POSITION
A seasonal Forestry Field Technician position is available with the Center of Environmental Management of
Military Lands (CEMML) for the 2015 summer field season. The position will support forest inventory as part of
the U.S. Army’s forestry program on Fort Wainwright lands.
ORGANIZATION
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado
State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable
management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DOD) and other public lands. We
provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities
to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex

LOCATION
Work will be based at Fort Wainwright. Travel required to Yukon, Tanana Flats, and Donnelly Training Areas in
Alaska. Fort Wainwright is located east of Fairbanks, Alaska and encompasses over 900,000 acres including
over 700,000 acres in Donnelly TA. Approximately 15,000 people live and work at Fort Wainwright. Fairbanks
is the second largest city in Alaska by population. Fairbanks provides city life, as well as access to fishing,
hunting, native crafts, hiking, and views of the Alaskan mountain scenery. http://www.fairbankschamber.org/.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be a member of a Colorado State University field crew conducting forestry
projects on US Army Alaska lands. The Technician’s assignments will include timber sale cruises/layout,
logging road layout/design, Forestry Inventory Analysis, post fire assessment, post fire vegetation monitoring
surveys, logistical support, and invasive species monitoring/mitigation. Work will be accomplished in a
combination of four consecutive 10-hour days or eight consecutive 10-hour days with appropriate time off in
between work shifts. Field crews will occasionally live and work out of remote field camps for up to eight days
at a time. The Technician will be involved in extensive walking, ATV riding, motor boat travel, and navigating in
remote regions with limited supervision. The successful candidate will collect site index, stem density, crown
cover, plant species composition, and volume data using standard inventory techniques and equipment (i.e.
diameter tape, increment bore, laser range-finder, compass, GPS, data logger, crown densiometer). Various
vegetation sampling methods will be used to quantify understory composition and density as well as additional
data collected will include topographic measurements, plot location information, wildfire fuel loading, wildlife,
and forest health observations.
HOUSING AND DURATION
The successful candidate must provide their own local residency and commuting. Orientation and training will
be provided at the beginning of the summer to prepare seasonal personnel for the field season. Transportation
will be provided within Army lands. Only communal camping equipment will be provided during remote camp
stints. Approximately 3 month position starting in late May 2015 and ending late August 2015, flexibility on
start and end dates. Data management/analysis and stand mapping work may be available during the fall.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa
sponsorship for this position. Completion of one year in forestry, NRM, botany, ecology, or related discipline
with at least one course in forestry or plant ecology is required. Must have the ability to interpret and navigate
remote terrain using aerial photos, GPS, topo map, and compass. Flexibility and willingness to work long hours
in adverse terrain and weather conditions is essential. Successful candidate must have or be able to obtain
valid driving license.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of standard forestry inventory techniques and vascular plant sampling/taxonomy are preferred.
Proven initiative, independence, and demonstrated ability to make decisions in the field is highly desired,
minimal supervision will be provided after initial training.

PAY RATE
Pay rate is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The range is $15.51-$20.71 per hour.
Continuation of these positions is dependent on the receipt of funding from the sponsor for these positions.
Overtime may be available in limited amounts and per diem will be provided while on travel status.
