After Sc hool Prog ram has Openings
The After School Program staff
would like to give you some
information about the program.
The After School Program provides homework assistance and
offers academic enrichment
supporting the classroom curriculum. Students participate in the
program from the end of their
regular school day to 6:00 PM.
The program is free to all 1st8th grade students enrolled at
Washington Colony.
Your son or daughter is invited
to participate in the After School
Program. If you would like your
child to be enrolled, please pick
up an application in either the
school office or in the cafeteria
during ASP hours. If you have
any further questions, please call
559-417-4076.
Parking Lot Drainage
It was impossible to miss the
amount of water that collected in
the school parking lot during the
rains we had in December! This is a
problem that will continue during
future rain storms until Fresno
County is able to repair and update
the drainage system around the
school property.
Hopefully we will have more rain
this winter. When it comes, we will
appreciate your cooperation and
assistance when the parking lot is
brimming with water. As a safety
precaution, the parking lot will be
closed while water is being pumped
out.
Students may be dropped off and
picked up at the Willamette gate
when the parking lot is blocked off.
In addition, that gate will remain
open for parents who need access
during the school day if the front
parking lot is blocked off. Thank
you for your cooperation!

El personal del Programa Después de la Escuela desea darles
información sobre el programa.
El Programa Después de la Escuela provee asistencia con tarea

Drenaje del Estacionamiento
¡Fue imposible no darse cuenta de
la cantidad de agua recolectada en el
estacionamiento de la escuela durante las lluvias de diciembre! Este es
un problema que continuará en las
tormentas futuras hasta que el Condado de Fresno pueda reparar y
actualizar el Sistema de drenaje alrededor de la propiedad de la escuela.
Esperamos tener más lluvia este
invierno. Cuando llegue, esperamos
su asistencia y cooperación cuando
el estacionamiento esté rebalsando
con agua. Como precaución, el estacionamiento estará cerrado mientras
que el agua esté siendo drenada.
Los estudiantes van a poder ser
dejados y recogidos en el portón
Willamette cuando el estacionamiento esté bloqueado. Además, el
portón va a permanecer abierto para
los padres que necesiten acceso durante el día escolar si el estacionamiento del frente está cerrado.

Kindergarten, (Mrs. Davis and Mr.
Schaffer): It is great to be back at school!
Happy New Year!
February is a very busy month with the
100th Day, Valentine’s Day, and the Presidents’ Birthdays. We have several activities
planned around these events.
We will celebrate the 100th day of school
Friday, February 6th. We have been anxiously awaiting this day and have many fun
things planned! You are welcome to come
and help us celebrate! We will have a Valentine’s Day party on Friday, February
13th. More information will come home
closer to the date.
Please return progress report slips if you
have not already. Also, please continue to
work on sight words, blending, and numbers 10-20 with your child; they are doing
great! We look forward to seeing you at
the many activities planned for February.
First Grade, (Mrs. Dack and Mrs.
Pallas): First graders will be learning
about different animals in reading. The
stories will practice new phonics skills as
the students learn about some interesting
animals. Please continue to read with your
child at home. Listen to them read the
books that they bring home. Practice, practice, is the key to becoming a good reader.
In math we will be learning addition and
subtractions facts to 20. Please continue to
review place value, numbers to 120, and
skip counting. Practice counting by 10’s,
5’s and 2’s.
The students have also been learning
about the weather in science. Notice the
weather outside and talk about it with your
child. A day can have more than one kind
of weather. It can start out rainy and then
turn sunny. If you have an outdoor thermometer, notice the temperature and let
your child read the numbers.
Since February has two presidents’ holiPAGE 3
days, it is the perfect time to learn about
our country’s symbols. The students will
learn about our country’s flag, the Statue
of Liberty, the eagle, and singing patriotic
songs. It’s always great to see children
begin to understand what a wonderful
country we live in.
Third Grade, (Mrs. Sweet and Mrs.
Martinez): Third grade is working hard
as we start the new year. We are reading
incredible stories and having fun with those
stories. We have read about a dog who
comes out of a volcano, a magician, and a
mysterious giant. We are moving into
reading informational text and the features
of informational text. We are writing paragraphs about what we are learning.
In math we are learning time, measurement, weight and volume. Please continue
to practice your math facts so you can pass
your math fact test.
The more reading your child does, the
better reader they will be!
Fifth Grade, (Mrs. Barker and Mrs.
Hawkins): 2/3, 3/4, 6/8-this should tell
you fifth grade has entered the world of
fractions in math. Students are learning to
add and subtract fractions with like and
unlike denominators. They can even tell
you which ones need to be reduced to simplest form! Fractions are fun! However,
students still need to know their multiplication and division facts, so be sure to
practice with your students to help them
be successful with fractions.
For language arts we are still reading Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. The
students are thinking about how others
should be treated fairly, and noticing how
the characters have changed throughout the
story.
We will be finishing up with atoms and
matter in science, and learning about the
American colonies in history. Be sure students are reading 20 minutes each night.
Seventh Grade, (Mrs. Huffmon): Seventh graders are happy to be back at school
after a restful winter break. They are already challenging themselves in the classroom each day, and they have much to
look forward to in the coming months.

like terms, coefficients, algebraic terms,
and more.
Richard Martinez-We are learning about
very cool variables and expressions. Also.
Mr. Marquez showed us cool, easy ways to
do it.
Science: Atiana Aguilar-During science we
are learning about photosynthesis and cellular respiration. It’s mostly about how
cells, plants, and animals get food.
Sunny Williams-We are learning about plant
and animal cells and how they get energy.
For example, plant cells have to go through
photosynthesis to get their food.
Language Arts: Alysa Espinoza-We are
working on compound complex sentences
and starting a new vocabulary program.
Richard Martinez-Accelerated Reader is
really fun, and I’m getting a lot of points.
Social Studies: Sunny Williams-We are
learning about Africa and what Africans did
for a living and how they traded with others.
Titus Marple-We played a game called
“Quiz-Quiz-Trade.” We started with a card
and had to answer the question that was on
it.
Electives: Audrey Acosta-In Art we are
drawing our faces on the computer.
Destiney Salazar-In Leadership we are doing
a lot of practice on what it takes to be a
leader. We are also planning out our Fun

Febrero es un mes bien ocupado con el
Día 100, el Día de San Valentín y los Cumpleaños de los Presidentes. Tenemos varias
actividades planeadas alrededor de estos
eventos.
Vamos a celebrar el Día 100 de la escuela
el viernes 6 de febrero. Hemos estado esperando ansiosamente ese día y tenemos
muchas cosas divertidas planeadas.
¡Ustedes están invitados a venir y ayudarnos a celebrar! Vamos a tener una fiesta del
Día de San Valentín el viernes 13 de febrero. Más información será mandada a los
hogares al acercarse la fecha.
Por favor regresen las hojas de reporte del
progreso si todavía no lo han hecho. También, por favor sigan trabajando con las
palabras a simple vista, mezclar y con los
números del 10-20 con sus niños; ellos
están haciendo un gran trabajo. Esperamos
verlos en las diversas actividades que tenemos planeadas para febrero.
Primer Grado, (Sra. Dack y Sra. Pallas): Los niños del primer grado estarán
aprendiendo sobre los diferentes animales
en lectura. Las historias practicarán nuevas
habilidades fónicas según los estudiantes
aprendan sobre algunos animales interesantes. Por favor sigan leyendo con sus niños
en la casa. Escúchenlos leer los libros que

En matemáticas vamos a estar aprendiendo

Martinez): El tercer grado está trabajando arduamente al comenzar el año nuevo.
Estamos leyendo historias increíbles y divirtiéndonos con esas historias. Hemos
leído sobre un perro que sale de un volcán,
un mago y un misterioso gigante. Nos estamos moviendo a leer texto informativo y
las características del texto informativo.

denominadores comunes y no comunes.

estudiantes todavía necesitan saber sus tablas de multiplicación y de división, así que

Quetzalli Lopez-In Yearbook we are working on the pages for the yearbook, and it is
super fun!
Marcus Garza-Khan Academy math has been
good because I’m learning easier.
Lizbeth Zamora-In Technology we have been
on the computers making a comic. Also,
we have been using Typing Web.
Extra Curricular Activities: Derek Morris-I am on a travel team for baseball. I
really love baseball. It’s my favorite sport.
Ava Ross-I’m in gymnastics right now, and I
love going to competitions.
Alysa Espinoza-In soccer we are having our
end-of-season tournament. If we win, we
play for first or second. Let’s go, Patriots!
Upcoming Months: Isabella Tijerina-I am
looking forward to events like Fun Friday
and dances. I am also looking forward to
going on our class field trip to San Francisco.
Jackie Huizar– I’m looking forward to
learning more in my academic classes such
as science, math, social studies, and language arts.
Students are enjoying their time in seventh
grade, as they are exploring their talents
and interests on a daily basis. They are
growing both academically and socially,
and they are excited about finishing the
year strong. Keep it up, Patriots!
Eighth Grade: (Mr. Jennings): The
school year is flying by and our eighth
graders are getting ready to take one of the
most important assessments for the year,
the Constitution Test. We are reading
material together as a class, and students
are taking notes daily. As you know, this is
a requirement for promotion from eighth
grade. I encourage you to assist your children as much as possible, and here are
some ways you can do so:

Ask to see the notes they have taken
and read through them together.

Make flash-cards together of the material and study them.

Make quizzes of your own for them
based on their notes, discussing any
missed items.

If you have internet access, do online
searches of educational Constitution
sites. Some include puzzles and
games.

Check the information that I have
posted on our Google classroom site.
All documents that are handed out in
class will be posted here as well.
With your help at home, your students will
have a better chance of succeeding on this
exam and enjoying all the end-of-year
eighth grade activities.
6th Graders Need Tdap Immunization Before Entering 7th Grade
All students currently in 6th grade will need to have a Tdap immunization before they start 7th grade.
This is an adolescent whooping cough booster which protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis).
This immunization is required by law (AB 354).
Please obtain the vaccination from your child’s doctor or at the local clinic. Then provide your child’s immunization record to the
school as proof.
Without proof of your child having had the immunization, he/she will not be allowed to start 7th grade.

Octavo Grado: (Sr. Jennings): El año
escolar va volando y nuestros estudiantes
del octavo grado están preparándose para
tomar una de las evaluaciones más importantes del año, el Examen de la Constitu-
ción. Estamos leyendo juntos el material en
la clase y los estudiantes están tomando
notas a diario. Como saben, esto es un
requisito para la graduación del octavo
grado. Los animo a que ayuden a sus niños
lo más posible y aquí hay algunas formas de
hacerlo:
 Pídanles que les enseñen las notas que
han tomado y léanlas juntos.
 Hagan tarjetas de estudio del material y
estúdienlas.
 Hagan cuestionarios para ellos basados en
sus notas, discutan cualquier tema que
no sepan.
 Si tienen acceso a Internet, investiguen
en línea en los sitios educativos sobre
la Constitución. Algunos tienen rompecabezas y juegos.
 Revisen la información que pongo en el
sitio de nuestro salón en Google. Todos los documentos que damos en la
clase están ahí también.
Con su ayuda en la casa, sus estudiantes van
a tener una mejor oportunidad para tener
éxito en este examen y van a disfrutar de
todas las actividades de final del año en el
octavo grado.
Los Estudiantes del 6º Grado Necesitan la Vacuna “Tdap” Antes de Entrar al 7º
Todos los estudiantes actuales en 6º grado tendrán que recibir la vacuna Tdap antes de entrar en el 7º grado.
Esta es una segunda vacuna para la tos ferina en adolecentes la cual protege contra el tétano, la difteria y la tos ferina (pertussis).
Esta vacuna es requerida por la ley (AB 354).
