Pastor Bill’s Bytes…
Our Vision is to lead all persons into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
Our Church Council devoted a day late last summer to wrestle
with the question of how best to evaluate and adjust our ministry activities and deploy all our resources to fulfill this vision.
And we decided that God is calling us as a church to excel in
these areas or ministries in order to do this: Worship; Spiritual
Growth; Family Ministries; and Outreach.
We are moving into one of the holiest times of the year, the
season of Lent, and we are offering a number of opportunities
to take new, systematic steps to grow in your relationship with
Jesus Christ. In this month, we recall the life of our Lord Jesus, who, because of the unconditional and sacrificial love of
God, came to dwell among us to show us what God is like and
to offer himself up on the cross to restore us to relationship
with God.
Our preaching series will explore Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount,
from Matthew, chapters 5 through 7, in which Jesus introduces
his followers to the Kingdom of God (the reign of God), its
character and characteristics, and God’s call to each of us to
put on the character of God and live as those who bear God’s
image. Again, this year, you will have an opportunity to participate in devotional study and online conversation, following
the Lenten theme. If you need quiet time to meditate on God’s
word and your relationship with Jesus Christ, we encourage
you to come to the sanctuary on Wednesdays at noon for a quiet time of reflection, as our organist, Dr. Lynda Hakken will
play reflective music on the organ.
Our special worship opportunities will be our Ash Wednesday
service of repentance, imposition of ashes and Holy Communion February 18; our Maundy Thursday service of Holy Communion on April 2; and our Good Friday Tenebrae Service on
April 3. All of these worship opportunities will be at 6:30 p.m.
Our hope is that in this season, you will take a new step
growing in your relationship with Jesus Christ. Perhaps it will
involve immersion in study and reflection on the Sermon on
the Mount, or a new spiritual practice. Our prayer is that it will
draw you closer to Him.
Your servant for the sake of Jesus, Pastor Bill

Scrip Update
Thanks to all those who have participated in the Scrip Program! So far in 2015 we have raised over $218 for the general operating expenses of the church! Orders are due on
the 1st and 15th of each month. Put the order form/check
in the collection plate or drop them off in the church office.
Parsonage PROJECT
I would like to thank the congregation for your input regarding the best use of our parsonage
in the days ahead. As many of you know the church approved $50,000.00 of repair and renovations to the dwelling so the parsonage could be offered as part of the financial package to
our new pastor. The repairs include energy efficacy items along with normal maintenance of a
100 year old historical home. The work will be contracted out to professional companies that
have already submitted bids so our dedicated trustees and members aren't trying to complete
another time intensive project. These improvements will have to be completed by the summer
when the pastor will take the new position with our church.
We have a very generous congregation and I would like to thank those of you that offered to
support the parsonage financially in your initial email comments. It is our personal dollars
that will set the tone to make these special renovations possible for our pastor and the
church family. We are starting a quiet giving period where members may write checks made out
to our church with the word parsonage written on the lower left memo line. If you would like
to make a gift in another way please let the church know that the money is designated toward
the parsonage renovation. This will allow us to put your designated gift in the appropriate
building fund line item for immediate use. We are blessed to have so many serving individuals and this is another time when we prayerfully have to trust God to help us through this
process.
As other plans are developed toward the completion of the parsonage we will do the best we
can to communicate those with you. This is an exciting time for our church and it is great
to be a part of God's team!
Thanks!
Sincerely, Ray Reasland

Church Council Kicks Off New Year
Church Council held its first meeting of 2015 on Thursday, January 15 in the Common Ground. New council members Jo Nowak-Thompson (Recording Secretary), Kim Ott (At Large), Trey Holets (Youth), and
Sue Pisarik (SPRC) were welcomed by Ruth Miller, new Council Chair. We currently have 25 voting members of our council representing all facets of our church life. We welcome all members of our congregation
to join us if they wish. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in the Common
Ground.
The Methodist Book of Discipline describes church council as the executive agency of our church’s charge
conference and in between meetings of charge conference, our council’s role is to guide and further the ministry of UMCMV. Our most important role is to be work with our pastors, our ministry teams and committees to further our mission and vision.
UMCMV VISION: “To lead all persons into a growing relationship
with Jesus Christ.”
UMCMV MISSION: “Making disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world.”
Council spent time at the first meeting of the year discussing how to
hold up and further the work of the Four Pillars our church stands on:
Worship, Spiritual Growth, Outreach and Family Ministry. We
looked at our current ministry teams to see which ministry team’s mission and work might naturally fit under which pillar. Some fit under
several. We invite congregation members to join us this year as we
continue this work. If you have an interest in working with a pillar
group, please let our pastors or a council member know. We would be
happy to include you!
Financial Secretary, Dick Jacob, gave a short summary of where we ended 2014. Thanks to several very
generous people who made additional donations at the end of the year to reduce our deficit, we ended the
year with a small deficit of $2,500 -considerably less than the $52,000 debt we had in August. We are very
grateful. Chair of the Finance Committee, Jean Schroeder, made a motion to approve the 2015 church budget ($385,623.60), which was approved by council. This budget is $15,634.12 under our 2014 church budget.
Truman Jordan reported from the Generosity Team that we currently stand at 89 pledges for 2015.

Understanding the Immigration Process: Gabi’s Journey
Time for Letters of Support for Gabi
Ann Naffir, United Methodist JFON attorney, has informed Amy and Gabi Guardado that it is time to
begin gathering letters of support for Gabi’s application for permanent United States residency.
She has indicated that letters will be welcome from anyone who knows Gabi: friends, family, churches,
neighbors, co-workers, etc.
She has also sent guidelines for the letters, including information that must be included such as the writer’s name, address, phone number; the date of the letter; an explanation of how the writer knows Gabi; an
original signature; etc. The Peace-Justice Ministry Team is preparing a Guidelines Information Sheet that
will be available soon for anyone in the congregation who would like to write a letter.
All letters will be gathered in our church office and sent in one packet to the JFON attorney who will
review them to be sure all the necessary information is included. Then they will be sent into the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Office, along with Amy’s statements as his wife and other necessary forms.
We will soon be offering some times for people to meet at the church and write letters together, in case
there is apprehension about doing everything appropriately.
We are now entering Step 2 of Gabi’s journey! That is exciting news!

UMCMV Conversations
Living The Gospel Live thru
Lent 2015
Like Advent, Lent is a time of preparation, however, it is a very different kind of preparation. For many, Lent is the season of faith where
our heart is laid wide open. We become exposed to the unworthiness
that we begin to feel as we contemplate the significance of God's sacrifice...once and for all...for each of us. There is no greater expression of
love than seen in the journey to the cross. It is a journey that Christ
made knowingly and as willingly as the human Jesus would permit
God's son.
Faith is a journey in and of itself. It is also like the seasons. We are on
fire, we are subdued; we are direct and on point, we are lost. No matter where you are in your faith journey, being in conversation with fellow Christians is the most rewarding opportunity you can accept. Will
you join us in our conversation?
Conversations is a convenient way of sharing the thoughts you have during your time of devotion. Together, we
share the intimacy of a beautiful devotion, on our own, at our time. [email protected] gives you a direct way of offering a word, a response, a question or a lament and to begin the affirmation that you aren't
alone. Pick up a copy of our Lenten devotion guide in the Narthex beginning February 8th. Send an email to this
address and you will begin a new journey we promise you will find most rewarding.

Happy Valentine’s Day Month! Here are a few
of our favorite scripture on “Love”:
Whoever does not love does not know God, because
God is love.1 John 4:8
If I speak in the tongues of men or
of angels, but do not have love, I
am only a resounding gong or a
clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift
of prophecy and can fathom all
mysteries and all knowledge, and if
I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am
nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to
the poor and give over my body to
hardship that I may boast, but do
not have love, I gain nothing. 1
Corinthians 13: 1-3

Endowment update Fourth quarter 2014
The church’s endowment funds, most of which are managed by the Iowa United Methodist Foundation, earned a
modest return in 2014, which was not unexpected, given
the mixed nature of market returns last year and the current
very low interest rates available on investments. The balance of all the church’s endowment funds ended the year
at about $185,000.
The Endowment Ministry Team will recommend a distribution of some of the profit on our investments to the
Church Council at its March meeting. The Council approves the distribution and decides how it will be used to
further the ministry of the church.
The Endowment Ministry Team gratefully accepts bequests and other legacy gifts from members and friends of
the church. A gift to endowment “keeps on giving,” since
the principal of the endowment is never spent; only a portion of the income is distributed, so that the endowment
funds can support the church in perpetuity, leaving a legacy to our children’s children. Endowment is forever!

Mission Minute for the Circuit Rider
The Blanket Ministry Team Needs YOU!
A new ministry team at UMCMV centers on showing God's love through the warmth of a
blanket. Remember a year ago when this congregation tied 24 blankets in 10 days? From
that enthusiasm, the Blanket Ministry has been born!
The Blanket Ministry team wants to involve everyone who would like to participate, with a
goal of tying 100 blankets this year. Anyone, of any age, who can tie a knot can tie a blanket! There are many ways to participate:
-
praying for this ministry and the recipients of the blankets
cutting out coupons for fleece
cutting fabric
tying blankets (individuals, groups, families, committees, Sunday School classes, etc.)
printing the prayer that will accompany each blanket
delivering fabric to those who would like to tie a blanket at home
delivering blankets when they are completed
contributing financially to the Blanket Ministry fund ($15-20 will buy a blanket)
donating fleece (2 lengths of coordinating fleece fabrics, 2 yards each)
In the beginning, the blankets will be donated to the Mission of Hope, where a great need
for blankets exists. However, the Blanket Ministry team would be happy to know of additional opportunities to donate blankets as an outreach ministry of our church. The purpose
of the blanket is to let the recipient know they are loved by us, but especially by God, in all
circumstances.
Questions? Want to know how you or your group can start on a blanket? Call Jackie Wallace: 319-895-6686

Adult Education Opportunities
Dick Peters’ Chapel Class: The Acts of the Apostles
For a history teacher, the book of Acts is the most exciting book in the Bible! Now is your chance to study
this wonderful history and testimony written by Saint Luke. Saint Luke was the only gentile to author a New Testament book. Of course, I would like to have you come each Sunday, but each class will stand on its own; so
please come when your schedule allows. We’ll study the conversion, travels, and preaching of Saul (Paul) and
certainly Peter and the Holy Spirit. This will be the history of the early church – we’ll see why we should be so
thankful for these pioneer teachers and leaders. Now is the time to read the book of Acts and make plans for you
and family to come to Sunday School. We will also read from Mr. Wesley’s translation of Acts and from several of
his sermons. Naturally, we will make time for an examination of Christmas and Easter. The class will meet in the
Chapel, just beyond the little kitchen and east of the Common Ground. Bless your hearts; see you Sunday school - Dick Peters
Danforth Class: Applying teachings of Jesus
The Danforth group meets in the balcony Danforth Room during the Sunday school hour. The group focuses on
applying the teachings of Jesus to the transformation of our lives and removing barriers to justice and peace. Leadership of the class rotates among members. The first book to be read will be selected by the group when they convene this fall. If you enjoy common readings and lively discussions and yearn to know how to leap from Biblical
time and space to 2014, this is the study group for you!
“The Story”
The Story, NIV (Amazon.com) group will meet each Sunday during the traditional Sunday School hour in the Library directly off Fellowship Hall. Our group will use this version of God's story, written to demonstrate the continuity of God's relationship with His people. We will be centering our discussion on New Testament Scripture and
the range of interpretation that exists as we come together in conclusions for its impact on our lives. Best described
as God's love sent for us all, the New Testament doesn't throw away the Old but rather redefines it and refocuses
God's plan for humanity through His lens rather than ours. If you want to know more, be more and love more, this
is the study group built for you and we'll be waiting for you to join. All our welcome no matter the amount of your
experience, confidence and knowledge. This is a discussion and a time to grow together in His Word. “The Story”
group will meet each Sunday during the traditional Sunday School hour in the Old Library, Classroom off of Fellowship Hall.
Stephen Ministry
Do Stephen Ministers care for people outside of our congregation?
Yes. Stephen Ministers often provide care for people in the broader
community—relatives, friends, and coworkers of congregation members; nonmembers whom the congregation serves; as well as military
personnel and their families. This is a powerful way that Stephen Ministry can enhance and expand a congregation’s outreach.
Prayer: God, almighty protector, we ask you to walk along side of the hurting and the ill, the sad
and the lonely. We ask you to put into our hearts a patience and love that will make us realize with
fellow Christians by our side that you are with us. Let us know your love is all around us and help
us to continue this blessed ministry of Stephen Ministry.
