FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR B) - February 1, 2015
To millions of Australians, Tour de
France winner Cadel Evans is not your
average Aussie-bloke-next-door. But to
our family, he is. You see, Cadel, his
wife Chiara and their son Robel have
spent three months living next door
each summer for the past 10 years For
those three months, away from the
enormous enterprise and immense
pressure of the European cycling tour,
Cadel has retreated to the quiet,
beachside life on the Victorian coast at
Barwon Heads and become part of the
neighbourhood.
When the chain comes off a bike, you
go to see Cadel; he’s the cycling expert.
Well, that’s what one of our daughters
did not long after he moved in. He was
happy to help although he told her:
“I’ve never seen such a rusty bike.”
Cadel is the most single-minded,
determined, committed sports person
I’ve met in watching, interviewing,
writing and talking about sports stars in
nigh on 40 years. But he is first and
foremost a neighbour and that’s how I
think of Cadel – bloke next door first,
cycling legend second.
I’ve simply been reminded of his
occupation every morning when the
garage door goes up at eight o’clock
and he pedals off for a training ride. I’m
in my pyjamas picking up the Addy
from the driveway and he’s in the BMC
lycra and on the bike. While I don’t
mind Cadel seeing me in the PJs when
he leaves, I try to be out of them by the
time he gets back.
Ian Cover, “Geelong Advertiser”, Thurs.
Jan. 29
In Thursday’s “Advertiser”, Ian Cover wrote about his next-door neighbour, Tour
de France winner Cadel Evans. It made for fascinating and engaging reading. His
observation about the neighbour he described as “the most single-minded,
determined, committed sports person I’ve met” is a most impressive accolade.
Then again, given he was describing the winner of what is arguably the most
gruelling, arduous and challenging sporting event in the world, it’s hardly
surprising that words of such high admiration were deserved in describing “the
bloke next door”.
There’s a chance (though hopefully not a significant one) that this week-end’s
“Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race” may provide some inconvenience for
Geelong residents and visitors (including those attending St. Mary’s!) since parts
of the cycling road track are to be periodically closed to car and pedestrian traffic.
But that should be a very small price to pay for the honour and value of Geelong
hosting this major event. (Though there has been a controversy of sorts around
the name of “Melbourne” appearing prominently on the official guernseys!!).
Ian’s thoughts on his neighbour prompt other points to ponder. One is that many
of today’s celebrities would not live “over the fence” from anyone. They’re in highrise apartments, or in mansions on oversized blocks of land, or on yachts - or
wherever - but rarely over the side fence from “ordinary people” (Coves, that’s
meant as a compliment!).
And while it’s an indication of the down-to-earth humility of a world champion, it’s
also a reminder to us that we might all have “champion people” living next door to
us.
They might not be household names. They might not be “successful” - whatever
that means. They might never have accomplished anything notable, and possibly
never will.
But if they can be relied on to offer help when it is needed, if they live in a manner
that is respectful and thoughtful towards those living around them, if they care for
their own loved ones with unselfishness and genuine love - then they’re champion
people.
The Covers have a champion living next door. And maybe we have as well. We
just might not have realised it.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: ’A guest sees more in an hour
than the host in a year’
- POLISH PROVERB
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: God's Boxes
I have in my hands two boxes,
Which God gave me to hold.
He said, 'Put all your sorrows in the black box,
And all your joys in the gold.'
I heeded His words, and in the two boxes,
Both my joys and sorrows I stored,
But though the gold became heavier each day,
The black was as light as before.
With curiosity, I opened the black,
I wanted to find out why,
And I saw, in the base of the box, a hole,
Which my sorrows had fallen out by.
I showed the hole to God, and mused,
'I wonder where my sorrows could be!'
He smiled a gentle smile and said,
'My child, they're all here with me..'
I asked God, why He gave me the boxes,
Why the gold and the black with the hole?
'My child, the gold is for you to count your blessings,
The black is for you to let go'
We should consider all of our friends a blessing.
A ball is a circle, no beginning, no end.
It keeps us together like our Circle of Friends.
But the treasure inside for you to see,
Is the treasure of friendship you've granted to me.
Today I pass the friendship ball to you.
Pass it on to someone who is a friend to you...
