Adkisson makes mayoral bid official

Tommy Adkisson officially
announced his bid for the San
Antonio Mayoral race at City Hall
on Wednesday.
The Southside native spent 16
years as Bexar County Commissioner in Precinct 4 and four years
as a member of the Texas House
of Representatives. Adkisson left
his seat on Commissioner’s Court
to run for County Judge in the
2014 midterm elections, eventually losing to Nelson Wolff.
Despite the defeat, Adkisson
said there is more work he can
do for San Antonio as a “stay-athome mayor.”
“We’ll look forward to getting

sure that we have balanced growth

wouldn’t be proud to live in.”
If elected, Adkisson will become the first San Antonio mayor
from the South Side in more than
100 years. When asked what his
South Side San Antonio heritage
would bring to the mayor’s office, Adkisson said it would bring
more opportunities to underrepresented neighborhoods.
“I think that means everybody
has a shot, simply put,” Adkisson
said. “It’s an area where seldom
representatives were found, when
I got started years ago. Everybody

It’s no secret the art of letter
writing is fast dying out, but the
Briscoe Western Art Museum
and San Antonio B-cycle are on
a quest to bring it back during the
most romantic time of the year.
The program is known as Pony
Express Love Letters and through
Feb. 12, the museum will feature
a letter writing station complete
with paper, envelopes, pens, and
even a vintage 1930s Remington
typewriter to help you craft the
perfect love letter.
If you’re lacking inspiration,
fear not. Books about love, poetry
and mad libs will be available to
unleash your inner Pablo Neruda.

everything you need to craft the
perfect love letter this Valentine’s
Day season.

Boy saves his family
from burning home

It was an early Thursday morning, but 12-year-old Jacob Munoz
wasn’t in bed or getting ready for
school. Instead, he stood outside
watching a fire engulf his home.
On Jan.15, the San Antonio Fire
Department arrived to Jacob’s
house, located on the 4300 block
of Weir.
By the time the fire department
arrived, the house was already
ravaged by flames. The fire was
extinguished; however, there was
extensive damage to the bedrooms
and living room. Smoke damage
affected the rest of the home, too.
What could have been a tragedy
is instead being celebrated as a
tribute to life, love and courage.
In a selfless act of courage,
Jacob rescued his mother, 4-yearold brother, and grandmother
from danger. He is now a hero in
the eyes Fire Chief Charles Hood.
“I woke up choking on smoke,
and I saw my room on fire. There
were flames on my bed,” Jacob
said. “I got scared, and I broke a
window to escape, but couldn’t.”
Jacob found his escape blocked
by burglar bars. With little time
to think, he rushed through his
house, awakened his family and
escaped the burning house with
them.
“It was adrenaline,” Jacob
reminisced. “From there, everything —it just went so quick. After
waking them up and escaping,
well, there was nothing we could
do after. I was so scared.”
Experts believe the fire started
in Jacobs’s room, where he lay
asleep. Suspicions confirmed a
space heater came in touch with
Jacob’s bedding, causing the
flame.
Without Jacob’s courage, the
entire family may have perished
under the flames. Nobody in the
house was injured. Jacob was
treated for minor cuts on the arm
and mild smoke inhalation.
“I was so scared. all of my
things were burning, but that stuff
was replaceable. Family members
aren’t,” Jacob said.
SAFD uses Jacob’s story to
inform the public of fire safety
awareness to help families stay
safe and escape, should trouble
arise. They have a few simple
rules to follow.
“Make sure that all space heaters aren’t in contact with anything
combustible, that all houses have
smoke detectors. Smoke is a
killer in house fires,” Fire Chief
Hood said.
“We need to make sure we
teach our children to crawl under
smoke, stop, drop and roll. Find
an escape point when they get out.
Doing so may help prevent more
tragedies.”
Jacob’s tale isn’t over, yet.
A couple of weeks after the
fire, Hood gave tribute to Jacob,
lauding him for his heroic efforts.
Jacob’s parents and grandmother are elated at the recognition
Jacob has received.
“I’ve always had talks with him
[Jacob]:‘you can talk the talk, but
can you walk the walk?’”, John
Olivarez, father of Jacob said. “He
matured that day. I’m so proud of
my boy. I know he wasn’t expecting this. I’m honored. It’s not
something you’d ever want your
child to go through, but he did the
right thing.
I only hope our son [Johnny]
looks up to Jacob, and gets courage. It could be any life that he can
save, and make a great impact in
anyone else’s life.”
“We could have died, and it’s
thanks to Jacob we are here,” Denise Munoz, mother of Jacob said.
“It’s so hard to take it in, but I’m
grateful for my son.”
At the presentation hosted by
Hood, Jacob received a plaque
of honor, and a challenge coin:
one of the most hallowed awards
given by the Fire Chief; reserved
for those that achieve the greatest feats.
“I don’t consider myself a hero.
I was just helping my family,”
Jacob said. “But this coin will be
like a treasure. I’ll never get rid
of it. I’ll keep it close forever.”
Hood thinks otherwise.
“He was a hero, and we are
very happy for what he did,”
Hood said.
During the presentation, Jacob
was asked to speak at the podium.
He had a notebook with a speech
written inside, but was so overcome with emotion, instead he
began to cry.

Déjenla morir en paz
Hay muertos
a quienes los vivos nunca dejan
en paz. Este es el
caso de Brittany
Maynard, quien
se quitó la vida
Jorge Ramos el pasado prime­
ro de noviembre, luego de ser diagnosticada
con un cáncer cerebral incurable.
Tenía solo 29 años de edad. Su
muerte se sigue debatiendo en
Estados Unidos. Hay muchos que
creen que nunca debió suicidarse
con ayuda médica y que debió, en
cambio, dejar que la enfermedad
la matara lenta y dolorosamente.
El tumor inoperable de Brittany estaba alojado en la parte del
cerebro que controla la memoria,
el lenguaje y la toma de decisiones. Dos doctores, que no se
conocían, concluyeron de manera
independiente que ella tenía menos de seis meses de vida.
En ese momento Brittany hizo
dos cosas: primero, una lista con
todo lo que tenía pendiente –incluyendo una visita al cañón del
Colorado– y dos, un plan para
morir en sus propios términos,
antes que el cáncer afectara seria
e irremediablemente sus facultades mentales.
Ella y su esposo, Daniel Díaz,
de origen cubano, se mudaron
de California a Oregón –uno de
los tres estados norteamericanos que permiten la eutanasia o
“suicidio asistido” –y buscaron
ayuda médica para que Brittany
pudiera quitarse la vida con medicamentos.
Hace unos días conocí a Daniel. Lleva todavía el anillo de
casados. Cada vez que habla de
ella, casi como un reflejo, los ojos
se le llenan de lágrimas. Daniel es
un hombre en luto, de esos que
cargan un dolor inocultable.
¿Cómo se quitó la vida Brittany?, le pregunté. “El primero
de noviembre nos levantamos,
desayunamos, fuimos a caminar
con la familia y amigos”, me dijo
Daniel. “Al llegar a la casa ella
supo que ya era el momento. El
dolor que estaba sufriendo era
cada día peor. Estaba acostada
en la cama: el paciente tiene
que tomar cuatro o cinco onzas
de líquido”. Ese líquido es una
potente combinación de sedantes
y depresores del sistema respiratorio. “A los cinco minutos se
durmió y a los 30 minutos las
respiraciones bajaron a un punto
en que murió, tranquila, en paz”.
Este método –en que el pacien­
te se quita su propia vida– no
tiene los problemas legales que
enfrentó, por ejemplo, el doctor
Jack Kevorkian. ‘Él le administraba medicamentos para morir a
sus pacientes y eso lo llevó a la
cárcel varias veces. En el caso de
Brittany, ella recibió las recetas
de un médico y ella se encargó,
personalmente, de tomar esa
dosis mortal.
Como Brittany dio entrevistas
antes de su muerte, promoviendo
el derecho a morir con dignidad,
algunos creían que no estaba
tan enferma. Pero Daniel me
cuenta que las convulsiones la
paralizaban por horas, no podía
hablar y que su deterioro físico
era patente.
La iglesia católica se opuso
abiertamente al plan de Brittany.
En diciembre, el papa Francisco
incluso escribió en un mensaje a
los fieles católicos: “Que mentira
tan grande se oculta detrás de
ciertas frases que tanto insisten en
la ‘calidad de la vida’ que hacen
pensar a la gente que las vidas afectadas por enfermedades graves
no valen la pena de ser vividas”.
Y se lo leí a Daniel.
“Mi esposa nunca fue muy
religiosa”, me dijo. “Pero ella fue
muy buena persona. Fue maravillosa. Trabajaba con niños. Fue
muy cariñosa. Así que, si hay
cielo, san Pedro o Dios le dirían:
‘Tú no tienes que sufrir para estar
aquí con nosotros. Bienvenida.
Entra’”.
Daniel me dijo que la mayoría
de las personas desearían morir
mientras duermen y sin dolor.
Y eso, según él, es exactamente
lo que hizo Brittany. “Lo único
que hizo Brittany fue controlar
el dolor y evitar una muerte muy
horrible”.
A Daniel no le gusta dar entrevistas para la televisión y,
claramente, es un hombre que
está sufriendo por la pérdida de

para ella. Llevaban apenas un
año de casados cuando Brittany
fue diagnosticada con cáncer
cerebral.
Pero Daniel no quiere dar
vuelta a la página. Me pareció que

con su mujer. “Yo estoy haciendo
esto porque le hice una promesa
a Brittany; tratar de pasar una
legislación en California para que
los californianos no se tenga que
mudar a otro estado para morir en

Ensure you have Affordable Health Insurance for 2015
Last week I
met with local
San Antonio
leaders and
elected officials in WashLloyd Doggett ington about
their priorities
for San Antonio. This week is
the last chance to take care of an
important priority for your family: ensuring access to affordable healthcare. The deadline
to enroll for health insurance in
2015 is Sunday, Feb. 15.
Whether you or someone
you know here in the Alamo
City signed up for coverage
last year or you are shopping
for health insurance for the
first time, you still have a few
days to sign up for affordable
health insurance and the financial security it brings for 2015.
Through the Affordable Care
Act (ACA), the government has
set up a Health Insurance Marketplace—at heathcare.gov—to
help customers shop for private
health insurance from several
issuers in one place. The ACA
provides a way for you to get all
the benefits your neighbors are
getting with some help to pay
premiums from the government.
The ACA has improved benefits for Americans in a number
of ways. Now, seniors on Medicare can get mammograms,
colonoscopies, and an annual
wellness visit for free and their
prescription drug costs have
been greatly reduced as the
“donut hole” in coverage is
gradually closed. Important preventative services for women,
including prenatal care, are now
available at no cost as well.
Young adults at UTSA, SAC,
and other local colleges can
stay on their parents’ insurance
until the age of 26, and there
are plans for small business
owners through the Small Business Health Options Program
(SHOP).
But just last week House
Republicans voted to repeal
the ACA again. While there are
undoubtedly improvements to
make to the law, the Affordable
Care Act is a vital first step to
providing access to a family
doctor and affordable health
care for all Americans. As of
today, over 90,000 people in the
greater San Antonio area had
signed up for insurance using
the Marketplace for 2015.
Purchasing insurance through
the ACA’s Health Insurance
Marketplace is not necessary
for everyone. If you already
have insurance through your
employer, Medicare, TRICARE, or some other source,
you are not required to buy
additional insurance. In fact, it
is against the law for someone
who knows that you have Medicare to sell you a plan from the
Marketplace.
No matter where you get your
insurance, you should review
your current plan to ensure
it still meets your healthcare
needs. Contact your insurer
with any questions.
If this is your first time shopping in the Marketplace, you
should visit the website to set
up an account. If you signed
up for insurance through the
Marketplace last year, log into
your Marketplace account to
write down your 14-digit plan
ID, as you will need this number to change your plan if you
decide to do so.
In the Marketplace, you can
compare 2015 plan costs and
benefits and select the plan that
works best for you. A new plan
may be available or premiums
may have changed from last
year. If you had coverage last
year, your application will be
pre-filled with your information.
Even if your application is
filled out, however, you should
check and update your personal
information, such as income,
household size, and contact
information. More than 8 of 10
people choosing insurance on
the Marketplace benefit from a
tax credit to help them pay for
coverage. Even a small change
could affect the size of your
premium tax credit that helps
pay for your insurance and the
cost of your monthly premium.
Regardless of what plan you
decide is right for you and your
family, you must be signed up
by Feb. 15 in order to secure
coverage for 2015.
There are a number of community organizations that are
offering free help to sign up for
health coverage in San Antonio,
including CommuniCare and
CentroMed health clinics. For a
full listing of places near you to
get enrollment assistance, visit

across from the downtown Frost
drive-in bank, near the CHRISTUS Children’s Hospital or
Santa Rosa, is there to help my

Armed with the facts, you
will be able to make informed
health care decisions for you
and your family.
Just a Thought: Valentine’s Day
This co­
ming Saturday, Feb.
14 is Valentine’s
Day. Also
known as
St. Valentine’s

Day of the
Feast of Saint Valentine, it is
associated with romantic love.
A popular myth of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he
was imprisoned for performing
weddings for soldiers who were
forbidden to marry.
Ironically as a former Justice of the Peace, I performed
many wedding ceremonies for
numerous military members
and their soon to be spouses on
Valentine’s Day. One particular
wedding I performed three years
ago I still remember it as if it
were last week.
The young man in question
was in the Air Force and his
parents were not thrilled that he
was marrying his high school
sweetheart. At the courthouse,
minutes before the ceremony
was about to begin, the parents
unexpectedly showed up and
whisked him away for over 40
minutes in an effort to convince
him not to marry her since they
didn’t approve.
The good news is that they
brought him back to the courthouse and the ceremony proceeded. I eventually pronounced
them husband and wife. As the
parents glared with their arms
crossed during the nuptials
in the back of the courtroom,
I conveniently didn’t speak
the optional phrase, “Is there
anyone here who can show just
cause why these two people
shouldn’t be married?” It was a
short marriage ceremony.
At another Valentine’s Day
wedding over four years ago that
I performed, took place at a flea
market on Fredericksburg Road.
The couple met at the flea market where they both worked a
booth located next to each other.
Every weekend, they would
sell their products at the market
and when they didn’t have customers, they spent time visiting
with each other manning their
booths. One thing led to another
and they became engaged and I
was the lucky Judge who officiated the wedding.
I performed the wedding at
the flea market in the office
used by all the concessionaires.
Other than family, most of the
attendees were also people who
rented booths at the market. In
their forties, neither one of them
had been married before. That
was definitely a unique wedding.
As stated earlier, Valentine’s
Day was first associated with
romantic love in 18th-century
England, where it evolved into
an occasion in which lovers
expressed their love for each
other by presenting flowers, and
sending greeting cards known as
“Valentines.”
Those Valentine’s Day symbols are used today to include
the heart-shaped, doves, and
the figure of the winged cupid.
Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given
way to mass-produced greeting
cards.
Eleven years ago while serving as a Balcones Heights City
Councilman, I convinced my
fellow council members to appropriate some funds to host
a Valentine’s Day Party at
the Crossroads Mall Convention Center. We hosted it for a
number of our senior citizens.
We dubbed it the “Sweetheart
Party.”
Over 50 “young” people attended and danced to the oldies
played by a DJ who specialized
in the classics of the big bands
and singers of the ‘40s and ‘50s.
Growing up in the ‘50s as a kid,
I remembered the music as well.
We also presented a single
carnation to all the ladies when
they came in to the venue. It
was an awesome event and the
seniors talked about that Valentine’s Day for a long time.
There was some speculation at
the time of making it an annual
event. Unfortunately, that did
not happen.
Next Saturday, many couples,
young and old, are expected to
exchange vows, since it is the
most popular day in the year
to get married. Whether or not
you get married, it is still a good
idea to at least send someone
you care about, a Valentine’s
Day Card.
And as always, what I write is
“Just a Thought.”

Affording a paid city council
is back on the table
The matter has surfaced over
and over, well before single member city council districts were
established in the City of San
Antonio.
A salary be paid to city council
members and the mayor.
After all, since the existing city
charter went in to effect in the
1950s council members have been
paid $20 per council session and
the mayor $50 per session.
Back in the day, that was not
seen as chump change. Nowadays,
however, it is because that’s all the
money they make for each representing more than 100,000 people.
The latest move comes from
The Charter Review Commission.
Both it and City Council want
your input on the proposed salary
for council and the mayor.
The suggested starting salary
for a council member would be
$45,722 per year and the mayor
receiving $61,725 for that same
time period. Add to that yearly
raises measured by the cost of
living index.
Sounds fair, when you consider
that across the street commissioners and the county judge are
pulling a chuck of change and
unlike council members they meet
twice a week and the county duties
are left to individual department
heads.
Judges rule their own courts.
Law enforcement comes under the
district attorney for legal matters
and under the sheriff’s umbrella
for public safety, which covers the
detention center. In other words
every department has someone
in charge and they answer to that
someone.
The city on the other hand has
department heads and they answer
to their staff who do all the leg
work behind the scenes.
The City Manager’s Office has
nine assistant and deputy city
manager’s working for the city
manager. The city manager receives a yearly salary of $422,000
a year, plus the perks.
They all answer to city council,
in a manner of speaking because
this is a city manager form of
government running one of the
nation’s largest city.
In other words, the city manager
is the CEO and the council is the
board of directors and each has its
own fiefdom to run.
Gone are the days of running
in and off of the council offices
to deal with city business. Now
council members have assigned
parking slots so they can come
to city hall and meet with their
respective teams.
As expected all this talk of
money isn’t sitting well with a
number of people and the most
vocal to date is George Rodriguez
who has taken the banner from tax
activist C.A. Stubbs.
Long before there was a Tea
Party there was C.A. Stubbs and
his Homeowner Taxpayer Association who held council’s feet
to the fire. They were powerful
enough to pass term limits.
Rodriguez believes if the city
council gets paid it should run
the city and not the city manager.
You’re thoughts will get a
chance to be heard when the first
of three public hearings beginning
this Wednesday and then again on
the two following Wednesdays.
All hearings will be in council
chambers.

Pope Francis will make history
when he addresses a joint meeting
of Congress in Washington, D.C.
on Sept. 24.
The address will mark the first
time the head of the world’s Roman
Catholics will address Congress.
The trip, which is the first to the
U.S. during his two-year papacy,
includes a White House meeting
with President Barack Obama, a
speech to the United Nations in
New York and a Catholic rally for
families in Philadelphia.
“We’re humbled that the Holy
Father has accepted our invitation and certainly look forward to

legislation to give every teacher
the overdue pay raise they need
and deserve.

State Affairs Committee this session I will work to get additional

local jobs and provide the tools

Flaco Jiménez...
San Antonio, a La Prensa.
El acordeonista recibió su quinto
y más reciente premio Grammy en
1999, pero su trayectoria musical
comenzó mucho antes.
Jiménez nació en 1939 en una
familia dotada en el ámbito musical.
Su abuelo Patricio Jiménez fue el
primero en adaptar la polka centroeuropea al sentir tejano por medio del acordeón. Asimismo, la saga
continuó con Santiago Jiménez,
padre de Flaco, quien grabó varios
discos exitosos que difundieron el
género de música ahora conocido
como Tex-Mex.
Sin embargo, fue “Flaco” quien
llevó el estilo mucho más allá.
De tanto ver a su padre tocar,
Jiménez captó el sentido y la alegría
del acordeón a los seis años.
El músico recuerda que su padre
tocaba en shows durante los fines de
semana y trabajaba en algo distinto
durante el resto de la semana para
mantener a su familia.
“Cuando mi papá se iba a trabajar le agarraba su instrumento y lo
estudiaba y lo practicaba sin que se
diera cuenta”, relató Jiménez. “Mi
papá no era de esos regañones, pero
no quería que se enojara porque le
agarraba su instrumento”.
Pero la travesura no le duró por
mucho tiempo.
Un día inesperado, su padre llegó
del trabajo antes de lo normal. Al
oír que alguien tocaba el acordeón,
Don Santiago no entró derecho a la
casa sino que se quedó en la entrada
con la puerta lo suficientemente
cerrada para esconderse y lo suficientemente abierta para poder oír
con claridad.
“Yo no sabía que él estaba parado ahí escuchándome y cuando
entró al cuarto venía en lágrimas,
llorando y me abrazó muy fuerte
de gusto”, relató Jiménez. “Fue una
cosa tan bonita para él ver que yo ya
podía tocar la acordeón”, recordó.

papá lo dejó usar su acordeón libremente. A los siete años Jiménez
se presentaba en conciertos y a los
15 años empezó a grabar música.
Hoy en día es reconocido como
un artista emblemático y como uno
de los pioneros del movimiento musical Tex-Mex, aunque también ha
tocado diferentes géneros musicales
tal y como el rock, pop, blues, jazz
y rancheras.
El músico ha tocado su acordeón
con grupos como los Texas Tornados y Los Super Seven.
“Flaco” Jiménez ganó su primer
Grammy en 1986 por “Ay, te dejo
en San Antonio”, una canción de
su padre.
Su segundo Grammy lo recibió
como integrante de los Texas Tornados en 1990.
Seis años después recibió otro
de estos premios musicales por su
trabajo como solista en el álbum
Flaco Jiménez. Y en 1999 recibió
un nuevo Grammy por su canción
“Said and Done” y otro como parte
del grupo Los Super Seven.
Además, ha grabado con los Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Dr. John y
Ry Cooder, entre otros.
Jiménez le comentó a La Prensa
que nunca se imaginó llegar tan
lejos, pues él solo quería pasársela
bien y ofrecerle música a la gente
para bailar.
“Estoy muy satisfecho de lo
que he hecho con la ayuda de mis
compañeros, de las compañías disqueras y la radio, que lo empujaron
a uno para poder llegar al triunfo”,
comentó el acordeonista. “Bueno,
para escucharse uno en la radio y
formar un nombre”.
Sin embargo, Jiménez no quiere
que lo recuerden como una estrella
artística.
“Yo soy nada más que un amigo,
un acordeonista que comparte
la alegría de la acordeón con el
público”, expresó. “No me siento
como alguien tan especial porque

todos somos humanos. El día que
yo falle o cuando ya no esté aquí,

El talentoso “Flaco” Jiménez
aún no suelta la acordeón y sigue
grabando con diferentes grupos que
lo invitan a participar en proyectos.
“El acordeón, hasta la fecha,
es parte de mi vida, así como fue
parte de la vida de mi papá cuando
él también aprendió de mi abuelo,”
concluyó Jiménez.
El sanantoniano recibirá su
gramófono de oro el 8 de febrero
en Los Ángeles.

su Comunidad

VIA Metropolitan Transit trae modernización y
muchas mejoras en toda la zona de servicio. Estamos
aumentando los niveles de servicio de autobuses en
un 3.8 por ciento, ayudando a nuestros trabajadores a
mejorar sus habilidades y capacidades, la introducción
de nuevas tecnologías para el pago de tarifas, y la
coordinación con el Ayuntamiento de San Antonio en el
esfuerzo local de planificación integral.

Con los aumentos generales de servicio que vienen, los
pasajeros de VIA también verán mejoras tangibles al
abordar VIA. Estamos iniciando la compra de autobuses
nuevos para reemplazar a más de la mitad de la flota en
los próximos cinco años (con la mayoría de los nuevos
autobuses propulsados por gas natural comprimido),
y estamos instalando 900-1, 000 nuevas paradas de
autobús en el próximo par de año.

Los aumentos en los niveles de servicio iniciarán con el
nuevo año. El 5 de enero de 2015, la frecuencia de los
servicios se mejorarán en más de una docena de las
rutas más concurridas en todos los sectores de la zona
de servicio. La mayoría de estas rutas actualmente tienen
los autobuses cada 30 minutos durante las horas punta
en los días de semana, pero después del 5 de enero las
frecuencias mejorarán a cada 20 minutos, en la mayoría
de los casos. Rutas del lado oeste de la ciudad que están
siendo mejoradas incluyen:

La fase 1 de este proyecto, que incluye la rehabilitación
del “depot building”, se ha completado. La instalación
está en funcionamiento y es el nuevo hogar de las
oficinas ejecutivas de VIA. Fase 2, que incluye una
plaza de tránsito a través de la calle del “depot
building”, está en marcha. Los elementos visuales
iniciales de la plaza son evidentes con la instalación de
las columnas con dosel y vigas. Esta fase está prevista
para finalizarse antes de septiembre de 2015.
SH 151 pArK & ride
Las instalaciones Carretera Estatal 151 “park and ride”
servirán a viajeros procedentes de los suburbios
occidentales que viajan a la zona del centro. Esta
instalación se posicionará para conectar y dar servicio
a los principales centros de actividad en la ciudad, y
potencialmente sirviendo a las rutas “express” 64 y
65 y otras rutas de autobuses.
Corredor SUr/oeSte meJorAS de
tránSito
VIA está llevando a cabo un estudio sobre el corredor
sur / oeste, que incluye Southwest Military Drive de la
IH-37 hacia el este al General McMullen Drive / Bynum
en el oeste, así como el General McMullen Drive /
Bynum y Zarzamora Street desde la unidad militar en
el sur a Babcock / Fredericksburg Road en el norte.
El plan le recomendará un conjunto de servicios
de autobuses Primo y de mejoras a segmentos
del corredor, y que incluirá elementos de diseño y
especificaciones técnicas que orientarán la ejecución
del proyecto previo a la puesta en marcha del servicio.

la vida de la región: San Antonio
Stock Show & Rodeo, que iniciará
el 11 de febrero ofreciendo un amplio programa de entretenimiento
que –aparte de las festividades
que reflejan la cultura del oeste
norteamericano– tiene un impacto
económico que beneficia a toda la
ciudad.
Durante 19 días –hasta el día
primero de marzo– la ciudad de San
Antonio vivirá una fiesta de música,
conciertos, exposición ganadera y
variedad de entretenimiento para

sabor auténtico de Texas.
Y para alentar al público a participar en las múltiples actividades,
como preámbulo, el sábado 7 de
febrero tendrá lugar el séptimo
Heritage Parade and Cattle Drive
que por siete años consecutivos se
ha presentado como una muestra de
la tradición y la cultura de Texas.
Este será complementado con la
recia presencia de cowboys conduciendo el ganado de long horns

La conducción del ganado (Cattle
Drive) está programada para iniciarse a las 11 de la mañana partiendo

donde se apostan miles de espectadores para disfrutar el paso del
ganado y seguidamente a los carros

sión de El Álamo una conferencia
con los medios informativos para
anunciar los detalles del evento, que
el año pasado generó 13.4 millo­
nes de dólares en beneficio de la
economía de la ciudad, según informó Andrés Muñoz, vicepresidente
de mercadotecnia de San Antonio
Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, en
una breve presentación informó
que el rodeo del 2014 produjo
11.8 millones de dólares para la

Obama propone más fondos para combatir
adicción a narcóticos y medicamentos

Obama ha incluido una partida
de 133 millones de dólares en su
plan de presupuesto de 2016 para
combatir la creciente adicción a
narcóticos y medicamentos y prevenir las muertes por sobredosis,
un reto “complejo” pero “crucial”
para el país, indicó esta semana la
Casa Blanca.
“Casi todos los días alguien me
cuenta que ha perdido a un ser
querido por sobredosis, es desga­
rrador”, dijo el director interino
de la Oficina de Política Nacional
de Control de Droga de la Casa
Blanca, Michael Botticelli.
La adicción a opiáceos como la
heroína, y los medicamentos con
efecto narcótico como la morfina
y la oxicodona, han aumentado
“exponencialmente” en los últimos años, apuntó Botticelli, en
una rueda de prensa en la que
intervinieron funcionarios de
varias agencias que participarán
en la estrategia.
El director interino subrayó
que “se trata de un problema
nacional”.
Las muertes por sobredosis
de medicamentos con efecto
analgésico aumentaron casi un
300 por cien entre 1999 y 2011,
lo que llevó a los Centros de
Control de Enfermedades (CDC)
a considerar­lo una “epidemia”.
Las autoridades buscan mejorar
la divulgación de información a
los ciudadanos sobre los riesgos
de muerte por consumo excesivo
de estas sustancias y dar más
herramientas a los sanitarios para
evitar datos como los de 2013,

La estrategia propone también
mejorar los sistemas de alerta
y crear un sistema para que los
pacientes considerados de “altoriesgo” solo puedan obtener sus

farmacias.
Dentro de esta estrategia conjunta, el Centro de Operaciones
e Inteligencia contra el Crimen
Organizado del Departamento
de Justicia recibirá una partida de
1,8 millones de dólares para fortalecer las operaciones contra el
crimen organizado trasnacional.

La ansiedad causa daño mental y en la familia

El tema de este testimonio lo
dedicaré a la enfermedad de la ansiedad, la cual he padecido desde
pequeño y que descubrí por casualidad hace doce años, cuando
comencé a desarrollar malestares
de cabeza acompañado de mareos
y alucinaciones. Tras varios meses de estar sufriendo descontrol
físico mental tuve el “valor” de
comentárselo a mi esposa. Ella
de su botiquín sacó un frasco que
contenía pequeñas pastillas, me
dio una y me dijo que si seguía
sintiendo los mismos síntomas le
pidiera una dosis más. En pocas
horas ello me ayudó a calmarme.
El medicamento me convenció
para visitar a mi doctor, a quien
le expliqué sobre mi trastornada
situación y del medicamento que
mi esposa me había dado para
calmarme momentáneamente. El
doctor no hizo otra cosa más que
recetarme el mismo medicamento, indicándome que tomara un
par de pastillas a diario, dándome
una receta de 60 pastillas para un
mes. “Si hay buenos resultados
y logra restablecer su sistema
nervioso con este medicamento,
entonces usted estará tomándolo
de por vida”, me dijo el doctor.
Poco a poco fui dejando de
sentir mareos y dolores de cabeza.
Cuando asistía a lugares como
la oficina de correos ya no veía
a clien­tes frente de mi “moviéndose” de forma rara.
Lo mismo en la arena durante
mi cobertura en los partidos de los
Spurs, donde antes de comenzar
el tratamiento para controlar la
ansiedad, me daba pánico ver
miles de personas; ello me causaba a la vez sensaciones desesperantes, siempre estaba de mal
humor porque comenzaba a ver
y a sentir cosas que no existían
dentro del estadio.
El medicamento que mi esposa,
me dio y que el doctor continuo
recetándome fue el maravilloso
recurso que pudo lograr controlarme mentalmente. Lo malo
fue que durante el primer tratamiento me sobrepasé tomando
tres dosis por día. Cuando traté
de surtir el resto de la receta, el
boticario me dijo que mi póliza
de seguro médico no cubría su
parte hasta que se llegara la fecha correspondiente. O sea que
por haberme acelerado a tomar
medicamento en exceso, tendría
que esperar diez días para que la
receta volviese a ser efectiva en
su fecha de vencimiento.
Lo que tuve que hacer en los
siguientes días fue probarme a mí
mismo para ver qué tanto necesitaba dicho medicamento. Claro
que tuve recaída; sin embargo,
como castigo personal esperé
hasta la fecha en que ya podía
volver a la farmacia para que mi
receta fuera llenada. Desde ese
entonces me puse firme y no volví
a abusar sobre el consumo de mi
prescripción médica.
A los cinco años de haberla
tomado dos veces al día, decidí
solo por tomar una dosis diaria,
ello como prevención de caer en
dependencia del mismo medicamento.
El paso de los años me ha dado
madurez y pasividad conmigo
mismo, por los grandes cambios
en mi persona, para no crear dependencia en una droga controlada recetada por el doctor familiar
o por psiquiatras particulares.
A mi parecer y forma de ver
las cosas, en especial el amor que
le tengo a mi familia, mi trabajo
y quienes me rodean viene a ser
la herramienta que cada persona
con padecimientos de ansiedad y
estrés tiene.
El medicamento para control
de la ansiedad me ha dado esperanzas de seguir viviendo por el
lado que marca la ley. Nunca me
han dado reacciones violentas,
sino todo lo contrario, me sigue
ayudado bastante en el control
mi carácter. Cada día me hace
más apacible, si alguien llega a
ofenderme ni en caso lo tomó.
No busco revanchas o hacerle
daño a quienes me han ofendido o
defraudado. Aunque parezca mentira, les diré que de no haberme
atendido a tiempo, creo que la
ansiedad me hubiera conducido
a cometer costosos errores. Es
por ello que a quienes padecen
de ansiedad les recomiendo urgentemente visitar a su doctor
de cabecera o algún psiquiatra
experto en dicha enfermedad.
Nunca es tarde para chequearse
en el aspecto mental.
Como cierre de este testimonio
les comentaré que durante los 15
años que tengo de sobriedad y con
12 tomando a diario el medicamento para controlar la ansiedad,
he tenido la fortuna de ayudar a
varias personas que desconocían
padecerla.
En una ocasión el hijo de mi
vecino, quien padece diabetes,
se encontraba en silla de ruedas
tomando un poco de aire fresco
en su periodo de rehabilitación
tras haber sufrido amputación de
los dedos de su pie derecho. Se
encontraba en el patio y me llamó
para platicar.
“Mirá como me encuentro, sin
poder hacer nada, cada día me
siendo bastante deprimido y con
mucho estrés por la operación
que me hicieron. No he podido
trabajar y eso hace más difícil
mi existencia. He pensado en
quitarme la vida, ya no sirvo para
nada”, expresó el vecino.
Yo, por mi lado, le dije que la
ciencia médica tuvo que hacer
su trabajo al amputarle parte de
su pie derecho para evitar que la
infección consumiera más parte
del pie. Le recomendé que en
su próxi­ma visita al doctor le
sugiriera que le recetara medicamento para la ansiedad, y que ya
tomándolo pronto vería el favora­
ble cambio en su mentalidad. Le
expliqué que la depresión para
nada se compara con la ansiedad,
ambas enfermedades causan
males­tares cerebrales que se
pueden controlar con el medicamento co­rrecto. Sin embargo, la
ansiedad es la de mayor riesgo, ya
que incita a cometer daños físicos
e induce al suicidio o a cometer
daños a terceros.
A la semana de haber entablado
plática con el vecino, de casua­
lidad me tocó verlo caminando
por la calle rumbo a la tienda de
la esquina.
A su regreso a casa, lo fui a
visitar y de inmediato me dio las
gracias por la recomendación que
le había dado.
“Señor Franco, viera que bien
me ha caído el medicamento que
usted me recomendó, ya puedo
usar calzado normal. Estoy agradecido con usted de por vida.
Sobre todo que ya puedo trabajar
en mi profesión como pintor comercial”, afirmó mi recuperado
vecino.
Por otra parte, como mala
experiencia les contaré que a un
conocido beisbolista con quien
llevé buena relación deportiva, al
principios de mis años de haber
estado viendo los positivos resultados tomando medicamento para
control de ansiedad, le recomendé
ir a ver a su doctor para que le
recetara el mismo medicamento,
ya que él me había dicho estar
tomando pastillas para calmar
el estrés.
A mí parecer, ya como lo venía
observando pues no tomaba por
estar cumpliendo sentencia probatoria y un extenso programa
impuesto por el sistema del código penal de Texas, tan solo de
verlo fumarse un cigarro tras otro
fue que me atreví a invitarlo para
que se uniera al programa que yo
estaba llevando.
Mis consejos fueron en vano,
ya que al poco tiempo optó por
suicidarse, no sin antes haberse
despedido de todos sus familiares
y haberle pedido perdón a quienes
ofendió, entre ellos a su propia
mamá.
El caso de su muerte impactó a
un gran sector, ya que él gozaba
de popularidad por haberse des­
tacado en el rey de los deportes.

into a tear filled revelation that the

Our children are our most vulner-
able population. The revival of community health nursing in the form of
Nurse-Family Partnership shows
that when a positive intervention in
the life of a child, especially a child
at-risk, is made early in life, children
excel. Nurse-Family Partnership at
The Children’s Shelter pairs a firsttime, low-income mother with an
experienced registered nurse. The
visits happen from pregnancy until
the child becomes two years old. It
renders significant results.
When first-time mothers become
pregnant, it is critical to have access
to a safe environment, good health
practices, community support, and
quality resources to help them attain
their educational, economic, and
personal goals. Sometimes they just
need an advocate to help them get a
foothold in their new situation. Love
always needs a safe base, for mother,
for baby, and for fragile families.
I work with Nurse-Family Part-
nership, a program with The Children’s Shelter here in San Antonio.
We are a team of eight Nurse Home
Visitors implementing an evidencebased program with over 35 years
of research. Miracles happen every
day in efficient, supportive home
visitation programs across Texas,
where lives and dollars are saved on
a regular basis. Pairing a nurse with
a mother until her baby turns two
can save taxpayer dollars and provide support that can dramatically
change the trajectory of a child’s
life. Independent research from the
Rand Corporation demonstrates that

¿Cuáles son los retos que
enfrenta el adulto mayor al organizar y manejar el uso de sus
medicinas?
No puedo exagerar suficien­
temente lo importante que es
asegurar que los adultos mayo­
res manejen bien el uso de sus
medicinas.
Un régimen de medicación
bien organizado puede mejorar
enormemente la calidad de vida
y ayudar a mantener la independencia. Si se toman de la manera
incorrecta, las medicinas pueden
resultar en visitas caras a la sala
de emergencias, hospitalizaciones,
colocaciones en un asilo de adultos mayores y la muerte.
¿Cuántos medicamentos diferentes se toman normalmente
los adultos mayores?
Si usted ve los datos, más del 40
por ciento de las personas mayores
de 65 años se toman cinco o más
medicamentos, incluyendo las
medicinas y los suplementos sin
receta médica.
Estamos acostumbrados a la
idea de que los adultos mayores
tomen más pastillas cada día,
¿pero cuáles son los peligros
para la salud?
No siempre recetamos el mismo
tipo de medicamentos porque los
adultos mayores pueden tener

que hago con un paciente nuevo
que tiene una lista larga de medicamentos que se toma. Reviso todos sus medicamentos, los efectos
secundarios, los beneficios y las
interacciones. Trato de buscar la
manera de recetarle menos medicinas al paciente y aún tratar la
condición médica.
¿Cuáles son algunos consejos
que les ayudarán a los adultos
mayores a tomar sus medicamentos de una manera segura?
Muchos pacientes no tienen
idea por qué se están tomando
ciertos medicamentos. La verdad, lo más importante es saber
y estar informado. Estar al pendiente de las interacciones entre
medicamentos y asegurar que el
paciente sepa los posibles efectos
secundarios. No tenga miedo de
preguntarle al doctor sobre los
medicamentos que toma y por qué
se los recetaron. Es importante
limitar la cantidad de doctores que
ve, a menos que un especialista
forme una parte fundamental del
plan de tratamiento.
¿Qué puede hacer el farmacéutico para ayudarles a los
adultos mayores a manejar el
uso de medicamentos?
El farmacéutico es indispensa­
ble porque puede detectar interacciones entre medicamentos y
si un paciente está tomando una
dosis demasiado fuerte. Ellos
pueden darse cuenta a tiempo de
una posible interacción entre las
medicinas. El farmacéutico sirve
como otro sistema de control y
verificación, ayudándole al paciente con información educativa
sobre la medicación. También
les recomendamos a los pacientes
usar una sola farmacia.
¿Qué sistema de recordatorios puede ayudarles a los
adultos mayores que muestran
señales de confusión y falta de
memoria?
Asegúrese de que el paciente
sepa cómo tomarse sus medicamentos como se indique y cómo
guardarlos. Yo les recomiendo a
las personas que cuidan a estos
pacientes que vengan con ellos.
Siempre ayuda tener otro par
de oídos en el cuarto. Si tienen
problemas para recordar, los
pastilleros, expendedores y las
alarmas ayudan. Se pueden tomar
la medicina a la hora de comer,
cuando se cepillan los dientes o se
duermen. Sin embargo, lo mejor
es contar con una persona responsable que cuide del paciente
y tome la iniciativa de vigilar el
uso de los medicamentos.
¿Cuáles son los retos que
presentan las medicinas caras
y los problemas con el seguro
médico?
Para un médico no hay nada
más frustrante que ver a un paciente caer en el hospital porque
no tenía con qué pagar sus medicamentos. Algunos pacientes con
ingresos fijos tienen que escoger
entre comer y tomar sus medicamentos. Los inhaladores pueden
costar cientos de dólares y no
hay genéricos. Medicare Parte D
les reparte a los adultos mayores
cierta cantidad de dinero para sus
recetas médicas del año entero.
Normalmente al final del año
hay un intervalo en la cobertura
conocido como el período sin
cobertura.
Hay recursos para ayudarles a
los pacientes a lidiar con el costo
de los medicamentos. Tratamos de recetar medicamentos
económicos y hacemos todo lo

Association 2014 Alzheimer’s
Disease Facts and Figures Report, a
woman’s estimated lifetime risk of
developing Alzheimer’s at age 65
is 1 in 6, compared with nearly 1 in
11 for a man. As real a concern as
breast cancer is to women’s health,
women in their 60s are about twice
as likely to develop Alzheimer’s
over the rest of their lives as they
are to develop breast cancer.
“Two-thirds of the 5 million
seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease
are women. These are our grandmothers, mothers, aunts, friends,
co-workers and even us. The San
Antonio community must come
together to fight this epidemic”

Adding to women’s Alzheimer’s
burden, there are 2.5 times as many
women than men providing intensive “on-duty” care 24 hours for
someone living with Alzheimer’s
disease. Among caregivers who
feel isolated, women are much more
likely than men to link isolation
with feeling depressed (17 percent
of women vs. 2 percent of men).
The strain of caring for someone
with Alzheimer’s is also felt in the
workplace. Among caregivers who
have been employed while they
were also caregiving:
• 20 percent of women vs. 3
percent of men went from working
full-time to working part-time while
acting as a caregiver.
• 18 percent of women vs. 11 percent of men took a leave of absence
• 11 percent of women vs. 5 percent of men gave up work entirely
• 10 percent of women vs. 5 percent of men lost job benefits
Human and financial toll of
Alzheimer’s
There are more than 5 million
Americans living with Alzheimer’s
disease, including 330,000 here
in Texas, but Alzheimer’s has far
reaching effects that can plague
entire families. There are 1,302,000
Alzheimer’s caregivers in Texas
providing 1,482,000 hours of unpaid care valued at $18,457,000.
The total national cost of caring for people with Alzheimer’s
and other dementias is projected
to reach $214 billion this year. In
2014, the cost to Medicare and
Medicaid of caring for those with
Alzheimer’s and other dementias
will reach a combined $150 billion
with Medicare spending nearly
$1 in every $5 on people with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.
These numbers are set to soar
as the baby boomers continue to
enter the age of greatest risk for
Alzheimer’s disease. Unless something is done to change the course of
the disease, there could be as many
as 16 million Americans living
with Alzheimer’s in 2050, at a cost
of $1.2 trillion (in current dollars)
to the nation. This dramatic rise
includes a 500 percent increase in
combined Medicare and Medicaid
spending and a 400 percent increase
in out-of-pocket spending. The
country’s first-ever National Plan
to Address Alzheimer’s Disease has
a goal of preventing and effectively
treating Alzheimer’s disease by
2025. Ensuring strong implementation of the National Alzheimer’s
Plan, including adequately funding
Alzheimer’s research, is the best
way to avoid these staggering human and financial tolls.
Lack of understanding of the
disease
Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth
leading cause of death in the United
States, yet it is still widely misunderstood and underreported. Nearly
a quarter (24 percent) of both men
and women agree with the mistaken
belief that Alzheimer’s must run in
their family for them to be at risk.
When looking at certain ethnic
groups, these numbers were even
higher. A third of Latinos (33 percent) and almost half of Asians (45
percent) agreed with that incorrect
statement.
In 2010, the Alzheimer’s Association in partnership with Maria
Shriver and The Shriver Report
conducted a groundbreaking poll
with the goal of exploring the
compelling connection between Alzheimer’s disease and women. Data
from that poll were published in The
Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation
Takes on Alzheimer’s, which also
included essays and reflections that
gave personal perspectives to the
poll’s numbers. For the first time,
that report revealed not only the
striking impact of the disease on
individual lives, but also its especially strong effects on women —
women living with the disease, as
well as women who are caregivers,
relatives, friends and loved ones of
those directly affected.
Realizing the impact Alzheimer’s
has on women – and the impact
women can have when they work
together – the Alzheimer’s Association has launched a national
initiative to highlight the power
of women in the fight against this

Westbrook, all what seem to be
MVP candidates for the NBA.
But what if there was one more
in the running that were not
named Kevin Durant or Lebron
James? What if I said, Kawhi
Leonard?
Yes, he’s been out for a
majority of the first-half of the
season but, when he has played,
he has been almost unstoppable. It’s clear and evident
that Leonard is the last puzzle
piece to the General Manager
R.C. Buford and Coach Gregg
Popovich’s masterpiece.
Although Leonard has been
battling a difficult eye injury,
he has given 100 percent to this
team. Whether it’s been moral
or physical support, he’s been
there. With the future bright as
the annual Rodeo Road Trip
approaches, it’s become clear
that Leonard will not sit out as
many games as he has so far.
As any Spurs or basketball
fan knows, the NBA season
is just starting for the reining
champions. “Training Camp” is
over, and this is when everyone
steps up. For Leonard, he’s still
playing like an underdog no
matter what part of the season
or who the opponent is, he is
still playing to prove himself.
This season, the Spurs have a
record of 9-9 without Leonard
in the lineup. When he is in, the
Spurs are just as dominant as
the top NBA teams right now
with a record of 22-9. Although
with the help of guard Patty
Mills’ return and Marco Bellineli, Leonard gives the Spurs
the spark they need.
Although averaging just 15
points and seven rebounds a
game, his stats don’t tell the
whole story. He is more than
just about scoring points, if he
was, he would be averaging
more than double his current
average, making Russell Westbrook look like a high school
player. And unlike Westbrook,
he actually passes and plays allaround ball with his teammates.
Some games, Leonard will
finish with double-digit numbers in the assist column, and
he’s not even a point guard.
Whereas Westbrook, being a
point guard should have at least
10 assists a game to play his
position right, but instead, he
finishes with 45 points with just
six assists. Cool, even though
seeing that number in the points
column, playing like that has
given you how many championships again? Yeah, the big
goose egg, learn from Leonard
and help give your man Kevin
Durant a championship. He
deserves one.
Leonard is the prime example
of how to be successful in
this league. As my unofficial

los Spurs de San Antonio se
convirtieron en pentacampeones
de la NBA.
Y ahora, en ahora en su ruta a la
conquista de su sexto campeonato,
el equipo está teniendo los mismos
resultados, lo que le ha venido
dando reconocimiento entre los
demás conjuntos asociados a la
Conferencia del Oeste en la cual
militan, así como en la Conferencia
del Este.
El cuadro suplente (banca) de
cada equipo tiene la finalidad

The Texas Winter League and
San Antonio Missions renewed
their partnership for the 2015 season. Roughly 20 games, including
playoffs and the championship
game, will be held at Nelson Wolff
Stadium, home of the San Antonio
Missions.
The 2013 TWL season hosted
60 players, who traveled from
across the country and overseas to
participate in league play. Over 75
percent of the players were signed
to professional contracts, capped by
the Arizona Diamondbacks selecting LHP Henry Garcia.
Last season’s TWL attracted 100
players, 62 of which were signed.
Instructors and mentors for the
Texas Winter League include various coaches and scouts.
The aspiring baseball professionals include players rehabilitating
from injury, released from clubs,
or rookies eager to sign their first
pro contract.
“We are very excited to be hosting the Texas Winter League again
and showcasing our Missions Baseball Academy, as well as giving
young players a chance to achieve
a lifelong dream of signing a professional baseball contract,” said San
Antonio Missions' President Burl
Yarbrough.
In two years, over 150 players
have signed contracts outside of the
Texas Winter and Summer Leagues.
League representatives present
include those from the American Association, Frontier League,
United League, Can-Am League,

and scouts from MLB teams the
Diamondbacks, Marlins, Phillies,
Orioles, and Rays.
The Texas Winter League was
founded in 2012 and hosts a competition of 6 teams.
The season began at the start of

UTSA welcomes biggest recruitment class to date

Countless letters of intent were
inked on Wednesday for UTSA –
a vast talent pool of players eager
to adorn the blue and orange for
the program’s fifth season.
The Roadrunners’ third season
in Conference USA saw the largest recruitment class in program’s
history, composed of 37 student
athletes – three of which were San
Antonio high-school standouts.
The class holds a near-even
split between total offense (19)
and defense (18). Offense signed
six receivers, six offensive linemen, four running backs, two
quarterbacks and a tight end.
Defense secured nine linemen,
eight defensive backs, and one
linebacker.
“We feel like we addressed
offense and defense, got some
quality in both areas,” coach
Larry Coker said in regards to the
commitments.
The Roadrunners are reeling
from a disappointing 4-8 overall record last season, and were
forced to fill in the gaps after
losing 36 seniors from last year’s
team.

“There’s some game breakers
there,” Coker said. “We’ve got
definitely some size advantages
that we haven’t had before, and
it’s just an exciting group.”
Although one cannot predict
the impact the recruits will have
on the team, the following is a
brief analysis of potential standout players from the recruiting
class.
Dannon Cavil (Wide Receiver)
Player’s profile: Cavil played
for Madison High School, before
signing to the University of Oklahoma. After an unsuccessful stint
– in which he was a redshirt freshman and reportedly struggled
academically – Cavil returned to
San Antonio. As a high school
senior, he recorded 33 catches for
720 yards and seven TDs.
Coach Coker’s take: “We think
we have a good one in Dannon.
He’s got size, 6’4”, 215. We’ve
got really some small guys that
are very quick and fast, Dannon
is that big guy and he’s going to
be a good one.”
Peyton Hall (Wide Receiver)
Player’s profile: After losing
starting wide receivers Kam Jones
and Marcellus Mack, Hall has a
likely chance of seeing playing
time as a freshman. During his

senior season with Brandeis, Hall
nabbed 55 receptions for 1,339
yards and scored 12 touchdowns.
He was a clutch presence in the
playoffs, securing 19 passes
for 458 yards and scoring three
touchdowns in four games. Hall
won 34 victories and three consecutive district championships.
Coach Coker’s take: “He’s an
exciting wide receiver, very difficult to cover. We’re excited to
have him.”
Manny Harris (Quarterback)
Player’s profile: Due to numerous health issues, The Roadrunners spun through a revolving
door of quarterbacks last season.
The lack of consistency caused
the offense to struggle, and played
a crucial part in the teams failings
last season. The quarterback job
seems to be anybody’s job, and
Harris has a chance at competing
for the starting position. Harris is
one of the most decorated players
in Copperas Cove High School
history. During his senior season,
he threw for 1,723 yards and 13
touchdowns. He was honored as
the areas MVP by the Killeen
Daily Herald for two consecutive years.
Coach Coker’s take: “Manny
Harris, an interesting story, from
the Killeen, Texas-area and the
same high school that RG3 played
at, and he broke all of RG3’s
records as a junior, and just a
fantastic prospect.”
Halen Steward (Fullback)
Player’s profile: A Floridatransplant, Steward played both
running back and linebacker
during his high school career, and
will serve as a fullback for UTSA.
At 5-foot-10, 255 pounds, he
brings tremendous size to the position. Steward finished his senior
season with 193 yards and five
rushing touchdowns, along with
68 tackles and one interception.
Coach Coker’s take: “He’s an
outstanding young man...he’s
going to be a really good player
for us because we play with a

basketball expert father would
say, “Leonard plays the game
like basketball legend Michael
Jordan.” He plays like him not
by copying his every move
Spurs...
(cough-cough, Kobe Bryant),
but by making everyone on his
team better, giving them a boost
in the confidence department.
Spurs super fans rejoice,
fullback, and we haven’t had that
type guy since Okotcha left, and
he’s going to be a good addition
for us.”
Vontrell King-Williams (Defensive Tackle)
Player’s profile: King-Williams
was a heavily recruited junior
college transfer. In nine games
of action as a sophomore, KingWilliams registered 39 tackles,
2.5 TFLs and 1.5 sacks.
Coach Coker’s take: “He’s
what they’re supposed to look
like. Great young man, just been
very impressed with him, his
work habits, how he’s gravitated
to the players and just kind of enjoying being here, and he’s going
to be outstanding.”
All in all, it was the most successful National Signing Day for
the Roadrunners.
“We’re going to recruit the very
best we can,” Coker said. “We’ve
got great relationships with the
coaches here, and I think we do
that, we’ll be just fine.”
Leonard is back and looking
as dominant as ever. The real
season has begun and it looks
like we’re back in “The Race
for Seís.”

bring together Major League

leader and all-time hits leader
for the first time in almost 30
years.
The “Kings of the Diamond”
dinner, featuring Nolan Ryan
and Pete Rose, takes place on
Thursday, March 19 (7PM), at
the Marriott Plaza San Antonio. The event, presented by
Thomas J. Henry, will benefit
ChildSafe.
The dinner follows last year’s
highly regarded “Hall of Fame”
luncheon that included Ryan,
Lou Brock and Gaylord Perry.
“We received some really good
feedback on the format of last
year’s event,” Ryan Sanders
CEO Reese Ryan said. “It’s
a truly unique event where
people will get the opportunity
to listen in on a personal conversation between two baseball
legends.”
Former San Antonio Express-News columnist and senior writer Richard Oliver will
once again serve as moderator.
The event kicks off the H-EB Big League Weekend 2015,
a two-game Major League
Baseball exhibition hosted

Tigres UANL otorgó becas La U es la monarca invicta

Con la presencia del primer
equipo y las palabras de aliento
del director técnico, Ricardo
Ferretti, 300 alumnos de la
Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo
León (UANL) recibieron becas de
sostenimiento y 10 más tendrán
su casa mejorada.
Luego de casi un año de
trabajo del Club Tigres y de sus
principales aliados comerciales,
además del impulso de la afición,
el futbol logró un instrumento de
inclusión y transformación social
gracias al programa “Tigres por
un Mejor Futuro”. El programa
ha cosechado grandes frutos que
superaron las expectativas, tanto
en el alcance como en tiempo de
entrega.
En 11 meses, la iniciativa,
presentada en febrero de 2014
y que apoya a la educación
y calidad de vida, dos áreas
importantes para el desarrollo
de la comunidad, ha logrado
financiar la beca de sostenimiento
de 300 jóvenes brillantes en
situación de riesgo.
Todos ellos, a través de la
Fundación UANL, tendrán
la oportunidad de realizar su
sueño de ser profesionistas,
algunos de ellos son el primer
egresado universitario de su
familia. Además, “Tigres por
un Mejor Futuro”, una iniciativa
sin precedente en el fútbol
mexicano, logró que 10 viviendas
de estudiantes fueran mejoradas,
con lo que no solo los alumnos,
sino también sus familias, la
base sobre la que se construye
una sociedad sólida y con futuro,
verán y vivirán el esfuerzo
conjunto de Tigres, la UANL, la
comunidad y las empresas.
“La conciencia de lo que sucede
en nuestro mundo nos obliga a
actuar en concordancia con lo que
significa ser Tigres de la UANL”,
expresó Alejandro Rodríguez
Miechielsen, presidente de Club
Tigres en el auditorio Gumersindo
Cantú Hinojosa.
“Todos coincidimos en que no
podemos permitir que un alumno
con la ilusión y la disciplina de
llegar a tener un título profesional
vea frustrado su sueño por la falta
de recursos económicos”.
La estudiante de segundo
semestre de Derecho Magda Nelly
Luna Valadez fue la encargada de
ofrecer un mensaje a nombre de
todos sus compañeros.
“La palabra gracias es tan corta
que no me alcanza para expresar
el alivio y la alegría que sentimos
mi familia y yo de recibir la buena
noticia de que sería beneficiada
por el programa del Club Tigres, y
la UANL y sus empresas aliadas”,
expresó la estudiante de 23 años.
De los 300 becados, 15
muchachos pertenecen a las
Fuerzas Básicas de Tigres. Ellos
han sido becados para estudiar
preparatoria en la UANL, al
mismo tiempo que se preparan
para convertirse en las futuras
estrellas de nuestro deporte.
Ellos, junto con el resto de los
becados, son quienes demostrarán
que la garra y la pasión de ser
Tigres es fuente de inspiración
para lograr grandes cosas, para
alcanzar grandes oportunidades y
para trabajar por un mejor futuro.
El orador invitado, Ricardo
Ferretti, dedicó también un mensaje
a los becados después de pedirles
a los jugadores que se relajaran,
que en está ocasión no hablaría
con ellos. “Me toca hablar de lo
más fácil y me encanta. Me toca
la parte de felicitarlos, de decirles
que son afortunados. Que cada
día que despierten, se persignen
y se entreguen para lograr ese
sueño. Es un placer felicitarlos”,
dijo el director técnico campeón
con Tigres.
La beca de “Tigres por un
Mejor Futuro” proveerá a los
estudiantes del apoyo durante toda
su carrera y preparatoria. Las casas

de los estudiantes.

honrar equipo profesional Tigres de
la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo
León (UANL), recientemente en
gran final contra Laguneras (con
marcador de 2-0) se coronó de forma
invicta en 14 partidos celebrados
en lo que fue la temporada 2014
de Liga Femenil Ejecutiva de San
Antonio (LFESA).
Por esta hazaña todo el equipo
recibió felicitaciones del director y
fundador señor Armando S. Núñez,
quien ha sabido llevar por el sendero
del éxito el circuito femenil de
LFESA.
La U, bajo la dirección técnica
del popular futbolista Javier Carrillo

San Antonian named new
director of the Alamo

Commissioner George P. Bush
on Wednesday announced that
Rebecca Bridges Dinnin of San
Antonio has been appointed Director of the Alamo, a new senior-level
position in the Texas General Land
Office (GLO).
“I am proud to welcome Becky
to this important position within
the Texas General Land Office –
one that is meaningful not just for
the GLO, but for all who hold the
Alamo sacred,” Bush said. “As
director, Becky will be responsible
for the strategic leadership of the
Alamo and I believe her expertise in
communications, capital fundraising, tourism promotion and management will serve her well in this
exciting and challenging new role.”
Dinnin comes to the position
after more than seven years with
the Greater San Antonio Chamber
of Commerce, where she has served
as the chamber’s Vice President
of Image and Communications.
Earlier roles include several years
as Director of Communications for
the Baptist General Convention of
Texas. She earned an MBA from
Southern Methodist University
and has an undergraduate degree in
journalism from Baylor University.

The City of San Antonio’s 311
Call Center debuted its Twitter
account last week, adding an
option for San Antonio residents
to engage with the City of San
Antonio, report issues in the
community and receive up-todate information regarding City
services.
Through Twitter, residents can

Además, los inmigrantes cuyos
permisos de trabajo caduquen
no podrán renovarlos sin pasar
primero por un juez, como es
el caso de Luis Reynaga, un
jalisciense de 33 años que llegó
indocumentado a Los Ángeles
en el 2000 y cuyo permiso de
trabajo caduca a finales de
2015.
Hace dos años, Reynaga fue
detenido por la policía por el
impago de una multa de tráfico
y por conducir sin carné.
"Me detuvieron y me llevaron
con migración", explicó a
Efe el hombre que tuvo que
ingeniárselas para pagar una
fianza de diez mil dólares y
salir en libertad.
Apenas unos meses después,
se personó ante un magistrado
que le concedió el plazo de un
año para arreglar su situación
migratoria antes de ejecutar
una orden de deportación.

amenazas de muerte de su mujer,
se apresuró a solicitar una visa
por violencia doméstica para
frenar la deportación.
La decisión final del juez
estaba prevista para enero de
2015, pero Reynaga recibió
una carta informando de que
la audiencia quedaba retrasada.
"Me siento muy mal porque
soy padre soltero de tres hijos",
se lamentó el mexicano.
"Quiero vivir sin miedo de
nada, necesito mi permiso
de trabajo, y quiero poder ir
a visitar a mi papá que está
muy viejo y enfermo", agregó
suplicando el inmigrante que,
como miles más, se queda,
nuevamente, en el limbo.
La organización El Rescate
tiene en este momento más
de 280 casos que podrían
sufrir retrasos y cancelaciones
judiciales y, según anticipó su
director ejecutivo, todo apunta
a que se verán afectados.
"Somos testigos de que
esto es una crisis, y por
eso hay que abordarla con
seriedad y no con política",
manifestó Sanabria, quien
agregó que "el sistema requiere
una reforma migratoria,
una reestructuración, una
reingeniería".

Insulza, celebró el anuncio de El
Vaticano sobre la beatificación de
monseñor Oscar Arnulfo Romero, el
arzobispo de San Salvador asesinado

Archbishop to deliver lecture at St. Mary’s

the Galilean and Pope Francis’
Contribution to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition” on
Wednesday, Feb. 11.
The 7 p.m. event, open to the
public and media, will be held at
St. Mary’s University in Conference Room A of the University
Center. Refreshments and conversation follow the lecture.
As part of the 12th annual
Catholic Intellectual Tradition
Lecture Series, Archbishop
Gustavo will explore the Galilean context of Jesus’ life and
ministry and its relevance for
Pope Francis’ ministry of evan-
gelization.
This is grounded in the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in
the Church, in the world, in the
lives of Christians and especially at St. Mary’s University. It
is not enough merely to marvel
at and talk about Pope Francis’
creative and ecumenical leadership, he says. With the guidance
and empowerment of the Holy
Spirit, every Christian is challenged to share responsibility
for continuing Jesus’ mission
and ministry today.
The Catholic Intellectual Tradition Lecture Series is a free,
annual series featuring men and
women who have shaped the
Catholic intellectual tradition
at the heart of the educational
enterprises at St. Mary’s. The
2014-15 series theme is “Faith

‘Francis Effect’ more than sound
bites, but serious food for thought

“The Francis Effect” is far more
than a mere collection of mediafriendly sound bites. The signature
papal remarks that have captured
headlines worldwide over the past
two years are serious food for thought
about what kind of a community
Pope Francis believes the Catholic
Church is being called to be, said a
priest who has watched the pontiff
up close.
Father Tom Rosica, CSB, CEO of
Salt and Light Television in Canada,
was a spokesman for the Holy See
during the 2013 transition between
the pontificates of Pope Benedict
XVI and Pope Francis. He provided
a wealth of insight about the mind
and heart of Pope Francis during
the annual De Mazenod Conference
sponsored by the Oblate Missionary Partnership Jan. 30-Feb. 1 at
the Oblate Renewal Center in San
Antonio. About 75 people from all
over the United States participated in
the conference, many of whom who
work in Catholic ministries.
Without question, Pope Francis
has demonstrated an unusual ability
to grab the world’s attention with
such comments as “How I would
like a church that is poor and for the
poor;” “Priests must be shepherds
with the smell of the sheep;” “The
Lord has redeemed all of us -- all
of us, even the atheists;” “We have
fallen into a globalization of indifference;” “Who am I to judge?;”
“I see the church as a field hospital
after battle;” “I prefer a church that
is bruised, hurting and dirty because
it has been out on the streets rather
than a church that is unhealthy from
being confined and clinging to its
own security;” “Mercy is the greatest
of all virtues;” and “An evangelized
must never look like someone who
has just come back from a funeral.”
Father Rosica asked rhetorically,
“Is it any wonder that the whole
world is listening to this man? He is
speaking our language. The heart and
soul, the spirituality, of Jorge Mario
Bergoglio is about human faces: the
face of Christ; the face of St. Francis
of Assisi; of St. Joseph; and of Mary,
Mother of the Lord.”
He said that when the former
archbishop of Buenos Aires offers
a self-portrait, he sees himself as
standing under the gaze of Christ,
saying, ‘I am a sinner whom the Lord
has looked upon’ and referring to the
Caravaggio painting ‘The Calling
of St. Matthew,’ which he often has
pondered while visiting the Church
of San Luigi Dei Francesi (St. Louis
of the French) in Rome.”
The priest recalled that in an ad-
dress to the International Federation
of Catholic Medical Associations in
which the pontiff condemned abortion and euthanasia, but did so by
appealing to the face of Christ rather
than the customary arguments. “Each
of us is invited to recognize in the
fragile human being the face of the
Lord, who in his human flesh experienced the indifference and loneliness to which we often condemn the
poorest,” the pontiff said. He also
compared and aborted child with
the infant Jesus, marked for death by
King Herod even before he was born:
“Each child who is unborn but is unjustly condemned to be aborted bears
the face of Christ, who even before he
was born, and then as soon as he was
born, experienced the rejection of the
world.” In the same manner, Father
Rosica said, the pope’s condemnation
of euthanasia pointed to the face of
Christ present in the elderly targeted
for elimination.
He pointed to Pope Francis’
episcopal motto, which in 2013
became his pontifical motto; Miserando atque Eligendo (“By Showing
Mercy, By Choosing Him”). Taken
from St. Bede’s commentary on
the calling of Matthew, it expresses
Jesus’ whole approach to people,
Father Rosica said -- “having mercy
on others and inviting them to
follow him. These are the bare essentials of the Christian faith.” He
suggested that the pope's use of the
image of Christ in his rhetoric “is
an unvarnished call for the church
and for every Christian to undergo
reform by standing under the gaze
of Christ. In the transforming light
of that face, the rest will follow.”
However, Father Rosica suggested another reason the world
may stop and listen to Pope Francis.
“Why is this man so disturbing to
our consciences, our minds, and
our hearts? While so many love being in his presence, many more are
left very uncomfortable when they
realize what he is asking of us,” the
priest asserted, adding: “Francis is
speaking powerfully to each of us
about how we let patterns of materialism activate our lives and distort
our humanity. He disarmingly
makes us deeply uncomfortable in
a way that allows us to recognize
and confront the alienation from
our own humanity that occurs when
we seek happiness in objects rather
than in relationships with God and
with others.”
The priest recalled Pope Francis’
incisive commentary at Lampedusa, off the coast of Sicily, when
he challenged the world to reflect
on “the culture of comfort, which
makes us think only of ourselves,
makes us insensitive to the cries of
other people, makes us live in soap
bubbles which, however lovely, are
insubstantial; they offer a fleeting
and empty illusion which results
in indifference to others. Indeed, it
even leads to the globalization of indifference. In this globalized world,
we have globalized indifference. We
have become used to the sufferings
of others, (thinking) “it doesn’t affect me; it doesn't concern me; it’s
none of my business.’”
Father Rosica asserted that Pope
Francis’ unusual credibility on
economic justice matters derives
not from his origins but from his
lifestyle choices in favor of simplicity and humility. “Just look at
the symbols he gave us from the
beginning of his Petrine ministry,”
the priest commented. “This is a
pope who rejected a papal limo to
take a bus with the other cardinals
after his election, who wears the
same black shoes he wore in Argentina, and who turned down the
papal apartment in favor of a modest
room in a Vatican guest house. He
loves being with people and refused
to live in a golden birdcage. When
Francis speaks of ‘a poor church
for the poor,’ people take him seriously. His approval ratings around
the world are the envy of politicians
and celebrities.”
The pope’s statements on the
need for ethics in economic life are
neither conservative nor liberal, the
priest asserted; they’re Catholic. He
calls for a church of the poor and for
the poor that is out on the streets,
not turned in on itself. He has lived
the church’s social teachings in his
own ministry, so he speaks bluntly
and confidently on its demands.
Pope Francis has warned of three
temptations of the church: To turn
the Gospel message into an ideology, to run the church like a business (functionalism), and clericalism. The first attempts to interpret
the Gospel apart from the church
or even from the Gospel itself, and
through the lens of social science. It

grande su fascinación que él se

Pasados los años, se queda
casi ciego, y el único color que
distingue es el amarillo. El primer
color que recuerda haber visto es
el amarillo, que es el del pelaje
del tigre, y ahora será también el
último que vea.
En Nueva York —dice
Borges—, los taxis amarillos
están pintados de amarillo porque
es el color que mejor se distingue.
En Canadá se ha constatado
mediante experimentos que bajo
ciertas condiciones en que no
se ven los autos rojos, todavía
se distinguen los amarillos. Y a
eso se debe que en Buenos Aires
los techos de todos los taxis sean
amarillos.
Esas reflexiones del
renombrado poeta argentino
debieran hacernos reflexionar a
nosotros. Si les sumamos a ellas
el hecho de que los colores que no
distinguen bien los daltonianos
son el verde y el rojo, mientras
que el amarillo sí lo distinguen
con claridad, ¿por qué será que
el amarillo es el color de la señal
de advertencia de peligro en vez
de la señal de echar a andar o de
detenerse? ¿No sería más lógico
que en los semáforos en todo
el mundo el color más visible,
el amarillo, indicara “¡Alto!
¡Deténgase!” en vez del rojo?
¿Acaso no es más importante
la función de detenerse que una
advertencia?
Tal vez la respuesta a esa
incógnita sea que cuando se
acatan las advertencias, se salva
la vida.
Las advertencias nos dan
tiempo para reaccionar, para
ponernos a salvo sin tener que
frenar en seco. Sin duda, a eso se
debe que la Biblia, el manual de
conducción del ser humano, esté
llena de advertencias para cada
uno de nosotros.
Hay advertencias contra el
engaño, contra la insensatez y
el rechazo a la sabiduría, contra
el adulterio, contra la idolatría,
contra la opresión del pobre,
contra la incredulidad; y hay
advertencias de que no se rechace
a Dios sino que se le preste
atención a su voz.
“Es necesario que prestemos
más atención a lo que hemos
oído —nos advierte el escritor
a los hebreos—.... Si ustedes
oyen hoy su voz, no endurezcan
el corazón como sucedió en la
rebelión.... Porque si... toda
transgresión y desobediencia recibió
su justo castigo, ¿cómo escaparemos
nosotros si descuidamos una
salvación tan grande?”.
En vez de ser insensatos y
rechazar la sabiduría, seamos
sabios y acatemos esas advertencias
divinas. Dios quiere que vayamos al
cielo, color verde, y no al infierno,
color rojo. Por eso nos ha dado tantas
advertencias claras, color amarillo.
Hagámosle caso. Así viviremos
tranquilos, sosegados y sin temor del
mal, como nos lo ha prometido.

Gospel with the eyes of a disciple.
The attempt to psychologize is
individualistic and involves ‘an
elitist hermeneutics that ultimately
reduces the encounter with Jesus
and its development to a process of
growing self-awareness,’” according to the pontiff, Father Rosica
said.
The Holy Father believes that
functionalism has the effect of
paralyzing the church, meaning that
it becomes “concerned with fixing
potholes in the road” more than
with the road itself -- a temptation
of church bureaucrats. “It reduces
the reality of the church to the
structure of a non-governmental
organization (NGO). What counts
are quantifiable results and statistics.” Francis, he explained, “does
not want the church to end up being
run by any other business.”
Although clericalism is a temptation particularly for bishops and
priests, “Francis argues that the
laity are complicit. ‘The priest
clericalizes the layperson, and the
layperson kindly asks to be clericalized because, deep down, it is easier. Liberal clericalism can disdain
popular piety, while conservative
clericalism fears giving the laity
a greater role in the church,” the
priest explained. While these originally were presented as temptations
for the Latin American Church,
“it’s obvious that they are alive and
well in Rome and North America,”
Father Rosica commented.
Where does Pope Francis want
to lead the church? Father Rosica
offered a variety of images to illustrate the Holy Father's vision of the
Catholic Church: as reconciler, as a
church of the heart, as a church with
a simple message and as “the church
of Emmaus.” He noted that Francis
himself has been called “a tweetable
pope made for 140 characters,” and
a French journalist has referred to
him as a “defibrillator pope.”

PERMISO DEL SISTEMA DE ELIMINACION DE DESCARGAS DE CONTAMINANTES DE TEXAS (TPDES) PARA AGUAS RESIDUALES INDUSTRIALES

PERMISO NO. WQ 0004437000
SOLICITUD Y DECISIÓN PRELIMINAR. San Antonio Water System, 2800 U.S.
Highway 281 North, San Antonio, Texas 78212, que opera una planta de tratamiento
de agua de ultrafiltración y, una planta de tratamiento de agua potable, ha aplicado a la
Comisión de Calidad Ambiental del Estado de Texas (TCEQ por sus siglas en inglés)
para la renovación del permiso No. WQ0004437000 para la descarga de contaminantes
del sistema de eliminación (TPDES por sus siglas en inglés), que autoriza la descarga del
clarificador agua en un intermitente y variable flujo por el desagüe 001. La TCEQ recibió
esta solicitud el 21 de agosto 2014.
La instalaciones se encuentra en 6725 calle Moreno, aproximadamente 1.6 millas noroeste de la intersección de interestatal carretera 35 y lazo 410, sudoeste de la ciudad de San
Antonio, condado de Bexar, Texas 78073.
El Director Ejecutivo del TCEQ ha completado la revisión técnica de la solicitud y ha
preparado un borrador del permiso. El borrador del permiso, si es aprobado, establecería
las condiciones bajo las cuales la facilidad debe operar. El Director Ejecutivo ha tomado
una decisión preliminar que si este permiso es emitido, cumple con todos los requisitos

nosotros] solicito/solicitamos un/a audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso". Si

que representa al grupo para recibir correspondencia en el futuro; debe identificar
un miembro del grupo que sería afectado adversamente por la facilidad o la actividad
propuesta; debe proveer la información ya indicada anteriormente con respecto a la
ubicación del miembro afectado y la distancia de la facilidad o actividad propuesta;
debe explicar como y porqué el miembro sería afectado y como los intereses que el
grupo desea proteger son pertinentes al propósito del grupo.
Después del cierre de los períodos para los pedidos y comentarios, el Director Ejecutivo
enviará la solicitud y los pedidos para reconsideración o por una audiencia administrativa
de lo contenciosos a los Comisionados de la TCEQ para su consideración en una reunión
programada de la Comisión. La Comisión otorgará solamente una audiencia administrativa
de lo contencioso sobre los hechos reales disputados del caso que son pertinentes y esenciales
para la decisión de la Comisión sobre la solicitud. Además, la Comisión sólo otorgará una
audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso sobre los asuntos que fueron presentados antes
del plazo de vencimiento y que no fueron retirados posteriormente. La TCEQ puede actuar
sobre una solicitud para renovar un permiso para descargar aguas residuales sin proveer
una oportunidad de una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso.
ACCIÓN DEL DIRECTOR EJECUTIVO. El Director Ejecutivo puede emitir una
aprobación final de la solicitud a menos que exista un pedido antes del plazo de vencimiento de una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso o se ha presentado un pedido
de reconsideración. Si un pedido ha llegado antes del plazo de vencimiento de la audiencia
o el pedido de reconsideración ha sido presentado, el Director Ejecutivo no emitirá una
aprobación final sobre el permiso y enviará la solicitud y el pedido a los Comisionados de
la TECQ para consideración en una reunión programada de la Comisión.
LISTA DE CORREO. Si somete comentarios públicos, un pedido para una audiencia
administrativa de lo contencioso o una reconsideración de la decisión del Director Ejecutivo, la Oficina del Secretario Principal enviará por correo los avisos públicos en relación
con la solicitud. Además, puede pedir que la TCEQ ponga su nombre en una o más de
las listas correos siguientes (1) la lista de correo permanente para recibir los avisos del
solicitante indicado por nombre y número del permiso específico y/o (2) la lista de correo
de todas las solicitudes en un condado especifico. Si desea que se agrega su nombre en una
de las listas designe cual lista(s) y envía por correo su pedido a la Oficina del Secretario
Principal de la TCEQ.

El alero estelar de los Spurs,
Kawhi Leonard, quien resultara
elegido como el Jugador Más Valioso (MVP) en la gran final del 2014
en la NBA contra el equipo Heat de
Miami, ha venido cumpliendo con
diversas actividades comunitarias
en las que dignamente ha representado a la franquicia Silver & Black.
Leonard, de 24 años de edad y
nativo de Los Ángeles (California),
se encuentra jugando su cuarta
temporada en la NBA donde tiene
marca personal de 15.3 puntos
anotados por partido. Además se
encuentra viviendo inolvidables
momentos en su brillante carrera,
la cual ha venido puliendo bajo la
dirección del entrenador en jefe
Gregg Popovich.
Como parámetro en su ocupada
agenda, el astro californiano recientemente visitó a pacientes y
sus familiares que –sin ningún
costo– se hospedan en el hogar
conocido por Ronald McDonald
House, ubicado en el domicilio
4803 Sid Katz en el corazón del
Centro Médico de San Antonio.
A la visita de Leonard se uni-
eron la mascota The Coyote y
el popular personaje Ronald
McDonald, quien representó
a propietarios de restaurantes
McDonald’s que patrocinan la
mencionada casa hogar.
El evento denominado “Cena
con Kawhi” atrajo la atención de
pequeños pacientes que se encuentran en tratamiento médico y
son cuidados por sus respectivos
familiares que también se unieron al festejo, en el que además
asistieron invitados especiales.
Para los esposos Soria Jiménez,
con residencia en El Paso, Texas,
fue algo maravilloso disfrutar de
la cena y convivir con Leonard,
Ronald McDonald y The Coyote.
“Hemos residido aquí en Ronald McDonald House desde hace
cuatro meses que nació nuestra
hija, ya que ella tuvo cirugía de
corazón y todavía continua en
tra-tamiento médico. Esta casa
hogar nos tiene cerca de nuestra
hija, nos han dado excelente
trato, tanto administradores como
inquilinos. Ellos nos han hecho
sentir como en casa. Estamos muy
agradecidos por la ayuda que se
nos ha dado. No esperábamos
visita de Kawhi. Somos fans de
los Spurs desde que derrotaron al
Heat de Miami y para nosotros ha
sido emotivo poder habernos tomado fotos con el MVP”, expresó
el matrimonio Soria Jiménez.
“Estoy encantado de venir
a convivir con pacientes y sus
familiares. Para los Spurs es
algo maravilloso participar en
estos eventos comunitarios. La
cena logró acercarnos más con
pequeños que se encuentran
convaleciendo. Venimos a darles
ánimos, alivio y desearles pronta
recuperación. Todos disfrutamos

El concurrido evento culminó
con la sesión de firma de autógrafos en la que Leonard, sin
escatimar tiempo, se dio a la tarea
de complacer a todos los ahí reunidos que –aparte de recibir su
fotografía oficial autografiada– le
presentaron diversos artículos
para que los firmara, entre ellos
playeras con el No.2 (el que usa
en su camiseta de los Spurs), balones, banderines y fotomontajes
aprobados por la NBA.

Dignowity brings old-school deli to Eastside S.A.

If you’re looking for a local food
experience that stands out from
traditional Texas fare, you’ll find
it at Dignowity Meats.
Dignowity’s small building
makes it easy to miss, but the
incredible aromas of smoked pastrami, mac and cheese, and mustard
make you feel you are at an oldschool deli.
The deli marks the newest food
partnership between Denise Aguirre and Noel Cisneros, the duo
behind The Point Park & Eats in
Leon Springs, San Antonio’s first
food truck park.
“We always wanted to put our
footprint downtown, but inside
downtown is already expensive
and competitive, and we thought
this would be the next best area,”
Aguirre said. “There’s a lot happening right now in this neighborhood,
and we’re excited to be making a
difference.”
Aguirre and Cisneros found
the location and thought it would
be perfect for their dream of a
mom-and-pop style deli. Although
the location was out of their price
range, they were able to work with
a backer who shared their vision.
Once they had the location, the
pair looked to local food truck
owners Andrew Samia and Shane
Reed for Dignowity’s deli menu
for a joint partnership. Samia and
Reed, who own the gourmet food
truck Crazy Carl’s, brought their
unique approach to classic dishes
that any Texan would appreciate,
like the burnt end melt.
“Shane’s from Kansas City, Mo.,
where burnt end brisket is a real

specialty, so we brought it to the
menu,” Samia said. “You take the
most flavorful and the fattiest part
of the brisket, and chop it up into
little cubes. Then it gets reseasoned
again and smoked one more time so
you get that extra charred flavor.”
The large indoor kitchen and
smokehouse allow Samia and Reed
to experiment and create new dishes, but they have taken care to keep
the entire menu locally sourced or
house made.
“We started smoking our own
pastrami in-house this week,”
Samia said. “It takes a couple of
weeks for the finished product, but
we’re happy with it. It takes time
to flavor and prep it, but people
have been real excited to see the
authenticity.”
All Dignowity’s sandwich breads
are created by Taylor Becken of
C’est La Vie Bakery, or their lo-
cal H-E-B bakery. Customers can
also find Dublin sodas, which are
shipped from Dublin, Texas.
Samia and Reed have also developed delectable in-house mustard
that pairs with any sandwich,
but best compliments the house
Reuben.
“We take yellow mustard seeds
and brown mustard seeds, and
leave it overnight with apple cider
vinegar,” Samia said. “We decided
to use a little beer in the recipe,
so we worked with our neighbors
Alamo Beer Company to make that
happen. We’re happy with how it
worked out.”
Aguirre plans to work with
Alamo more this year, and will
eventually offer the locally made
beer on the menu. Although it’s
only been a month since Dignowity’s soft opening, people are hearing about the unique sandwiches by
word of mouth.
“We didn’t just want to be another BBQ joint,” Aguirre said. “We
wanted to do something different
so there’s a lot of different flavor
combinations.”
Aguirre and Cisneros have already slated Dignowity for expansion this year. Dignowity already
offers outdoor picnic tables for
their customers, but the owners
hope to set up a beer garden in the
back as well.
“We are happy to be here, and
we’re already seeing growth,”
Aguirre said. “Right now we’re just
taking baby steps.”
Eating locally has never tasted
so good.
Dignowity Meats is located at
1701 E Houston St, across from
Tucker’s Kozy Korner. The restaurant opens every day from 11
a.m to 3 p.m.

SAMA bowls over for contemporary pottery

The San Antonio Museum of
Art proves, that ceramics can
be more than a pretty vase in
their newest exhibit, “Ancient to
Modern: Japanese Contemporary
Ceramics and their Sources.”
On the third floor of the Special
Exhibitions Gallery, Asian Art
Curator Emily Sano has selected
50 works of art that span thousands of years and explore the
unique beauty, form, and function
of Japanese pottery.
“The wood in the kiln forms
ashes that flow up and circulate
in the air and then they can fall
on the pots, and with the heat
they fuse and melt and create this
glaze,” Sano said. “That becomes
the basis of decoration for Japanese potters for a very long time
and they learn to exploit that.”
Although China was the first to
develop major technical advancements in pottery like the wheel
and the kiln, Japan was able to
use those same techniques to develop pieces that were functional
and unique.
“From the 7th century to 12th
century, this was all accidental,”
Dr. Sano said. “The [Japanese]
potters were farmers, so they
were making ceramics for their
own domestic uses, such as for
storage for grain, rice, barley,

or oils.”
While Chinese potters specialized in precise and traditional
vessels, Japanese potters experimented with the chemical reactions between clay, wood and
heat to create beautiful vases,
pots and tea ceremony ware.
“The Japanese did something
entirely different with these tech-
niques,” Sano said.
In the work “Untitled (Blue
Mist),” artist Takahiro Kondo
builds on the Chinese and Japanese traditions by including glass
and metal elements to the usual
cobalt blue porcelain. Kondo
uses his own patented drop glaze
to create a fine mist appearance,
which also represents the differ-
ent physical states of water.
Although Japanese pottery
techniques have been passed
down through families for centuries, a new school of women
potters have emerged to create
multimedia art processes.
Pieces like Mishima Kimiyo’s
“Work EC-S1” demonstrate the
resourcefulness of female potters
in Japan. Kimiyo used ceramics
with her printmaking training to
create a basket filled with empty
cans, which represents a wasteful
attitude often found in modern
society.
“The women potters are growing in numbers and strength these
days, and they certainly had a
hard time,” Sano said. “Normally
the potters come from families
invented their own methods, so
the women potters had to learn
methods by attending art school
and teaching each other, but the
result is incredible and exciting.”
The SAMA will show “Ancient
to Modern: Japanese Contemporary Ceramics and their Sources”
from Jan 17, to April 5, 2015.

turned it into a festival for everyone to enjoy for free.
Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair
comes to San Antonio March 1215 at the Historic Market Square
and will have all the greatest
names of Tejano music playing
on four different stages.
San Antonio is what the TMA’s
call “Tejano Music Capital of
the world,” and for the span of
four days, the family-orientated
event will offer performances

‘Game of Thrones’ author’s letter
revealing saga’s future leaked online

EFE - A three-page letter written in 1993 by novelist George
R.R. Martin about some details
regarding the possible future ending of the saga “A Song of Fire
and Ice” and its televised adaptation “Game of Thrones” has been
leaked online, according to the
website The Wrap.
In the letter, Martin writes to his
publisher that he planned the story
as a trilogy in which only five of
its main characters would survive:
Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow, as well as
siblings Arya and Bran Stark.
The document appeared on
Twitter posted by Waterstones
Books publishers and was sub-
sequently removed, but whose
content was captured and posted
by a user Thursday on Tumblr.
Martin expressed in the letter his
original vision of the work which
has gone from being a trilogy to
a project of seven volumes and a
world-wide hit on the small screen.
Martin had planned the death
of Ed and Catelyn Stark, the
revenge of Daenerys Targaryen
and her invasion of the seven
kingdoms presented in the story,
an unconsummated love affair
between half-siblings Arya Stark
and Jon Snow and the birth of a
son to Sansa Stark fathered by

In “Far Cry 4” there are tons of
pesky enemies to make you yank
out chunks of your hair and scream
obscenities at your television.
Surprisingly though, the worse of
those enemies is not the heavily
armed hordes of armed infantry,
instead it is the lowly honey badger and the eagle.
Both of these enemies are relentless, hard to kill, and, most
importantly, annoying. It is possible to spend an entire clip of
ammo on trying to kill just one
honey badger, and shooting an
eagle down takes some precision
aiming.
I finally resulted to just killing
honey badgers with C4 and running for cover when I was attacked
by an eagle.
Throughout gaming history,
there have been worse and more
annoying enemies, though. Enemies that would make me break
controllers and have me throwing
temper tantrums as a kid. You
know the ones, not the big boss
enemies that take a lot to beat
but the small innocuous ones that
would eat your sanity away.
The first time I remember feeling like I could lose my mind had
to have gone back to the medusa
heads in “Castlevania”. These
floating heads would move across
the screen in odd patterns at crucial moments when you had to
jump carefully from platform to
platform. Of course those hitting
you wouldn’t kill you; in fact they

The rage came from the fact that
they would hit you and knock you
off of platforms back down to the
bottom to start all over again. They
were the nastiest and most frustrating part of all of “Castlevania”
and, yes, that includes bosses.
In “Half-Life” when you took
control of Gordon Freeman, sure
all of the institute of Black Mesa
was out to destroy you. But they
weren’t the thing I worried about
the most. Instead it was the head
crabs. These fast moving enemies
would attack you relentlessly and
in great numbers. They were horrible and you had to be quick in
order to kill them before they got
to you.
Not all annoying video game
characters have to attack you.
When Nintendo released “Duck
Hunt”, the world was introduced
to a hound dog that would come
out and laugh at you when you
missed hitting a couple of ducks
with your gun. He would really
only snicker but it felt like an attack on your ego, it was though
the dog was looking through the
screen, peering into your soul and
seeing all past and future mistakes

it down to select enemies or enemy
types either. In the case of “Ninja
Gaiden”, this applies to the game
as a whole. From its beginnings
on Nintendo to the more recent
entries on Xbox and PlayStation,
this is a game that was out to drive
you insane with frustration. Every
enemy in the game was tough and
just when you thought you were
getting good, the game would
decide to throw various enemy
types at you all at the same time.
My hair probably turned grey
earlier than it should have in life
because of this one, but I managed
to finish all of them. Sometimes
it is tough to not want to put that
on my work resume when I apply
places. People need to know.
The majority of annoying bad
guys are small and fast which
makes them more annoying and
games like “Ninja Gaiden” lead to
games like ‘”Dark Souls” (which
is another can of worms that is
too traumatic to get into) but at
the end of the frustrating gaming
day gamers have come to know
them by name. What is the worse

American Summer” always delights with his unique comedy
style that he demonstrated in
“Stella” and “The Baxter.” This
sounds like more of the same great
quirkiness that he is known for.
The entire lineup sounds fantastic with the ultimate downside

“Siento que es un disco muy
orgánico, muy relajado y nada
pretencioso. Tiene una poesía
muy cotidiana y muy simple”,
dijo sobre los diez temas inéditos que formarán parte de su
nuevo álbum.
El músico ha residido en los
últimos tres años en Australia,
una experiencia que le ha permitido “fusionar culturas” y
volver de alguna manera a sus
orígenes musicales.

que es disfrutar de un buen piano, un buen acordeón, un buen
chelo o una buena trompeta.
Creo que es uno de mis discos más ricos, musicalmente
hablando”, manifestó.
En este álbum, el cantante
también aprovechó para rendir
un homenaje a Puerto Rico con
la canción “Isla Bella”, en la
que da un repaso “nostálgico”
a su tierra de origen.
“No importa si eres isleño o
no, porque te vas a identificar
si has tenido que dejar tu tierra
buscando una mejor vida o
porque así te lo exige tu carrera”, argumentó.
El proceso creativo de “A
quien quiera escuchar” se desarrolló en medio de una gira
mundial, lo que constituyó una
experiencia diferente para el
músico.
“Normalmente lo que hago
es encerrarme en un estudio
durante nueve meses y no hago
otra cosa que crear música”,
relató.
Para la producción de este
trabajo Ricky Martin se rodeó
de algunos profesionales como
el cantautor Pedro Capó, el
cubano Yotuel Romero, excomponente del grupo “Orishas”,
o la cantante española Beatriz
Luengo, que también ha escrito
y compuesto algunas de sus
canciones.
“Ellos son los que traen poesía e historias que me llegan al
corazón. Estoy encantado de
trabajar con ellos y espero que
sea el comienzo de muchas cosas que podamos hacer juntos”,
señaló.
El puertorriqueño estrenó el
pasado mes la balada “Disparo
al corazón”, el segundo sencillo de su nueva producción y
que fue escrita por Martin, en
colaboración con los también
puertorriqueños Yoel Henríquez y Pedro Capó, así como
con el español Rafael Esparza

Hace 8 años que no veía a mi
padre y me lo acabo de encontrar
en un centro comercial. Soy una
chica de 26 años, y cuando dejé
de ver a mi padre yo era una
adolescente que apenas salía de
preparatoria. Mi papá tenía un
problema de alcoholismo muy
grave en ese entonces y lo que
nos separó fue que nos dejaba
muchas horas solas a mi madre,
a mis hermanas y a mí. Siempre
se iba con sus amigos a tomar
y llegó un momento en que ya
no traía dinero a la casa, por lo
que nos tuvimos que meter a
trabajar mi madre y yo, pues mis
hermanas tenían en ese entonces
14 y 12 años.
Nuestra situación familiar era
muy difícil y con frecuencia
mi padre llegaba a casa por las

madrugadas, gritando y despertándonos. Mi mamá pasaba
horas llorando y nunca nos decía
nada hasta que se enfermó. Se
comenzó a enfermar de nervios
y se le bajaba la presión mucho
a todas horas del día. Una noche
que mi padre llegó alcoholizado,
mi mamá estaba tirada en la
cocina sin poder moverse de un
dolor muy fuerte que tenía en el
pecho. Mi padre no me ayudaba
y cuando le pedí ayuda solo se
reía y no escuchaba lo que le
decíamos mis hermanas y yo.
Mi madre murió de un ataque
al corazón y yo no quise que
mi padre tuviera contacto con
mis hermanas o conmigo, pues
siempre lo creí culpable. Yo no
volví a ver a mi padre, y lo único
que supe de él fue que entró a
un centro de rehabilitación y ya
no toma bebidas alcohólicas.
Además, supe que estuvo muy
deprimido por la muerte de mi
madre.
Ahora que me lo encontré,
él no me vio pero yo lo noté
triste, solo y con falta de amor.
No sé si mis hermanas puedan
perdonarlo, pero yo siento ganas
de saber cómo está.
Dime si debería buscarlo, y
cómo debo hablarle a mis her-
manas de él.
Querida hija mayor:
Siento mucho la pérdida de tu
madre, y más que haya sido por
falta de atención de parte de tu
padre. Creo que eres una mujer
muy madura y considerada al estar pensando en tu padre después
de lo sucedido, pues como dices
tú, a fin de cuentas el siempre
será tu padre.
Considero que estás haciendo
lo correcto en querer desprender
ese coraje y resentimiento con
él, y por lo mismo te aconsejo

River City Rockfest returns to
pull at nostalgic heartstrings

The young junior high version of myself is screaming in
excitement on the inside over
this year’s River City Rockfest
lineup. The festival returns May
24 to the AT&T Center and tickets went on sale last Friday.
Now in its third year, the festival has upped the ante with the
lineup this year with headliners
such as Linkin Park, which I believe is a huge step up from the
first major headliner they had,
Kid Rock (no offense).
Though I haven’t intentionally
played a Linkin Park song in
close to 10 years, the fond memories of laying in my room blasting
the copy of Meteora my friend
had burned for me still bring a
smile to my face reminiscing of
much simpler times.
Albeit the festival is dedicated
towards the metalheads of our
fair city, a genre I will be the first
to admit I am not all too familiar
with; the lineup includes names I
recognize and had in my CD collection from my brief stint with
metal back when I was a young
scene girl wearing ridiculous
amounts of eyeliner trying find
which outlet of music best expressed my teenage angst (excuse
me while I cringe).
Names such as In Flames, Anthrax and We are Harlot stand out
and that I look forward to seeing.
The way music taste evolves
is such a strange concept to think
about. Even though I haven’t
played anything from these bands
in a while, I look forward to seeing them because of the memories that coincide with them and
the simple fact that I had never
seen any of these acts live before.
It makes me happy and appreciative that music festivals
add that nostalgic component
that provides the opportunity
for people to see acts that they’d
never thought they’d see in general or again.
Another component that can be
much appreciated is the local one.
San Antonio metal natives Upon
a Burning Body are on the line up
and return to their own backyard
to share the stage with big names.
Upon a Burning Body is the
first local band I had ever heard
of upon moving to San Antonio.
At the time, they had just been
signed to a record deal and were
on their way to becoming big.
Years later, here they are returning as a major act performing at
a major festival.
My guilty pleasure on the
lineup is The Pretty Reckless.
What can I say? I’m a Taylor
Momsen fan. She’s come a long
way from playing a young naïve
socialite Jenny Humphries on
Gossip Girl.
As the front woman for The
Pretty Reckless, I admire how
she’s able to channel old fashioned rock ’n’ roll angst and stick
to its roots. She stayed clear of
the cliché niche of actors turned
wannabe pop stars, and I can appreciate one less pop song shoved
down my throat by the radio. But
despite that, the girl has a real
rock ’n’ roll soul.
Yes, she causes a stir with her
controversial lingerie wardrobe
she chooses to prance around the
stage in, but the girl isn’t trying
to be a role model as she’s stated
before.
More acts are to be announced
throughout the next few months
for River City Rockfest and
speaking of announcements,
Maverick Music Festival announced that they would release
the rest of their lineup this week,
but that’s a completely column.
