CELEBRATIONS OF
LIVE, LOVE, SERVE
Did you know that Coopersville United
Methodist Church has a Mission
Statement? Do you know what it is?
Do you know what it means for us as a church?
Starting Sunday, February 1, we will spend three
weeks looking at our mission, and what it means for
us to be “A Community Called to Live in relationship
with Christ, Love like there’s no tomorrow, and Serve
and minister to our community!”
LENT
It’s hard to believe, but the season of Lent is almost
upon us. Lent is the time of year, beginning with Ash
Wednesday, and continuing for six weeks until Easter,
when Christians prepare their hearts, souls, and
minds for the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus
Christ at Easter. This time of preparation includes
prayer, repentance, giving, and self-denial.
As a church family, we will be spending this Lenten
season undergoing “A Reality Check.” Join together
with your church on Sundays through Lent as we take
a serious look at life, the world, and us.
Lent begins on Wednesday, February 18th with an
Ash Wednesday Service at 7pm. The entire
community is invited to join together in a time of
solemn prayer, confession of sins, and a recommitting
of our lives to living as children of God.
ASSISTED HEARING DEVICE
Do you have a hard time hearing what is said in
church? The church has Assisted Hearing Devices.
The devices will be available on a first come first
serve basis and are available from the soundboard
operator in the media room. We ask that you return
the device after the morning service to the media
center.
FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT
Get ready to have fun and fellowship with your
church family! Sunday evening, February 15, CUMC is
hosting a Movie Night at 6pm! Bring your family and
friends, and a snack to share, and come enjoy “The
Lego Movie,” rated PG. It is a great movie for both
kids and adults! You won’t want to miss this great
night with your church family, even if you’ve already
seen the movie!

AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE January 26, there were 28 Presenting donors, 2

service in helping with the Blood Drives. Char Reffeor
SCRIP FUNDRAISER Our SCRIP gift card program is a wonderful fundraiser
for our church. Thank you Gail Holmes for all the work
put into coordinating this program and informing us
about ordering and specials. In 2014, the SCRIP
program brought in $643.15 for our church! The
profits from this program help with camping and
many ministries of our church.
THE GREEN SEASON I hope you have all notice how wonderful our Altar
looks. It is perfect for representing the Green Season
of the United Methodist Church. Green symbolizes
the renewal of vegetation and generally of living
things and the promise of new life. It is used for the
Season of Epiphany up to Transfiguration Sunday
(February 15) and for Ordinary Time between Trinity
Sunday (May 31 - first Sunday after Pentecost) & the
beginning of Advent. Thanks much Catherine Freeland
SHOUT OUT Thank you Kathy Thwaites for stepping up & helping
out with the “Be the Change” Youth overnighter. Your
energy and enthusiasm is always appreciated.
HOSPITALTIY We are very excited to have leadership for the Hospitality team. Thank you Dale Drooger for stepping up
to be the coordinator for the Hospitality Team. Thank
you to Karolyn Holmes for coordinating the Coffee
Hosts. We also have Grace Holmes stepping up to
prepare the communion for the first Sunday of each
month. Thank you all for your time and talents.
SPECIAL MUSIC Thank you so much Stephanie Kehoe for sharing your
love of music with our congregation. You plan the
Oboe with perfection. I take this opportunity to
encourage other to bring special music on a Sunday
during our worship service. Please let Kris in the
office know what Sunday you would like to play/sing/
perform for the congregation.
UNHANGING OF THE GREENS Thank you Pastor Cori, David Thwaites, Jessie Cypret,
Gail Holmes and Pete Stammis for taking down and
packing up the Christmas season.
FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT
Your Finance Committee has continually stated that, as a church, we would strive to not spend more than we
have. And we've said, "Your giving is not about what the church needs, but about what God is calling you to
give to support the ministries of this church." God has called this church to do great things, and we have some
wonderful ministries happening here, with even more coming.
Unfortunately, our pledged income for 2015 is at the lowest level in many years. Last year, we had to dip into
our savings for about $15,000 to pay all of our bills and fund our ministries; leaving about $7000 in usable
savings. We did pay our Ministry Shares in full again, as we have for many years, recognizing the importance of
giving to support the connectional ministries of the larger Church. Paying them in full allows us to continue the
work which God has called us to, as well as to maintain the level of pastor we currently have, and be in good
standing with the Conference.
This year, we have proposed a budget with many cuts. Salaries, maintenance, office expenses, church programs,
and ministry shares have all been reduced to try to meet our income shortfall. If the church is going to continue
ministering in and to this community, increased giving and possible outside sources of revenue will be necessary. We are looking into some of these possibilities, and would welcome other suggestions. Because Pastor
Cori's salary is at the minimum allowable by the Conference, if revenues and giving do not increase, it may
become necessary to ask for a lesser credentialed pastor (such as a local pastor) or even a part-time pastor.
Many great things are happening in our church today because of Pastor Cori's leadership. She was God's answer
to our prayers three years ago. While many of us do not, nor should not agree with her all of the time, when we
look at the complete picture of our church's ministry, she is helping us to live out God's call for our church!
As we all pray for God's guidance and blessings, for all our ministries as well as for our finances, each of us must
look at how we can serve and give to the church. We need to ask the tough questions: 'What is God calling me
to give?' 'Is it more than I am currently giving?' 'Can I volunteer some time at the church cleaning, working in the
office, plowing snow, mowing the lawn, working with the children?' 'Is there some other way I can help to keep
our church growing and remain an integral part of our community?'
The complete budget, along with all financial reports are available in the Church Office. Please be in prayer for
your church, our finances, our ministries, our staff, our people, and this community.
Would you considering giving more to support the ministries of this church? Just $5.00 per week (one cup of
Starbucks, one pack of cigarettes, one McDonalds, or two fewer candy bars) per family could make a huge
difference in our budget".

creating lifelong, life-changing memories for young
people in a safe, fun, and caring environment.
Your child will have the opportunity to look back at
the summer and remember singing camp songs,
sensing the sounds, sights, and smells of nature,
creating new friendships with kids from faraway
places, and discovering an ever-greater love for God in
their hearts. Your child will grow in self-confidence,
resourcefulness, and gratefulness as they encounter a
spiritual awakening that will unfold over a lifetime.
Registration is available online at http://
www.westmichiganconference.org/pages/detail/2237.
The church is willing to help with a portion of the cost
of camp, if you can’t afford the cost on your own.

THE EPIC OF EDEN BIBLE TRAINING CLASS
The Epic of Eden Bible Training Class will meet at
Church on Sundays starting on March 1 for 12 weeks.
Class starts @6PM and goes until 7:30 PM. Class is
led by Pastor Cori. The Nursery will be staffed by
Youth from our church and will provide daycare if
needed. More information on this group is located on
the bulletin board by the Nursery.
Use the sheet on the bulletin board by the Nursery to
sign up for this class and to order a book through the
office. EBooks are also available @seedbed.com
All versions are $22.95.
Soft Cover Orders will be placed on February 16.
HERE IS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK & VIDEO TRAINING.
Does your knowledge of the Old Testament feel like a
grab bag of people, books, events and ideas? How
many times have you resolved to really understand
the OT? To finally make sense of it? In Epic of Eden, Dr.
Sandra Richter clearly and powerfully communicates a
history of God’s redeeming grace, weaving together a
story that runs from the Eden of the Garden to the
garden of the New Jerusalem.
Through text and video teaching, Dr. Richter uses this
12-week study to bring a new dimension to the
history of the ancient Near East, orienting any study
group in time, geography, culture, redemption, and
relevance to today, all without diminishing her
reader’s faith or “dumbing down” the scripture.
Legendary Bible stories take on new life as Dr. Richter
clearly articulates their part of a larger pattern,
revealing an even deeper significance for the tales
individually. The Epic of Eden video training is ideal
for anyone wanting a meaty study of biblical text, as
well as anyone eager for a strategic grasp of the good,
the bad, and the ugly of the Old Testament and how it
relates to God’s activity in the present.
COMMUNION FOR GRAND VALLEY WESLEY FELLOWSHIP
In a spirit of shared ministry and outreach, beginning
this month, our Communion will include a blessing
over an additional bottle of juice and loaf of bread.
Each month, these blessed “elements” of Communion
will be given to Rev. Greg Lawton to share with his
students at the Grand Valley State University Wesley
Fellowship. Please join your church in praying for this
ministry!
3RD ANNUAL PACK IT UP BAKE SALE FUNDRAISER
Jessie Cypret & Sarah Brandt are hosting
the 3rd Annual bake sale for PACK IT UP
during the Business Expo on March 21 at
the high school.
They are looking for people to work at the booth with
them, donate bake goods, help get the word out,
pricing of baked goods, and make signs. Watch for
more information and a signup sheet in late February.
PRAYER CHAIN
Do you have a prayer request to share with your
church family? Would you like to be included
in our phone or email prayer updates?
Contact Carol Pfahler at 837-9036 or email Lorna
Brittain at [email protected].
LITURGIST
You've probably noticed that there have been some
new people involved in our Sunday Morning Worship.
These people are serving in the ministry of Liturgist.
The title "Liturgist" is a traditional word referring to
the person(s) who lead the congregation in readings
during worship. When you sign up to serve in this
ministry, you are offering to help lead our
congregation in worshipping God through the reading
of the morning's scripture, other readings during the
service, and possibly offering prayers.
Anyone can serve as Liturgist, as long as they are
willing to come before the congregation and speak
into a microphone. Liturgists are asked to arrive by
9:30 on Sunday mornings in order to sound-check the
microphone, to run through the scripture, and to
make sure you are calm and prepared for helping to
lead worship. Each week, the scripture reading is
printed out in large font for easier reading, from the
New Living Translation so it coincides with the passage on the screen.
Serving as liturgist is an easy, and wonderful way to
become more involved in the worshipping life of our
church, and to actively serve God and others. You can
sign up for this ministry at SignUpGenius.com, or on
the clipboard in the Fellowship Room. If you have any
questions about serving as Liturgist, how to sign up,
or what other ways you can be involved in your
church, please see Pastor Cori or contact the Church
Office.

ALIVE YOUTH GROUP ASSISTANT
The ALIVE Youth Group is founded on Romans 6:11.
“...count yourselves dead to sin but alive to Christ
Jesus.” They meet on Wednesdays from 6-7:30 pm
and consist of 6th-12th grade students.
We are looking for an adult (over 21) to assist
Pastor Cori (Youth Leader) with the evening events.
They worship through song and prayer, enjoy a hot
meal and then come together to hang out, to learn
about God and life, and yes, even have fun!

MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT FUND
The Coopersville UMC Memorial Endowment is a
permanent fund, which provides perpetual support
for our church. Your gift to the endowment continues
a lasting legacy to Coopersville UMC. Only the interest
from the fund can be spent, not the principal that
anchors the endowment. The interest from the
endowment about 4% can be reinvested or used by
the Trustee Committee for capital improvements on
the building. Administrated by the Coopersville Area
Community Foundation which is an affiliate of the
Grand Haven Area Community Foundation.
Consider honoring your loved ones by giving a gift to
the Endowment Fund.
THE SKIT GUYS WILL BE IN ALLENDALE IN MARCH
March 27, 2015 @ Life Stream Worship Center,
pre-show 7:30pm and main show 8:05.
Tommy Woodard and Eddie James are The Skit Guys.
They have been best friends since high school. Think
of them as the wise guys in class who had everyone
laughing and managed to make a career out of it.
They’ve been teaching God’s word using comedy,
drama and whatever category talking action figures fit
into for over twenty years.
CUMC will purchase tickets on February 23. They will
be $12.50 each, if we order more than 10. The sign
up sheet is on the table in the Fellowship Room.
Make checks out to CUMC and give to Kris in the
office.
