Day by Day Itinerary
Mon., July 13 – MINNEAPOLIS / EN ROUTE
We depart Minneapolis this evening by scheduled service of
Icelandair on the overnight transatlantic flight to Reykjavik,
Iceland.
Tues., July 14 – REYKJAVIK / HAARLEM
(HD)
As the sun begins to rise on the city of Reykjavik we arrive in
Iceland and change planes for the connecting flight to
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. On arrival we’ll meet our Tour
Escort who will accompany us throughout our vacation, and
then we’ll travel to nearby Haarlem, the commercial capital of
the Noord Holland province and the center of the Dutch
bulb-growing industry, where the remainder of the day is at
leisure.
Wed., July 15 – HAARLEM (Amsterdam)
(B,L)
Today we travel into the city of Amsterdam, often referred to
as one of the most colorful cities in the world. Although
Amsterdam can be divided into several distinct areas, our
morning tour will feature medieval Oude Zijde and Nieuwe
Zijde where most of the city sights can be found. We’ll begin
in historic Dam Square where we’ll see the two heraldic stone
lions that represent the Netherlands, the Royal Palace and
National Monument, commemorating Dutch World War II
casualties. We’ll also see the Church of Saint Nicholas, the
patron saint of seafarers, and the ‘Skinny Bridge’, the most
popular of Amsterdam’s 1,200 plus bridges, before stopping to
visit the Anne Frank House, where for two years during World
War II, the Frank and Van Daan families hid until their betrayal
to the Nazis. After lunch, we’ll enjoy a canal cruise aboard a
glass-top motorlaunch, a wonderful insight to the city’s maze
of canals, gabled merchant houses and humpback drawbridges
reminiscent of a Golden Age.
Thurs., July 16 – HAARLEM (Volendam & Marken) (B)
Today we return to the days of yesteryear when we travel to the
villages of Volendam and Marken. It was not until the late 19th
century that Volendam began drawing visitors, and only after
the renowned artists came to paint the Doolhof, an area of narrow
canals and streets behind the main dikes. While in Volendam
we’ll learn firsthand how the Dutch make their wooden shoes
and excellent cheeses, and witness residents wearing traditional
costume. The women are outfitted in tight bodices, winged lace
caps and striped aprons, while the men attire themselves in
baggy trousers and sweaters. Afterward, we’ll visit the nearby
fishing community of Marken, little changed over the last 200
years. Similar to Volendam, the local inhabitants of Marken
still wear traditional dress, and visitors are drawn by its
old-world character displayed in the gabled timber houses that
are painted in the rather somber shades of black and green.
Fri., July 17 – HAARLEM / MUNSTER (Arnhem) (B,HD)
This morning we depart Haarlem and travel to the city of
Arnhem, the capital of the province of Gelderland, filled with
a collection of beautiful parks and gardens. Sadly, Arnhem
became famous for its role in World War II when it was held
by British paratroops against overwhelming odds during the
airborne operation in 1944, until it proved to be “a bridge too
far” when it fell to the Germans. Early this afternoon we’ll be
on our way to the cosmopolitan city of Munster, Germany, with
a proud history going back more than 1,200 years. As we’ll
soon find out, Munster has kept its history very much alive –
and its houses, churches and squares tell plenty of stories about
the past.
Sat., July 18 – MUNSTER
(B)
This morning we’ll enjoy a walking tour that will take
us through the historical city center beginning in the
Prinzipalmarkt; a square surrounded by 48 gabled buildings,
including the distinctive Rathaus and the municipal wine
house. We’ll see St. Paul’s Cathedral and its best-known
treasure, the astronomical clock, a mechanical device from the
late Middle Ages that puts on a daily show at noon. We’ll also
take in the beautiful Erbdrostenhof mansion and tiny St.
Clement’s Church with its beautiful baroque garden, as well
as St. Lambert’s Church, an excellent example of the
hall-churches characteristic of Westphalia. Following our tour,
the afternoon is at leisure to explore Munster on your own.
Sun., July 19 – MUNSTER
(B)
The day is at leisure in Munster. Nearly all of Munster’s
important sights are within the Old Town, which is encircled by
the Promenade - a narrow green belt with bicycle and walking
paths that have replaced the old medieval walls of the late
1700s. The bicycle, also named “Leeze”, is the most
commonly used means of transport in Munster. No other city
in Germany has such a well-developed network of bicycle
paths; if you want to experience the true Munster feeling you
should get on a bike!
For those in search of family genealogy, travel back in time
and uncover traces of your ancestors. We’ll be happy to help
you arrange transportation so that you can visit your family’s
hometown, meet with distant relatives, and experience the lives
of your ancestors as you explore the beautiful countryside of
Westphalia’s Munsterland.
Mon., July 20 – MUNSTER / RUDESHEIM (Cologne) (B,HD)
This morning we depart Munster and travel to the city of
Cologne which revolves around its immense Cathedral,
a gothic masterpiece that overlooks the Rhine River. An
introductory tour will begin in the Old Town that has been
rebuilt in traditional style; an intriguing mix of old and new,
Cologne reveals its Roman heritage in the city layout and
ancient ruins that lie scattered throughout the town. We’ll also
take in Cologne’s modern plazas and Hohe-Strasse, a
pedestrian-only shopping zone that offers a variety of stores,
lively bars and enticing restaurants. Of particular note is the
city’s 14th-century Cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic
artistry. Spared Allied bombs during World War II, the
Cathedral’s lacy spires are visible for miles, and its stainedglass windows fill the interior with brilliant colored light. This
afternoon we’ll set our sights on the wine village of
Rudesheim, strategically located at the southern end of the
Rhine Gorge under the vine-clad hills of the Niederwald.

Tues., July 21 – RUDESHEIM (Rhine Cruise)
(B,RD)
This morning we’ll travel to the village of St. Goarshausen to
embark on a scenic cruise along the fabled Rhine River whose
vineyards descend from vines planted by Caesar’s legions. The
ruined fortresses standing high above the river were erected by
medieval kings, princes, bishops and robber knights, who built
more castles in the Rhine Valley than in any other valley in the
world. On our return to Rudesheim an afternoon at leisure will
allow you to seek out the town’s vineyards, as wine-growing
has a long tradition in Rudesheim and has established the
town’s reputation as a producer of acclaimed Riesling and
pinot noir wines. You may also enjoy a cable car ride to the
Niederwald Monument terrace for an excellent view of the
surrounding vineyards, or visit the fascinating Music Museum.
Tonight we’ll end our vacation in style with a farewell dinner
along the famous Drosselgasse, said to be Germany’s
best-known thoroughfare, lined with taverns where visitors and
locals congregate for music, wine and entertainment.
Wed., July 22 – RUDESHEIM / MINNEAPOLIS
(B)
This morning we depart Rudesheim and travel to Frankfurt
Airport in preparation for the return journey home. No better
time to reflect on memories of our vacation to last a lifetime
and celebrate the beginning of new friendships made along
the way!
