When is Ash Wednesday?
For Catholics, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, in which we begin to prepare for the
resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday.
Ash Wednesday always falls 46 days before Easter. This year Ash Wednesday is February 18th.
While Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, we are encouraged to attend Mass on
this day in order to begin a process of inner conversion and penance.
The ashes which are distributed during Mass are traditionally made by burning the palms that
were blessed and distributed last year on Palm Sunday.
What is the Origin of Imposing Ashes?
In the early Church, Ash Wednesday was the day on which those who had sinned and wished to
be readmitted to the Church would begin their public penance. The pouring of ashes on one's
body and the wearing of sackcloth as signs of penance are mentioned several times in the Old
Testament, for example, in the book of Job, Samuel and Isaiah.
What Does It Signify?
The ashes that we receive are a reminder of our own sinfulness. We recognize that we, like the
palms that have been burned to make the ashes, will someday return to dust. We are reminded
that human life has limits, that it comes to an end, and that we all must die.
Wearing ashes allows us to practice the virtue of humility, to recognize our human limits and
our need for God.
Catholics (over the age of 18 and under the age of 60) are also called to fast on Ash Wednesday,
which means only eating one full meal and two smaller ones during the day. In addition to the
physical fast, we are called to fast from the habits and actions that come between us and God.
Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent, when we focus on our need to turn away from sin
and back to God with our whole heart, soul and mind.

Administration
 FAITH DIRECT: Please consider helping
Our Lady of Fatima Parish to save some money by
switching to FAITH DIRECT. It makes sure that
your weekly sacrificial support of the parish is here
no matter what the weather is like or if you have to
be away for the weekend. It helps simplify your
giving and also cuts down our use of paper
envelopes. If you want you can give it a try for the
coming six weeks of Lent and see how it works for
you. You can sign up online by going to
www.faithdirect.net. Our parish code is NY303. You
can also sign up by mailing an enrollment form
which is available in the parish office.
 The CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL:
Some ask how the funds raised for the Catholic
Ministries Appeal are used. Gifts are used to live
and share our faith, care for God’s people, and
build God’s Kingdom. These are just a few
examples of how the funds raised are put to good
use:
1. $25 may help pay the gas for a Meals-OnWheels van to deliver food for a day.
2. $50 may help pay for teaching materials for
volunteer catechist.
3. $100 may help care for a newborn in the
Catholic Charities Regina Residence.
4. $250 may help subsidize housing for a
developmentally disabled adult.
5. $1,000 may help support the formation of our
seminarians.
Every gift, no matter the size, helps make a
difference. Only you can decide your gift size.
Prayerfully consider an amount that you can afford
to give each month. Pledging allows you to make a
large-sized gift without stretching your monthly
budget. Whatever your gift, your contribution is very
much appreciated.
Our Parish goal for 2015 is $39,600. Please help us
reach our goal for 2015. Extra donation envelopes
can be found at the main entrance to the church or
you can give on line by going to
www.CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org.

The STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE will
Page 4
meet on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9th, at 7:30 PM in
the SACRISTY. The Stewardship Committee would
also like to thank everyone who supported Our
Lady of Fatima Parish by purchasing Super Bowl
Boxes. This event was a huge success and the
support was outstanding.

The Pastoral Council met on Wednesday,
January 21st. Many thanks to Janina Krach for the
years that she served on our Pastoral Council. Her
many gifts and her willingness to share her time
with the Pastoral council are indeed very much
appreciated. Under Old Business we discussed the
upcoming Parish Leadership Community which will
be held in February. We also took some time to
look at the plans for the Catholic Ministries Appeal
which is currently underway throughout the
diocese. Our goal for 2015 is $39,600. Finally,
under Old Business we reviewed our fund raising
efforts for the restoration of the church, the
expansion of our Parish Social Ministry programs
and our hope to acquire more up to date
technology for our Family Faith programs as well
the purchase of new chairs and desks for the
youngsters who are part of our Family Faith
programs. We would also like to have a fund that
would provide for the on-going formation of our
catechists. In the area of On-Going Business we
reviewed where we are with ARISE (a process
developed by RENEW INTERNATIONAL). We
discussed some possibilities for the development of
our Youth Ministry program and Young Adult
Ministry. Finally under On-Going Business we
discussed some ideas for welcoming new
parishioners. Under New Business we looked at the
Lenten schedule for 2015. The Parish Mission for
Lent will be held on March 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. This
year we are also scheduled to have our semi
annual celebration of the sacrament of marriage on
April 26th. We spoke about the possibility of having
another Pasta Night in 2016. Our annual Brunch
will be held on May 17th, at the Port Washington
Yacht Club. Finally we spoke about how we might
be able to celebrate our successes and get more
feedback after our different celebrations. Our next
meeting is Wednesday, February 11th, at 7:30 PM
in the RECTORY.
 There will be a meeting of the BUILDINGS
& GROUNDS COMMITTEE on THURSDAY,
FEBRUARY 12th, at 7:30 PM in the SACRISTY.
February 8, 2015

Next weekend, February 14th – 15th Fr.
Joseph McLaughlin, SM will speak at all the
Masses asking for your support for the apostolic
work of the Society of the Propagation of the Faith.
Your generosity is very much appreciated.
 The FINANCE COMMITTEE will meet on
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24th, at 7:30 PM in the
SACRISTY.
 The PARISH LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE
will meet on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25th, at
7:30 PM in the PARISH CENTER.
 The COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE will
meet on THURSDAY, MARCH 5th, at 7:00 PM in
the PARISH OFFICE.
Community Life
Dear Friends,
The season of Lent is quickly approaching! Ash
Wednesday will be here one week from this
coming Wednesday. Let us pray throughout
these coming days that the season of Lent will be
blest time for all of us, that through prayer,
fasting, and almsgiving we will all come to a
glorious celebration of Easter on April 5th!
This weekend we continue our readings from the
Sundays in Ordinary Time. The first reading
comes from the Book of Job. It is the book in the
Hebrew Scriptures that deals with the question,
the mystery of suffering in our world. We all
know the story of Job. He is that righteous and
upstanding man, a man of virtue who finds
himself caught up in one calamity after another.
In the midst of it all Job still trusts in the Lord
his God. Job proclaims: “I know that my
Redeemer lives” and again: “My footsteps have
followed close in God’s…I have walked his way
without swerving.” I remember reading many
years ago a few words that have stayed with me
since I read them: “Joy is not the absence of
pain, rather joy is the presence of God!”
Somehow we are called to find the presence of
Page 5
God in all the many different circumstances of
life.
Jesus in the gospel proclaims the healing power
of God both in word and deed. Jesus manifests
the healing power of God in a new way. Jesus
reaches out to Peter’s mother-in-law and healed
her, even helping her up. He spends the evening
healing all who come to him. He then goes off to
pray, but on the next day he continues his
mission of alleviating the suffering of others.
Later in the gospel of Mark, he will give a new
meaning to suffering through his suffering and
death.
Suffering for the sake of others; death endured
by a just one for the purpose of redeeming the
unjust; in this we find a profound and almost
inscrutable mystery. It is a mystery into which
those who follow Jesus must let themselves be
led. Suffering is never an end in itself. Through
our confession of faith, in the midst of suffering
and mystery, we, like Job in the Hebrew
Scriptures, will be able to proclaim that our
Redeemer lives. Through our truthful confession
of faith, through the inevitable suffering that
shapes our lives we find both meaning and
purpose in the redemptive action of Jesus.
Sometimes the immensity of suffering can indeed
overwhelm us! Paul is compelled to preach the
gospel. In the midst of everything he will
continue to proclaim the gospel message. The
Gospel must speak to the here and now as well as
of the world to come. We must be concerned
with the advancement of humanity, justice and
liberation, as well as with the future
participation of all humankind in the reign of
God. In the everyday process of evangelization
you and I will meet many Jobs and many ailing
mother-in-laws. Human suffering and
unspeakable horrors are everywhere, and must
be addressed. We are called to be the disciples
who, like Dorothy Day and Mother Theresa, see
in the poor and suffering the presence of the
Risen Christ and minister to them with the
conviction of our faith and hearts filled with
compassion.
February 8, 2015
As the season of Lent draws so near let us pray
that we might truly find in these coming forty
days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving a way to
conversion, a way to proclaim both to ourselves
and to others that our Redeemer truly lives by
living the Gospel message through a life of loving
and humble service in the midst of suffering and
pain. May each of us throughout the coming
weeks of Lent bring to ourselves and others the
presence of our compassionate and ever present
God.
Peace,
Fr. Steve

Fatima, St. Aloysius, and St. Peter’s Parishes). In a
little more than two years there have been two
Youth Ministers. Veronica Ticas moved on to a
ministry at Sacred Heart High School after St.
Ignatius Retreat House was closed and her ministry
there was ended. She ministered to our three
parishes as part of her ministry at the retreat house.
Meaghan came after Veronica and after a year or
so she moved to another position other than Youth
Ministry which offered her a better salary than our
parish could afford. The other factor is that the
response on the part of our teens was
disappointing. In a time when cost is an important
factor in determining where resources are spent we
are challenged to invest our resources where they
will reap abundant fruit. The question is a complex
one. Please keep these questions in your prayers
throughout the year.

During this last week we
have removed names from
our sick list. We are happy
to tell you some of our
people recovered or are in
remission. Our prayers have helped them
journey through their illnesses. We have been

told they could not have done it without us. We
offered prayers asking God to help, strengthen,
guide, protect, comfort, hold, and love them.
Illness is difficult for anyone and we help ease
their pain as they struggle through some pretty
rough roads.
Our thoughts, cards, and prayers tell them we
care and are concerned not just occasionally but
every day. By our actions their families know
how important their loved ones are to us. They
are not just a name week after week in the Focus,
but are real live people asking for our prayers.
We will be here for you if you need us.
The CaringHands Prayer Chain is in need of more
people to pray as you see; when one name comes
off our list two more go on the list. Follow the
directions below to join the group today. We
need you. Our CaringHands ministry is a parish

the cards are signed by Our Lady of Fatima

1 Thessalonians 5:16
=====================================
UN MENSAJE DE
NUESTRO PARROCO
Queridos amigos,
ayudándola a levantarse.
nuestras vidas, encontramos significado y finalidad
siempre presente.
Paz,
Padre Steve
