German nation if God’s Holy
Commandment ‘Thou shalt not kill,’ which God proclaimed on Mount Sinai amidst thunder and lightning,
which God our Creator inscribed in the conscience of mankind from the very beginning, is not only broken, but if this
transgression is actually tolerated and permitted to go unpunished." We know how far the killing expanded in Germany. Do not be fooled into thinking that physician assisted
suicide will remain voluntary and limited. What the seriously ill need is compassionate care to continue to live their
life with dignity. All life is sacred. All life remains made in
the image and likeness of God no matter its condition. All
life is under God's authority.

Catholic School Tuition Assistance
Once again, tuition assistance will be available
from the Diocese for families seeking financial aid for
the 2015-2016 school year. To receive a tuition grant,
an application must be filed through Private School Aid
Service (PSAS). Blank applications will be forwarded
directly from PSAS to each school in time for distribution to parents during Catholic Schools Week beginning January 26th. In addition to the hardcopy forms
available in both English & Spanish, a PDF version of
both forms, which can be downloaded and printed, will
be available on the diocesan website at
www.Tinyurl.com/DOM-TuitionAssistance. Please
take note: that only registered Catholic families with
children (K-12) in one of our diocesan or parochial
schools are eligible. Pre-K students are not. Parents/
Guardians MUST obtain approval and signature on the
forms from their pastor before submission to PSAS for
processing. Applications received at PSAS without a
Pastor’s signature are considered incomplete and
placed in a “hold” status which will jeopardize the applicants’ consideration for aid. The signature is by
one’s proper pastor not the pastor of the school. Applications received after the deadline will be returned
to the family unprocessed and will not be considered
for a grant award; and The DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION TO PSAS IS MARCH 31, 2015.

good computer skills and ability
to organize and maintain records.
Only about 2-3 hours per week
needed. Volunteer will work in
the parish center. Some phone calling required. For
more information call Msgr. Brennan at 908-725-1112.

Social Ministry
Elizabeth Ministry is a group of
Food Collection: On the third
women from our parish who reach out to
women during times of pregnancy, birth, or
adoption. If you or someone you know could
benefit from this ministry, or if you would like
to join the ministry, please contact Jeanine
Cavanagh, at 725-1112 x1126.
Sunday of each month nonperishable foods are collected at the
entrances of the church. The food
is distributed to three agencies; the
Somerset Community Food Bank,
FISH emergency food and clothing pantry and the Somerville
Welfare Office. Over the last few months our Parish Food Collection has decreased dramatically. We rely on the generous
hearts of this Parish Community to help us to continue to fill
our neighboring food pantries. It truly is a simple way to help
those in need. Please take the time to fill one grocery bag with
non-perishable items for those who do not have the means to
purchase one of life’s basic needs ~ food. This ministry is crucial to living the Gospel message that calls us to serve the hungry and in some cases the homeless. Jesus spoke the word
clearly when he stated “When I was hungry did you feed me?
For what you do for the least of these you did for me.” The
next food collection is scheduled for next weekend February14th & 15th.
Mothers’ Retreat Prayer Vigil
On the weekend of February28-March1, 2015, Immaculate
Conception will hold its 14th Mothers’ Retreat.
This is a very special time for mothers at all of
life’s stages to step back from their routine and
seek refreshment, inspiration and direction from
God. We are seeking people who would be willing to support these women in prayer during the
daytime hours of the retreat. If you are interested
in participating in this prayer vigil, please contact
Jeanine Cavanagh at (908) 725-1112 ext. 1126. or Susan Spencer-Craig at 908-218-0025 email at: [email protected].
Hospital Visitations: Those who
serve in the Hospital Visitation Ministry
visit Immaculate Conception parishioners
who are patients at the Somerset Medical
Center. A rotation of volunteers is organized to ensure that
someone from the ministry is at the hospital each weekday.
The Hospital Ministers visit briefly with the patients and, as
representatives of our entire congregation, let them know that
they are in our thoughts and prayers. They also invite the patients to join them in a prayer for their recovery, or any other
intentions. The names of the patients are subsequently placed
on the Prayer Intention List for the sick which is located in the
Church vestibule. Two hours of your time per week can make
a significant difference to someone who may be feeling
alone, afraid, or suffering from emotional and/or physical pain.
This ministry offers a chance to share the gift of God’s love and
help patients realize that they are part of a community that values them and cares for them. If you are interested please contact Jeanine Cavanagh, at 725-1112 x1126.
SHIP's Mobile Soup Kitchen
travels throughout the county to provide the
homeless and working poor with fresh hot
meals. On the first and third Mondays of the
month, ICC parish volunteers staff the Mobile Soup Kitchen
with food servers. We meet at 5pm at St Joseph's church in
North Plainfield and distribute meals there for about 1 hour. We
are always in need of new volunteers. No experience necessary.
This is a great opportunity for students who need Confirmation
hours. If you would like to get involved, please contact Debbie
Berger 908- 526 -7711 or Jeanine Cavanagh at 908-725-1112
for more information.

Parish Nursing Ministry: The Parish
Nurses meet the second Thursday of each month. Our
next meeting will be February 12, 2015, at 7:30 in
the Parish Center. If you are a nurse and would like
to use your calling to serve our parish community, please consider becoming a Parish Nurse. Your involvement in this
endeavor can be very flexible regarding the areas and the time
involved. If “all” you do is to be added to our list of Parish
Nurses as a resource to the ministry, your “all” would be making an immeasurable contribution.
Currently the 2015 Mothers’ Retreat is full however a waitlist is
available. For more informaƟon
please call Debbie ScoƩ 908-2174715 or email: [email protected]

St Thomas More Column A defense of Marriage and Family.
Pope Francis clearly objects to Gender ideology and its forced colonization. In an Air interview on
his way home from the Philippines Pope Francis answered a fourth question which dealt with "ideological
Colonization and Birth Control" he answered by criticizing the Western Secular imposition of a homosexual
agenda on other countries through promising foreign aid if the promotion of gender ideology and so called
gay marriage is allowed. He called this “ideological colonization” and referred to the Nazi propaganda issued during the last century. Asked by a reporter what he meant by the phrase “ideological colonization,” Pope Francis gave an illustration from his own
life. He recalled an incident where a minister of education in a poor area was promised a loan for building schools under the condition that the schools used a book that taught “gender theory.” "She said yes, and also made them give another book, of a different
orientation. And so she succeeded," he explained .He further stated "This is ideological colonization. They enter with an idea that
has nothing to do with the people; but with groups of people yes, but not with the people. It colonizes the people with an idea that
wants to change a mentality or a structure."This ideological colonization “is not new, the dictators of the last century did the same,”
Francis said. "They came with their own doctrine. Think of the BalilLa (The Fascist Youth under Mussolini), think of the Hitler
youth. "Although Pope Francis did not mention so called "gay Marriage' as the ideology, he made clear reference to it. “During the
Synod, the African bishops lamented this: certain loans on certain conditions,” he said. The zealous objection made by the African
Bishops at the Synod were voiced worldwide during the Synod and also made it into the final document which stated it is “totally
unacceptable” that “some pastors of the Church suffer pressure from international bodies who make financial aid to poor countries
conditional upon the acceptance of 'marriage’ between persons of the same sex.” For more info visit http://americamagazine.org/

Mensaje Spiritual
Las lecturas de hoy nos invitan a
la pregunta por el sentido de la
vida, vinculado al hecho del
trabajo y de la fatiga. Job, en un
momento de tentación, ve el
pasar de los días como un
esfuerzo que no conduce a
nada.
Jesucristo predica, cura y ora.
