noteworthy
Did you know that in 2014, the average home price in this area
(northwestern Hays County) had gone up by 10.8%?
Wow, that’s impressive! What was our average home price?
Our average price was $414,968, and the median, (where half the
homes that sold were above this price and half below), was $391,000.
How many sales were there? Did it take long to sell homes?
There were 631 closed transactions in 2014, and the number of new listings
was down by just under 2%. Homes were on the market an average of 77 days,
and sold for an average of 96.7% of asking price.
That sounds like a healthy, balanced market!
It is, and as we continue to have people move into the area, we also continue to
have new development projects coming in to supply those homes.
Ask a Dripping Springs Stanberry agent for more details about upcoming projects!

What’s love got to do with it?
It was a hallmark of the 1970’s when
the famed author Tom Wolfe dubbed
it the “me generation.” It was a harsh
view perhaps of what he perceived to
be narcissism in the population coming
of age. After all most of us had been
taught to think of others and not focus
on ourselves. Such actions were at the
least impolite and at worst sinful. It was
definitely a turning point in our American culture for such brazen behavior. Yet
I applaud those in that era who turned
their gaze inside.
If you have ever paid attention to what the flight attendant is
saying before take off, you know that it is imperative you put on
your oxygen mask, should the need arise, before you put it on your
child. The reason for this seemingly selfish act is because if you’re
not breathing you’re not going to be any help at all to others who
will need your assistance. The same reasoning applies with love; if
you don’t love and care for yourself, there is no possible way you
can deliver that to someone else.
Loving yourself creates the space for you to love others. Our
amazing universe is based on simple principles, with balance being
one of the biggest. This month is the perfect time to reflect on the
love and care you give yourself. My guess is it will be a truthful
mirror of how you love those closest to you. Take Tom Wolfe’s
criticism and turn it into something beneficial for everyone, including yourself.
Thank you for joining us.

Often people contact me that are having
trouble with their marriages, and wonder
whether it is better to seek out couples
counseling or individual counseling. Are
the issues better to be worked on as a
unit, at the same time or would it be more
helpful to address the individual things
bothering one or the other about their current state of their marriage? The answer is: Yes.
What I mean by “yes,” is that the best possible scenario is that
a couple comes in realizing they each have things they are dragging into the room from their past that is causing disruption to
the marriage. Each person has a different filter for how events are
processed – meaning the same event will look and feel differently
to each person and each will (likely) have different interpretations
and reactions to what is happening. Those reactions, usually rooted
deeply in what we learned from our families of origin, are what
individual counseling can help to address. The key is that you have
to own the fact that you are the problem. Not the whole problem,
but enough of one that you have to decide to improve, which will
make things better.
That leads us to why couples counseling can help. The dream
scenario is that each person in a couple understands that they have
work to do, individually, to be a better partner and spouse. Then
the strategies discussed in couples' sessions are guidelines that both
are open to adhering to as part of their own commitment to their
own change.
A difficulty for many people is that they have suffered so much
damage from their families or early relationships, that it would
seemingly crush them to admit they they are a big part of the problem. That is why I believe that to really flourish in a marriage it is
essential to understand that we are more flawed than we imagine,
and that God loves us more than we imagine, both at the same time.
That starting point can begin the healing that can last a lifetime and
beyond.

National Children’s Dental Health Month
Every February we celebrate National
Children’s Dental Health Month. This
provides our office the opportunity to talk
to children about the importance of their
oral health. Here are some tips to help you
with your little ones.
Ages 3 to 7:
1) Show, don’t tell. Floss once a day,
and brush and rinse twice a day, every day. Share the experience
with your child. When leading by example, kids are likely to imitate
behavior and make oral hygiene feel less like a "kid thing."
2) Make oral care fun. Turn flossing into a funny-face contest, or
make brushing a "Simon says" game by calling out different parts
of the mouth. Try rinsing with mouthwash as a family and see who
can go the longest without laughing.
3) Reward healthy behavior. Offer rewards for achieving brushing, flossing and rinsing goals. Post a calendar in the bathroom and
reward kids with a gold star for each day of great oral care. At the
end of each month, praise kids for a job well done.
Ages 8 to 10:
1) Provide proof. Visual cues serve as powerful motivation for
kids. Post pictures of great smiles of favorite role models in the
bathroom. Use a children's mouthwash that attracts the particles
that brushing can leave behind, giving kids reason to believe that
rinsing works – the proof is in the sink.
2) Let kids decide. Give kids the freedom to make decisions. Let
by Ron S. White, DDS
them choose their favorite toothbrush, a cool toothpaste and type
of floss. Then keep the bathroom stocked.
3) Clean to the beat. Brushing, flossing and rinsing are all rhythmic activities. Play music to help kids enjoy oral care routines. On
average, brushing should last two minutes and rinsing 60 seconds.
Together these activities last the length of a typical song.
Ages 11 to 12:
1) Embrace the power of the brush. At this age, kids become
increasingly aware and often self-conscious of appearances. Remind
kids about the power of a healthy smile to build their confidence.
2) Recruit others. Enlist older siblings and other family members
to encourage proper oral hygiene. Another voice for good care can
be influential and make a powerful impact on kids' behavior.

Outing gout
Gout is a very painful type of inflammatory arthritis. It is a chronic,
progressive disease caused by high uric
acid levels in your blood. Many people
experience their first flare up in the
middle of the night, out of the blue. The
area suddenly seems to be on fire, with
swelling, redness, it may also feel hot
and be extremely tender. It commonly
affects the joints in the big toe, but may also affect the rest of the
foot/ankle, hands and elbows.
People may have high uric acid levels for years before ever
experiencing the wrath of gout. However, once you have a gout
attack (uric acid forms crystals which inflame your joints) you
unfortunately are likely to have ongoing flare ups. There are four
stages of gout.
1) High uric acid levels without symptoms.
2) Gout attack.
3) Between gout attacks (no symptoms but joint damage may
still occur ).
4) Chronic gout. While it is a myth that diet causes gout, certain
foods should be avoided.
Red meat, organ meats, beer, spinach, asparagus, cauliflour,
mushrooms, oatmeal, dried beans, peas, lentils and several types of
seafood. Foods that are low purine may be beneficial such as breads,

milk, tomatoes, eggs and cheese. Some people claim tart cherry juice
is the new wonder drink that helps decrease uric acid in the blood.
Always talk with your doctor if you experience a gout episode.
Most people don’t need to be coaxed to seek medical help for this
condition. I know of a 50-year-old man who passed out from pain
while waiting in the drug store for his prescription.
There are medications available to help ease the symptoms and
lessen the impact of gout. One of my residents is trying the tart
cherry juice. He is claiming relief. Cheers!

Spectacular venacular
We are weird here at Family
First. We know it. In fact, we own
it as one of our core values.
Our work environment is different. We set our office up in an
open environment to feel more
like a coffee house than a doctor's office. The point of that is to help
create a sense of community. Nothing brings us more joy than our
practice members interacting and running into friends and family.
We use some weird words, and we would love to hear you start
using them as well!
Spinal Subluxation Complex – Not many things excite me more
than someone using the word "subluxation!" What is that? When
you are subluxated, your have a spinal misalignment that is putting
stress on your central nervous system (CNS-your brain, spinal cord
and nerves) that can dramatically affect your body's ability to adapt
to your environment and heal.
Innate Intelligence – This is a very specific and unique chiropractic term that has been used by us chiros now for well over a century.
It is the basic idea that your body runs itself. You do not control
most of the actions and activities that the 75 trillion cells inside of
you are doing right now. Your innate intelligence does. That innate
intelligence runs through your CNS and its the reason why we focus
so closely on keeping stress off of those nerves
by Dr. Chae Tracy
Adjustment – How we take stress off your CNS, allowing better
cell to cell communication. Please do not use the word "manipulate"
in our offices – I do not like to be manipulated and I doubt you do
either!
Practice Member or "our peeps!" – We don't care much for
the word patient because it implies a "treatment/diagnosis" style
of health care. We do not claim to treat anything and that is an
important distinction. What we do is remove stress to your CNS,
through a series of adjustments, and we then objectively measure
our ability to do so.
The point is that we are having a blast serving our community
and creating a culture that is just plain different. But we feel it is a
cultural shift that can change the health care of our planet. We really
think that passion and fun for our craft comes through in our offices.
We recognize none of that is possible without you and your support.
Adio, Dr. C. Chae Tracy D.C.

Therapeutic grade essential oils
Hippocrates, the father of medicine
said, “The way to health is to have an
aromatic bath and scented massage every
day.” The use of essential oils/aromatherapy has been a major player in the world
for thousands of years. Essential oils are
highly concentrated, being distilled from
various plant life. The essential oil of a
plant and the human blood share several
common properties. Essential oils have a
chemical structure similar to the human
cell enabling them to be readily available and accepted by the body.
The quality, quantity and type of aromatic compounds will vary
depending on the climate, soil and distillation factors of essential
oils. Approximately two-percent of essential oils are produced for
therapeutic application, the rest are used by the cosmetics, perfume,
pharmaceutical or food industries. Gas chromatography and the
ISO (International Standard Organization) analyze the constituents
of an oil to determine whether it is therapeutic versus adulterated.
Therapeutic treatment with oils has been noted by the English, using a small amount to the body; the French prefer ingestion via sugar
cube or bread, while the German model recommends inhalation.
Benefits of therapeutic grade essential oils are many: oxygenating
cells stimulating the immune system, the bio-electrical frequency
enhances the body’s general functioning, some have the ability to
pass the blood–brain barrier, others detoxify the cells and blood in
the body having properties that are anti-bacterial, antifungal, anti-
by Sharon Clark
parasitic, antiviral, anti-oxidant or antiseptic. Essential oils, when
incorporated with various therapeutic modalities such as massage,
create a synergy or enhancement to the overall treatment. Oils have
an impact on the physiology of the body, mind, emotion and spirit
through inhalation in about 20 seconds or absorption via the skin
within 20 minutes. Lotions, oils and salts can be carriers for essential
oils as well as creating perfumes and sprays, personal care products,
gargles and cleaning products, for example.
The scientific study of therapeutic properties came to the forefront
in the 1920’s when the French cosmetic chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse burnt his arm in the lab and applied lavender oil, healing the
wound, leaving no scar.
Sharon Clark wishes to share more information about the benefits and usage that therapeutic grade essential oils may have for you in your life. Her
professional background includes nursing, massage, aromatherapy and
microcurrent. 512-413-3248 by appointment only. She has recently moved

Get your kitchen in shape
by Nerissa Oden
How can your kitchen foster wellness?
By getting it fit! A healthy kitchen will support improved eating habits for the whole
family, and now’s the time to shape it up!
Here are a few criteria for getting your
kitchen in shape:
All appliances must be working properly.
Refrigerators should cool between 37-40 degrees fahrenheit. Freezers should be set to 0 degrees fahrenheit. Ovens should be fully
preheated within 20 minutes. Appliance thermometers are found
at hardware stores and are very affordable. Cooktop burners, dishwasher and all countertop appliances should also function properly.
Run the kitchen faucet to hot just before starting your dishwasher.
This will provide your washer with hot water for improved cleaning
and sanitizing. It will also melt any buildup of fats in the drain that
slow or stop dirty water from draining.
Refrigerators, cutting boards and countertops should be kept
clean. Use holistic cleaners, like 3% hydrogen peroxide.
Crockpots combine home-cooked meals with the busy, American lifestyle. Taste combinations are truly unlimited! Its smooth,
ceramic surface is easy to clean if you stay away from rice, pasta
and cheese ingredients.
Personal blenders are very popular for snacks and meals made
from fresh fruits and vegetables. Flavor combinations are unlimited
and do not require cooking.
Soak fresh produce in diluted, “food grade” hydrogen peroxide
to sanitize and reduce mold spores for longer lasting produce. Fill
sink with about four inches of water and one tablespoon of concentrate. Soak for three to five minutes, rotate or agitate produce
for total exposure. Rinse.
Opaque ice cubes may be frozen messages about impurities in
your water. Test your water with a testing kit or try this home test:
Fill one-half of one ice tray with faucet water and fill the other half
with distilled water. Distilled water will produce a more transparent cube.

The 411 on chemical peels
by Karen Laine,
Para-Medical Aesthetician
If you want more flawless, youthful
skin with fewer fine lines and wrinkles,
you’re describing results you can get
with chemical peels. Here’s a more indepth look at what they are, the results
you can expect, and whether this skin
care treatment is suitable for your complexion.
What is a chemical peel? This treatment breaks down the uppermost dead
and dehydrated layers of skin to create a firmer, more youthful appearance with fewer wrinkles and a more even skin tone. There are
a variety of chemical peel options, which is why you might have
seen diverse chemical peel reviews saying different things about
recovery time, maintenance, and overall results.
Light chemical peel: Many people with minor skin issues
choose a light chemical peel. It improves texture, clarity and skin
tone while reducing wrinkles. It’s subtle at first, but with repeated
treatments, the results are more apparent. No recovery period is
necessary for light chemical peels, but it’s best to protect this new,
undamaged skin layer with sunblock to preserve the results.
Medium chemical peel: After a single medium chemical peel,
the skin is noticeably smoother and younger looking. Patients
might need a bit of time to heal after the procedure. It’s wise to
avoid sun exposure for several months after the peel so the color of
skin doesn’t change. Use a pigment suppressive home care product
pre and post peel. The use of sunblock is highly recommended.
Deep chemical peel: Extremely dramatic results occur with
deep chemical peels, however, you can expect healing time to be
necessary. Your doctor might also recommend that you keep your
face protected from the sun permanently to avoid changes in skin
color. Again, pre and post-peel treatment with a pigment suppressive home care product will be required in addition to mandatory
sunblock use.
Before you schedule any type of chemical peel, your skin
should be professionally evaluated and the skin care treatment customized according to your specific needs. The goal is to determine
the chemical peel that will provide maximum results with minimal
down time.

Is old man winter stealing your energy?
The body’s cells and organ systems
depend on an adequate supply of energy
in order for our physiological resilience
to function optimally. The mitochondria,
known as the powerhouse of the cell,
contain nutrients and enzymes that are
important for cellular energy metabolism,
especially when we are taxed by environmental challenges like the chill of winter, molds, pollens, viruses
and bacteria. There are many things that can drain energy reserves
making us vulnerable to colds, flu and infections. Lack of sleep,
too much stress, poor nutrition and prescription medications can
draw on our energy reserves, using them up faster than they can
be replenished.
When the immune system is under attack, every bit of the metabolic reserve available for energy can be quickly depleted, leaving us
exhausted, even lethargic. Here are ways to combat winter immune
fatigue: Sleep. Go to sleep early and get at least eight hours of sleep
every night. Try taking a 30-minute, easy walk one hour before you
go to bed to improve the quality of your sleep.
Moderate Exercise. Physical movement is essential for circulating energy – but avoid perspiring excessively.
The Winter Diet. In winter, lean toward iron-rich foods such
spinach, broccoli, dried plums, oats, quinoa, sunflower and sesame
seeds, walnuts, yams, squash, kale, garlic, scallions and parsley.
Hearty soups and warming spice teas, with cinnamon, ginger or

cayenne are also good for you during the winter months
Mitochondria restorative nutrients. In order to jump-start cellular
energy production, include the powerful antioxidant trio of alpha
lipoic acid, N-acetyl cysteine and acetyl L-carnitine, which have
been shown to increase energy production and at the same time
recharge the primary cellular antioxidant pools of vitamin E, C and
glutathione. We recommend Mitocore by Orthomolecular which is
a multivitamin specifically designed for these winter months, which
includes all of the key micronutrients as well as phytonutrients such
as green tea, broccoli seed extract and resveratrol to protect the
mitochondria and continually renew the cycle of energy production.

What if I picked the wrong health insurance?
If you still need to choose new health insurance for 2015, you only have two weeks
left. That’s right; the final day to submit an
application during this Open Enrollment will
be February 15, 2015! After that you can only
apply for individual ACA-Compliant health
insurance if you have a special qualifying life event like: a birth,
adoption, marriage, divorce, death, loss of coverage from employer’s
insurance or a move outside of your plan’s coverage area. The
penalty this year for not having “qualified” health insurance for at
least nine months is two-percent of your income.
If you are disappointed in a new health plan that you chose
during this Open Enrollment (since November 15, 2014), you can
still apply for a better one and once issued, cancel the original one!
Sometimes a client experiences buyer’s remorse once they realize
their health insurance won’t pay for their doctor’s services.
For example, an HMO plan will only cover treatment and services performed by “In-Network” providers and facilities (except
for emergencies.) If your favorite family doctor only accepts PPO
insurance plans, your HMO plan will not benefit you when seeking
his/her services. You must choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP)
from the HMO plan’s provider directory. If you need the services
of a Specialist, your PCP must give you a referral.
This problem can also occur with certain other networks, not just
with HMO’s! There are now some new health plans which utilize
“local PPO” networks. These usually have less preferred providers
by Tom Diehl
than the traditional National PPO networks. If you choose a health
plan with an “EPO” Network, these give you some of the freedom
to choose your own doctor, but they also have emergency-only
benefits if you go “out-of-network” for medical treatment. Never
assume your doctor is in a particular network. Always find out if
they are “In-Network” for the insurance plan you want.
Ask your local agent to verify a doctor’s network affiliation,
before choosing new health insurance. It can make a huge difference
regarding claim payment! Agents offer many other free services, as
well as their experience and expertise.
Tom has been a licensed independent insurance agent in Dripping
Springs since 2003. There are no fees for his assistance in finding
the best plans for his client’s specific situation, and free quotes can

Is your desk job causing you neck pain?
Spring and the wonderful month of
March is upon is. The warmer temperatures, clear skies and new growth will
soon be all around us all. But even with the
new lease on life, we still have a little time
left in the gym. March is synonymous with
college basketball! This month’s article
will focus on the injuries common with the hardcourt.
The most common is an ankle sprain. Over 90% of ankle sprains
involve the anterior talofibular ligament, usually from a plantarflexed
inversion injury which means your toes are pointed down and you
land on the outside of your foot. Most people have this happen when
they land on someone else’s foot coming down from a rebound or
jump shot. First thing to do is to apply the RICE principle (RestIce-Compression-Elevation) for the first 24-36 hours. Studies have
shown that anymore rest is actually counterproductive and that
you should get the joint moving as soon as possible. Try to return
to a normal gait pattern as soon as possible. A typical ankle sprain
should return to normal in one to two weeks, if the ankle does not
show improvement, then further diagnostics and trip to your doctor/
physical therapist may be needed. Physical therapy can help with
your joint proprioception, strength, range of motion and overall
ankle performance.
Another common injury is overuse, from jumping over and over.
Jumper’s knee or patellar tendinitis is characterized by pain along
by Jeremy Kethley, PT
the tendon below the kneecap. Another overuse injury is Achilles
tendinitis. This tendon runs from your calf muscle down to your heel
bone. These muscles are extremely important in explosive moves
and jumping. These types of injuries are treated with NSAIDS,
ice, stretching of the muscles, supportive taping and correcting the
muscle imbalance. Jumping form and mechanics could be evaluated by a trained professional. Physical therapists are educated in
correcting and treating such problems.
Then there are your traumatic injuries to the rest of the body.
Knee injuries can result in tears of the meniscus, anterior/posterior
cruciate ligaments and/or medial/lateral collateral ligaments. Your
knee will be unstable and give away consistently if there is a tear.
These traumatic injuries should always be evaluated by your doctor to see if surgery will be needed. Physical therapy will be an
essential part of your rehabilitation program to get you back on the
hardcourt. Enjoy the games!
Jeremy is the owner of Kethley Physical Therapy and has been
providing physical therapy to residents of Dripping Springs for 13
years. KPT, with four licensed therapists, is open 7am-6pm, Monday-Friday. It is a state-of-the-art clinic in the heart of Dripping

What is love?
Agua Dulce
Bulk Water Delivery
by Steve Smothers
In our culture, love is almost a
meaningless word: “I love my wife. I
love my dog. I love pizza. I love God.”
Obviously, each of these has a different
meaning. In the Greek language there
are several different words for love.
We’ll look at three of these.
Eros is a physical/sensual love. Eros looks for what it can “get.”
It is about self-satisfaction: “I love you if you make me happy.” Eros
(erotic lust), though very common in our culture is not used in the
New Testament. Is this the love you’re after?
Phileo is brotherly love. It speaks of affection and fondness. It
involves giving as well as receiving, but when strained will collapse
in a crisis. Phileo love is higher than eros because it is about our
happiness rather than my happiness.
In counseling couples preparing for marriage, I often discuss
these various types of love, pointing out that eros love is about
physical attraction and is self-centered and will not last. Phileo is a
give and take love, but a problem arises when one is depleted and
has nothing to give the other partner. So, is there a higher love?
Agape is the noblest Greek word for love. It is a love not kindled
by the merit of its object; it is unconditional love. You might wonder,
how could anyone express Agape love? The answer: No one can.
Agape is the unconditional love of God. 1 John 4:16 says, ”God is
love.” Love is God’s very nature and it is an expression of who He
is. We were created to demonstrate this love to others: “If God so
loved us, we also ought to love one another.” (1 John 4:11)
As followers of Jesus, we are given a new capacity to love others
with God’s love. Galatians 5:22 explains, “The fruit of the Spirit
is love…” In other words, the result of a spiritual relationship with
God through Jesus Christ is the new capacity to love others with the
very agape love of God. During this season, instead of indulging in
erotic lust or settling for brotherly affection, reach for the highest
love – God’s agape love.

Dripping Springs Outlook
Cold weather is difficult for many pets.
Here are some pointers to make life a bit
easier for them.
Know your pets’ cold tolerance. Just
like people, pets’ cold tolerance can vary
from pet to pet based on their coat, body
fat stores, activity level and health. Obviously, pets with heavy coats are better able
to manage cold weather. The short haired
versions will need shorter times outside.
Cold weather will exacerbate arthritic pain (don’t I know) in our
older pets. Pets with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease or hormonal imbalances (such as Cushing’s disease) may have a harder
time regulating their body temperature, and may be more susceptible
to problems from temperature extremes. If your pet hasn’t been to
the vet in a while, this would be a great time to rule out diseases
that affect their cold tolerance.
Provide bedding choices. Provide good insulation from the cold
floor. A nice cozy bed with low walls helps especially if constructed
from orthopedic foam padding, which aids circulation.
Make noise before starting your car in the mornings. Outdoor
cats will often take refuge from the cold next to your warm car engine where they will be severely injured or killed when the engine
is started. We recommend you bang on the hood and/or honk your
horn before starting.
Keep pets away from space heaters. They can easily get burned
or knock them over causing a fire hazard. Pet proof your house in
general since the pets will spend more time indoors during winter.
Keep pets inside during cold nights when appropriate. Dogs with
heavy coats are better able to withstand cold temperatures, but no
pet should be left outside for long periods during below freezing
weather.
Prevent poisoning. Clean up antifreeze spills immediately as only
very small amounts can be deadly to pets. Keep holiday chocolate
locked away from pets as chocolate is toxic in large amounts.
Remember that xylitol, a sugar substitute found often in sugarless
gum, can also be toxic.
Provide shelter. If pets must stay outside in cold weather, they
need shelter from the wind and precipitation and they need good
insulation from the ground. Animals that are accustomed to the cold
are better able to cope with it. Our pampered indoor pets, even if
they have a heavy coat, will fair much worse if forced to spend long
periods in the weather.
Feed well and feed a good quality diet. Digestion actually generates heat.
Use pet clothing, especially if your pet is small and short coated.
A dry sweater can really help cold-sensitive animals. Besides, you
can have a little fun with this one. Perhaps an “ugly Christmas
sweater” would do the trick.

Litigation: “Men are like ….”
Awaiting the start of a jury trial in
a rural county, I caught a bit of the
testimony in the trial ahead of mine.
A young lady was trying to regain
custody of her pre-teen daughter.
What I observed reminded me of
one of the challenges encountered
in presenting a case to a jury. Trials
happen quickly and, as we know, you never get a second chance
to make a good first impression. The young lady was wearing a revealing cocktail dress which did little to create in the jurors’ minds
the best image of a caring mother of a pre-teen child. The negative impression her attire created was further reinforced when the
father’s lawyer, over the objection of her own lawyer, made her
admit that a bumper sticker on her pickup truck read, “Men are
like dirty diapers. They are full of (bleep) and they are always on
your (bleep).” (If you can’t figure out the “bleeps”, you can find
the “unsanitized” version of this article at RolandsLaw.com.)
Judges and juries look for objective confirmation of testimony
because they assume everyone will try to put the best spin on their
side of the story. Therefore, rightly or wrongly, things such as certain tattoos, bumper stickers, jewelry, attire and behavior in the
hallway can spell the difference between winning and losing at
trial. The effective trial lawyer will make clients aware of this fact
so that an otherwise winning presentation isn’t torpedoed by something that can be easily avoided.

Wintertime reds
As the short, Austin winter goes
on, most of us tend to enjoy heartier,
heavier foods. And these heavier foods
demand richer, more robust wines to
pair with them. Some of my favorite
wines to pair with dinner are those of
Italy. And some of the best wines to
accompany hearty fare are those based
on the grapes nebbiolo and sangiovese.
The nebbiolo grape is native to the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. It produces wines that, while lightly-colored, can be
very tannic and full bodied. The classic aromas associated with
nebbiolo are tar and roses. Flavors of cherries, raspberries, tobacco
and truffles are common. Heavily tannic when young, the best nebbiolo wines benefit greatly from lengthy aging. The most famous
wines made with this grape come from the villages of Barolo and
Barbaresco, and these names are noted on the label. Barolo and
Barbaresco range upwards from about $30, but younger drinking
versions of the nebbiolo grape are available for around $15-$20.
Probably the most widely known red wine grape of Italy is sangiovese. The best sangiovese wines are made in Tuscany. By far the
most popular is Chianti. Sangiovese based wines typically exhibit
tart cherry and baked earth aromas, with medium to high tannins
and high acidity. This high acidity is one of the things that makes
these wines such a good match for food. Chianti runs a broad range
of prices from around ten dollars up to several hundred. Perhaps
the greatest sangiovese based wines are those from the village of

Montalcino known as Brunello. Made exclusively from the clone
known as sangiovese grosso, Brunellos must spend at least two
years in oak barrels and at least four months in bottle before release.
Compared with Chianti, Brunello is typically richer and fleshier
with blackberry, chocolate and floral notes. Prices for Brunello start
around $35, and range up to quite a bit more.
Enjoy the cooler weather while you can, and enjoy some Italian
wine with your favorite winter dishes!

Financial preparations for spouse can brighten every Valentine’s Day
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor
Valentine’s Day is almost here. And
while it’s certainly fun to give and receive
chocolates and roses, why not go a little
deeper this year? Specifically, if you are
married, consider using this commemoration of love as a starting point for taking
care of your spouse in the future – even
if you’re not part of it.
Gavin J. Loftus
Actually, both you and your spouse
could designate Valentine’s Day as the
beginning of your joint efforts to provide financial security for the
surviving spouse when one of you is gone. Your strategy should
involve at least these three, key elements:
• Understanding your household’s finances – In some marriages,
one spouse handles all the household financial matters, including
investments. If this person were to pass away first, it could leave the
surviving spouse with the dual responsibility of managing day-today finances and tracking down all investment information. These
tasks could be overwhelming to someone who is unprepared to
deal with them, so you’ll want to take steps to ensure you and your
spouse are aware of your joint financial picture.
• Creating a future income plan – You and your spouse should
discuss your sources of income and identify which ones are specifically tied to each spouse and may be affected by a death, such as
pensions and Social Security benefits. You’ll also want to talk about
options to boost future income upon the death of a spouse. Do you
have adequate life insurance? Have you considered investments
that can be structured to provide a lifetime income stream? These
are the types of questions you’ll want to answer as you think about
providing adequate income for the partner who outlives the other.
• Leaving a legacy – If you and your spouse haven’t already done
so, take this opportunity to discuss your estate plans. You should
also discuss how, when the time comes, you want to handle any
retirement assets, such as IRAs, that were titled in the deceased
spouse’s name. Estate considerations can be complex and involve
many different aspects of your financial resources. So you and your
spouse need to be “on the same page” with your desires and goals.
Valentine’s Day will come and go quickly. But if you use the occasion to start having the types of discussions described above, you
can create something that will last a lot longer than candy or flowers.

well for problems. This buys you the time you need to contact a
professional. Should you happen to run out of water before the
well is operational, there are water delivery services which can
bring you a supply of water to replenish your storage tank, thereby
maintaining your day-to-day routine while you await repairs. For
homes in remote areas, stored water is also a valuable asset for
firefighters.
Now is an ideal time to consider adding a storage tank to your
well. Then you will be prepared before another Texas summer
takes it’s toll on your well.
Ce
During times of drought, there is a
great deal of concern with the possibility
of wells going dry in the area. Many people are forced to take action when they
no longer have a constant supply of water
to their home. Some have to replace well
pumps, only to find that the old pump
failed due to low water conditions. Others must drill new wells in
order to access a larger supply of water. In most cases, these repairs are unexpected, and time-consuming. During severe drought,
many well service companies are overwhelmed with calls, causing
some families to endure days without a supply of fresh water. A
water storage tank would be helpful to many of these homeowners.
The benefits of a properly installed storage tank are numerous.
These tanks are normally installed near the well so that the well
pump sends the water directly into the storage tank. This removes
much of the back pressure from your well pump so that the workload on the pump is greatly reduced. The water can be sprayed into
the top of the storage tank, eliminating odors which may be present. The water is then re-pressurized by an external pump which
can maintain higher pressure, and is much less costly to repair
or replace than a submersible pump. Protection systems are also
available for both pumps to ensure longevity.
Even on existing storage tanks, an early warning system, such
as a light or alarm, can be installed to activate when the water in
the tank drops to a certain level, indicating the need to check your

So you got a new PC for Christmas? More than likely it looks quite
a bit different than what you are used
to seeing and you may find yourself
a bit lost. So this month I thought I’d
put a list together on what to do to
get your new PC setup.
More than likely your new PC is
running Windows 8, so the first order of business is to restore the start
menu unless you are comfortable with a phone-like, tough screen
interface for your PC. There are two programs, “Classic Shell”
and “Start Menu 8”, either of which will do that for you. Both are
available on the downloads page of my website.
Your PC probably came with a trial of some antivirus program like Norton or McAfee. They are not worth the money and
I suggest you uninstall them. Windows 8 comes with a version of
Defender built in which is the equivalent of Microsoft Security
Essentials, which is what I use for both Windows 7 and 8. Both
Norton and McAfee have removal tools which you can download
and are the best way to uninstall the trial. For Norton, use NRT
and for McAfee use MCPR. Google them and you will find the
download site easily. After running the uninstaller you will need a
reboot. At that point open the control panel, go to the action center
and make sure Defender is turned on for Windows 8 or download
and install Microsoft Security Essentials (MSSE) for Windows 7.
A few other useful programs are cutepdf which will convert
documents and webpages to PDF, 7zip, a free zip compression
utility and OpenOffice. Flash is built-in with Windows 8, but will
need to be installed for Windows 7. You should also download and
install Java, Adobe reader and Adblock. Check my publications
page for the links.
After you have installed these programs, you should then get
the last Windows updates via the control panel and finally have a
look at programs and features to determine if the manufacturer of
the PC has loaded “crapware”. There is a useful program called
Decrapifier to help with this.

Is your list ready?
by Lindley Pond
By now we’ve had a pretty good taste
of winter and are twiddling our thumbs
about what we can be doing before spring
approaches. We’ve still got a few months
to go, but with the much needed rain
we’ve already gotten, things have grown
a lot faster than people are used to at this
time of year.
My suggestion would be to start with a to-do list, not just a wish
list but an honest to goodness “chore” list. Hate the word but love
the outcome as you happily check off items to get set. All yard
tools and machines probably need a good sharpening, cleaning
and, in some cases, the old fuel may have condensation in it which
should be switched out for fresh stuff. Now that your partners in
crime are ready to work, you can tackle pruning of all shrubs and
roses along with tree trimming to raise the canopy, remove the
deadwood and improve the overall health of your trees.
It’s a great time to add compost and get soils ready for new
plantings, whether it be in the flower beds or in a veggie garden.
It’s a great time to continue to start your veggie seedlings in a
greenhouse or under grow lights – fun to see something in the cold
actually emerge new from the soil! Leaves, leaves and more leaves
can all be added to your compost heap after you’ve used some of
what was there from last year.
Now that the hard part is finished, the reward is to continue
your list.. not the to-do list but the What I Want list. Prioritizing
your wishes will help with this phase. Is it to be a great seating area
with a fire pit, a water feature, a butterfly garden, less yard more
fun space.. whatever your wishes are they can all be obtained with
baby steps. We are here to help with any and all, whether it’s the
to-do list or the “want” list. Feel free to call us for a visit. Enjoy the
prep, the end result is always worth it.

Picking the perfect area rug
Do you want to add a little style to
your floor? Area rugs can quickly and
easily give rooms character. They add
warmth to a room, not only taking the
chill off cold floors but also producing
a mood of intimacy.
Questions like how large or small, what color to choose or how
a particular design will fit in with the rest of the décor are usually
just a few of the basic questions to take into consideration when
shopping for a new rug.
To help in the quest for the perfect rug for your home, follow
these tips to make shopping easier:
Take a photo of the room you are decorating to the rug store. It
is easy to get distracted or excited when presented with so many
choices. Using an image as reference will keep you on track. Think
about how the room is used, how much traffic it gets and who will
look at the rug under what lighting.
If the room is already decorated, use the rug to help pick out one
key hue. If you are painting or repapering a room, a color found in
an existing rug can give you inspiration and help bring the room
together. Light-colored rugs make a room feel bigger and dark colors create coziness. But be careful that the pattern of the rug does
not clash with the curtains and existing furniture (consult the room
photo that you have brought with you to the store.)
Select a rug with the best combination of density and fiber. The
denser the pile (with closer tufting or stitches,) the better your rug
will wear. Do not underestimate the importance of padding. It will
by Reba Byrd and Sheri Wisdom
lessen wear and tear on the rug and make vacuuming easier. It will
also absorb the impact of feet and noise. Good padding will allow
you the option of buying a less expensive rug that will wear and
look good longer.
The important thing to bear in mind is that there are no rules and
you can opt for the rug you like the best.
Sheri Wisdom is one of the Design Consultants at Cowgirls and Lace and
Le Ragge Ruggs. Reba Byrd is the owner of Cowgirls and Lace and Le
Ragge Ruggs with locations in Dripping Springs and San Antonio. With
19 years of experience, they specialize in custom window treatments and
