Winter 2014
FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome…
Karen Sutton
Business@Brooklands Chairman
As we come to the end of our third
year of Business@Brooklands, I
reflect on what 2014 has brought
us and highlight what 2015 has in
store…
2014 started very much as 2013
ended; more rain! With nearly 300mm
falling in some areas, it was the wettest
winter on record since 1910 with Surrey
being one of the hardest hit; hundreds of
people are still not back in their homes in
our neighbouring town of Chertsey!
We’ve had another four great events
at Brooklands College, St. George’s Hill
Lawn Tennis Club, Prime Health and
finally this week at Brooklands Museum.
We’ve also seen good growth in the
membership and retention which is great
news!
KRIS COOK
I couldn’t review the year though, without
mentioning RideLondon. What should
have been an incredibly exciting day
didn’t turn out that way. Hurricane Bertha
threw everything she had at us in the
early hours of the 10 August, and for the
twelve hours that followed, leading to
many people having accidents, including
me. What we didn’t expect though, was
tragedy in our own team.
Kris Cook, who was riding for Woking &
Sam Beare Hospices, went out to raise
£500 for his charity but sadly died after
suffering a cardiac arrest at Newlands
Corner. His family were overwhelmed
by the generosity of the public with
donations coming in from friends,
colleagues, fellow Ride 100 cyclists and
Rotary Clubs, even complete strangers
who had all been moved by the story.
LOOKING FORWARD
Moving into 2015, we will kick off with a
big event, bringing Brooklands onto the
national stage! The inaugural National
CSR Awards, inspired by our CSR
Forum, will be hosted by Mercedes-Benz
World on 6 March and will be combined
with our March event. It really is one
NOT to be missed. For more information
about entering an award, or attending the
Showcase exhibition, visit the website at
www.nationalCSRawards.co.uk or see
the items and adverts in this issue.
In September, Business@Brooklands
will host the first Elmbridge Family Fun
Day on the Community Park. It will be a
full jam packed day of fun with something
to do for all ages. For more information,
go to pages 10-11.
Enjoy reading! From all at Business@
Brooklands, we would like to wish
you a Merry
Christmas
and a very
Prosperous
2015!

Lower priced fibre connections
will bring benefits to SMEs
Today the average internet speed
for the business market is 18.7Mb/s
across the UK. Although internet
services have progressed, speeds are
still failing to meet user demand.
With the rise of cloud applications
(e.g. Salesforce), VoIP and interactive
accounting software, the demands of
the SME have changed dramatically.
Adopting online-only applications has
allowed SMEs to cut costs and enjoy
enterprise level applications while running
their businesses on a tight budget, but
often these bandwidth-hungry apps
require far speedier connectivity services.
Thankfully, newer technologies have
come to the fore such as FTTC (fibre
to the cabinet) and FTTP (fibre to the
premises) which enable higher speeds
and reduced prices.
Furthermore, pure fibre connections
are dropping in price. As fibre becomes
more reasonably priced and the
infrastructure is developed,
SMEs will be able to get hold
of accessible, affordable and
speedier connectivity services.
For more information on
their services, call 4D Data
Centres on 020 7183 0608.
Top tips from 4D to get
better internet for less:
• Research – There are many fibre
lines running throughout Brooklands –
it may not just be BT who can supply
you.
• Flexible commercials – Can you
sign for a longer term? You’ll get
better rates.
• Bigger is not always better –
Local providers can offer competitive
rates and great customer service.
• Club together – If fibre is not in your
area you can cut installation costs by
joining forces with other SMEs.
START-UP
The perfect
space to start
your business
According to the
Government Department
for Business, out of the
4.9m UK businesses
registered, 99.9% are
SMEs with less than
250 employees; and
of these, 75% do not
employ anyone beside the
business owner.
An estimated 102,000
‘start-up’ businesses were
registered in 2013, the
highest number in one year
since the survey started in
2000. Yet, a shocking 80%
of those will still fail within 18
months!
This may explain why so
many sole traders, especially
those needing premises to
run online retail businesses,
are turning to a company like
The Storage Pod for a base
to operate from, avoiding
initial commitments such
as long office leases and
contracted amenities such as
telephone and broadband.
AFFORDABLE
With free WiFi, 24 hour
access and a notice period
to cancel of as little as seven
days, The Storage Pod offers
the perfect solution for anyone
wishing to ‘dip their toe’ into
running a small business
without taking a significant
financial risk; some business
owners do this while still
holding down a full time job.
The Storage Pod has the right storage for any business needs
Lionel Smith, Managing
Director of the self-storage
business in Brooklands,
said: “We have over 80
businesses that now trade
from here; a surprising 50%
of our let space. We even
have a photographer who
uses a pod once a month as
a studio!
“We are delighted to be able
to offer an affordable and
relatively risk-free option to
people wanting to branch out
on their own.”
The Storage Pod contains
613 pods on five floors
totalling over 44,000 square
feet, with one entire floor
reserved for open plan and
bulk storage.
The Storage Pod is
currently offering half
price rental to all new
customers for three
months – the perfect way
to start up your start-up!

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Building a
better future
Brooklands College are
widening the offering of
their highly successful and
established engineering
department by opening a
brand new Hybrid Vehicle
and Electrical Engineering
Centre at their Weybridge
Campus this month.
The move has come
as part of the College’s
continued commitment to
providing STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics) learning
opportunities to the local
community.
The need to back STEM
related industries has long
been recognised by the
UK government, with the
Chancellor of the Exchequer
George Osborne recently
quoted as saying ‘Backing
growth in sectors such as
science, technology and
engineering is part of our long
term plan to deliver economic
security and sustainable
growth for a more resilient
economy’.
MUTUAL BENEFIT
Maureen Kilminster, Principal
at the College, said ‘We are
proud to be opening these
new facilities. It is our aim
to be an innovative College,
responsive to meeting local
and regional skills needs to
the mutual benefit of students
and organisations’.
The facility will not only
benefit school leavers
The Brooklands College Hybrid Vehicle and Electrical Engineering Centre
looking to study a STEM
related subject but will also
directly benefit local garages
and vehicle maintenance
centres. From January 2015
Brooklands College will be
offering a two day course
around working safely with,
and maintaining, hybrid
vehicles. The course includes
how to safely handle high
voltage systems and how to
carry out maintenance and
repair activities when working
on hybrid vehicles.

Expert physiotherapists
right on your doorstep
With over 50,000 trained therapists, students and

role in today’s medicine. It can not only help people in
rehabilitation after an injury or surgery, but also those

A Physiotherapist will take a ‘whole person’ approach to

to manage pain and prevent disease through movement and
exercise, manual therapy, education and advice.
INTEGRATED TREATMENT
Prime Health’s expert Physiotherapists believe that ‘hands
on’ therapy should sit at the heart of any treatment plan;
therefore soft tissue massage, joint and nerve mobilisations,
posture education, stretching and strengthening techniques

Health.
In an initial consultation, they will test muscles, tendons,
ligaments, joints, nerves, balance, coordination, strength and
movement patterns in order to identify which structures are
being affected.
Several of the Prime Health team are qualified in
acupuncture and we also have the latest electrotherapy
machines such as Ultrasound, Interferential and TENS

DEVELOPING YOUR BUSINESS SKILLS
Are you A-HEAD
for success?
In the last article we talked about
Clarity. The second dimension to
success is Skillset.
The skills you need for success will
depend on your role. There are some
general skills which all of us would benefit
from and there are also job-specific skills.
My top three success skills are:
• Influencing with integrity – this helps
people buy into your ideas (and you) with
more ease and enables you to: negotiate
better deals; enjoy more constructive
relationships; avoid communication traps
and experience less stress.
• Time management – most people
are under pressure to achieve more in
less time with fewer resources available.
So, being able to manage your priorities,
become outcome-focused and navigate
through the plethora of time bandits
which threaten to derail you is key to your
productivity.
• Decision making – we make more
decisions than we are consciously
aware of. Not deciding is a decision in
itself. However, it is essential to be able
to make sound decisions consciously
which requires critical thinking skills to
brainstorm options and understand the
consequences of each. This way, you
will create more robust decisions with
contingency plans to protect you.
Skills can be underused or overused
– what skills do you have which are not
being used? What skills do you put into
overdrive so they become weaknesses?
And what skills do you have which give
you more flow?
Most people
are under
pressure to
achieve more
in less time with
fewer resources

We support this learning and
development with five Monkey Clubs
that focus on creativity, art, music,
cooking, culture, communication and
languages:
Messy Monkeys – expressive arts
and design
Monkey Moments – storytelling,
communication and language
Monkey Mini-Chef – cooking and
food culture
Monkey Pen Pal – pre-schoolers
write to children in other nurseries
before they meet them at school
Monkey World – arts, music,
languages, IT
We complement our clubs with
weekly extra-curricular activities from
Sports4Kids, Jo Jingles, Click iT! and
TheatreBugs.
We don’t forget mum and dad either!
Monkey Miles, our weekly parent
running club, not only helps us all keep
fit but raises money for the Sam Beare
Hospice.
Dads Day takes place one Saturday
every month – a great opportunity
for dads to spend time with their
little ones. Free tea and coffee, WiFi,
cupcakes, activities… and they even
get to watch their favourite sport on
television.
After the session they all pop next
door to The Ship Hotel for a free drink.

BUILDING A BETTER BUSINESS
A new chapter for Portfolio
Following the acquisition of Surrey
Chauffeurs in March this year we are all
very excited about the progress we have
made, completing much of the necessary
change as we approach the end of the
year.
The last few months have seen a
concerted effort by the entire team to
develop and implement a brand new
booking, despatch and online facility.
This brings Portfolio Executive up to
date with the latest technology, providing
our clients with the most modern and
advanced system currently available. This
will not only provide clients with a true
fully interactive platform but will also pave
the way for a dedicated booking App and
a number of other additions – watch this
space!
PROFESSIONAL SERVICE
We are also very pleased to announce
a new addition to our team. Sarah
Milson-Jones comes to us from
UNIT 7 GLEN COURT, CANADA ROAD
BYFLEET KT14 7JL
Industrial unit to let
543.46 sq m (5,850 sq ft)
Tristar Worldwide Chauffeurs as our
new Operations Director. Sarah will
be working very closely with Amanda
and the rest of the team to provide
our customers with one of the most
professional services available.
With Sarah’s vast operational
experience our emphasis will be on
offering our clients – both existing and
new – the ‘London’ level of technology
and service while maintaining that very
personal touch that our customers have
come to expect.
It’s the next exciting chapter in our
story and we will of course keep you all
updated as things progress.
Unit 7 forms part of Glen Court, a modern development
constructed in approximately 1997. It is situated at the back
of the popular Canada Road estate. This is a single storey
industrial unit which is due to be refurbished during
December/January. The unit will offer mainly open plan
accommodation with ancillary offices. There are two
electrically operated loading bay doors as well as two fire
escape doors in the rear elevation. The front of the unit
has an attractive canopy entrance, leading to a hallway with
ladies and gents W.C. facilities. Within the industrial space
there are further toilet (ladies, gents and disabled) facilities, a
cleaner’s cupboard and a kitchen. The property benefits
from 3 phase electricity and 22 allocated car parking spaces.
The distance to the top of the loading bay door is 3.23 m
(10.59 ft). EPC rating: ‘D’.
Gross Internal Area 543.46 sq m (5,850 sq ft).
A new full repairing/decorating and insuring lease
is available for a term to be agreed. The lease will
exclude the security of tenure and compensation
provisions contained within the Landlord & Tenant Act
1954 Part 2 (as amended). Vacant possession will be
available during February 2015.
£70,000 per annum exclusive.
The building has been elected for VAT.
There is an estate service charge with further details
upon request.
