HOLT SPOUT HILLS POND
from John Allison, Chairman, Holt Spout Hills Committee
In November 2014 the Spout Hills pond was refurbished by a local contractor and restored to its original condition. The pond was altered in the
1960’s by inclusion of a slipway and removal of a third of its retaining wall. This work was necessary for creating a fun event (‘It’s a Knockout’)
to raise money for the construction of Holt Community
Centre.
The Spout Hills committee of helpers was formed in 2006
and a bank and walkway was created to retain the water
in the pond. This was funded by a generous donation. It
was apparent in 2010 that it was difficult to keep water in
the base of the pond and the spout hills helpers applied
a cement covering to half of the pond area. After a short
while the pond continued to leak and needed a complete
reconstruction.
Holt Town Council was fortunate in their application for
grants from Norfolk Environment Waste Services and North
Norfolk Big Society fund. At present the pond is open water
but it is our intention to plant species of plants (in large
containers) which would be suitable for this environment.
Holt Town Council and Spout Hills volunteers are extremely
pleased that the
restoration has been
completed and is
a follow up to the
other work which
has been achieved
in removal of
brambles, bracken,
blackthorn, reed
mace and small
saplings in the last
8 years. There is
still a considerable
amount of work to
be completed and it
entails year to year
management of the
14 acre site.
The little hills
also requires
year to year
management. We
have been fortunate
to purchase
a considerable amount of mechanical equipment and general tools, but we do lack support from residents to continue this work. This is an
opportunity to come along on the last Saturday of the month 10.00am to 12.00noon and enjoy the open air, get some exercise and meet new
friends. No application forms are needed, just turn up, you will be warmly welcomed.
On a lighter note, I was reminded by Clive Cooper of an occasion when Stalky (Micky) Stolworthy was being held by his legs by old Notchy
(Wilfred) Hutson in at attempt to retrieve a sailing boat from the pond. Unfortunately, Stalky finished up in the pond and became completely
soaked. On speaking to young Notchy (John) recently, apparently most youngsters learned to swim in the old pond and he had fond memories of
Spout Hills.
Our photographs show the pond as it was in 1883 and the restored pond as it is today.

Bowen Technique Clinic
LUXURY CATTERY
The following article describes the Bowen treatment
experience of a woman in her 30’s who suffered
chronic lower back pain for over 12 years.
B (30s, regular treatments) had pain in her
lower and middle back with some spasm
evident, plus stiffness around her shoulders. She
had had a lower back injury as a child. She also suffered
from stress. She had three children between 8 months and
4 years. She was moving house shortly after her second treatment.
The pain in her back disappeared after the second treatment when
the Bowen pelvic move was added and, despite carrying many heavy
boxes during the move, she had no problems with her back. As the
Bowen treatment is helping with her stress, this has continued. She
claims she has never gone through the winter without frequently
falling ill, but has been fine ever since she started the Bowen sessions.
In her own words: “I have been diagnosed with degenerative disc
disorder and have suffered for 12 years with lower back pain which
has worsened since my children were born. Usually the pain was
severe and occurred frequently, often going down into my legs and
also up my neck and shoulder. After two sessions of Bowen it was
almost completely better. Since then I had slight twinges, which have
gone after a few days. In addition, the Bowen treatment seems to have
had a marked effect on my general health, with practically no illness
all winter, and also my mental/emotional health is much better. I don’t
have the down days and depression that I suffered with for years.”
If you want to experience the Bowen Technique yourself why not
book yourself a treatment - a typical course of treatment consists of
3-5 sessions only. For more informatioon please pick up a leaflet at
the clinic or contact me for a free telephone consultation.

Our Expertise
The Christmas period again saw Rotarians in Budgens for their
annual Christmas collection by kind permission of Michael Baker and
the staff at Budgens. The collection took place over seven days up
until New Year’s Day. We are extremely grateful for the help of the
Scouts, who turned out on Christmas and New Year’s Eve to help with
packing and also to all those Budgen’s customers who generously
donated towards this year’s charities, the new hospice at Hillington
and the 1st Holt Scouts. A total of £1708 pounds was raised. Thank
you.
At the club meeting on Tuesday 13th
January, Rtn Colin Thackray from the
Norwich South Club, spoke about the
Rotary sponsored smoke alarm scheme,
which is being run in conjunction
with the Norfolk Fire Brigade. Clubs
over Norfolk are contributing to a
fund, matched by RIBI, to ensure that
smoke alarms are available to be fitted
to those who have need of them. At
the end of the meeting Holt Rotary
Club President, John Richley (left),
presented a £250.00 cheque to Rtn
Colin Thackray to boost the fund.
Future events are listed below:
* On Sunday 1st February at 2.30pm, in the Auden Theatre at
Gresham’s School, is the North Norfolk Heat of the Young Musician
of the Year Competition. Entry is free and refreshments will be
available. We hope you will come and support these young musicians.

COUNTY COUNCIL NEWS
from County Councillor Dr. Marie Strong
Better Broadband for Norfolk: I know it seems a long time
since I first sought your support in order for us to obtain the
important Government money and I know for some parishes there is
still a wait.
The site www.betterbroadbandnorfolk.co.uk/ (or the site ending gov.
uk) is updated at least once a month and you can go to the postcode
checker, that is the box on the right beneath the counter, click the T &
C box and enter your postcode.
You can also use BT Wholesale Line Checker www.btwholesale.com/
pages/static/Community/Broadband_Community/Coverage/ADSL_
Availibility_Checker.html#http://www.betterbroadbandnorfolk.co.uk/
And for speed and prices go to the Ofcom Comparison sites at http://
consumers.ofcom.org.uk/tv-radio/price-comparison/
And I would also remind everyone that when better broadband is
available to you it is necessary to contact your provider and ask what
speeds and cost they are offering. A change from your existing system
does not happen automatically. Nor do you have to change if you do
not want to - the existing cabinets will remain. Next month I will use
this space to provide more detail as to how and where the broadband
money is being spent.
Mobile ‘Phones: Last month I described the meetings my working
group had been planning with representatives of the major providers.
I am pleased to say that representatives from the major providers EE
(the company that runs EE, Orange and T-Mobile in the UK), O2,
Three and Vodafone have now met with us and shared their plans.
These plans relate to the £5 billion investment announced by the
Culture Secretary DCMS intended to improve mobile infrastructure
by 2017.
So whilst our meetings with providers suggest that improvement will
be noticeable we look forward to seeing the plans and actual effect on
the ground for Norfolk and expect to remain in regular communication
with the providers as their plans develop.
Incinerator: Cory Wheelabrator, the company planning to build
the incinerator, have written to the DCLG (Minister Eric Pickles
Department) formally withdrawing their application for the Power and
Recycling Plant at the Willows site in King’s Lynn.
B1105 Dry Road: For those who on occasion use Wells-Fakenham
road I can tell you that the road closure scheduled to commence from
5th January was postponed and I am hopeful there will only now need
to be traffic controlled with lights - inconvenient but far better than
closure and diversions.
Aged 40-70? As I have mentioned before NCC is now involved in
health matters so I am sending you the following information.
If you would like to find out if you are eligible for a free NHS Health

UNPRECEDENTED DISASTER DEVELOPING IN RURAL MALAWI …..
urgent report from Lynda Mills, Aid Africa
Searing drought has suddenly changed into tempestuous rains and high winds in the rural areas of southern Malawi. In recent days, violent
rainstorms, flooding and cyclones have battered vulnerable communities, and more are expected.
A month’s rain fell in 24 hours, flooding was 2-3m deep in places and latest figures suggest
over 200 have lost their lives, with 200,000 displaced. Commentators are claiming this to
be the worst disaster in Malawi’s history.
In our immediate area, houses are collapsing, roofs being ripped off, leaving impoverished
families to find shelter in schools, churches and other public buildings. This is the ‘hunger
period’, but these extreme
conditions have caused even
more distress as mud-brick
kitchens have collapsed and their
contents, what little maize was
left, swept away. Around our Centre, during the
past week, about 1500 people
Some of the 500 homeless in Bwanali, the village have become homeless, having

more storms imminent.
The most urgent needs are for
water purification, plastic sheeting for shelters, food and blankets.
Aid Africa has already collated information and begun to organise relief aid, but we
Susana’s destroyed house
need more help. We have dedicated, experienced staff, alert to local needs, who can
help as soon as resources are available.
Tomorrow, we’ll issue the 2nd phase of our Food Programme, maize for 200 vulnerable families for the next month, but there is now so much
else to consider as we plan for both short and long term support for the needy communities we serve.

HOLT & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB
Flower Club members were very busy in December, firstly helping to decorate Blickling Hall for the festive season, then holding a very popular
‘Christmas Rings & Things’ workshop in Loades Hall. This aided in the wonderful
array of Christmas arrangements that members provided for our annual charity stall in
Holt (right). This year a donation was given to Tapping House Hospice.
On Monday 16th February we shall be holding our AGM at the Community Centre.
We also have a demonstration by Heather Shaw from Boston with the intriguing title
‘Round The World in 90 Minutes’. We do start a little early at 7.00pm rather than
7.30pm and visitors are still very welcome for this the last meeting of Flower Club
year.
In 2015 we have another wonderful programme of demonstrators but our main event
will certainly be the Festival that is planned at St. Andrew’s Church in Holt for the
50th anniversary celebrations of the Holt Society. We very much hope that the many
organisations and businesses in Holt will participate with us and make this occasion
something to be remembered as really remarkable. More information will follow.

Wood Burners & Multi-Fuel Stoves
The vital role of the Nurse Practitioner
Main agents for Aga, Hunter & Cleanburn Stoves
Holt Medical Practice is very fortunate to have five Nurse
Practitioners (NPs), fully trained Registered Nurses, who have
progressed to degree status which covers clinical medicine,
prescribing and research as well as specialisation in their chosen
categories. This valuable resource is funded from practice profits
whereby the nine partners forgo profit share to fund this additional
and valuable service for the benefit of the patients. Every morning
there is a daily assessment meeting, led by the duty doctor, when
emergency calls are assessed (triaged) and cases allocated to
the appropriate member of the practice who might be a Nurse
Practitioner in the first instance. The patient might then be referred
to the NP for a consultation but can always be reassured that a
doctor is available if necessary. The benefit to the patient is that
an appointment with a NP is 15 minutes rather than 10 and they
are all qualified to collect diagnostic evidence and prescribe where
necessary. Should they feel that the case is beyond their remit
they can always call the duty doctor. The important factor is that
they have already done the groundwork so that should an onward
referral be necessary to the duty doctor (or even to a hospital)
the basic medical details have been recorded thus saving time in
onward referrals.
Highly qualified NPs are a vital link between doctors and practice
nurses and can offer you, the patient, the same continuity of care
should you require it since you can always see the same NP.
Many run specialist clinics in diabetes, respiratory medicine, HRT,
urology etc. They are therefore a vital link between the patient, the
GP and the Practice Nurse, who deals with more minor conditions,
vaccinations, dressings etc. and very well trained Health Care
Assistants, who can deal with dressings, ear syringing and routine
health checks, which are offered to our patients. They can also
provide a link to Community Nurses if appropriate.

THE LATEST ‘MUST HAVE’
FOR YOUR HOME
Since the dawn of civilisation people have been lighting fires for both
cooking and heating purposes. Now in the modern age of central
heating, gas fires and electric heaters you would think that lighting
fires would be something that was left behind with your ancestors, you
would however be wrong!
Woodburners have become a ‘must have’ for many households
across Norfolk. The market for wood burning stoves has grown 20%
per annum since 2007 according to HETAS the industry regulatory
body. This increase can be attributed to a few factors, but mainly the
homeowner’s attempts to reduce their energy bills and become less
dependent on one form of energy supplier.
So what should you look out for when
buying a wood burner?
1. Output. All stoves have a nominal heat output measured in Kw. A
reputable installer will work out the output required in your room.
2. Efficiency of the stove. This is set by building Regulations which
have set a minimum efficiency for all new heating appliances. The
minimum gross efficiency for a dry stove is 65%.
3. Wood or multi fuel stove? Wood is a carbon-neutral fuel, as the
carbon it gives off is counteracted by the carbon it takes in while
growing.
A multi fuel stove will run on solid fuel, anthracites, smokeless fuel
nuggets etc or wood. Some multi-fuel stoves can be run on ‘slumber’
overnight.
4. Stove Installation. Having a stove installed is not something that
you can do yourself - you will need a qualified installer and the
installation will need to meet building regulations. You should only
use an installer that is registered with a government-recognised
Competent Person Scheme (CPS), such as Hetas. http://www.hetas.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
If, in the words of the old song, all you wanted for Christmas were your two front teeth, then the Wansbeck
Dental Practice is for you. No job too big or small, no disaster too ludicrous or laughable. Indeed Christina, the
sole dentist, is superbly skilled at all such dental procedures, and runs the only practice I have known where
you go in and come out smiling, and hear gales of laughter from inside the surgery, sometimes your own.
Christina, is wonderfully reassuring in handling and managing both that unexpected disaster, the regular
routine check-up and just generally dealing with the extraordinary business of trying to work in a space that
sometimes seems too small for the business or access required.
Wansbeck Dental Practice
All the staff are lovely - Dan, the Receptionist, Vicki (the dental assistant), and Kirsty (the hygienist) 6 White Lion Street

sometimes thought you would like to go Private but think you can’t afford it, then the Wansbeck Practice is
somewhere to investigate.
You’ll discover that Wansbeck’s dental plan can be as economical,
overall, as an accumulation of separately billed charges. It covers two
check-ups, and practically any and all necessary remedial work you might
find you need; and can, for a little more money, include four visits to the
hygienist in any given year (or, if you would rather, these can be paid for
separately, per visit, as and when you want one or not at all).
Wansbeck offers regular check-ups, x-rays, white fillings, root canal
treatment, extractions, cosmetic dentistry like crowns and bridges (new
materials like bruxzir and zirconia), dentures (Acrylic, Flexible, Chrome),
direct access to a hygienist, facial aesthetics and periodontal treatment.
But even if you just want to resolve that sudden toothache; or be able to
chew that next snack or meal; if you want to smile again without looking
like either a chimney sweep or ‘Jaws’ in James Bond; then pop in for a
chat and see how you feel, with no obligation.
Wansbeck is for teeth.
Wansbeck is for people.
Wansbeck is for people who don’t like dentists.
Wansbeck is for people that do.

HOLT SATELLITE
Dear Caroline,
In the recent insert in the Chronicle
concerning the Holt Community Centre, I
read with interest that a satellite dish is about
to be installed, which will enable the town
to have live transmissions of cultural events
from the National Theatre, the Bolshoi etc.
Is this a wise use of public money when our
town is already surrounded by professional
theatres and cinemas (Wells, Fakenham,
Cromer and Sheringham), which are already
satellite linked with a raked auditorium
allowing an optimal view of a large screen
and digital sound technology? Also since the
transmissions are live they have to be taken
on the day of transmission (which could
interfere with already booked use of the
Centre) and recommended prices are at least
£15.00.
Has this advance really been thought through
and does an audience exist at such ticket
prices - cinema transmissions, which don’t
always attract a full audience are £5.00? At
the moment cinema is when we want it, which
is often several weeks or months following
general release but these films are on cassette
so can be shown at a time of our choice.
Yours sincerely,
Tom Dick

HOLT CEMETARY
Dear Caroline,
I would like to respond to the letter from
Elaine Olby in the last issue.
My dad (Reggie Crowe) and I, and I’m sure
a lot more people, will agree with Elaine that
the cemetary gates should be open all the
time.
Our loved ones should not be locked up. The
gates can be closed but unlocked so that we
can push them open and shut them behind us
as we would at home.
My dad has been very unwell since my mum
and my brother died but he is a determined
man and still goes twice a day to visit.
It would be a lot better for him if he was able
to drive up to see his loved ones. So please,
please, make everyone happy by leaving the
gates open.

find one. Yet those Councillors, by the most
slender of majorities, have assumed sufficient
technical expertise themselves to ignore their
employees’ advice and grant permission.
As an aside, it would be far more cost
effective to us poor tax payers, for the
entire planning department to be disbanded,
leaving all decisions to be made by elected
Councillors regardless of their expertise in
such matters.
There is such a vast gulf between the
expertise behind the Planning Department’s
recommendations, and the Councillors’
decision to overrule them, as to render the
whole charade a mockery of ‘Planning’, and
as being strongly suspect to ‘undeclared’
vested interest.
The development ought to be pulled out of
local politics and placed in the hands of the
Ministry of Town and Country Planning.
Yours sincerely,

WEYBOURNE COMMUNITY
FUND
Dear Caroline,
Please could you make a space in your
correspondence pages for us to thank the
Weybourne Community Fund, for another
excellent Pensioners Luncheon this year?
Greeted by their members wearing nighties,
pyjamas, nightshirts, and onesies, we knew
we were in for quite a party!
The three course meal, coffee, mince pies and
mints all went down a treat and Class Act,
who entertained us for an hour were just the
ticket for a lively party atmosphere. On top
of all that there was a free raffle, what more
could we ask?
A vote of thanks given by one of the
gentlemen, expressed our feelings well.

SYRIAN APPEAL
Dear Caroline,
My name is India Hewitt and I am part of a small team who have set up an appeal to ship
aid to Syrian refugee camps.
In Syria there are 12.2 million people in need, 50% of them are children. The ongoing
freezing weather conditions there have caused fatalities and left hundreds of displaced
families without shelter.
The conditions in the camps is diabolical. There have been multiple cases of frost bite
amongst children and adults alike. The violent winds have shredded tents and personal
belongings lie strewn across the ground, buried under ice and snow or stuck in freezing
mud.
Our appeal is for used clothes and shoes for both adults and children. Although we began
just sourcing children’s shoes, our campaign has gained some momentum and now we
would like to ask for a range of necessities which are in desperate need.
Donations can be dropped off at Wells Deli, Market Place, Holt or call the following
numbers and we can arrange collections from you from most areas within Norfolk 07825 751831, 07824 166774 or 07810 743378.
The challenge is a huge one, which is getting more complicated but with the Help of
Syria Relief, a registered charity based in Syria, we will be able to deliver donations into
Syria successfully and make a difference.
We are a group of friends who want to make a positive impact in a terrible situation.
On 6th February we will be driving your donations from Norfolk to Manchester where
Syria Relief will load onto a container and they will be shipped to Syria.
Yours sincerely,
India Hewitt

THANKSGIVING FOR
THANKSGIVIGING
FORMARRIAGE
MARRIAGE
FROM THE RECTORY
Dear Friends,
Happy Valentine’s Day!
The rose is red, the violet's blue,
The honey's sweet, and so are you.
Thou art my love and I am thine;
I drew thee to my Valentine:
The lot was cast and then I drew,
And Fortune said it shou'd be you…..
(Gammer Gurton's Garland)
The origins of Valentine’s Day as we know it today are
shrouded in the mist of time and would appear to have little to do
with the celebration of the Saint from whom it takes its name.
St Valentine’s day was originally a celebration of one or more
Christian martyrs who were killed either in the 2nd or 5thCentury
AD. Stories of miraculous healings and heroic bravery grew up
around these Saints and over the years these stories became
increasingly embellished. One such story is that St. Valentine
performed Christian weddings in early Rome for soldiers who were
forbidden to marry. The Emperor Claudius II, believing that
married men did not make for good soldiers, banned the act of
marriage. Valentine was prepared to ignore the ban and to remind
the men of their vows and God’s love it is said that he gave them
hearts cut out of parchment.
However, it is not until the 14th century that the celebration of
St Valentine’s Day really became connected to the idea of romantic
love. The earliest description of February 14th as an annual
celebration of love appears in France in the court of Charles VI in
1400 where lavish festivities attended by several members of the
royal court, included feasting, amorous songs and poetry
competitions, jousting and dancing.
By the late 18th and during the 19th century the practice of
sending hand written Valentine’s notes grew in popularity until it
became the multi-billion pound industry we know today. In the
UK, over a £1billion is spent yearly on cards, flowers, chocolates
and other gifts, with an estimated 25 million cards being sent.
Entering into the romantic spirit of Valentine’s Day we are
planning a celebration of the love that is expressed between a
husband and wife in marriage. On Sunday the 15th February at
3.00pm there will be a special celebratory service at St Andrews
which will include a thanksgiving for the sacrament of marriage.
Whether you are planning to marry or are newly weds, or
celebrating over 60 years of married life, single or widowed, all are
welcome to come along and celebrate and give thanks for all that
marriage means. The gift of love which finds expression within a
marriage is one of the greatest gifts God can give us and this
Valentine’s weekend we intend to celebrate it. I very much hope
you might be able to join us as we seek to affirm and give thanks
for the joy of married life.
Every blessing

On Thursday 15th January at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham,
Chairman Tony O’Shea welcomed 23 members and one guest.
Our speaker, Matthew Smith, joined us after lunch and told us
enthusiastically about the work of the Sheringham Woodfields School
for children with complex educational needs.
Matthew is the Business Manager and he deals with the administration
of the School as a business, covering such aspects as maintenance,
catering, IT and efficiency: the school has a staff of 104 and a budget
of £2m/a.
The School is one of 11 in Norfolk and has 99 pupils between the ages
of 3 and 19, each receiving a tailored curriculum. The extraordinary
range of complex needs requires facilities ranging from those for deaf,
blind and immobile children, up to the provision of teaching A level
maths, chemistry and physics.
The School has 14 classrooms but shares some specialist teaching
facilities with nearby Sheringham High School and Sheringham
Primary School. The School is equipped with state-of-the-art
technology which includes a hydrotherapy pool and a sensory room.
Educational progress is monitored following Ofsted guidelines which
cover both scholastic ability and interaction with others in everyday
life situations.
In proposing a vote of thanks, Malcolm Bell congratulated the speaker
on both the subject of his talk and his excellent presentation.
Dealing with Club matters, the Chairman thanked Terry Penrose,
Ken Murray and John Dunsire for their contributions in making
the Christmas Lunch such a success, and the Hon. Secretary passed
around copies of the Speakers list through to July.
Our Vice Chairman drew Members’ attention to the forthcoming
AGM in March and said that, although he was delighted to report that
nominations had been received for all vacancies on the Committee,
more help would be welcome: anyone willing should notify the Hon.
Secretary.
Our next Meeting is on Thursday 19th February when Diane Evans of
the Sheringham Enhancement Group will give a talk on the history of
the Beeston Hill Y Station.

NORTH NORFOLK CHAMBER OPERA
The North Norfolk Chamber Opera (NNCO) is an amateur performing
group set up some 25 years ago by our President, Janet Bryant-Heron
to perform works seldom, if ever, seen in North Norfolk.
Our venues have included the Sheringham Little Theatre, Kelling
Barn, The Maddermarket Theatre and for many years now the Auden
Theatre which is part of Gresham’s School in Holt.
NNCO have put on an opera annually in the spring, performing such
works as ‘The Marriage of Figaro’, ‘The Magic Flute’ and ‘Don
Giovanni’ by Mozart, ‘Die Fledermaus’ by Strauss, ‘Sister Angelica’
by Puccini, ‘Albert Herring’ by Britten, ‘The Song in the Blickling
Garden’ by Davidson and many operettas and one act operas.
Our concerts in the autumn have been both serious and light-hearted
including ‘The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Mozart’ and ‘Opera
and Chips’ performed in a barn at a pub!
Our next production will be an English translation of ‘The Elixir of
Love’ (L’Elisir d’Amore) by Gaetano Donizetti, nightly on 16th-18th
April at the Auden Theatre - a fun ‘Rom-Com’ in which a lovelorn
young man takes an Elixir (actually only wine but he doesn’t know
that!) in order to try and win his love.
We are a very small amateur group and new members are always
welcome; non-performing as well as performing.
Rehearsals are underway but there is still time to join us for the
forthcoming production, in particular tenors and basses.
Rehearsals take place in the Loades Hall, Holt on Monday evenings at
7.30pm.

The Holt Chronicle Issue 318 30th January 2015
Are you sitting comfortably? Then I will begin.....!
These words will, for many readers, bring back fond memories as the opening lines before the start
of a well-known children’s story-telling programme on the television. And indeed, we were no doubt
all ‘sitting comfortably’ as we listened intently as the story unfolded. And hopefully, you are reading
this article also ‘sitting comfortably’ perhaps whilst having a mid-morning cup of tea or coffee in your
armchair or sofa catching-up on all the latest news in and around your local area.
But, think for a moment as to the number of hours that you do actually sit during the day. For
instance, you may sit and eat breakfast, then drive to the shops, school or to work, which for many
involves sitting at a desk for a greater part of the day. Then, there could be the drive back home,
eating the evening meal whilst sat catching-up with the day’s events with the family, reading the
newspaper or watching the television, again, sat down. The day is then finished off by a night’s
sleep, this time, lying down.
If, upon reflection, this example paints a true picture of you, then there is a good chance you may
have a modern day ailment called ‘sitting disease’. This is the new buzzword floating around at the moment that describes
someone who is suffering from a sedentary lifestyle. More importantly, it may be putting our health at risk. Interestingly, in an
average life time the amount of time spent sitting and lying down is 32 years!
I originally wrote this article back in 2013 but since then, we are seeing a continual rise in the
number of posture-related presentations of predominantly, low back pain and tension
headaches. The amount of research showing that long periods of physical inactivity increases the
risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and obesity is growing. A previous report by British
experts showed a proven link between prolonged periods of sitting and the increased likelihood
of disease. Australian researchers also reported that each hour spent watching TV demonstrated
an 18% increase in the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, perhaps because that time was
spent sitting down. Ironically, a few weeks ago (January 15th), the headline bulletin on the BBC
Breakfast news was that, ‘Inactivity kills more than obesity’ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health30812439). Most of the national newspapers covered this story on their front page; such is the
concern and need to raise awareness. In essence, it focused on a study published in the
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition which looked at more than 334,000 people (average age of
50) over a 12 year period from 10 European countries including the UK. If you are interested, I
have provided the link at the bottom of the next page for you to obtain the full article.
And, it is also hitting the younger generation. Many Chiropractors, including ourselves, are noticing a rise in the number of
young people presenting with neck and back problems due to an inactive and/or deskbound existence or carrying inappropriate
schools bags. At Creative Chiropractic, we have noticed and commented on the increase of younger patients presenting to the
Practice with severe postural issues linked with neck and low back pains, breathing and digestive issues and generally looking
older than their years. Parents of those children/young adults who attend the Practice will know what I am talking about. This
is hardly surprising when we consider how our routines and daily lifestyles involve less and less movement, all of which goes
against our natural evolutionally development.
A consumer study conducted on behalf of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) revealed that 65% of people aged between
16 to 34 years of age had experienced neck or back pain and almost a third have lived with the pain for up to a month after
spending hours slumped in front of the television. This compares to 38% in the over 65’s. "Human beings evolved as a walking
entity, exploring the world on our feet," says James Levine, MD and author of ‘Move a Little, Lose a Lot’. He also says that,
"The strangest thing in the world is that people spend all day scrunched in a chair. It's a form of physical entrapment,"
As Chiropractors, our primary aim is to restore proper spinal mechanics which in turn,
influences the function of the nervous system. Chiropractic management involves the
analysis of all sites of spinal joint dysfunction and, as part of that management, we work
with our patients to restore and rehabilitate the body’s normal structures. This is not
necessarily a ‘quick fix’ as a regime of care must proceed for a period of time to address
the chronicity of the remodelling stage of the healing process. It can take anything from
a few weeks to several months. The effects of abnormal posture on the
neuromusculoskeletal system may be vast, often due to abnormal gravitational stresses
and asymmetrical muscle forces that affect the maintenance of correct posture. For
example, for every inch of forward head carriage, the work required of the muscles in
the back of the neck is effectively increased by a factor of 10. In one amazing review,
the researches discussed the influence of forward head carriage on the mouth, teeth and
jaw complex (aka, the stomatognathic system). Here, cranium/jaw dysfunction, tooth
wear patterns and most significantly, craniofacial (skull and facial bones) growth
asymmetries and abnormities were found to be related to the posture of the head and
spine. Typical classroom desks are uncomfortable and rigid with a ‘one-size-fits-all’
design which can cause students to lean forward in their chair in order to take notes.
Sitting for more than short periods of time increases the risk of injury and in the
developing musculoskeletal structures in the younger generation who are vulnerable to
postural trauma and muscle loss.
The name given to this loss of muscle is known as muscular atrophy and the form of muscle wastage which is of particular
interest to a sedentary lifestyle is known as disuse atrophy.
email: [email protected]
18
The Holt Chronicle Issue 318 30th January 2015
In the general population, most muscular atrophy results from disuse. Sedentary
jobs and decreased activity can result in loss of muscle tone and significant
muscular wastage. Disuse atrophy can also result from immobilisation when
broken limbs are cast following a trauma. Reduced use of a muscle due to joint
pain can occur after an injury or following joint pain and inflammation and through
the normal aging process. The good news is that disuse atrophy is reversible with
appropriate exercise and postural/ergonomic advice.
And, as I mentioned before, a day barely goes by without hearing or reading some
news about rising levels of obesity and diabetes and how, as a nation, we are
generally not doing enough physical exercise. Food and dietary information is everywhere and we are saturated with what is
good and/or what is bad for us. It is enough to make the head spin and make one wonder in which direction to turn!
However, it really boils down to the good old saying of “if you do not use it, you lose it!” From around the world, research
evidence is mounting that exercise can have significant positive effects on all age groups with insulin sensitivity, body
composition, better gallbladder function, enhanced respiratory health, improved brain function and interestingly, in helping in
cancer prevention.
What can you do? “The general consensus is that small amounts of exercise, such as a
brisk daily walk for 20 minutes, which burns around 100 calories, has significant health
benefits” says Professor Ulf Ekelund from the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit at
Cambridge. Something else you can look into is getting a pedometer, a device for addingup the number of steps you walk in a day. They range in price from around £6 to about £40
depending on how technical you want to go but which ever device it is, your ideal ultimate
goal would be about 10,000 steps a day (there are also good pedometer apps on most
mobile phones).
So, if you think you are suffering from ‘sitting disease’ you may well find that 10,000 steps
is a difficult number to reach. I thought I would be ‘OK’ and that this target would be quite
easily achieved. How wrong was I! My wife and I conducted a trial for a week to see how
well we did and the results were startling to say the least! Even after walking the dogs in
the morning, moving around my consulting room for most of the day treating people,
occasionally getting out into Holt during lunch, and basic domestic duties at home, we
found it difficult to top an average of 5,000 steps a day! As a result, we made some minor changes to our weekly lifestyle and
now incorporate running and cycling in and around the area where we live and we walk to places where we might otherwise
have driven. And what a difference this has made! Our average number of steps for a week is now well over the 10,000 steps a
day and we continue to look at ways of increasing that number. We feel reenergised with higher energy levels and experience
less of that ‘sluggy’ feeling which emerges at the end of the day. Our minds are sharper, and generally, we feel better!
And this got me thinking. At Creative Chiropractic, we are very passionate
about what we do and in the 7½ years we have been practicing out of Lees Yard
in Holt, the thousands of people we have treated for posture and sedentarylifestyle related problems has been vast. It is often the case that when our
patients understand why they are feeling the way they are feeling this becomes
the trigger for that person to change their mind-set and get up and out and do
something about it! Others need a little more prompting and confidence building
to enable them to change their life around, improve their exercise level, lose
weight and just get that ‘feel good factor’ about themselves (this applies to ALL
age groups and abilities). At the end of the day, it is what we all aim for.
From listening to our patients, the primary feedback we have had is that they
found talking to someone and being listened to was the most beneficial aspect of their encounter. This is one of our primary
philosophies as we like to treat each patient individually and according to their own personal circumstances.
So, can we help you or a family member?
If you would like to take the opportunity to have a chat with one of our
Chiropractors (Michael, Robert, Rachel or Chantal) but feel you do not want to
commit to anything definitive as far as treatment is concerned, then why not
utilise our FREE 30-MINUTE PAIN ASSESSMENT (or download off our website).
Regardless of your age and ability, there is always something we can advise
upon that can help you to improve your health. For more information, call the
Practice on: - (01263) 715522 and have a discussion with one of our
Practice Coordinators. You can also visit our web site to view patient stories and

The dealership came top of their league of 28 rural dealers nationally,
having sold 21 Leafs last year, more than double their target, which
combines with other targeted achievements in 2014, which won them
a luxury holiday in South Africa for Kevin Abbs (above) and his wife
Elaine and a gala Dinner in Birmingham, hosted by Nissan Directors,
for Rupert, James and Paul from the sales team.
The Leaf award is a particularly impressive achievement bearing
in mind that rural north Norfolk does not have anywhere near the
number of charging points as in the cities. Crayford and Abbs have
been working with the NNDC to increase charge
points in our area.
Sales manager Rupert Fox said, “For us at Crayford

to portray the benefits of running such an efficient
vehicle given the infrastructure we have in the area.”

COUNCIL’S ‘SPORTS CLUBS AND
HUBS’ PROJECT GETS OFF THE
STARTING BLOCKS
North Norfolk District Council’s Sports Clubs and Hubs
project has started to help more local people get into sport with a
variety of different activities available for the over 50s.
Classes ranging from Belly Dancing to Badminton are now available
in community ‘hubs’ across North Norfolk and are a cost-effective
way to participate in and try a range of new activities. The courses are
available for the 50+ age group, cost just £1.00 per session and can be
joined at any stage during a 10 week programme.
The project, which has been designed in response to local demand, has
been made possible thanks to £211,512 of National Lottery funding
from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund.
There were well over 200 applications nationally for the fund, and
NNDC is among 88 projects to receive a share of £15 million of
funding to support grassroots sport activity across the country.
The project aims to build on the work NNDC has already delivered
through its highly successful mobile gym service. Emphasis will
be placed on making these activities self-supporting in the longer
term, something that has already been achieved with a number of
‘community gyms’ in the district.
Glyn Williams, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural
Services, said: “I am delighted to see such a positive response from
local people following the launch of this great project. It’s encouraging
to see that many of those who are already taking part are sharing their
experiences with friends and family using social media. Our aim is
for the activities to become self-supporting after three years, or even
sooner if the interest is there, which I am sure it will be.”
The second phase of the project will start in February and will see
sporting activities delivered in local schools for 14 - 25 year olds.
Activities will include Street Dancing, Martial Arts and Boxing.
To book any of the activities or for more information, please see
www.northnorfolk.org/clubsandhubs or contact Wyn Nurse on 01263

The Lone Ranger and Tonto walked

After a few minutes, a big tall cowboy
walked in and said “Who owns the big white
horse outside?”
The Lone Ranger stood up, hitched his gun belt, and said, “I do....
Why?”
The cowboy looked at the Lone Ranger and said, “I just thought
you’d like to know that your horse is about dead outside!”
The Lone Ranger and Tonto rushed outside and sure enough Silver
was ready to die from heat exhaustion. The Lone Ranger got the
horse water and soon Silver was starting to feel a little better.
The Lone Ranger turned to Tonto and said, “Tonto, I want you to
run around Silver and see if you can create enough of a breeze to
make him start to feel better.”
Tonto said, “Sure, Kemosabe” and took off running circles around
Silver.
Not able to do anything else but wait, the Lone Ranger returned to
the saloon to finish his drink.
A few minutes later, another cowboy struts into the bar and asks,
“Who owns that big white horse outside?”
The Lone Ranger stands again, and claims, “I do, what’s
wrong with him this time?”
“Nothing .... but you left your injun runnin!”

SNOWDROP WALKS
at Brinton Hall, Stody Road, Brinton NR24 2QH.
‘A hidden secret’. The snowdrop walk takes place within a County
Wildlife Site well frequented by wood sandpipers, egret, buzzard and
barn owl as well as a lone swan, varieties of geese, duck, coot and
the shy woodcock. The view from the house, set in formal gardens, is
over parkland sweeping down to water meadows, with the woodland
beyond carpeted with thousands of naturalised snowdrops.
There are waymarked walks from the garden, through the parkland,
round the lake and through the woods, where trees and shrubs have
been planted (and labelled) for autumn and winter interest. Due to the
wet winter, it may be muddy in places so walking boots or wellies are
advisable.

SUPERMARKET SERVICE!
A man walked into the vegetable section of his local supermarket
and asked for half a head of lettuce. The boy working there told him
that they only sold whole heads of lettuce. The man was insistent that the boy
asked his manager about the matter.
Walking into the back room, the boy said to his manager, “Some idiot wants
to buy a half a head of lettuce.”
As he finished his sentence, he turned to find the man standing right behind
him, so he added, “And this gentleman kindly offered to buy the other half.”
The manager approved the deal and the man went on his way. Later, the
manager found the boy and said, “I was impressed with the way you got
yourself out of that situation earlier. We like people who think on their feet
here. Where are you from son?”
“Originally from Essex sir,” the boy replied.
“Why did you leave Essex?” the manager asked.
The boy answered, “Sir, there’s nothing but loose women and footballers
there.”
“Really?” said the manager. “My wife is from Essex.”
“She is!” the boy replied. “Who does she play for?”

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKING
NEW! Credit Crunch Cooking
Demonstrations in Holt
Fresh and Frozen Fusion
The first FREE Credit Crunch Cooking Demonstration
was held on Thursday 15th January at The Holt
Community Centre. Attendees enjoyed a relaxed time
of friendly instruction, and picked up some money
saving ideas and easy, delicious and healthy recipes
ideal for feeding everyone from a single person to a
whole family.
Run by Holt Chronicle’s Credit Crunch Cookery columnist Carolyn
Burn (above and below), it was a great start with just a small group of
mixed age attendees who were keen to find out how cheap it really is
to cook fabulous food and learn some new tips.
Having spent the last 6 years writing the Credit Crunch Cooking
Column, Carolyn is keen to share the experience amassed in a more
practical way and said, “Sharing cookery knowledge was something
that was naturally passed down the generations; now sadly much
of that has gone, so these times of sharing time and demonstrating
techniques is a way of trying to bring a little of that back. I really
hope that local people will come to these sessions, and add their own
expertise and knowledge to them. This is about building a community
of cooking enthusiasts and learners who want to improve their
cooking skills, knowledge and recipe repertoires. Anyone can learn to
cook great, affordable, healthy food.”
When attempting to get your 5… or 7… a day, don’t neglect the
humble frozen vegetable. They are often far fresher than other
fresh veg, being frozen within hours of being picked and with lots
of valuable vitamins intact. The trick is not overcooking them. At
this time of year, when you’re craving a little taste of summer, try
this cheap and delicious curry, which combines fresh aubergine
(admittedly not exactly seasonal fare, but still available in Lidl for
only 50p each) and frozen whole green beans, which are available in
most supermarkets for only £1.00 for a large bag. Run them under
a hot tap or take out what you need and allow to defrost naturally,
before adding them into your curry, then cook only briefly, to allow
the firmness to remain. Make sure when choosing your aubergine that
it feels heavy for its size, with shiny firm skin.
Pop in the chilli if you like a little more heat to your curry, but
without it this makes a lovely, aromatic curry suitable even for
children. You could also add in other veg to this curry, such as celery
and peppers, to gain even more vitamin goodness - a great way to
cheer yourself up and ward off any nasty bugs which may be lurking
around at this time of year!
Aubergine and Green Bean Curry
(Feeds 2 people, around 70p per portion)
1 large aubergine, cut into large flat chunks
1 white onion finely chopped
2 inch piece root ginger finely chopped
2 fat cloves garlic finely chopped
Coconut oil
1 heaped tsp cumin
2 tsp Garam Masala
1 red chilli, finely chopped (optional)
2 handfuls frozen whole green beans, defrosted
1 tin chopped tomatoes
3 chopped sun dried tomatoes
A little tomato puree
Start by chopping your aubergine; slice lengthways, then cut across
the lengths into thickish slices, about ½ inch. Heat up a griddle pan
(you can buy these cheaply at supermarkets/argos etc for under
£10.00 and they are so handy for grilling meat, fish and veg without
the need for much oil) and put in a little oil. Put the slices in and
griddle on both sides until starting to soften and colour - you will
have nice griddle marks on them. Set them aside. Now put a tblsp
coconut oil into a large deep frying pan or wok, and add the onion,
garlic, ginger and chilli if using as oil heats up. Make sure you do
not burn it. Add the spices, and keep moving until the onions are
softening. Add the aubergine in, and stir for approx 5 mins, then add
the tomatoes and a little puree, so that you have a nice thick sauce.
Finally add in the green beans and simmer for a further 5 mins.
Serve with brown rice.
This is a great keeper, as the flavours continue to develop, so keep
it in the fridge for a couple of days - also fabulous as a baked potato
topper.
Carolyn Burn
There’s something for everyone, from people who have been cooking
for many years to complete novices. The sessions last for an hour and
a half, and Carolyn explained that it’s as much about eating the food
as learning how to cook it, so attendees get to eat the prepared food
after the demonstration. “I firmly believe that people will be more
enthusiastic about trying new recipes if they have actually tasted it
first. Despite the old saying ...... there is such a thing as a free lunch
after all!” said Carolyn.
Anyone is welcome to attend, and there is plenty of space for more
people. This week attendees learned how to make Hummus, Tzatziki,
5 Minute Herby Flatbreads and Bacon and Lentil Minestrone.
Don’t miss out on this great FREE opportunity! The next events
are on Thursdays 12th and 26th February, 11.00am - 12.30pm at
Holt Community Centre. Call Carolyn on 01263 710252 or 07789
220256, or email [email protected] to book your place.

The Holt Chronicle Issue 318 30th January 2015
£100,000 APPEAL TO RESTORE 103 YEAR OLD
ENGINE ACHIEVED
The M&GN Joint Railway Society, the supporting charity of the North Norfolk Railway (NNR) has successfully raised
£100,000 for the overhaul of the NNR’s oldest working steam locomotive.
The appeal was launched in September 2013 to raise funds to overhaul Great Eastern Railway
(GER) ‘Y14’ Class locomotive (LNER class ‘J15’), which is owned by the M&GN Joint Railway
Society and has required a heavy general overhaul to ensure it can return to steam and start hauling
trains once again.
Society chairman Neil Sharpe who spearheaded the appeal said: “The support for the appeal has
been fantastic. Raising the six
figure sum has been a hard task
indeed, but the response by both
our membership and by supporters
of our plucky little engine has been
phenomenal. I would like to put on
record my most grateful thanks to everyone who has done their bit to help this
fantastic engine steam once again.”
The extensive works have included a full boiler and mechanical overhaul.
The total cost of the overhaul will exceed £350,000. The additional cost of
the overhaul has been met by the support of over 3000 Society members, by
the members of the engine’s supporting club and by the revenue generated by
the Society’s other steam and diesel locomotives that haul trains on the North
Norfolk Railway.
Society steam locomotive engineer Keith Ashford has led the project and said:
“The overhaul that we have undertaken is believed to be the most comprehensive
that the engine has had since she was first built in 1912. It has certainly been the most technically challenging overhaul the Society has managed
too. Brand new components have had to be made to replace worn
originals, which involves working to very tight tolerances and
high engineering standards. We are firm believers in ‘doing the job
SPECIALISING IN LONG DISTANCE JOURNEYS
properly’ so whilst it has taken a little longer than planned, the quality
Transporting
clients safely and comfortably to destinations
of the work will really pay dividends in reliability in the long run”
anywhere
in the UK and Europe.

In 1891 a ‘Y14’ class engine was built in the record time of 9 hours

Stratford works in north London for final painting.
The Society’s ‘Y14’ is now the only one left of its type. It has unique
historical pedigree for the North Norfolk Railway as it used to run
on the line before closure under the Beeching axe in 1964. During its
working life it was based at Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Norwich,
before being withdrawn for scrap in 1962, which is when it was saved
by the early pioneers of the North Norfolk Railway.

COOKERS BY CLUTTERBUGS!

After seven years of running ‘The Sun Deck’ Bed & Breakfast in
Sheringham, Andrew has now moved on to developing the vintage
business which he runs with his wife Sheila. They have a little shop
called “Lily Likes…” in the centre of Sheringham (opposite The Lobster
Public House) which offers a wide range of vintage and antique china,
pictures, accessories, books, magazines, clothes, curios and trinkets. The
success of this venture has given Andrew the “vintage-bug”, and he also
now offers a similar range of vintage and antique small furniture and
goods from The Mews Emporium in Holt.
To book Clutterbugs oven cleaning service or enquire about Lily

also has a Facebook page; visit www.facebook.com/lilylikessheringham
- or better still, call into either outlet for a good browse soon!
Have you ever thought what the Briston Day Centre is all about?
We are a small group of lively senior citizens and people with
disabilities who meet up twice a week for fun and companionship;
we don’t just sit and doze in our chairs and play bingo either (!), we
have regular entertainers, trips out in our own minibus, hilarious
(non-strenuous!) keep fit sessions, learn new crafting skills and have
a lovely home cooked lunch too.
We meet on Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30am - 2.30pm at All
Saints Close Community Hall, Briston.
Some people come just for one day each week, others come on both
days.
If you live within a five mile radius of Briston and are unable to
come under your own steam, then we do a door to door collection in
our minibus. Singles or couples are all welcome!
If you would like to find out more, or book a ‘taster’ session to
see what we are all about, then just telephone Dorothy or Carol
on 01263 861120 on a Monday or Thursday between 9.30am and
2.30pm.

BROADLAND CHESS CLUB
A FOOTBALL QUIZ TO TEST YOUR
KNOWLEDGE OF ‘THE BEAUTIFUL GAME’
Broadland chess club has made a good start to the new year.
The club is the only Norfolk club to play in 4 NCL, the National
Chess League, and has 2 teams in Division 3 South. The first
team, Broadland Bitterns, won 5-1 against Hackney 2 and 4½-1
against Surbiton 2. This means that the team is in 4th place out of 49
teams in the Division.
At the end of the season four teams will be promoted and the
club hopes to maintain the push for promotion. The second team,
Broadland Harnsers, drew 3-3 with e2e4 4 and won 3½-2½ against
Sussex Martlets 2.
In the Norfolk league Broadland Bitterns are top of Division 1 having
won all of their matches. Broadland Harnsers are unbeaten and top of
Division 2. Broadland Harriers are top of Division 3 and Broadland
Swallowtails are mid-table in Division 3.
In the Williamson Plate, Broadland Cormorants beat Dons Cavaliers
4-0 and Broadland Buzzards beat Lowestoft B 3½-½. Therefore,
the club has 2 teams in the semi-finals. Will the semi-final draw be
kind and keep the 2 teams apart and allow the possibility of an allBroadland final?
In the junior section of the club play has just started in the UK Chess
Challenge and it is hoped that a number of Broadland’s juniors will
qualify for the finals of this national competition.
The club is delighted to have gained several new members recently
to ensure its place as the largest chess club in the county. More
information about the club can be found on the club’s website https://
sites.google.com/site/broadlandchessclub/.
If you are interested in joining us, please contact club secretary Paul
Badger either by e-mail [email protected] or by telephone on
01603 737572.

Solution to No. 152: 1.Re3, threat 2.Qb3 (also follows 1... Kd1).
1... d1Q 2.Rc3; 1... d1N 2.Re2. After the try 1.Qf3? (threat 2.Rc3)
the promotion defences lead to mates on the same squares by the Q
instead: 1... d1Q 2.Qc3 and 1...dlN 2.Qe2, but 1... Ne4 defeats.
Our alphabet of Miniature composers continues with B for No. 153,
which requires a little care in avoiding tries while providing for
Black’s castling defence - so difficulty 2½.

CHARITY FOOTBALL
MATCH
On Sunday 11th January nearly 200 people
turned out to watch a football match between
a Briston team and a Holt United team, which
was held at Briston Recreation Ground.
The event was organised by friends Michael
Grand, Ian Darricott and Carla Vardigans
to raise funds for charity, including
Addenbrookes Sick Children’s Trust, which
caters for parents and carers of sick children.
This charity was chosen because local
teenager Ellie Shaul, 16, had recently had a
brain tumour removed at the hospital and they
wanted to help Ellie’s family raise money for
this very good cause. Ellie’s father, Trevor,
was a keen footballer and played for both clubs during his playing
career and the turn out by his ‘Old’ teammates for the match, some of
whom are now in their 60’s, was a credit to him and his family.
The final score was the home side triumphing 6-3 and the total amount
raised for charity, £1600.00.

NORTH NORFOLK PHOTOGRAPHIC
SOCIETY
The New Year began for North Norfolk Photographic
Society on January 7th when 4 members spoke to the club
about aspects of their own photography.
First was Paul Hughes who went on a solo walk along the ancient
pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella. Of the various routes,
the one from the French border is the best known ‘Camino’ and
this was the one that Paul took. He called his talk ‘A Camera on the
Camino’ and showed numerous pictures he took over more that 30
days of walking some
distance of almost 800
kilometres.
Paul described the
accommodation along
the way; one run by
an English couple:
excellent. Another,
infested with bed-bugs.
Photographs were shown
of the landscape, now
fairly level farmland,
then rugged and
mountainous. Buildings Left to right: Judy Knights, Robin Johnson,
Judith Wells and Paul Hughes
from adobe (mud)
agricultural barns to lavish medieval churches.
Paul said that although he went solo, he was never alone. Hundreds of
thousands walk the Camino each year and a great sense of fellowship
exists.
After the break, three short presentations were given, first by Judith
Wells who spoke about her travels through climates hot and cold
(Africa, the Amazon basin, north Norway and South Georgia to name
just a few) and showed some of her photographs of birds from all
these places, many of astonishing colour and brilliance. Secondly,
Robin Johnson showed some of the weird things that he does with his
images, using the tricks built into software like Photoshop.
Last but by no means least, Judy Knights showed a number of the
beautiful photographs that she had submitted in gaining her LRPS
and CPAGB distinctions with the Royal Photographic Society and the
Photographic Alliance of Great Britain.
Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on
the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month from 7.30pm in the Holt
Community Centre. For further details please contact the NNPS
Secretary, Judith Wells at [email protected].
ANYONE FOR TENNIS?
A Holt based social tennis club is looking for a few
more new members. It meets at Gresham’s School on
Monday afternoons between 2.00pm and 3.30pm.
During the autumn and winter it plays indoors in the
sports hall on short courts and in spring and summer
outdoors on the full size courts.
Members can sign up for both or one of those options. The club needs
about half a dozen more members to make it financially viable so
please come to its rescue and in the process enjoy a new experience or
reconnect to a sport you have always enjoyed.
We like to think that the standard is middling club level but we would
encourage anyone to come along and have a go. We have some club
raquets for the use of those who want to give it a try but do not want
to commit themselves in the first instance. So anyone interested
in joining this friendly, relaxed group of players for a bit of gentle
exercise, please contact David Brooks on 01263 768344 or John
Roebuck on 01263 713248.

THAT’S LIFE! More true life experiences
Having been a driving instructor for 15 years I’ve seen
students do some strange and embarrassing things.
Recently, though, one young man outshone them all.
As he brought the car to stop after attempting a reverse-parking
exercise, he opened the door to check where he had finished.
Obviously dissatisfied with his position he slammed the door shut.
Unfortunately, he was still looking out of the door when he
attempted to close it.
The remaining term of the lesson was taken up at the local A&E as
we waited for him to have his head x-rayed and the doctor diagnose
a short course of aspirin.
Amid the hype and hope of the World Cup my husband kept
moaning that he wished he were there. So imagine my glee when the
following text arrived from his boss: “I’ve been offered corporate
hospitality to travel to the World Cup on Sunday, 9th July to
watch the final, all expenses paid. I can take two mates and was
wondering if you’re not doing anything could you put my bin out on
the Monday?”
A small child complained to the teaching assistant on duty in the
school’s playground, Miss, Miss, he said the R word!”
The assistant looking puzzled, replied, “R word? What R word?”
“Arse!” declared the complainant.
