Shawnee-Evergreen
Community Association
(S.E.C.A.) President’s Report
As we move into our second month of 2015, it appears that
Community Association matters for the balance of the year
will continue to focus primarily on better understanding of
the Shawnee Park development project and on working
with Cardel to make sure the community voice is heard
as development plans unfold. To date, Cardel has been a
regular participate in the SECA monthly Board of Director
meetings and have been very forthright in outlining
development plans and timing. Cardel has now submitted
their stripping and grading Development Application
Permit for the property to the City. The stripping will
begin as soon as the weather permits (probably in April)
and extend for approximately 1-2 months. New interior
roads will be built by late summer. SECA has approved the
Application subject to the following requirements being
met:
SECA Board of Directors welcomes your concerns,
questions, comments and suggestions as to how we can
continue to improve our community and encourages your
participation in our Community Association.
Sincerely,
Brad Smith
President, SECA

1. The developer (Cardel) and the City of Calgary ensure
that the Land Stock piles and the construction roads are
dust free. The planting of grasses or alterative ground cover
on the stock piles may take up to 45 days to be of any
value controlling the dust so alternate control measures
will need to be implemented until the permanent control
measures are in place.
2. The developer (Cardel) and the City of Calgary ensure
that the City noise bylaw number 5M2004 which includes
weekdays 7am to 10pm and 9am to 10pm weekends be
strictly adhere to.
SECA has also indicated to the City that we support Cardel’s
Development Application Permit for the first 17 homes to
be constructed on Shawnee Drive on the north side of the
old golf driving range. For those interested in following the
development more closely, Cardel posts regular updates
on their website http://www.cardelhomes.com/calgary/
communities/shawnee-park.
At the January Board of Directors’ meeting, Cardel reported
ongoing challenges in meeting the tree preservation
requirements included in the property rezoning bylaw.
Cardel has agreed to review their Land Use Bylaw
Amendment Application with SECA at a Special Board
meeting on February 3. We will work closely with Cardel
and with the City of Calgary to ensure key elements of the
original project approval are preserved.
Finally I would like to welcome Yulia Polikarpova to the
SECA Board. She lives in Beacon Hill and joined the Board
in January.

WHAT TO DO WHEN SECONDS COUNT
• Call 9-1-1 immediately. Early treatment can reduce heart
damage and make the difference of life and death.
• Treatment starts the moment EMS arrives. Paramedics
can provide oxygen, start an intravenous and perform an
electrocardiogram (ECG).
• Paramedics can also administer important medications
in the early minutes of a heart attack to lessen heart
damage.
• During transport, EMS will also share information with
the hospital so definitive treatment can begin immediately
on arrival.
• Take a CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator) course.
Training is available from many reputable organizations.
It’s easy, inexpensive, and only takes a few hours.
REDUCE YOUR RISK
Heart attack risk factors include:
• Obesity
• Sedentary lifestyle
• Smoking
• High cholesterol
• Age / Gender
• Family history
Speak with your doctor about how to treat your modifiable
risk factors and learn to be heart safe.

Fruits and Vegetables Add
Years to Your Life!
By Dr. Alma Nenshi, DC
www. CalgaryWellness.com
The figures are compelling and consistent. Eating 1-3
servings of fresh fruit and vegetables per day decreases
your risk of death in the three categories (cancer, heart
disease, and all causes) by 11%, 9%, and 14%, respectively,
compared with eating none. Eating 3-5 servings per day
decreases these risks by 19%, 18%, and 29%, respectively.
Eating 7 or more servings of fruit and vegetables per
day decreases your risk of dying from these causes by a
whopping 25%, 31%, and 42%, respectively.
The researchers also found that fresh vegetables have a
more significant effect on longevity and lowered mortality
risk than fruits, with each daily vegetable portion added
to the diet lowering mortality risk by 16%. Eating salad
lowered mortality risk by 13% for each portion added
daily, and fruit lowered mortality risk by 4% for each
added portion.
People have been told for years that eating more fruits and
vegetables is good for you and can improve your life. Well,
it turns out that eating more fresh fruits and vegetables
can actually extend your life, and add years to it.
That’s the message of a study conducted at University
College London, and published recently in the Journal
of Epidemiology & Community Health. The researchers
used data from the Health Survey for England to analyze
the eating habits of over 65,000 people considered
representative of the English population between the
years 2001 and 2013. What they found was that the more
fresh fruits and vegetables these people ate – at any age
– the less likely they were to die.
This study is the first to compare the consumption of fruits
and vegetables with rates of cancer, heart disease, and allcause deaths in a nationally-representative population.
It is also the first to link health benefits to per-portion
quantities of fruits and vegetables, and the first to identify
the types of fruits and vegetables with the most benefit.

Lead author of the study Dr. Oyinlola Oyebode says of the
findings, “We all know that eating fruit and vegetables is
healthy, but the size of the effect is staggering. The clear
message here is that the more fruit and vegetables you
eat, the less likely you are to die at any age. Vegetables
have a larger effect than fruit, but fruit still makes a real
difference. If you’re happy to snack on carrots or other
vegetables, then that is a great choice but if you fancy
something sweeter, a banana or any fruit will also do you
good.”

Interestingly, the researchers found no benefits to
longevity from fruit juice, as opposed to fresh, whole fruit.
Furthermore, canned or frozen fruit appeared to actually
increase risk of death by 17% per portion. The researchers
attributed this to the fact that most canned and frozen
fruits contain high sugar levels, and that the negative
health impacts of the sugar may outweigh any benefits.

THE FEBRUARY FISH CREEK SPEAKER SERIES – FIRE IN

Location: Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre,
Shannon Terrace, Fish Creek Provincial Park. (13931

SW) This is a reminder that Residential Parking Zone QQ
permits expire February 28th, 2015. You may obtain your
year 2015/2016 permits beginning January 1st from the
Calgary Parking Authority. Your permits may be renewed
in one of the following ways:
Presented by Scott Jevons, Geographical Information
Systems (GIS) Specialist and Alberta Parks Fire Ecologist
in Kananaskis Country
1. The permit may be picked up at our office at the address
listed below. The bylaw requires that you present a valid ALBERTA vehicle registration for each vehicle requiring a
permit, showing the correct address within the restricted
zone. Effective control of wildfires over the last century has
led to the near-elimination of fires that once shaped the
vegetation of Alberta. Loss of fire from the landscape is
causing dramatic changes to our forests and grasslands.
It is affecting species diversity, how ecosystems function,
and the resilience of ecosystems to natural disturbances
and changing climate. Take a historical walk through time
to view landscape changes in Kananaskis Country, and
learn about prescribed burns and how Alberta Parks is
dealing with these complex challenges.
PLEASE DON’T FORGET YOUR
VEHICLE REGISTRATION!!
2. If you wish, you may mail or fax* a photocopy of your
entire valid vehicle registration(s) along with a copy of
some other proof of address, such as a cable or utility bill
(Drivers’ license does not fax well). We will mail your
permit to you. See address and fax number below. Be sure
to allow enough time for mailing.
REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Free for Friends members

Show Your Love . . . With
The Gift of a Book
February 14th each year is
International Book Giving
Day. The aim is to get
books into the hands
of as many children as
possible.
The Book Giving Day
is a global volunteer
initiative and encourages
people worldwide to give a book to a child. If you’d like
to be part of this meaningful movement on February 14th,
you might:
1. GIVE A BOOK TO A FRIEND OR RELATIVE
Celebrate International Book Giving Day by giving a child
a new, used or borrowed book.
2. LEAVE A BOOK IN A WAITING ROOM OR LOBBY
Choose a waiting room where children are stuck waiting
and there are few to no good books available. Purchase a
good book, and deposit your book covertly or overtly in
your waiting room of choice. The goal here is to spread
the love of reading to kids, so choose a fun book, nothing
controversial.
3. DONATE A BOOK
Wrap up a box of books that your children have outgrown
and get them in the hands of children who could really use
a book or two. Donate your books to a local organization
serving children in need, a library, children’s hospital, or
shelter.
DOES YOUR PRESENT
FINANCIAL PLAN INCLUDE A
TARGET DATE FOR THE
ELIMINATION OF THE
MORTGAGE?
(OR OTHER DEBTS)
3 Would you like a financial plan that
includes managing and eliminating debt?
3 Do you feel like you earn a healthy income,
but do not seem to be getting enough out of it?
3 Do you want a financial plan that allows you
to Sleep at Night?
There are nonprofits locally and internationally that work
year round to give books to children. Calgary Reads brings
books to children who may have few through several
programs including their Reading Rally special events held
in area schools. Local businesses purchase books and their
employees join in the fun to read aloud to small groups of
children. It’s all part of the commitment to increase literacy
skills and build children’s reading confidence and joy!
Call and ask about a half hour
consultation that could impact your
financial plan by $1,000’s.
For lists of great children’s books by age and resources to
help your child develop critical literacy skills and develop
a joy of reading, visit calgaryreads.com.

REMEMBER TOO: Adult and children’s books can always
be donated to the CBC / Calgary Reads Big Book Sale that
occurs each May. Books reach children and funds raised
support Calgary Reads programs and initiatives.

FELINE WINTER WOES
As the weather turns colder, we are less likely to want to
be outside for extended periods of time. The same can
be said for our pets. It seems unfair however, that cats
are often treated differently than our canine companions. Dogs are brought in the house or put in a heated garage
and provided with beds and blankets to keep them warm.
But cats are often thought to be fine when left outside in
the frigid weather. Simply put, they aren’t. Although some may believe that cats are meant to wander
and hunt, this is not the case. They are domesticated
animals who need our care. Their built-in coats are not
enough when the temperature goes below freezing.
Visit any animal shelter during the winter and you will
invariably see cats who are suffering from frostbite,
especially in their extremities. Cats left outside often
lose the tops of their ears because they’ve been frozen so
badly. If their ears, noses and toes are being frozen, you
know they are feeling the cold everywhere else.
Responsible cat owners and guardians understand the
value of their pets to their families, their well-being and to
society and treat them accordingly. But we all know that even when we are diligent about
protecting our pets and keeping them inside, cats escape
and get out of doors or windows every day in our city. They are curious creatures after all. Unfortunately, they
may not always find their way back home.
We can all help to protect our own feline family members
by providing licences and permanent identification. This
helps to ensure that if they do get out, they can be returned
safe and sound. Identification shows others that your cat
indeed has an owner and makes it easy to identify and
contact you.
This winter, we can all help to change the plight of our city’s
cats. If you see a cat wandering in your neighbourhood,
you can check to see if he has identification. If you have
the cat in your possession and he is wearing a licence,
call 3-1-1 to have an officer come to pick up the cat. In
absence of a licence, you can take the cat to the Calgary
Humane Society or a vet clinic. You can also bring the
cat to the Animal Services Centre if it is during regular
business hours.

What Did Your Dog’s
Ancestors Do?
As a veterinarian, I was always fascinated by the ancestral
roots of many of our purebred dogs. In medieval England
every cottage had a turnspit and usually at least two
short-legged long-bodied dogs trained to turn a wheel
they walked in to keep the meat cooking evenly. These
dogs were known as Vernepators or turnspit dogs. Queen
Victoria kept retired turnspit dogs as pets. The breed
became extinct after the invention of the spinning jenny.
The Canadian Kennel Club divides dogs into seven groups
often based on the history of what these dogs once did. GROUP ONE contains the sporting breeds. This includes
the pointers, retrievers, spaniels, and setters. Those
breeds of dogs meant to find, flush out, and retrieve birds. Because hunting means a partnership between dog and
man, these breeds tend to form very strong human-animal
bonds. The Golden Retriever and Labrador retriever have
been among the top pet breeds in the world.
GROUP TWO are the hounds. The sight hounds or
gazehounds, include Greyhounds and Afghan hounds. They are tall and lean and hunt by seeing their prey. The
other type of hounds are the scent hounds and include the
Bloodhounds, Norwegian Elkhounds, and Coonhounds. They lead with their noses of course.
small game. West Highland White terriers or westies and
Airedale terriers are two popular breeds.
Then there is the FIFTH GROUP, the Toys. A few of these
breeds are meant to catch rodents, but mostly these are
our little lapdogs. The Papillon has been sitting on the
laps of European aristocracy in court paintings since the
fourteenth century, doing nothing but being beautiful. Many of these breeds come with massive personalities
despite their diminutive sizes. My eight pound Papillon
keeps my eighty pound Labrador firmly in check. The
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Italian Greyhound, and
Yorkshire terrier all belong to this group despite their
names.
GROUP SIX, the non-sporting breeds, is a catch-all group. It includes the bull breeds, such as the English bulldog,
and three varieties of the poodle. Some might argue the
Standard Poodle, or German Pudelhund, should be in the
sporting Group as its origin was as a hunting breed and it
is currently being admitted to some hunt tests in North
America.
The last group recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club
is GROUP SEVEN, the herding breeds, breeds once used
somewhere in the world to control livestock. These
include the Shetland Sheepdogs, Welsh Corgis, and
German Shepherd Dogs. Many who have owned some of
these breeds would equate their need to herd with their
need for oxygen it is so “bred to the bone”.
With the passage of time many of the groups are no longer
true to their intention and some groups designations vary
between countries and continents. Even if you have a mixed
breed it is fun to try to figure out what our pets ancestors
may have been like. Unfortunately, my experience with
the DNA testing promised by some companies to find out
distant parentage of pets has not been very positive.
Jennifer L. Scott, D.V.M.
GROUP THREE compromises the working breeds. These
are dogs that pull our sleds and carts. Dogs that guard our
homes, businesses, and were bred for military purposes
going back centuries. The Rottweiler’s ancestors guarded
and herded the cattle that fed the Roman legions. The
Newfoundland dog was bred as a lifeguard and draught
animal from dogs that came to North America with the
Vikings.
The Terriers are in GROUP FOUR. Terra is Latin for
earth. These dogs “go to earth” after vermin and other
