Australia Awards Scholarships in Cambodia
Level of study
Australia’s international development assistance in
Cambodia aims to contribute to the sustainable development
of Cambodia.
Australia Awards Scholarships
Australia Awards Scholarships are prestigious international
awards offered by the Australian Government to the next
generation of global leaders for development. Through study
and research, recipients develop the skills and knowledge to
drive change and help build enduring people-to-people links
with Australia.
Applicants will be assessed for their professional and
personal qualities, academic competence and, most
importantly, their potential to impact on development
challenges in Cambodia.
Applications are strongly encouraged from women, people
with disability and those working in the area of disability, and
people working for the majority of time in the provinces.
Australia Awards Scholarships are open to applicants from
the public sector, non-government organisations and the
private sector.
These Scholarships are long-term awards providing citizens
of Cambodia with opportunities to obtain postgraduate
qualifications including Master level and in exceptional cases
PhD level at an Australian tertiary institution.
Australia Awards Benefits
Australia Awards Scholarships are offered for the minimum
period necessary for the individual to complete the academic
program specified by the Australian education institution,
including any preparatory training.
Scholarship recipients will generally receive the following:

a one off establishment allowance on arrival

full tuition fees
•
contribution to living expenses
•
introductory academic program
•
Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of the
Scholarship
•
supplementary academic support and
•
fieldwork allowance
(for research students only or Master by Coursework with
a compulsory research component).
Priority fields of study
Australia Awards Scholarships will be offered to outstanding
individuals to study in areas that will contribute to economic
growth and poverty reduction in Cambodia. For the 2016
intake there will be a particular focus on: Infrastructure,
Agriculture, Health, Education Management, Trade and
courses from a range of disciplines that will help scholars in
their work to reduce Violence against Women.
Scholarships will not be offered for other general
management degrees, such as a Masters of Business
Administration.
For the 2016 intake, Australia Awards Scholarships will be
open to candidates working in the Royal Government of
Cambodia, non-government organisations, civil society
organisations and those working in the private sector.

Special conditions
The application process
In addition to these basic eligibility requirements,
candidates from Cambodia must also meet the following
country specific conditions:
Online applications

Possess a Bachelor degree considered equivalent to an
Australian Bachelor degree (for Master level applicants)
or possess a Master degree considered equivalent to an
Australian Master degree (for PhD level applicants).

In the case of applicants applying for an Australia Award
at Master level, preference will be given to applicants
who do not already have a Master degree from another
country.
•

Master level applicants must possess advanced English
skills (IELTS – or equivalent - of 5.5 with no band less
than 5.0) subject to testing which can be undertaken after
applications have been submitted, but before shortlisting
for interview. PhD level applicants must possess an
IELTS – or equivalent - of 6.5 with no band less than 6 at
the time of application.
All applicants, whether from Open or Public categories,
must have completed a minimum of two years (24
months) full time work experience by 31 January 2015.
If a government official has NOT completed 24 months
within a Ministry/Agency but has met the eligibility for the
Open category, that official can apply under the Open
category. However, they are then not entitled to the terms
and conditions applicable to awardees under the Public
category (i.e. continuation of salary during pre-departure
training and while studying overseas and return to a
position within the Ministry on completion of the study etc.).
Public sector employees are encouraged to check with
their Ministry and consider the implications carefully before
applying under the Open category.

All applicants must be continuously resident in Cambodia
for the 24 months prior to the application opening date.
Short absences related to employment, professional
development or holidays are permitted.
Failure to declare previous study undertaken, irrespective
of whether completed or incomplete; or undertaken within
Cambodia or another country, will result in applications
being ruled ineligible and applicants will be barred from
applying for an Australia Award in future rounds.

Applications or supporting documents received after this
date will not be considered.

well before the closing date. The online application facility
(OASIS) experiences peak usage in the days leading up to
the closing date and applicants may experience delays.

Disadvantaged applicants
Women, people working the majority of time in the
provinces and people with disability are strongly
encouraged to apply.
Supporting documents
Applicants must submit with their application all of the
relevant supporting documents listed in the Australia
Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook and those required
to meet the specific requirements for Cambodia. If the
supporting documents are not provided, the application is
incomplete and will be ruled ineligible. Documents do not
have to be certified at the time of application.
All previous study undertaken must be included in the
application including any overseas or incomplete
qualifications.
Applicants must select courses that align with their
experience.

In most cases, a minimum IELTS of 6.5 with no band less
than 6 is required for admission to an Australian
university. Selected Master candidates who have not met
this requirement are required to attend up to 12 months
of full time preparatory training in Cambodia prior to
departure to Australia. This pre-departure training is
compulsory and full time. Awardees are not permitted to
undertake employment during this study period.

During the pre- departure training period, a monthly
stipend is paid: $140 per month for Phnom Penh based
awardees and $180 per month for those based outside of
Phnom Penh.

Outcomes
All applicants will receive notification as to whether they
have been offered an Australia Awards Scholarship by
August 2015. The Scholarship is provisional until the
minimum English language requirement of an IELTS of 6.5
with no band less than 6 is met.
