Feb. 8 Sunday - St. Edward Catholic Church

St. Edward Catholic Church
Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time
February 8, 2015
Let us understand the workings of God’s grace
From an explanation of Paul’s letter to the Galatians by
Saint Augustine, bishop
The Picture above of parishioner, Thomas
Colvin, was found on Bishop Michael
Barber's Blog, where he also said:
“I was so proud to see a large group from St.
Edward’s parish in Newark — with their
noticeable yellow t-shirts. “
Paul writes to the Galatians to make them
understand that by God’s grace they are no longer under
the law. When the Gospel was preached to them, there
were some among them of Jewish origin known as
circumcisers—though they called themselves
Christians—who did not grasp the gift they had received.
They still wanted to be under the burden of the law. Now
God had imposed that burden on those who were slaves
to sin and not on servants of justice. That is to say, God
had given a just law to unjust men in order to show them
their sin, not to take it away. For sin is taken away only by
the gift of faith that works through love. The Galatians had
already received this gift, but the circumcisers claimed
that the Gospel would not save them unless they
underwent circumcision and were willing to observe also
the other traditional Jewish rites.
The Galatians, therefore, began to question
Paul’s preaching of the Gospel because he did not
require Gentiles to follow Jewish observances as other
apostles had done. Even Peter had yielded to the
scandalized protests of the circumcisers. He pretended to
believe that the Gospel would not save the Gentiles
unless they fulfilled the burden of the law. But Paul
recalled him from such dissimulation, as is shown in this
very same letter. A similar issue arises in Paul’s letter to
the Romans, but with an evident difference. Through his
letter to them Paul was able to resolve the strife and
controversy that had developed between the Jewish and
Gentile converts.
In the present letter Paul is writing to persons
who were profoundly influenced and disturbed by the
circumcisers. The Galatians had begun to believe them
and to think that Paul had not preached rightly, since he
had not ordered them to be circumcised. And so the
Apostle begins by saying: I am amazed that you are so
quickly deserting him who called you to the glory of

Christ, and turning to another gospel.
After this there comes a brief introduction to the
point at issue. But remember in the very opening of the
letter Paul had said that he was an apostle not from men
nor by any man, a statement that does not appear in any
other letter of his. He is making it quite clear that the
circumcisers, for their part, are not from God but from
men, and that his authority in preaching the Gospel must
be considered equal to that of the other apostles. For he
was called to be an apostle not from men nor by any man,
but through God the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ.
CCD News
Attention Faith Formation Families. There will be no
classes this Monday, February 9, as we will be closed to
celebrate Lincoln’s Birthday.
Next weekend is a “Do This in Memory” weekend. Our
First Communion Families will be celebrating Mass with
us at the 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. Masses.
Pope Francis asks all families to enrich and energize
family life by praying the “World Meeting of Families
Prayer” each day for their own family’s personal
intention:
World Meeting of Families Prayer
God and Father of us all,
in Jesus, your Son and our Savior,
You have made us
Your sons and daughters
in the family of the Church.
May Your grace and love
Help our families
in every part of the world
be united to one another
in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy Family,
with the aid of Your Holy Spirit,
guide all families,
especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek your truth
and live in Your love.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen
Jesus, Mary and Joseph , pray for us!

he has put a questionnaire on line in both English

in the next two weeks. This is an important
contribution we can make to the prayerful reflection
of the whole Church on this important part of our life.

Taizé Prayer Service
Monday, February 9, 7:30 pm
Join us at The Cathedral of Christ the Light for a
traditional Taizé Prayer Service. Spend the evening
enjoying the interior elegance of the Cathedral, admiring
the breath-taking view of Lake Merritt across the way,
while hearing and singing hauntingly beautiful music.
Taizé is an ecumenical form of meditative prayer
originating from Taizé, France. Short verses of Taizé
chants are repeatedly sung, as a form of meditation. The
music is sung in English as well as in various other
languages and is accompanied by live musicians, such as
the piano and cello. There are readings, prayer
intercessions, silence, and an opportunity to venerate the
cross. Taizé is an hour long and is a wonderful way to
experience a peaceful, calming, and spiritually uplifting
time of prayer. All are welcome and no experience is
necessary.

MISSA DOMINGO V
DO TEMPO COMUM
Comentário Anúncio do Evangelho: resposta de Deus à
dor humana (Mc 1,29-39)
liturgia deste 5º domingo comum desde a I leitura, como
Jesus deixa a sinagoga, onde havia ensinado com
assim, Pedro lhe oferece hospitalidade.
apressadamente contaram o fato a Jesus, faz pensar a
servi-los”.
Missa Domingo V Do Tempo Comum
Assim, a
pecado. -Pe Carlos Henrique Nascimento
