Local MP and Chairman of The Conservative Party
Rt Hon Grant Shapps visits Stanborough
Rhys Jose, 11H, writes:
On Friday 23rd January,
an excited group of
students were invited
to a very special talk
hosted by none other
than our Local MP and
Chairman of the
Conservative Party,
Grant Shapps. He first began with an introduction to the
world of Politics and how he became who he is today. After
revealing some political strategies to a large audience
consisting of the Year 9 Leadership academy, selected Year
10’s, Year 11 Prefects and Sixth form Politics students, he
participated in a rather lengthy Q&A session in which any
student could raise any question they liked. Whilst a second
talk was originally planned, it had to be scrapped to cater for
the immense amount of questions! Grant himself was
surprised at the high calibre of questioning and stated that the
event was “expertly organised” considering it was planned
ENTIRELY by Year 11 Leadership prefects, with help from
Mrs Ridgeon. Thank you to everyone who came and
especially to those who asked questions. To conclude, here is
what some students who came to the talk thought:
“The Year 11 Leadership cluster excellently organised a
polarising Q&A sessions which captivated the minds of every
audience member”. Matteo Pocrnja 11A
“The talk gave us a valuable insight into politics and offered
a new perspective on current affairs. Very interesting and
definitely worthwhile”. Amy Peacock 11S
“I enjoyed the talk by the Rt Hon Grant Shapps. It was
informative and I found it to be a good insight into the world
of politics”. Rory Baxter 10A
“During the talk with Grant Shapps, I learnt many new things
about all sorts of politics and it really made me more
intrigued and eager to learn about the subject.” Kayleigh
Montague 10S

Holocaust Survivor Talk
Mrs C. Niazi, Philosophy & Ethics, writes:
On Thursday 22nd January, the
Philosophy and Ethics
Department chose to mark the
70th Anniversary of the liberation
of Auschwitz and Holocaust
Memorial Day by inviting in a
Holocaust survivor. Mr Henri Obstfeld spoke to Year 8s and 60
students in Year 10 about his experiences during World War 2.
Henri Obstfeld was born in Amsterdam on 11 April 1940, where
he lived with his mother who had worked as a secretary for the
Hoover vacuum cleaner company, and his father who ran a
slipper factory.
In May 1940 German troops occupied Holland and by 1942,
Jews in Amsterdam were being rounded up and sent to work
camps. Despite being only two years old, Henri’s parents
received papers directing him to present himself at a certain
time and place in Amsterdam with personal documents, a
rucksack and supply of food. It was undoubtedly a mistake but
as a precaution, Henri’s parents took him to his Uncle Dolek’s
and waited to see what would happen. The call up date passed
and no one came looking for Henri so his parents took him
home.
Henri’s parents were alarmed by this episode and they
managed to locate a Dutch couple living in Arnhem, Jakob and
Hendrika Klerk, who agreed to shelter Henri. In late summer
1942 Henri moved in with his new ‘aunt’ and ‘uncle’ and
changed his name to Hendrik Klerk. Friends and family were
told that Henri was a nephew whose parents had been killed in
the Luftwaffe bombing of Rotterdam. To this day Henri does not
know how his family found his new ‘foster’ parents.
Students found this talk enlightening and were fully engaged
with Henri’s account of what he experienced during World War
2:
‘From this talk I learnt that it was a hard life back in the war. It
shows how different life can be, it makes you think that we have
got the easy life’. Finlay Higgins (Year 8)
‘The bravery Henri must have had would have been much more
than I could ever have. The confidence Henri had to tell his
story is absolutely amazing’. Millie Johnson (Year 8)
‘On the day I learnt how lucky a person I am. I also learnt how
one moment can affect your life. Nevertheless this talk showed
us how lucky we are to go to school and to have freedom, such
as playing in your back garden, living with your parents and not
having to disguise yourself’. Jack Reed (Year 8)
‘It gave me an understanding of how bad life was for Jews. The
talk was very moving for everyone and it was especially
emotional when the speaker cried on the stage’. Holly Harvey
(Year 8)

Year 10 GCSE Catering Afternoon Tea event
Miss C. Burnham,
Curriculum Leader: Design
& Technology, writes:
On Wednesday the 14th of
January Miss Burnham’s
Year 10 GCSE Catering
group completed their first
Controlled Assessment task,
which was to plan, prepare,
serve and host an Afternoon
Tea. The students had spent
several weeks planning the
event, menu, table set up and
invites ready for the big
event. On the day, students
had 2 hours to make four dishes from scratch, set up,
decorate and lay their tables ready for the lucky staff and
parents whom they had invited. It was a great opportunity
for staff and parents to see the Catering students in full
action and experience the quality of food that had been
prepared.
Well done to the students for all their fantastic hard work
and professionalism in what was a stressful and nervous 2
hour exam!

E-safety Notice
We have been notified of a website
called Omegle which is a site that
allows individuals to talk to strangers.
The service randomly pairs users in a one-to-one chat.
Omegle also provides a video chat service and there have been a
large number of voiced concerns over the nature of the video’s
being displayed. As the service randomly selects two individuals
to chat, there is no control of what image the user may be faced
with.
Could we ask that you regularly speak to your son or daughter
about the dangers of social interaction on the internet. We
strongly believe that continual messages from home and school
can help safeguard our children.
