Burton Joyce & District U3A Newsline
Issue 8.2 | February 2015
Hello,
Welcome to your February 2015 Edition of Newsline.
In Newsline This Month
This month, in his Chairman's Message, below, Paul Geeson tells us about the formation of the new Outings
Support team. We have information about yet another new Group, Recorder, see page 3. The Spanish Group
is up and running, page 6, and we have updates on the Information Exchange, Tea Dancing, and Ukulele
Groups on page 3.
There is also an additional meeting being held on Thursday 26th February, when Danny Wells will be giving
his talk, originally planned for last September, on the "Art of World War I", see page 2 for full details.
Note: If you would like to send in an item for inclusion in the next edition of Newsline, it should be e-mailed
to [email protected], to arrive no later than 5:00pm Thursday 26th February. All items received
will be acknowledged by e-mail. - Keith Montgomery.
Chairman's Message
This month, I would like to follow up on my comments in last month’s Newsline with updates on the French
Holiday and BJ&D U3A outings. I am delighted that 14 people have already paid deposits for the French Trip
and this is sufficient to make the event viable and cost effective, although I was hoping that we would have
more than 20. We are now proceeding with bookings and detailed planning but it is not too late to join us.
Please let me, Michelle or Jenny know if you are interested, our contact details are on page 9.
Regarding our organisation of outings, I am very pleased to report that we have formed an outings support
team of five people, led by Alwyn Foster, who has expertly planned and managed many U3A outings over the
past few years. We are extremely grateful to Alwyn for taking this on. His team will be:
Ÿ producing a good practice guide to planning, organising and managing outings;
Ÿ advising on dates to avoid clashing with other events;
Ÿ liasing with and providing support to the organisers for each outing; and,
Ÿ developing a short programme of outings for the next year.
Alwyn's team already has several ideas for outings, but we are now looking for more good ideas for outings
from any of our members and offers to organise them. If you have ideas for outings and would like help to
organise them, please contact Alwyn or myself - Paul Geeson.
Meetings Programme
January Meeting Report
We were entertained at the January meeting by "The Woolly Tellers", Dave Brookes and Michael Whysall,
who are re-creating the art of story telling as public performance, taking it in turns to be the storyteller. We
heard four of their tales, two were spine-chillers set in rural parts of the East Midlands, and the other two were
about life in the cities. They were very entertaining and gave us a very different type of meeting.
If you enjoyed their performance and would like to see and hear more of their tales, visit the events page >>>

Future Meetings
10th February - Colin Bower “The Humour That Surrounds Us”
Colin Bower has been a radio presenter in Canada and South Africa, a newsreader and quiz
master for Welsh, Anglia and Tyne Tees television before finally going freelance as an actor,
broadcaster and voice over. Amongst other shows, he has appeared in Corrie, The Onedin
Line and Emmerdale as well as acting on the stage and screen. He also presented “The
Golden Years” for BBC Radio Nottingham. His talk, “The Humour that Surrounds Us”
should be a light hearted but up-lifting look at the funny side of life. - Judith Wright.
Colin Bower
Please don't forget if you have put your name down to help at the February meeting. - Linda Tobin.
10th March - Jean Townsend "Royal Genetic Diseases"
Additional Meeting
Thursday 26th February - Danny Wells “The Art of World War One”
All are welcome to come along to this talk from local historian, Danny Wells, which had
to be cancelled last September. Danny is an enthusiastic former history teacher who
believes in “Breathing Life into History” and this illustrated talk will do just that and trace
how British paintings reflect the changing nature of war and of attitudes to it.
When:
Thursday 26th February at 2:00pm
Where:
The Carnarvon Room, Chestnut Grove, Burton Joyce.
Cost:
£1 to include refreshments - Judith Wright.

Membership Changes
Peter & Janet Callaway have re-joined and we also have four new members, Robert & Sallyanne Johnson,
David Hallam, and Jennifer Holzapfel, and we welcome them all to our U3A.
Alina Fletcher has gone back to work on a part time basis and so has decided not to renew her membership.
This means that we now have a membership of 334. - Bob Clifford.
Committee Notices
New Members Coffee Morning
There will be a Coffee Morning for all new and recently joined members who have not previously been able
to attend one of our Coffee Mornings. It will be held on Tuesday 17th February at 10:30am in the St Helens
Church Centre, which is at the rear of St Helens Church in Burton Joyce.
Committee Meetings
The Committee meeting on 27th January focused predominantly on starting to think about how we could
develop a more structured approach to organising and planning our main outings for 2015 and beyond.
Our Chairman explained he wanted to see a balanced programme of outings with a standardised way of
disseminating information, collecting payments, etc. Alwyn Foster was invited to join the meeting to help us
discuss how we could develop this idea further. Many of you will know Alwyn from the excellent trips he has
organised over the years. Alwyn has kindly offered to share his experiences and lead a small coordination and
advisory team, he will be arranging the first meeting of his team shortly and we will be able to report further
about our ideas and plans in due course. He is also hoping to recruit other members to the team who have
organised successful trips in the past. The idea is that the team will help to put together a programme of the
main trips for the year, some of which they may organise but, we hope that other members will come >>>

>>> forward with ideas that they will wish to lead on that can then be incorporated into the annual programme.
Already this year Patrick Johnson and Jackie Spencer are leading a very popular trip to the National Arboretum
and Paul Geeson and Jenny Carr are busy planning the French trip. It is not the intention that this team gets
involved with individual groups' outings, but we may look to them for their expertise.
We also discussed issues related to our finances and started initial discussions about membership fees for next
year. Our membership has grown again this month to 334 and hopefully will be boosted further if we have a
series of attractive outings planned. - Michelle Price-Horne.
Groups News
This section of Newsline contains the Groups Facilitator's updates on recent changes to our Groups. It also has
reports from the Groups themselves on their activities and any changes to their normal meeting programme.
Our Groups are listed on pages 9-10 of this edition of Newsline, and fuller details on individual Groups are
given on our web site, see the 'Our Groups' page on the web site http://www.bju3a.co.uk/groups.html
New Group - Recorder
Sally Wightman has volunteered to co-ordinate this new Group, and already has a tutor. The Group will meet
every Tuesday morning at 10:30-11:30am in the old church hall (next to the chip shop). There will be a signing
up sheet at the February monthly meeting.
Update - Information Exchange
A few interested members have now signed up for this Group.
Update - Tea Dancing
This Group remains suspended until times and venues can be arranged. Sue Slater has problems with her free
time and the availability of the large village hall.
Update - Ukulele
Chris Smith has volunteered to co-ordinate the Group, Dorothy Pinkett has volunteered to host the Group once
it gets off the ground, and it has already had their first meeting with a ukulele tutor.
If you have any questions about our Groups, or would like to start a new Group, please have a word with me,
David Falkner, at the monthly meeting, or contact me via e-mail at [email protected] or by phone on
01636 918973. - David Falkner.
Aerobics
The start time for the Aerobics group has been changed to 1:45pm. The day, duration and venue for the
meetings remains unchanged. - Sally Wightman.
Art Appreciation
Our next outing will be on Thursday 12th February to the Djanogly Gallery for a guided tour of the
exhibition ‘In the Shadow of War’ (For full details please see this link:
http://www.lakesidearts.org.uk/Exhibitions/ViewEvent.html?e=2726&c=5&d=0 )/
Bird Watching
Attenborough never disappoints. The day was cold and windy with
heavy rain showers but we made it to the hide in the dry and enjoyed
some excellent bird watching. Bullfinches posed for us on the bushes,
a water rail (normally a very secretive bird) strutted across the grass and
a bittern flew across when we were all looking the other way. So we all
dipped out!
Our next outing on Thursday 19th February is a mornings visit to Carr
Vale Nature Reserve near Bolsover. This used to be John Bourne’s >>>

Several of our members from both the Tuesday (Bridge 1) and
Thursday (Bridge 2/Beginners) groups have had the confidence to join
various local bridge clubs.
Two of them, Lin Lomas and Pat Sully have had the accolade of being
awarded the Val Malone Cup by Woodborough Bridge Club for being
the most improved pair on Thursday evenings. Congratulations to you
both. - Dorothy Burton.

Film for Fun
On 12th January the Group went to see "The Theory of Everything". It was an absolute treat, the film tugged
on all our emotions, at times some of us could not hold back the tears and then the next moment we were
laughing with Stephen Hawking at his wonderful sense of humour. You actually forget Eddie Redmayne is
acting, his portrayal of Hawking's physical decline is unbelievable. Felicity Jones' portrayal of Jane, his
wonderfully supportive first wife, is just beautiful. We have seen some incredible films this season but, this
has to be the VERY best so if you haven't seen it then we urge you to go. A final word from Stephen Hawking:
"I thought Eddie Redmayne portrayed me very well in The Theory of Everything Movie. He spent time with
Motor Neurone sufferers so he could be authentic. At times, I thought he was me." - Peter Price-Horne.
The film on 26th January was "Testament of Youth", based on Vera Brittain's First World War memoir, which
highlighted some local connections. Her brother Edward attended Uppingham School, near Stamford, and
later was stationed with the 11th Sherwood Foresters. Vera and her family lived in Buxton and in 1907 moved
to Melrose House, a large Edwardian house next to the tennis courts. In 1915, Vera began nursing at The
Devonshire Hospital, the building is now part of the University of Derby. Edward was killed in Italy in 1918
and his name is inscribed on Buxton’s War Memorial. The Welbeck Estate in the Dukeries, provided several
locations, including scenes filmed at Cuckney House, used as the set for Melrose House. Welbeck provided
the locations for Uppingham School and the Étaples field hospital. The lake scenes were filmed in Darley Dale.
Both the film and Welbeck are well worth a visit, http://www.welbeck.co.uk - Michelle Price-Horne.
This month our films are:
9th February 2:00pm SELMA (12A)
Director Ava DuVernay tells the story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic struggle to secure equal
voting rights in this stirring and enlightening drama. SELMA chronicles the tumultuous three-month
period in 1965 when Dr. King led a dangerous and terrifying campaign that culminated with the epic
march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, that led to President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting
Rights Act of 1965.
23rd February 2:45pm WILD (15)
In this captivating and richly satisfying adaptation of the best-selling 2012 memoir by Cheryl Strayed,
Reese Witherspoon plays a young woman attempting the gruelling 1,100-mile hike across the Pacific
Crest Trail, after a self-destructive spiral following the death of her mother. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée
in collaboration with screenwriter Nick Hornby, WILD is a moving and emotionally resonant film.
Please meet at Broadway 15 minutes before the film starts.
ADVANCE NOTICE: 23rd March at 7:00pm, HAMLET with Maxine Peake, a film of the performance at
Manchester's Royal Exchange theatre. Tickets on sale now at the Broadway. Book Early. NOTE: Evening
performance, one night only, see http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/maxinepeake-as-hamlet-is-coming-to-a-cinema-near-you-10011503.html - Peter Price-Horne.

This Group has a new venue, the very pleasant surroundings of the Magna Charta in Lowdham. We are still
meeting every Friday at 10:00am, and the dates for our meetings in February are the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th.
Françoise may not be able to take some of the lessons, and so we may be entertaining and teaching ourselves
at times, which should be fun. - Sue Clifford.
History 1
History 1 is currently having a break and will be restarting in March with a study of the early Roman visits to
our country and the impact they had on our way of life. Subsequent meetings will follow the very early history
of our country, through the Dark Ages and the time before William the Conqueror.
© Jane Prest (with thanks to to Tyrone)
Anyone interested in this journey through time would be very welcome to join us. Please put your name on
the History 1 sheet and you will be contacted when Viv returns from holiday mid-February. We will be
meeting on the second Monday of the month at 10.30 am in Lowdham at the home of our Leader, Viv Bushell
from 9th March onwards. If anyone wants any further information before then please contact me, Kate
Robinson, 0115 911 7240. - Kate Robinson.
History II - Eight Enjoy The Tudors
On a cold, bright January day, eight stalwarts of the History
2 group caught the train to London for a visit to the National
Portrait Gallery’s exhibition of “The Tudors”. Dazzled by
the costumes, impressed by the cod-pieces, under-whelmed
by the pertness of Nell Gwyn’s oranges, we then felt the
need to restore some decorum by visiting the Charles
Dickens museum. On the way, we passed Coram Fields and
were just looking longingly through the fence (entry only
allowed with accompanying child and there wasn’t the
History II and the Betjeman statue,
opportunity to steal one) when we were invited in and given
St. Pancras Station
a
brief
history
of
Thomas
Coram,
see
http://www.foundlingmuseum.org.uk/collections/the-foundling-hospital-collection/thomas-coram-and-thefoundling-hospital/
On to the museum and we were all staggered to learn that Dickens had only received 3 years of formal
education yet wrote prolifically, fathered 10 legitimate children and even had time to have an affair with
actress, Ellen Ternan.

Mah-Jong
The times and days for the meetings of the Mah-Jong group were changed during January. The Group now
meets at 10:30am on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. The venue remains unchanged. - Helen Geeson.

Thursday 5th February will be our first meeting of 2015 as
we have decided to meet only on the first Thursday of the
month and in January would have been New Year's Day. On
the 5th February we will be going on a local tour visiting
Colwick Hall and Church, then on to Green's Mill, General
Booth's statue and the memorial to local hero Bendigo, with
the hope of a clear blue sky and winter sunshine!

Photography for Fun
Before Christmas we enjoyed a visit to Nottingham and
photographed the buildings around the Market Square and
the winter scenes at the Christmas market, going on to see
the modern stained glass window in St Peter's Church. On
St. Peter's Church, Nottingham
Pelham Street, above the shops beyond Zara's (formerly
Boots of High Street) on the wall of a building that used to be the offices of the Nottingham Journal, David
pointed out a plaque which states that J.M. Barrie (of Peter Pan fame) had worked on the staff there in 1883-4.
Despite having walked up that street many times, none of us had noticed it before! - Elaine Malcolmson.
The lucky thirteen set out from Caunton in a hailstorm,
battled bravely with the mud and elements, and succeeded
in ‘enjoying’ themselves in the sunny spells and the snow
storms. The walk went by way of Bathley and Norwell,
(welcome coffee stop), and back to The Plough at Caunton
for well deserved victuals. - Keith Stafford.

Ramblers
Our February walk, on Wednesday 25th, will be a City
Waterside Walk, about 5 miles long. It will be in total
contrast to January’s walk with no hills, no stiles, no mud,
no roads. We’ll follow the Nottingham and Beeston Canal
Ramblers enjoying the sunshine.
and the Rivers Trent and Leen in a circular route, finishing
at a canal-side pub. We’ll meet at the Pathfinder 100 bus stop in Southwell Road, opposite the Ice Centre, at
10:00am. This is when the 9:34 bus from BJ Co-op stop arrives. I’m looking forward to seeing many of our
ramblers on this walk and hope it will be an interesting and enjoyable walk in the sunshine! - Paul Geeson.

is very nice, then walk back over the hill into Burton Joyce. Anyone wishing to join me can e-mail me on
