“The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time”
“Survey says . . .”
The results of the Parish Survey have been compiled and reviewed with the Transition
Team by Fr. Dao. We want you to know what the Survey results tell us about our
parish, including the perceptions of our parishioners, suggestions for our future and our
hopes and dreams as a faith community. Members of the Transition Team will present
a PowerPoint report of the Transition Survey results, beginning 20 minutes before each
Mass, on the weekend of February 14 and 15. Fr. Dao takes seriously your input,
concerns and suggestions, and wants the parish to be an informed community of
believers. So, please plan to come to Mass early the weekend of February 14 and 15 so
that you may be “in the know.”

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
FIRST FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH Starts March 6, 2015
Are you personally connected to Jesus in the Eucharist?
If you’re married, or if you have a really good friend, then you know what it takes to be in a “relationship” with
someone. And we know that if we want that relationship to remain strong and have that relationship grow into
friendship, we have to do two things: one is to spend time together, and the other is to talk with each other
frequently.
As Catholic Christians we know that the best friend, and the love of our souls is Jesus Christ. Yet many of us
suffer from a feeling that we don’t really know who Jesus is, or we don’t feel like we have a personal relationship
with Him. Jesus is more like a figure from a history book to some of us, or some mysterious God-man to whom
we have obligations, yet we don’t really feel anything in our hearts towards Him.
One of the Answers to Deepening our Relationship With Christ
The solution to this personal struggle is to deepen your relationship with Jesus. Just as you would with any
human friend or your spouse, you have to make a decided effort to get to know Him better. You have to spend
time with Him, and speak with Him often. In other words, you need to spend time in prayer.
Eucharistic Adoration is the best way we have on this earth to spend a long time in quiet conversation with Jesus. You’ll recall that just before Jesus physically left the apostles and ascended to the Father, he reassured them,
“And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) This statement is fulfilled in the
reality of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, in the hands of the priest at Mass each day, reserved in the
tabernacles in the heart of our churches, and right before our very eyes in Eucharistic Adoration.
“Feel the Love” in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
What sets Eucharistic Adoration apart from other forms of prayer is that we are able to be in the same room
with Him present in the Blessed Sacrament, the Eucharist. Though veiled under the appearance of bread, in
reality we are gazing on His Sacred Heart, and the love that radiates from the little white host in the monstrance
- the beautiful stand which holds the host behind glass for the adorer to see - is transforming. Sitting or kneeling in the presence of Jesus in this way could be called “Son-bathing.” Like the rays of sunshine that warm our
skin, the rays of His love touch our souls and provide healing, reassurance, comfort, strength… whatever it is
we need in this life to help us live according to God’s will so we can one day live with Him forever in Heaven.
So when you visit Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar you can say the rosary, read a prayer book,
read from the bible…contemplate, meditate, they ways to speak with him are many…but most of all…make
that visit once a month – every first Friday…it doesn’t matter when…just visit and be with him every chance
you get. You’ll be amazed at the transformation your life will make if you take only a few minutes a month, just
for Him in Adoration. If you’d like to discuss this further please call me. Blessings, Deacon Pat

The Vocation and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World
Thank you for taking part in the survey for the Synod of Bishops: The Vocation and mission of the Family in the Church
and contemporary world. Your involvement is important and appreciated.
Before you proceed with taking the survey, it is very important that you have read the Lineamenta [the working document]
of the Synod that will take place in October 2015. A separate link to this document can be found here on the diocesan web
site. After you have read the Lineamenta, please respond to the questions in one of the two surveys linked on the diocesan
web site and submit them before 20 February, 2015. If you feel you cannot answer each question, please submit the responses that you did give.
As you fill out this questionnaire, don’t lose sight that it follows a process that should be respected: the first part is “Listening” and is oriented toward a description of the situation of the family in our world today; the second part is “Looking
at Christ” and is oriented toward a reflection on what the Gospel teaches us about the family; and the third part is “Confronting the situation” which inquires about the pastoral initiatives and political actions that we should promote in order
to improve the situation of families. Therefore, as you answer each question, please follow this methodology by taking into
account the part of th e questionnaire in which you are working.
Again thank you for your contribution to this important topic in our Church, today.
In Christ,
Rev. Rafael Partida
Episcopal Vicar, Riverside Pastoral Region

Rev. Rafael Partida
Vicario Episcopal, Región Pastoral de Riverside
Reflecting on God’s Word
Sue loves to iron clothes. In the process, she says, she also irons
out her life, all its wrinkles and creases. She says she can stand neither her clothes nor her life when they’re all rumpled. John runs
every day. A lot of folks do. He hasn’t missed a day in five years.
But it’s also where he and they pace out the rhythms of their lives.
More than one frazzled mother has locked herself in the bathroom
for twenty minutes of solitude and quasi-peace. Sometimes deserts look like bathrooms. Even teenagers know the need, so they
crank up some tunes, stretch out on their beds, and listen beyond
the music to the melodies played upon their lives.
I suspect there is a lot going on in those spaces. That’s where kids
get raised and loves get sorted and businesses are merged and
decisions unraveled and re-raveled. But somewhere in the midst
of it all we also make some decisions about who and what we want
to become in this life—at any age. That’s where goodness has a
chance to surface and values are affirmed and commitments are
remade for the umpteenth time and faith sprouts forth. And then
it becomes prayer, out of the silence and the stillness and the darkness of time spent alone.
