Overcoming Stereotypes of
Older Workers
T
hese days, 50-plus workers face brutal odds if they lose their
jobs. According to a Pew study, 44% of jobless workers 55 or
older had been unemployed for over a year in 2012. And while
older workers have a lower unemployment rate overall, the ones
who lose their jobs can find the long hunt for work very difficult.
In a 2009 report from the Sloan Center on Aging & Work,
hiring managers at state agencies listed a litany of stereotypes
to explain why they tend to reject older job seekers: They felt
these applicants were more likely to be burned-out, resistant to
new technologies, absent due to illness, poor at working with
younger supervisors, and reluctant to travel. Other studies have
stated that employers assume older applicants are less creative,
less productive,
slower mentally and more expensive to employ than early or
mid-career employees.
Peter Cappelli, a management professor at the Wharton School
of Business and coauthor of the 2010 book Managing the Older
Worker, has looked more closely at these stereotypes, pulling
together research from fields like economics, demography
and psychology. He determined that virtually none of these
stereotypes holds up.
When it comes to actual job performance, Cappelli says, older
employees soundly thrash their younger colleagues. “Every
aspect of job performance gets better as we age,” he declares.
“I thought the picture might be more mixed, but it isn’t. The
juxtaposition between the superior performance of older
workers and the discrimination against them in the workplace
just really makes no sense.” Older workers also score high in
leadership, detail-oriented tasks, organization, listening, writing
skills and problem solving — even in cutting-edge fields like
computer science. But perhaps the greatest asset older workers
bring is experience — their workplace wisdom. They’ve learned
how to get along with people, solve problems without drama
and call for help when necessary.
Considering changing careers? The process of reinventing
yourself is revitalizing — and it may be the smartest course
of action if you’re in a dying field. Start by identifying your
skills and passions — the essence of what makes you you.
At LifeReimagined.org, help is available to begin identifying
your passion and figuring out which jobs, industries and
environments would stoke that fire.
People working longer, economists agree, boosts overall
employment and gives the whole economy a little more gas.
By 2020, it is estimated that workers 55 and over will make
up 25% of the U.S. civilian labor force, up from 13% in 2000.
Putting a strategy in writing is an important form of personal
commitment, a tool to help ensure the necessary factors are
covered, and a gauge to track progress along the way. With
the encouragement, expertise and assistance from industry
professionals, policymakers and others dedicated to solving the
issues of aging, older generations can meaningfully improve
their long-term financial prospects, while creating a new model
of retirement for future generations to follow.

The New Year is a time to revisit the values
that guide who we are and what we do for
our community. We believe aging is a set of transitions that give older
adults opportunities for growing and learning, experiences to enjoy
and cherish, and challenges to be met and conquered. To support
older adults with these changes, we are committed to:
• Treating all with respect, dignity and compassion.

Residing in millage-supported communities:
• Recognizing the vitality, worth and contribution that older adults
bring to our community and to our organization.
• Providing responsive, creative, resourceful and client-centered
services and opportunities to the older adults in our community.
When you are as fortunate as we are to receive immense community
support, national recognition and training as a facilitator of
wellness programming and lifestyle enrichment, there becomes a
moral imperative to share those assets. We are one of the very few
organizations that can make wellness, education and enrichment
programming available to individuals 50 and older regardless of their
socioeconomic situation in life. There is an inherent belief at Four
Pointes that our programs, with their positive choices, can favorably
impact lifestyles - to the point of impacting the mortality of an older
adult.
January will usher in a new opportunity for our neighbors who
could not previously participate at the Center for Successful Aging.
Individuals outside of our traditional north Ottawa County
service area (supported by twelve municipalities*) will now
be able to become Associate Members! For an annual fee of
just $75, they can participate in all our wellness and programming
options. Class fees for Associate Members will be the same as for
traditional service area members – many at $1 per class!

Rolina’s Desk:
Rolina Vermeer
I
t’s the beginning of a brand new
year! Resolves and resolutions may
or may not be important to us, but every year we are sure to
think about what lies ahead. We have so many opportunities to
enjoy just being alive and living in the supportive and beautiful
environment I like to call “Paradise.” How will Paradise look
for you this year? I challenge you to think about one thing
you would like to add, change or revise a little in your life.
Personally, I want to turn off the television and read more
novels. I want to start an art journal. I want to….well…let’s
start with those two and see how it goes.
Of course, a really great way to take a good look at your daily
agenda is to think, “What am I doing for myself physically,
intellectually, socially and spiritually?” It’s a great personal
review, one which can be applied daily, weekly monthly and for
the year. What’s on your list? Hopefully, you can find satisfying
opportunities at Four Pointes. And of course, if you have a
great idea, please come in and talk to me about it! I am so
encouraged by the fine member leaders we have and would
love to help you with your ideas for activities here at the center.

What does successful aging mean to you?
Successful aging is something we talk about. It means continuing to do
things of value, not cluttering your day. We feel it’s important to stay
as healthy as you can. Health combined with continued exploration in
life helps keep you happy with yourself.
What was your biggest accomplishment this past year?
Frank: The biggest accomplishment has been engaging in healthy
lifestyle changes. Becoming more active and eating healthier has led
to better control of my blood sugar. Martha: I continue to expand my
sewing skills. In the last year, I constructed a wedding dress and two
bridesmaid dresses. Continuing to challenge yourself, even in the skills
you think you have mastered, is the best way to grow.
What’s at the top of your bucket list?
We look at life as a journey of opportunity. By taking things as they come, we
feel more open to change and the potential that surrounds us. I (Martha) completed
my master’s in geographic information science at age 55. The knowledge I gained through
that program launched me into a new career as a digital map maker, a profession that didn’t exist 20
years ago. You never know what the world has in store.
What’s your best “Daily Dose” to keep you feeling good?
Being able to get up and out of bed in the morning is always a great way to start the day; being
vertical is a good thing. We also approach each day with this motto – “Don’t react, don’t regret.”
