Professional Development Awards for the year 2015. The next deadline for entry is 31st. January

to enhance the skills of potential workers. Applications are invited from practitioners with at least five

Continuing Professional Development Awards are short duration help with training for professionals;
whether by moving towards the attainment of accredited status as conservators, by obtaining tuition to
increase their effectiveness and proficiency in practicing their craft or by developing their creative
skills. The award could be used to assist someone to attend a masterclass, an advanced glass
painting course, to learn about mortars and stonework installation, to seek tuition about glass
chemistry, to shadow a fellow professional to learn a skill they do not already have such as edge
bonding or glass cleaning or whatever else the awardee can demonstrate that s/he needs to learn to
enhance working practices. These awards are particularly aimed at professionals unable to leave their
work for long periods, so they typically enable attendance at short courses or short studio placements
under expert tuition. Each award will offer up to £550.00 for tuition costs and £225.00 subsistence
while learning. You can obtain application details at
Website: www.worshipfulglaziers.com/Professional_Development-19.htm or from the Awards

Understanding Furnace Design and Glass Technology with Richard Golding. Richard has been
involved with glass for over 30 years since he set up Okra Glass in 1979. He is renowned for his
efficient furnaces, glass recipes and designs, use of iridescence, reduction, colour and surface
decoration. In 2010 Richard left Okra and opened his eighth glass studio and first ever gallery, Station
Glass, in a Victorian Station building at the end of a preserved railway line in Shenton, Leicestershire,
England. The Station was far too small to fit in traditional glassmaking equipment so Richard worked
with Merlyn Farwell of PIElectronics to design and build a combined furnace, lehr and gloryhole, the
COMBO. The COMBO is now run on electricity and makes glassmaking affordable and possible in a
very small space. Richard`s glass is highly collectible and features in museums, galleries and private
collections around the world. Originally inspired by artist`s such as Carder, Galle, Daum and Tiffany,
Richard`s work at the Station is pushing back the boundaries even further, with new pieces involving
intricate layered, surface decoration, lampworking, cutting and colour combinations. Richard was
involved in the Stourbridge Twenty Twelve Portland Vase Project where he used his own glass
recipes to achieve the right expansion and colour and then blew the blanks for the recreation of the
Portland Vase. As well as running a successful studio Richard periodically runs courses on iridising,
furnace design and glass technology at his studio in Leicestershire and taught glass technology and
colour on a 6 day Masterclass at Corning Museum of Glass in America. Richard Golding, Station

*North Lands Creative Glass Master Classes & Skill Classes 2015:
March Skills Classes:
03/03/1505/03/15: Lamp Working Skills Class with Ian Pearson. 3 – 5 March. Cost: £300.00
(includes light lunch). Ian Pearson will lead a three day introduction to the art of lamp working (using
gas/oxygen torches to blow, manipulate and join glass tube and rod). You can expect a friendly and
informal but hard working atmosphere with the focus on helping you to experiment and develop skills
which you can apply in your future work. Ian has been practicing the skill known as lamp working
since 1961, and is an acknowledged master of the craft bringing a mix of outstanding technical
knowledge and creative flair. For many years a scientific glass blower creating highly complex
laboratory equipment, Ian now uses his blend of ancient craft and modern technology to make art
objects and gifts at his studio Glass Creations in Thurso. This class is suitable for all skill levels and
abilities.
23/03/1527/03/15: Wild Engraving Workshop: Skills Class with Heather Gillespie. 23 – 27 March.
Cost: £400.00 (includes light lunch). This Skills Class moves engraving out of the studio and into the
landscape. Using her experience from the Forest of Glass Residency in 2013, Heather will encourage
her class participants to take inspiration directly from nature and the local scenery of Lybster and
transfer it onto glass by mark making there and then. There will also be the opportunity to experiment
with print making direct from your glass samples. ‘Past participants found the whole experience free
and expressive. The aim of this class is to encourage us to get out of our comfort zones, experiment,
enjoy working outside, and be a part of something unique and special.’ Heather. No experience
necessary.
July Master Classes:
15/07/1523/07/15: Stained Glass: The Final Frontier Master Class with Judith Schaechter. 15 - 23
July. Fee: £900.00 (includes evening meals). In this course, participants will work with layered flash
glass to create one or two panels of stained glass. Various methods of creating imagery on glass,
such as painting, sandblasting, engraving and diamond filing will be demonstrated and exploration of
alternative options is encouraged. Participants will assemble one or two small panels. This class will
also delve into the elusive creative process in the form of discussion.
Glass Unknown: Experimentation and Discoveries in the Hot Shop Master Class with Maria Bang
Espersen and Max Syron. 18 - 23 July. Fee: £655.00. (includes evening meals). For this 6 day class
we will put aside all presumptions we might have about the material glass and approach it in ways
one would not have thought possible. We will build up a new understanding of glass by investigating
its material possibilities through playful experiments. The process of discovery and learning from the
glass itself will be the focal point, rather than an emphasis on final objects. Working in and out of the
hot shop, we will let go of traditional glass-making concepts, creating and following new paths of
inquiry. We will explore ephemeral, time-based, and performative aspects of glass as well as
concepts such as control, value, and experience. This class is open to anyone with a curiosity for the
unknown and the willingness to break some glass. This is an experimental class and we will not be
teaching any technical skills. You will however, learn how to gather and handle a small amount of hot
glass. For larger amounts, some assistance is available. All levels are welcome but a little experience
in hot glass techniques can be beneficial.
August Master Classes:
26/08/1503/09/15: Towards Purpose – kiln-formed glass, cold glass and other stuff… This class
explores the territory between design and making, purpose and process master Class with Angela
Thwaites. 26 August – 3 September. £900.00 (includes evening meals). We will be taking a focussed
and purposeful approach using design and making processes to create 3D glass outcomes. As well
as material knowledge and skills with glass there will be an emphasis on design development. The
area surrounding North Lands is an important source of departure points for idea generation so we
will be going out from the workshops on research journeys. The class will be led by Angela, supported
by a cold working expert, and a designer interested in exploring glass. We will discuss and guide the
purpose and development of your projects and you will develop skills and confidence working with
specialist glass processes. There will be visits, demonstrations, presentations and group discussions
to facilitate your individual ideas and practical exploration. During the 9 days, there will be an
opportunity to experience hot glass through a mutual student swap with the concurrently running hot
glass master class led by James Maskrey. There will also be one day midway through when you will
be able to make arrangements for further exploring the locality. You will carry out a range of
considered experiments in material and bring one idea to a clear conclusion. We will be working on a
modest scale to enable this conclusion to be at a high level of resolution and finish. You will be
expected to give a 5 minute visual presentation to introduce yourself to the group within the first
couple of days and to show the journey of your project at the end of the class. Classes run from 09:00
– 17:30 and participants can work in the studios up until 22:00.
26/08/1503/09/15: Narrating Process Master Class with James Maskrey. 26 August – 3 September.
£900.00 (includes evening meals). The main aim of this workshop is to cultivate skills and develop
narrative for participants’ work. Using our technical abilities, sourced objects, images, or text we will
search for meanings in our pieces. These could be imagined, they could be factual, but at the heart of
the process will be making and story-telling. We will concentrate on material, process and idea. Using
and developing traditional glass-blowing skills, compiled materials and our combined imaginations we
will celebrate these artefacts to spin tales of personal experience, historical fact or elaborate hoax.
We will aim to push ourselves through enriching our glass techniques and developing original ideas to
produce pieces of work embracing both skill and narrative. During the 9 days, there will be an
opportunity to experience expert guidance for cold working glass through a mutual student swap with
the concurrently running master class led by Angela Thwaites. There will also be one day midway
through when you will be able to make arrangements for further exploring the locality.

The focus of this three-day masterclass is to advance participants’ professional and technical
capabilities in the hot-glass studio. Focussing on the fundamentals of traditional glass-blowing
techniques, Ondrej will help you refine your skills and help you create your own designs and products.
The programme will concentrate on basic-material processes to enable you to become more efficient
in handling hot-glass and blowing that perfect quick bubble to suit your needs. You need to have
some glass blowing experience to fully benefit from this course. During the class there will be skills
and technique demonstrations and lots of opportunities to really develop your practical skills. You will
have time to discuss your designs and ideas with Ondrej and to apply your newly honed skills!
Ondrej Novotný is the youngest son of internationally renowned glass maker Petr Novotný, who was
one of the pioneers of glass studio-movement in the eighties. Ondrej started glassmaking at the age
of fourteen. He eventually decided to study glass professionally at the Novy Bor glass school and
started working as an apprentice in the glass trade. After finishing his studies (2004), he travelled
between America and Europe gaining valuable experience and developing his skills. In 2010, Ondrej
started working as a teaching assistant for Martin Janecky who completely changed his way of
looking and working with glass. Recently, he has worked for various artists and designers in The
Netherlands, The Czech Republic, Japan, USA and the UK. Ondrej has a very distinct set of
aesthetics - vivid colours, symmetry and balance are part of his minimal approach to glass.

Keith Seybert. Duration: 1 Day. Participants: 6. Cost: €220.00. This course will introduce you to the
potential of molten glass as a creative material through the process of “Hot” casting into sand moulds.
You will have the opportunity to ladle glass straight from the furnace and pour into prepared “open
faced” sand moulds made with found and sculpted objects. This is the most direct method to create
your own solid sculptural forms in glass. No previous glass-working experience is required. Students
come with: Participants bring in their own objects to press in the sand. Appropriate footwear is a must:
leather boots preferred, leather shoes acceptable.
30/05/1531/05/15: Sat 30th. - Sun 31st. May 2015. MC2 Sand Casting In Bronze and Aluminium.
Tutor: Kate Oram. Duration: 2 Days. Participants: 8. Cost: €280.00. Discover the ancient technique of
sandcasting, see examples of what you can make, learn how to make a master pattern and then cast
it in bronze or aluminum and then how to finish it. Advice on suitable patterns (flat-backed or two-part,
with no undercuts) will be emailed to you. Everyday and found objects (bones, shells, nuts,
household items) can lend themselves nicely to moulding, as well as your original sculpted patterns.
You will be working with aluminium all weekend and then in the last afternoon you will have one
bronze pour. Bronze allocation is 3kg each, after that you will have to pay €15 a kg if you piece is
larger. Students come with: sturdy boots, a simple pattern (no undercuts). Beginners to intermediate.

*Gas Kiln For Sale – Hoaf Speedburn 2 – 70cms x 100cms - £750.00.
This propane gas kiln is for sale as we no longer use it. It is exceptionally fast and heats evenly, it can
be up to temperature in 6 minutes. For any additional information or if you are interested in
purchasing this kiln please contact Jane Bayliss by Email: [email protected] or
Tel: 01224 791 363. The kiln was in working order when we last used it however we would
recommend that the buyer has it set up and serviced by a competent person before starting it up as it
uses propane gas fuel. Please note that there are no electronic controls included in the sale. There is
a solenoid that will go with the kiln to fit on one of the valves but it is so long since we used it that we
cannot remember how it works. Due to the weight of this kiln the buyer must arrange own collection,
we will give as much assistance with this as we can (i.e. helping to load the kiln onto a couriers van
etc). The kiln is a few years old, we cannot remember when it was bought. A new kiln like this would
cost several thousand pounds new, however to make the space we are needing we are looking for
£750.00 for it. This is what the manufacturer says about this kiln model: "The HOAF Speedburn II is a
gas kiln in order to bend, decorate, stain and transform glass. It makes use of infrared radiation
elements which bring about a quick heating of the glass in the kiln. The kiln is equipped with a high
grade thermal insulation so that the heat in the kiln will be utilised fully." Have a look at the
manufacturers website for this model (which does not seem to have changed much over the years) by

*Press Release: - Cambridge Glass Fair Now @ Knebworth House, 22/02/15.
Specialist Glass Fairs has an important and exciting announcement to make about the relaunch of the
Cambridge Glass Fair which will take place at Knebworth House on Sunday 22nd February 2015.
The fair will now be an annual event at its prestigious new home which we are confident is destined to
become a popular venue with both exhibitors and visitors alike.
Knebworth House is set in parkland providing an impressive backdrop to the fair which will take place
in the barn complex, which comprises two 400-year old tithe barns complemented by two purposebuilt modern barns, all positioned around a central courtyard.
The venue benefits from a very good, easily accessible location, being just 29 miles from London and
situated directly off the A1(M) at J7, Stevenage. It is also well signed in its own right. Stevenage can
be reached by train from King’s Cross or Cambridge and is also on the East Coast Line from Leeds,
York etc. There is on-site licensed catering and plenty of free parking. There will be the usual in-fair
exhibition of a special collection of glass, this time featuring the work of Peter Wheeler for Whitefriars
Glass. Our exhibitors focus on bringing a great and varied selection of their most desirable and
collectable items to the fair, and because they are specialists in their subject, visitors can be assured
of benefiting from their experience and passion. Glass from all periods and genres will be offered for
sale: from fine quality antiques to Continental high design; from retro collectables to pressed glass
and paperweights; from jewellery to Georgian drinking glasses.
Contemporary studio glass is another field of great interest to collectors and is always well
represented at our fairs by a number of highly skilled glass artists showing their own work, from hand
blown cameo and graal pieces through to sculpture, kilnforming, engraving, pate de verre and
lampwork. We are delighted to be able to bring you this new event and hope that it will prove to be as
special and popular as the Cambridge Glass Fair always was in the past. We look forward to seeing
you there in February. For further information please visit Website: www.cambridgeglassfair.com or
Mob: 07887 762 872. Open from 10.30am until 4.00pm, admission is £5 with free entry to
accompanied children under 16. Knebworth House, Stevenage SG1 2AX.

Elisabeth Johnson, International Festival Of Glass Project Director said: “We’re very excited about
Matt’s appointment. He has a hard act to follow, and we would like to thank Michelle enormously for

is unique in offering a wide and comprehensive range of facilities in stone, metal casting and
fabrication, hot glass, ceramics, woodwork, digital and traditional print, and mouldmaking, in which

exhibition, or specific outcomes, during or at the end of the period. These residencies are not funded.
If successful a formal letter of offer will be issued inviting the artist to work at the Sculpture Centre
during the coming year. The letter will outline all the supports provided and minimum costs required to
undertake the residency as well as specific acknowledgment of the value and quality of the artistic
undertaking. Residencies are open to all artists based in Ireland. Approximately 50% of residencies
will be offered to foreign nationals and artists based overseas. There is no application form and
submissions are in the form of a Residency Proposal. For information about the potential costs of the
