HAPPY, HAPPY 98th
Rita Hers turned 98 on 23 January, and we are sure you’ll agree that this lovely picture of her
sharing a special birthday moment with her carer Eunice Peter makes for a perfect front page
image. The wonderful lady celebrated her birthday with a whole group of loved ones at The
Living Cornerstone home where she now resides. (story continues on picture inset)
SAPS Knysna has observed a
significant increase in theft
out of motor vehicles in
Sedgefield over the last two
months and, though some
arrests have been made, they
are asking residents to be
vigilant and, of course,
careful what they leave
inside their cars.
“Perpetrators target vehicles
that are parked with
valuables inside. These items
includes car radios, GPS
systems, laptops, cellular
phones, cameras and
spectacles.” says Sergeant
Chris Spies
The incidents are sporadic at
this stage, but the streets most
affected are Cycad Street,
Kingfisher Drive, Watsonia
Street and Kiewietjie Street.
Patrols in the affected areas
have been increased and the
police are working closely
with the neighbourhood
watches to deal with this
challenge.
Rita was born in 1917 in the Free State,
and has had quite an exciting life including a stint of working in
Zimbabwe as a mission teacher.
Vehicle owners are reminded
to ensure that valuables are
kept out of sight of the public
when vehicles are parked. It
is also important to park
vehicles at places where
adequate lightning is
available.
A crime prevention operation
in Smutsville led to the arrest
of four suspects aged
between 25 and 36. These
arrests were made on
Thursday, 22 January after
information on suspected
stolen property was received
from members of the public.
The police searched four
houses in Luthango and
Montana streets. This
operation led to the recovery
of stolen items which were
duly confiscated.
This operation forms part of
continued efforts in
partnership with community
safety structures to deal with
At the ripe age of 70 she married Jan
Hers, who was not only a popular
character in Sedgefield, but also an
internationally acclaimed astrologer.
The couple had lots of happy times
together, sharing the last twenty three
years of Jan’s life in their home in the
village.
They shared a love for
caravanning and travelled far and
wide with the ‘Golden Oldies Caravan
Club’. Jan passed away in 2011.
Rita has long been an active member of
Sedgefield Christian Church, where
she still has many friends.
the increase in theft out of motor
vehicles in this area.
“We want to urge the community
not buy stolen items, but rather
report these criminals to the
police. All information will be
dealt with confidentially,” says
Spies.
... and your cash
The Knysna police arrested a 44-year-old suspect after he
allegedly used fake bank notes to purchase items at two
businesses in Knysna’s central business district on Thursday,
15 January 2015.
“We want to urge businesses and the public to carefully check
their bank notes following this arrest.
Counterfeit R100 notes were also in
circulation during 2014.
The public are requested
to immediately report
incidents where fake bank
notes are exchanged to the
police,” warns SAPS
Spokesman Sergeant Chris Spies.

I
f you love something, set it
free. If it comes back to
you, charge it rent and
make sure it does its fair share
of washing up.
What happened? I was supposed
to be wallowing in that warm and
fuzzy, sunshiny spot between
'Empty Nest Syndrome' and 'My
goodness, look at all this extra
space!'.
Alas, this is not the case. I don't
think I am EVER going to get
there….
You see, this January saw the
departure of my dear daughter
'Fear Factor'* to the Mother
City (*yes she is STILL learning
to drive, despite the efforts of the
traffic department to have her
declared 'Steeringly Challenged'
… come to think of it, I reckon
they may have made that up I
can't find it in any of Mrs Ed's
medical encyclopaedias. ).
I won't go into detail about the
move, other than it involving an
impressive convoy of trailers
and bakkies packed so high that
the lifting of power lines was
necessary.... and our arrival at
the quaint little flatlet instantly
causing the collapse of one poor
landlord. Poor, poor man.
But the deed is done and Fear
Factor is now firmly ensconced
in a small unsuspecting suburb
called Parow. We await reports
as to how quickly the drivers and
pedestrians residing in that area
manage to initiate a class action
restraining order against her.
So. You would have thought that
this move would mean a little
extra room in the T'ED
household, wouldn't you? Any
logically thinking person with
more common sense than a
taxidermist's squirrel can do the
maths:Family of four, minus one child
(2012) = Family of three.
Family of three, minus one child
(2015) = Family of two = Just
me and Mrs Ed = a lot of empty
rooms and cupboards and spare
towels.
And I have to shamefully admit,
it wasn't four minutes after the
last tearful promise to keep Fear
Factor's room exactly as she left
it (which, if you think about it
would be like leaving London
exactly as it was just after the
Blitz) that I started mentally
planning the installation of the
two-storey micro brewery which would undoubtedly save
us a huge amount of money over
the years, and, once we had sold
it to SAB, would probably make
me infinitely wealthy.
But that was just my idea, and I
knew it wouldn't be plain sailing.
Mrs Ed had her heart set on the
ridiculous notion of opening a
B&B.
“Think of the people we'll meet,”
she had mused, “It will be such a
nice way of making new friends
from all over the world.”
Now call me anything you like,
but I'm no idiot. The thought of
anyone paying good money to
stay amidst the chaos of our
home, actually socialize with
(and look at) the 7am version of
Mrs Ed (when her temper AND
teeth are at their sharpest), then
sit at a breakfast table and eat
food prepared by her calloused,
oil-stained hands…. Well it just
went against any smidgeon of
logic I had.
But I needn't have worried.
Because then the unexpected
happened....
'The REE' came back.
You might call it The REETURN.
Just in case you have forgotten,
The REE (Resident Expert on
Everything) is our son, who we
packed off to study in Cape
Town in 2012. At the time I had
thought, perhaps foolishly, that
The Sedgefield Community Orientated Policing (COP)
organisation has received a welcome donation that has taken
its efforts to curb crime hi-tech.
Recently ADT Security sponsored a state-of-the-art portable
surveillance camera that's equipped with night-vision capabilities,
on-board memory as well as video and photo sharing. Authorised
personnel - such as the Sector Manager of the local South African
Police Service and senior COP members - have immediate
wireless access to footage recorded by the camera.
“The camera will be moved regularly to monitor hotspots around
Sedgefield,” said Mike Hofhuis, Chairperson of Community
Orientated Policing Sedgefield . “We are extremely grateful to
ADT for their donation of this valuable crime-fighting
equipment.”
Arno Hattingh, Manager of ADT Security's Garden Route Branch,
said they are proud to have been able to help.
“We can only achieve positive results in efforts to curb crime if all
stakeholders and roleplayers including the public, community
safety groups, security companies and the police work together.”

parents from that sort of thing?
Otherwise it could carry on

I had even rehearsed my

he would no doubt be buying me
'Just as a thank you for
everything you and mom have
done'….
The wise old man just stared at
me. It was such a strange, deep
stare, if I hadn't known better I
would have sworn he had
actually WANTED the half
lasagna I had found on the
second shelf half an hour earlier.
Admittedly it had tasted very,
VERY good - even cold.
Apparently not. He's home.
It was quite unnerving actually.
Firstly Mrs Ed insisted I change
all the family photos back ( I had
pasted cut out pictures of a better
looking young man - WITHOUT
tattoos, stretcher earrings and a
pierced tongue - over The REE’s
photographs. Nothing sinister
about this action of course, it just
made conversations with visitors
that much more relaxed). And
then, because I hadn't had to use
the combination lock on the
fridge for so long, I only realized
I had forgotten the code once I'd
locked it.
I got myself into a huge panic
and was about to see if I could
break through the back of the
fridge with a four pound hammer
and chisel, when The REE came
home, opened the padlock and
started tucking into everything
he could lay his hands on.
Apparently the young
whippersnapper had cracked the
combination years ago! No
wonder my amber nectar had
started tasting a little watery.
“Is it legal? Can they actually do
that? You know… just move
back in?” I asked my father in
law later, as I took the last
Windhoek from his fridge. We
had just popped round to borrow
some of his power tools and
return the ones I'd broken, and
Mrs Ed was busy packing some
of the meat from their deepfreeze
into her basket (they always had
SO much!) whilst her mom was
hanging up the last few loads of
our washing (she does get the
whites that much whiter).
He grabbed my arm, quite tightly
for a man of his years, actually
“The best thing you can do,” he
whispered hoarsely (he's always
been a hoarsey person), “The
best thing you can do ….” Now
he was pulling me in closer,
digging his fingers so deep into
my flesh I almost dropped the
bowl of fruit-salad “…is
EMIGRATE!”
Putting his lips to my ears he
continued, and if the truth be told
I thought I detected a hint of
desperation in his voice…..
“Somewhere far, far away, like
Australia… or Peru…. and….
are you listening to me?” he
glanced over to where his wife
was busy ironing one of my
shirts, then turned back to me,
and positively hissed.
“Make sure you do
EVERYTHING YOU CAN to
stop your wife telling them
where you are! YOU
UNDERSTAND? This is most
important. You have to convince
her that it's A SECRET!”

NSRI SEA RESCUE REPORTS
KNYSNA:
Jerome Simonis, NSRI Knysna
station commander, said:
"At 16h52, Saturday, 24th
January, NSRI Knysna duty
crew launched the sea rescue
craft JAYTEE III and SPIRIT
OF KYC and a sea rescue vehicle
carrying NSRI rescue swimmers
was dispatched to Coney Glen,
Knysna, following eye-witness
reports of a drowning in
progress.
"WC Government Health EMS,
the SA Police Services, ER24
ambulance services and a Police
Dive Unit also responded.
"On arrival on-scene it was
found that a local man, believed
to be aged 34, had experienced
difficulties while swimming. It is
suspected that rough sea
conditions and rip currents may
have contributed to the man
getting into difficulty in the surf.
"It appears that bystanders,
unidentified to NSRI, were able
to recover the man from the
water and bystander CPR efforts
had been commenced.
"NSRI medics took over CPR
efforts and were joined by NSRI
Knysna’s station duty doctor but
despite CPR efforts the man was
declared deceased.
"The body of the deceased man
has been taken into the care of
the Forensic Pathology Services
and Police have opened an
inquest docket.
"Police trauma counsellors
assisted family members."
At 18h50, Sunday, 25th
January, NSRI Knysna duty
crew launched the sea rescue
craft JAYTEE III following
concerns by an NSRI Knysna
crewman, at Brenton on Sea,
witnessing two SUP (Stand Up
Paddleboarders) appearing to
not be making any headway
about a nautical mile off-shore
between Three Sisters and Castle
Rock, Brenton On Sea.
On arrival on-scene NSRI found
the two men, on 2 SUP’s, a 32
year old Johannesburg man and a
34 year old Sedgefield man, to be
tired and considering their
options as to whether to head
towards Knysna or turn around
and go back to Buffels Bay
(where they had originally
launched from) but in fading
light they had realised that either
way they were going to get to
wherever they decided to go well
after dark and already tired they
also faced exhaustion.
They only had on their baggy
shorts, a lighter and cigarettes
with them.
They could not head directly to
shore where the rocky shore
front in a 2 metre shore break
swell posed a risk.
NSRI took both men and their
SUP’s onto the sea rescue craft
and took them both to Knysna
without incident and once safely
in Knysna they required no
further assistance.
I mulled over this as I dolloped
four generous scoops of
icecream into my bowl...
“You know what dad? I think
you’re right,” I mused, finishing
the last bit of chocolate sauce,
“In fact I might even go so far as
to say..
I’d be mad if I didn’t!”
“I mean, surely,” I mused,

Gorgonzola into my mouth, and
chewing it thoughtfully, (my in-

COMMUNITY GENEROSITY
OVERWHELMS FIRE VICTIMS
Local social media has been
abuzz this past fortnight, with
kind Garden Routers making
huge efforts to assist the
Barnard family of Bosdorp,
Karatara, whose house was
raised to the ground on
Sunday 18 January. Their
plight only had to be
mentioned on the ‘Sedgefield
Locals’ and Knysna Gossip
Girls’ Facebook pages and
there was soon a stream of
donations in both cash and
material goods to help rebuild
the small family’s life.
The fire started during the
morning whilst Vicky and Jan
Barnard were at church, and is
said to have been the result of an
exploding gas bottle in the kitchen. Deon, the
couple’s teenage son, had fortunately managed to
escaped the blaze, but everything the family owned
went up in flames, and was
destroyed in minutes.
Above :- Vicky and Jan Barnard have been blown
away by the generosity of others. Below:- The
remains of their home lost to fire on Sunday 18
January. Pictures provided by Claudia Pirker.
We say a very sad goodbye to one of Sedgefield’s most
long-standing artisans, Anthony Webber of Anthony’s
Electrical, who passed away earlier this month. A
much-loved member of the business community, he was
first a family man. His daughter Shannon brought us
the following tribute.
Councillor Louise Hart rushed
to the scene when she heard the
news. She said that some
members of the community
watching the house crumble to
ashes had raised questions as to
why the fire brigade were
unable to extinguish the blaze,
but that the leader of the fire
crew had explained how
quickly such fires can destroy a
wooden home..
“He told them that nothing
would have saved the house,
even if the fire truck had been
parked directly in front it.”
Hart said she was grateful to the
staff from the Sedgefield Fire
Station as well as the law enforcement officers who
came out. When asked what had happened to the
volunteer fire team of Karatara she explained that
this had lost a bit of its momentum. ‘The volunteer
fire fighters were an initiative from the community.
I supplied R25 000 from my councillor allocation
in 2012 for the training and equipment, but when
we told the volunteers that they will only receive
payment when they are actually working, fighting
a fire, most of them lost interest and thus there are
only a few who still go for training.”
She also pointed out that other aspects regarding
fire prevention need to be dealt with, especially
regarding the protection of the fire hose boxes the
Municipality has placed at strategic points around
the Bosdorp. “There is a fire hose box directly in
front of the house,” she said, “but it has been
vandalised a number of times so is not operational.
The community have requested that I inform them
via a public meeting as soon as we have a plan to
sort out this problem.” In the interim she is
determined to establish who of the voluntary
firefighters are still active and do a drive for more
members.
On the forefront of the drive to assist the Barnards
were Claudia Pirker and Charmaine Kruger who
selflessly collected and delivered goods, organised

wished to help. Claudia kept all the donors
informed as to the progress of the collective effort
via the facebook sites, frequently posting huge
thanks on behalf of the Barnards who are currently
staying with their friends Hester and Ben Stander.
“It is with a HEAVY heart that
I have to announce the passing
of our Dad, Husband, Oupa,
Brother, Uncle and Friend.
Anthony Webber (Tony/
Anthony’s Electrical)
He struggled with cancer and
passed on the 14th January
2015.
He managed his disease like a
champ, he amazed us with his
strength and humour, right to
the end. He was a charmer, a
gentleman, humble, honest,
special, a loving person with
not a selfish bone in his body.
He never complained,
he was always there for
you with an amazing
can do attitude.
We are overwhelmed by
all the souls he touched.
People who only knew
him for a few hours were
moved by his nature. A
little man with such a big
heart, soul, vice grip hand shake
and a bear hug that would make
anyone feel special.
His wish in life was for music,
love and laughter.”
The memorial service
for Anthony Webber (Tony) is
to be held on Saturday 31st
January 2015, 10:00am @ St
Francis United Church,
Sedgefield.
Though trying their utmost to stay out of the
limelight, (we had to push to be able to use their
names) there’s no doubt that both Claudia and
Charmaine feel blessed to have been part of this
impromptu project, not only being blown away by
the generosity of others, but also seeing the
reaction on the Barnards’ faces. Claudia said that
on one visit Vicky had told her "When you have
nothing, a teaspoon is a big gift" and that Jan had
been so moved, he could barely talk without crying.
“What a wonderful family we have met,” she said,
“They were so grateful that they were moved to
tears. Thank you to each and everyone who is
helping them rebuild their life with your donations,
no matter how big or small. ”
And big and small they were. Everything from a
dish washing machine to a fridge to mugs and
plates to a lounge suite to clothing to kitchen
utensils to beds to linen – such generosity from
such a small, caring community.

WHAT THEY WANT TO BE......
In keeping with our annual tradition, we asked Melanie Baumeister to
visit Laerskool Sedgefield Primary School to interview the new children
in grade one. The brave lady asked each child the same questions.
“What’s your name, and what do you want to be when you grow up?”
Well, she certainly got an interesting array of answers, and it will be
interesting to look back in 18 years or so to see how many of them
accomplished their dream careers.....

KNYSNA MUNICIPALITY UPDATES
WATER : Sedgefield & Karatara
The water situation in Sedgefield has been stable for quite a
while now.
The Greater Knysna had sufficient water
throughout the festive season. Sedgefield’s rainfall increased
from 2.5mm (15 - 21 December 2014) to 14mm (12–18 January
2015).
The Karatara dam was 99% full in December and 100% full in
January 2015. The rainfall increased from 4mm (15–21 December)
to 18mm (12–18 January 2015).
Although the Greater Knsyna Area is not faced with a water crisis
now, all residents are still urged to use water sparingly and
responsibly especially during the warm summer season.

Most of the potholes in
Sedgefield’s designated
roads were fixed before the
festive season.
However, the municipality

‘All the World’s a Stage!’
By Rhett Herringbone
Last night The Farce Side
drama group,
under the
u m b re l l a o f S e d g e f i e l d
Amateur Dramatics Society,
started the first rehearsals for
this year's farce - 'A Mad
Breakfast'.
Bringing laughter to this little
town in the middle of winter is
the prime aim of The Farce Side
and, of course, to make some
money for the local Laerskool
Sedgefield Primary School.
This initiative led by Melanie
Baumeister, which launched last
year with the very popular 'Suite
Surrender', is one of the newer
fund raisers at the school. It
builds on the successes of the
school's own epic plays with
casts of 180 children (Peter Pan
in 2012 with Val Roulston as the
Director, Charlie and The
Chocolate Factory which had
Christelle Robertson as
Assistant Director in 2013, and
last year's brilliant pieces
starring our own Cliff Daniell in
the title role of The Gruffalo, and
the incredibly imaginative
execution of Alice in
Wonderland.)
'It's a small way of bringing joy
to our lives, the children benefit
in so many ways from learning
to speak confidently in front of
large groups, to how to follow
the protocol of the theatre, and in
turn any formal public space'
said Melanie.
“The opportunities created here
are just like the opportunities in
larger cities and towns, just on a
smaller scale, why should our
children be denied simply
because we live in the
'platteland'?”
Adhering to the Constitution of
the Sedgefield Amateur
Dramatics Society, The Farce
Side plans to bring more good
clean fun to the stage in May
with 'A Mad Breakfast' by I.M.
Gray. Once again the hall will
sport
an auditorium-style
setting - pre-booked rows of
seats (not the picnic style of
Barnyard and our own
Melodrama) and those with a
love of theatre fun should watch
the press for when tickets
become available.
According to Baumeister the

"Each kiosk will be equipped

Wolmarans explained. "These
include but are not limited to
account enquiries, customer

Customers will also receive a

that their service request or

Wolmarans said that making

placed at specific, predetermined spots in Knysna and
surrounds, the first of which will
be located at Masifunde Library
and the Khayalethu and Hornlee
offices. Roll out to other
locations will be made public at a
later date."
"We realise that the only way
many of our residents have of
communicating with us, is by
actually coming down to the
customer care centre or the
relevant department's office,"
she said. "But making this
process as convenient as
possible for the customer is part
of 'customer care'. We believe
that the convenience these
kiosks offer will improve service
delivery and contribute towards
building and improving on our
relationships with our
customers. This initiative is only
one of our efforts to make this

include some new faces, each
one with their own gift that is
bound to be the making of loads
of entertainment.
“ If you'd like to see who made
the cast please feel free to pop in
to the rehearsals on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings at the school
hall,” she said, “ At first they
may be as dull as dishwater to

you'd prefer the surprise then

The Farce Side also has some

4th house needed for TLC
Due to the exceptionally high
demand for this sort of
f a c i l i t y, T h e L i v i n g
Cornerstone (TLC) is
urgently in need of a fourth
house.
Gilda Scammel, who initiated
and now runs these hones for
Altzheimer’s sufferers with the
aid of her committee, explains
“We have 20 residents in 24hr
care and a waiting list of 16
people (with five people being
added this past week.) We have
even had our carers looking
after people in their private
homes.”
She said that doctors in George
are recommending patients to
TLC, which has a good
reputation for being a caring
home and not just ‘another
institute’.
“We're receiving enquiries from
all over the Garden Route and
need help from the community
of Sedgefield. Please open your
hearts and purses to our worthy
cause,” Gilda adds. “Our heart
and vision is to be on a farm, with
seven houses each
accommodating six residents
and a housekeeper, a real home
from home”.
Our staff are trained as
caregivers by an accredited
establishment in George. They
also attend workshops given
by Dementia SA.
TLC relies on Prayer, Faith,
donations, sponsorships and
fundraising. We do make a
difference in the lives of the
people in our care and with the
community's help we can and
will grow and prosper.
FIXED PROPERTY VERSUS INVESTMENTS
I regularly receive calls
and questions both
from clients and
readers from this
publication on the
opportunity costs of
property investments
versus listed
investments (linked
investments, unit trusts,
shares, etc). The
question is usually
“Should I consider
selling my property
where I am earning a
rental income, and
invest the proceeds in an
i n v e s t m e n t f o r pote
ntially higher long-term capital
growth and income?”
At the outset, let me state
categorically that there are no
quick answers to these questions
and that every case needs to be
looked at on an individual basis,
and no two situations are the
same. What we can do, however,
is identify some of the major
points for consideration which
will give you a better idea of what
you need to explore together with
your Financial Adviser.
Lets first define the two asset
classes and attempt to find a way
of comparing them:
PROPERTY:
Advantages
• Provides rental income and
• Over time, should also
provide capital growth
Challenges
• Fixed property is a single
asset class, and difficult to
diversify
• By definition an illiquid asset
when selling it a) takes time to
sell and b) even longer to receive
the proceeds from the sale, c)
selling usually incurs a fairly
higher agent's commission
(unless you sell privately).
• Ongoing maintenance costs Should your tenants not pay you
or damage your property, you
could find yourself significantly
out of pocket
• As the owner you carry any
vacancy risk i.e. if your tenant
defaults or you do not have a

tenant, your rental income
can be compromised
INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO
Advantages
• Very liquid easy to withdraw
part of or all of the investment.
• Can draw regular income
• Diversification into a number
of asset classes
Challenges
• Subject to market volatility
We recommend that you try
avoiding making a decision based
on emotion it is vital that you
look at all the facts and figures to
allow for a more accurate
decision. Many of us develop
emotional attachments to our
properties. Make use of a neutral
person, such as your Financial
Adviser to ensure an unbiased
approach.
Determine the investment
horizon and liquidity of your
investment all financial
Investments decisions must
factor in the term and underlying
liquidity of the investment. As an
example, property, by definition,
is a long term, illiquid asset,
whilst an investment portfolio,
might have a shorter-term
investment horizon and be more
liquid.
Is your financial portfolio
diversified amongst the various
asset classes? In building and
maintaining our investment
portfolios, we need to ensure that
there is a healthy balance

specific advice in a
generic medium, such
as an article, but here
are some of the factors
that your advisor will
take into account
when considering this
question: •
The property value
• The gross (before any costs
and taxes) rental income that you
will receive, expressed as your
annual yield
• Any applicable costs, such as
rates and taxes, maintenance,
insurance
• The long term average
growth in property values in your
area, and the expectations on
potential growth in rental income
These then need to be evaluated
relative to
• The long term anticipated
returns of investments for your
specific risk profile
• Historic asset class returns
and the cyclical nature of these
classes
• Prevailing interest rates and
the expectation of interest rate
movements and where we are in
the cycle.
The above process is by no means
prescriptive, but ensure that all
the quantifiable variables need to
be considered and evaluated.
Regardless of the nature of your
investment, risk is unavoidable
and an ever-present, so the more
information you can provide, and
the more accurate your
assumptions, the better an idea of
the relative opportunity costs
facing you. Remember, the past
performance of assets will not
necessarily reflect future returns,
so to ensure you are making an
informed decision, use the
expertise of your Financial
Advisor throughout the process.

Dear Sir,
Open letter to SANPARKS
I hereby wish to express my
outrage at the recent excessive
increase in boat/vessel fees
imposed by the local branch.
The fee for a 30hp motor went up
from R140.00 to R385.00. This
equates to an increase of 173%.
I have established that the
Authorities at Keurbooms River
charge R210.00 pa.
Breede river R212.00 pa and
Gourits R175.00pa.
From this you can see the local
charges are a total rip off and
probably unconstitutional.
We as boat owners in the Garden
Route are seeking legal advice.
We have also brought this to the
attention of various Angling and
Boating magazines.
I look forward to your comments
and what remedial action you
intend to take.
Mr. W.P.Versfeld.
The above letter has been
forwarded to SANPARKS for
have promised to respond.
Dear Editor
SEDGEFIELD VERGES
I was so disappointed. As a
resident of long standing, despite
two phone calls to the
Municipality suggesting they
should spruce up the verges
along the N2 at both ends of
town. Nothing was done! These
calls were made in early
December before the tourist
onslaught.
In my opinion Sedgefield looked
shabby and rundown. Not a good
reflection on our Municipality.
Look at George and the
Wilderness and take a page out
of their book! Now that the
tourists have left, cutting is
taking place!
Brigitte Edgington.
The Editor,
How about you do some simple
investigative journalism into
whom if any complained about
the Christmas lights in
Sedgefield. To help you, find the
only possibilities, below
(excluded for obvious reasons).
Knysna Municipality generally
do nothing over complaints, as in
this case.
Please give feedback.
Brian Hart (non complainant)
Dear Mr Hart,
Thank you for the long list of
‘potential complainers’. I fear,
however, that even if I manage to
track down each and every one
of them, there is little chance of
anybody owning up to causing
the discontinuation of the
Christmas lights.
The good news is that the
Municipality team has suggested
that in future they will handle
such ‘decisions’ through the
local Ward Committees. It is my
hope that the village ward
committee will ask for the lights
to be returned in 2015 - in time
for the season.
Regards
Editor.
Dear Editor,
I am writing to you, as I have
tried every other option with no
result. I fear injury to myself, or
any other person who uses this
car park. For two years now I
have tried to have this problem
sorted, which is a house on
Claude Urban Drive which has
violated the law, by making a bed
of bushes right up to the road ' s
edge, and they are intended to
grow much higher as there are
sticks in place.
As the exit to this small car park,
has a dip before exiting to the
road, it is very difficult without a
run up to get onto the road.
Now as it's impossible to see
what is coming along the road,
without putting the front of your
vehicle out on the road, and I
have had some near collisions,
had I not rolled back again.
Now this owner is living in JHB,
and does not visit often, and
although the garden is tended,
they have no idea what a danger
this extra garden is, also
pedestrians must walk in the road
to pass it.
R e g a r d s
Sedgefielder.
Dear Ed,
Subject: A New
Year Smile :
How to stay safe
in the world this
year
1. Avoid riding in
cars because they
are responsible
for 20% of all
fatal accidents.
2. Do not stay home because
17% of all accidents occur in the
home.
3. Avoid walking on streets or
sidewalks because 14% of all
accidents occur to pedestrians.
4. Avoid traveling by air, rail, or
water because 16% of all
accidents involve these forms of
transportation.
5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of
all deaths occur in hospitals.
Above all else, avoid hospitals.
You will be pleased to learn that
only .001% of all deaths occur in
Sunday worship services in
church, and these are usually
related to previous physical
disorders. Therefore, logic tells
us that the safest place for you to
be at any given time in 2015 , is
at church!
Bible study is safe too. The
percentage of deaths occurring
during Bible study is even less.
So - for your own safety, attend
church and Bible study
regularly. It could save your life!

Dear Sir
PARKING OF TRUCKS IN
SEDGEFIELD
The load on the axles of any
vehicle is a significant factor
which dictates how much
damage a vehicle will do to the
roads it uses. A truck may have
axle loads of several tonnes,
compared with a private car
which probably has less than one
tonne. Major roads like the N2
are generally speaking designed
to take account of this, but within
a town like Sedgefield, roads are
not built to take such loads and
trucks using these roads are a
significant cause of damage – to
verges, roundabouts, and they
help make pot-holes, of course.
Those of us who drive around
Sedgefield will have noted that
large, heavy trucks drive (and
park) where they want. The

TSiBA SETTING AN EXAMPLE OF SUSTAINABILITY

for the 2015 academic year
which starts on 2 February.
In her welcoming address the
campus' Rural Director, Sandy
Ueckermann, emphasized
TSiBA's continuing drive to
become financially more selfsufficient by reducing the donor
contribution to become more
self-sustainable. TSiBA Eden
aims to generate 30% of its own
income in 2015. Each year
TSiBA Eden offers 85 full tuition
scholarships to learners who
cannot access tertiary education,
due to lack of funds. Students
don't pay for their scholarships
but pay it forward into the local
communities.
TSiBA's non-donor income
stream is earned by providing
professional training and
mentoring to institutions who
recruit employees whose
potential needs to be developed
on the job. Last year the Campus
ran a training programme for the
Knysna Municipality. At a
function held at Pezula on

appreciation to supporters of
TSiBA Eden, the Acting

about the success of that
programme, and TSiBA is
looking to recruit more of the

WHAT SORT OF LIGHT
BULB?
Because I'm an electrical
engineer, I sometimes get asked
about the best sort of light to use
around the house. Thanks to
our beloved Eskom these
queries have become more
frequent, so I thought I'd offer a
few thoughts on the topic.
The incandescent globe has
been around since the 1830s
and it really hasn't changed
much in the last 50 years. It
gives what is called “warm”
light, which makes whatever it
is lighting look more attractive.
It has two main drawbacks. It
uses a relatively large amount
of electricity and it doesn't have
a particularly long life.
Compact fluorescent lamps
(CFLs) were developed in the
1970s in response to an energy
crisis.
Fluorescent light
technology was developed in
the 1890s and CFLs use much
the same principle. The main
benefits of a CFL are that it uses
about 30% of the energy used
by a conventional globe for the
same light and it can last about
five times as long. On the
downside, they need a
controlled means of getting rid
of them when they have expired
and this is not always easily
available. There's quite a lot of
criticism of the health hazards
of CFLs. My
r e s e a r c h
suggests that
t h i s
i s
exaggerated and
that the impact
o n
t h e
environment is
less, because
they need less
electricity, and
b e c a u s e
disposal can be
managed.
Light Emitting
Diodes (LEDs)
are the most recent arrival.
They're based on technology
discovered in the 1900s, but have
really only started to become
available for domestic use in the
last five years. They are much
more energy efficient they use
about 20% of the energy that an
incandescent globe uses and
they have a much longer life,
typically 15 times that of a
conventional globe. This makes
them cost effective in the long
run. Finally, they don't have the
environmental problems of
CFLs when you throw them
away. They're much more
expensive and the colour of
the light they produce is not
attractive.
Dimming is
another issue. All of these
factors are changing, though,
and I'd expect them to
become the product of choice
in the next five years.
One final thought about LEDs.
They need a low voltage source
of direct current so each globe
has to have a converter built
into it. If I were building a new
house I'd be inclined to design
the wiring so that it can use
12V DC electricity derived
from a central power converter.
What all this says, I suggest is
that the lay person should seek
expert advice before making
potentially expensive choices.
WESSA The Layman's Guide to Invasive Alien Vegetation in our region
Southern Cape Weeds Forum : Solanum mauritanium (Bugweed)
By Ena & Bob McIntyre Garden Route Branch.
Bugweed (Solanum
mauritanium) - origin South
America - is a category 1b
weed thought to have been
introduced as a garden plant.
S. mauritanium was first
reported as showing invasive
tendencies in KZN in the
1860's. Since, it has spread all
along the coast to the Cape.
Apart from the unripe fruits
being poisonous, the fruit acts as
a host to the fruit fly with
obvious negative implications
for the deciduous fruit industry.
Birds are attracted to the fruit
and are unaffected by the poison.
DOGS
Knysna Animal Welfare Society has a cattery full of gorgeous cats
and kittens and a wonderful selection of dogs of all shapes and
sizes, all ready to move into your home and into your heart. You
can see the full selection on www.knysnakaws.com or visit the
kennels at 1 Marlin Street, Hunters Home, Knysna to select your
new furry friend. Phone 044 3841603 for further details.

Where bugweed
occurs in young
plantations, fruit
eating birds perch
on young pine
trees, breaking the
growing tips
causing deformed
growth. It has also
been noted that
where the plants
occur, birds appear
to have developed
a preference for the bugweed
seed over seeds of indigenous
trees and shrubs. Consequently
birds are acting as seed
dispersers for the weed with
negative consequences for
biodiversity in general and
local forestry.
Identification: Solanum
mauritanium is a fast-growing
shrub or small scraggly tree
with large dull grey-green
leaves, velvety above and
white felty undersides making
the plant easily identifiable. All
parts except older stems are
also covered with whitish-felty
hairs. Clusters of purple
flowers occur throughout the
year. The fruits are born in
compact terminal clusters of
berries of 10mm across,
turning yellow when ripe.
Common along degraded roadsides, plantation logging tracks
and water-courses Bugweed is
often confused with the
indigenous Solanum
giganteum (Healing-leaf tree).
Very similar in appearance,
S . g i g a n t e u m i s re a d i l y
identified when not in fruit by
short straight spines on the
stems and branches and when
in fruit - bright red ripe fruits as
opposed to S.mauritanium's
yellow fruits.
Control: Foliar herbicide
application is impractical due
the rapid growth, as the foliage
is generally out of reach.
Felling the plants and treating
the stump with the herbicide
Timbrel is very effective.
Alternatively frill the stump
and treat the frill with Timbrel.
Any clearing must have a
follow up program to address
seed germination that will
occur. On the biological
control front two leaf-feeding
beetles released in 1992 are
showing very good results.
Mechanical clearing dislodges
clouds of the fine hairs on
stems and foliage which is
reported to contain toxins
blamed for respiratory
problems in workers exposed
to the dust.

Municipality welcomes new Fire Chief Officer KNYSNA MUNICIPALITY HAS NO CONTROL
Knysna Municipality welcomed Mr Clinton
WHEN IT COMES TO LOAD SHEDDING
Manuel to its fold as the new Fire Chief Officer
on 2 January this year. Manuel hails from Cape
Town, where he had been appointed as
Divisional Commander in training at Cape
Town Fire Rescue Services.
"I joined the Cape Town Fire Rescue Services as a
fire fighter in 1988 and started working my way
through the ranks," said Manuel. "I have also
completed a senior certificate with the South
African Emergency Services Authority, a National
Diploma: Fire Service Technology from the Cape
Peninsula University of Technology and a
Bachelor's degree in Management at the University
of Cape Town."
"I am extremely passionate about training and staff
development," he continued. "In my previous
position I was involved with the Local Government
Sector Education Training Authority (LGSETA) as
a Fire Service Instructor, Assessor, Moderator and
Verifier. And, if at all possible, I would like to
continue my association with LGSETA in
developing formal qualifications and training
programs that would, at the end of the day, improve
service delivery."
"In addition to staff training, I aim to start off by
setting a standardised shift system for employees,"
he continued. "By negotiating with the relevant
unions, we hope to institute a proper system that
will deliver a 24-hour service to the greater Knysna
area."
"There are a few challenges that will need to be
addressed, including attaining more modern
equipment. But all in all I am looking forward to
working with the team to improve on our level of
service delivery."
Community Services Portfolio Chairperson Irene
Grootboom said that she was pleased with Manuel's
appointment, and that his previous experience and
education more than qualified him for the position.
"We are very lucky that Mr Manuel decided to
relocate to Knysna from Cape Town. I am certain
that our Fire Department will flourish under his
leadership and I wish him well in this new
position."
Manuel explained that he used to visit Knysna in
Knysna Municipality has
received numerous enquiries
from residents and businesses
regarding load shedding. Load
shedding occurs when Eskom
declares an emergency. Once
the emergency is declared the
stage (1, 2 and 3) of load
shedding applied by Eskom is
based on the generation that is
required country wide.
Chairperson of the Planning,
Infrastructure and Development
Committee, Councillor Louisa
Hart said “the load shedding
schedule is available on our
website and residents are also
welcome to contact the
municipality for it. However it is
important to note that we do not
have a say when it comes to load
shedding, Eskom is solely
responsible and makes all the
decisions.”
“We can only inform the public if
Eskom notifies us timeously and
communicates with us as to
which stage of load shedding
they will be implementing. At
times we are told there will be
load shedding, but it does not
occur or it occurs at a later or
different time. So it is extremely
difficult to be 100% correct".
"We appeal to everyone to
continuously save electricity by
switching of all non-essential
appliances”, Ms Hart concluded.

In response to the

We s t e r n C a p e
Government

reminding people
of the following
guidelines to help
prevent heat
stroke and
exhaustion:
TE’D’S cryptic brain cruncher
NOTE:
· Babies, the elderly and people
working or exercising in a hot
environment are at particular risk
for heat stroke/exhaustion.
· People using chronic
medication need to drink extra
water during heat waves to
ensure that their kidneys are not
further stressed.
GENERAL PREVENTION
(ALL AGES)
• Stay out of the sun if at all
possible, if not
• Wear a large hat to protect the
head from the sun, use an
umbrella to add shade
• Use a small wet towel or cloth
under hats or on shoulders to help
keep cool
• Stay hydrated – in the current
temperatures, staying hydrated is
most important – drink as much
water as you need;
• Always carry water with you
• Should you use chronic
medication, such as high blood
pressure or diabetes medication
remember that becoming
dehydrated places extra stress on
the kidneys, drink ample clean
water
• Use the Rehydration Solution if
you are thirsty even though you
are drinking water:
Mix the following together in a
clean bottle 1l water, 8 teaspoons
sugar and ½ a teaspoon of salt.
This is safe for all ages to drink
especially for those people who
work or exercise outdoors, such as
children practising athletics and
road or farm workers.
•· Ensure that the elderly and
infirm have easy access to water
TIPS FOR BABIES
Breastfeed on demand - breast
milk is all that babies younger
than 6 months require, you need
not give the baby water or tea to
‘cool down’ they only need
breast milk.
• Breast feeding moms must
remember to drink extra water.
Cold rooibos tea also makes a
refreshing and healthy drink.
• Avoid sports activities if
possible, if sport is essential;
ensure that there is a lot of water
and re-hydration solution
available.
• Children must wear hats and
sunblock
• Keep children indoors between
11:00 and 16:00
TIPS FOR THOSE
WORKING OUTSIDE
This is for sports people, teachers
and/or coaches and employers of
builders, gardeners and others
required to work outside:
• Keep your head covered, place a
wet cloth under your hat to help
keep cool
• Make sure that there is lots of
cool, clean water to drink
• Take your baby to the clinic at
the first sign of Diarrhoea and/or
vomiting
• Take regular, short breaks in the
shade When taking a break, pour
water over your head to help the
body cool down
• Keep babies in the shade or
indoors
S Y M P T O M S O F H E AT
EXHAUSTION/STROKE
• Wipe baby down with a clean
damp cloth – this will help keep
them cool
Heat stroke can be fatal and
should be treated as a medical
emergency. Heat exhaustion is a
less severe condition but can
quickly progress to heat stroke if
left untreated. Heat exhaustion
and heat stroke occur when the
body is unable to lower its
temperature to normal levels
through the skin or by sweating.
Dehydration can cause heat
stroke because the body is unable
to sweat fast enough to dissipate
the heat.
• Do not cover babies in a lot of
clothing and blankets; light
clothing is sufficient.
Older Children
• Keep babies and children in the
shade
Did you know: That Hospice
runs Support Groups for
children of patients?
Signs of heat exhaustion include:
• Nausea or vomiting
We would like to say a big thank you to every one for their fantastic
support over the holiday season. We received many generous
donations which in turn ensured that the shop was full of exciting items
for our visitors and locals alike.
The book, cake and plant sale on the 19th of December was a great
success, thank you to all of the bakers out there. On that note if you
enjoy baking then please contact us and donate a cake to our next sale
later on in the year. Some of our regular supporters have moved away
and it has left Hospice short of cake makers.
We have two white wedding dresses in the Sedgefield shop at present
so if you know of any one getting married, suggest they call in and
have a look. They have beautiful embroidered bodices and come with
veils.
On the last note Hospice can only accept electrical goods if they are in
working order. Unfortunately we do not have any one that can do
repairs for us and if the item is not in working order we have to dispose
of it.
Hospice would like to wish you all a very Happy, Healthy 2015, and
hope to see you soon.

Remember: Children under
two years are at high risk of
dehydration which can lead
rapidly to very dangerous
conditions. This is even more
dangerous if a child has
diarrhoea and/or vomiting. Use
the sugar-salt-solution while
you seek medical attention at
your nearest clinic or
emergency unit.

KNYSNA SAILORS TOPS IN HOBIE 14 CHAMPS
The Sailing Secretary at
Knysna Yacht Club, Andrew
Finn said he felt that the Hobie
14 Championships held over 3
days at Knysna Yacht Club
had been a great success.
Day one, on Friday 16th January,
produced very strong winds,
gusting up to 27 or 28 knots
(mph) which made sailing
challenging. Had the race been a
normal club race it would
probably been cancelled, but it
was held none the less.
Two
Hobie Cats were dis-masted, and
a number of capsizes took
places. The rescue boats were
kept very busy.
Saturday dawned, with good
weather and a moderate to strong
wind, and the mercury being
lower, it was a great deal more
comfortable for everyone. By
the end of the day the 22 boats
entered had been sorted out over
the two days sailing, and the
order was as follows: 1st Blaine
Dodds, 2nd Declan Nurse, 3rd
Don Brink, 4th Don Tait and 5th
William Edwards.
On Sunday the final day of the
Championships dawned bright
and sunny with light wind. The
forecast promised more wind to
come, and the racing was on
again, with a course set further
toward the Heads, using a
Committee Boat as a Bridge.
Competitors, had come from far
and wide, Cape Town to Port
Elizabeth and Durban, while
there were entries from Richards
Bay and
L a k e
Denysville
on the Vaal
River as
well. There
was a strong
representatio
n for the
K n y s n a
Area, and by
14:30 on
Sunday a
total of 10
races had
b e e n
completed,
allowing two
discards.
The final
results,
which were
achieved
sailing in
moderate
winds and
g o o d
weather, were: 1st Blaine
Dodds, 2nd William Edwards,
3rd Don Tait, 4th Declan Nurse,
5th Nick Ryall, 6th Douglas
Edwards and 7th Don Brink.
The first four all being Knysna
Yacht Club members was a
triumph for Knysna.
The
leading competitors said it has a
very enjoyable and well
organised Championship.
A young Knysna Development
sailor, Bhekumuzi Hani, was
sailing a Hobie 14 provided on
loan from the Western Cape
Above : Knysna Junior
Development sailor Bhekumuzi
