Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:
It had been looming for at least ten years, and people kept
hoping that Fr. Joseph Retzel could hang on until replacements would arrive. Jesuits had been serving the mostly
Native American population in three parishes on the Fort
Belknap Reservation in central Montana for 127 years
from their mission center at Hays, Montana. But the replacements did not arrive, and so on Monday I heard from
our Provincial that the Jesuits would be leaving Hays and
the Bishop would be coming up with some kind of plan to
provide services in the future.
PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS

11:00 AM COFFEE HOUR CANCELLED!
My sister and brother-in-law, as devout Catholics as one
could find, had three sons. None of them became priests.
Their four children, also devout, had eight sons, and only
one of them even considered becoming a priest, but didn’t. How many of you have held up the priesthood as a
high ideal for your children or grandchildren, or encouraged any of them to consider the priesthood? Behind these
is the ultimate question, “Why not?”
In Christ, Fr. John
St. Vincent de Paul …

WE ARE MISSING THE R/E KEY #1 ~
If you have forgotten to return it, or know where it is,
please return it as soon as possible to the parish office!
There is great sadness in the Oregon Province that it has
come to this. But Fr. Retzel, 88 years old in the summer,
can no longer serve as pastor and there is no one to take
his place. Our sadness is nothing compared to the sense of
abandonment that the native population must feel.
They will be asking, as have so many Catholics in closed
and shuttered parishes throughout the United States and
Europe, “Why us? Why did it have to come to this?” The
answer comes in the form of another question, “How
many sons have you sent to the priesthood or the Society
of Jesus over the past 127 years?” And that is the same
question asked of each of us in these times of priest shortages.
