Saltford Primary School Newsletter
Issue no 20
Friday 6th February 2015
Message from the Headteacher
Good Afternoon everyone, I hope you are all having a lovely week.
I really enjoyed spending time with Class ED this week. They were using their reading skills
to discover facts about the Space Race. The class were so enthusiastic about their reading
and enjoyed sharing all they had learnt. Great work Class ED, I was really impressed.
This week in our whole school assembly I shared a letter with the children written by Oscar S
in Class GD. I have attached the letter Oscar wrote to Cancer Research UK with the
newsletter and the reply from their scientist Amy. Well Done Oscar for following your
interests in such an inspirational way. We will look forward to hearing about Oscar’s meeting
with their team and will certainly welcome the offer of setting up a lab at our school for the
day. Watch this space!
Pancake Race - Shrove Tuesday this year falls on Tuesday 17th February, the day before the
Christian season of Lent begins. This year, as is our tradition at Saltford, we will be holding
pancake races in each Key Stage during the morning of Friday 13 th February. Children who
would like to take part should bring a frying pan to school with a made pancake in it, all in a
carrier bag. Some children like to bring a spare pancake! The pancakes and frying pans
should be brought to class and teachers will tell children where to keep them. Please do not
hand them in at the office. This traditional event is always very enjoyable and we hope that as
many children as possible will bring a pancake and take part.
Have a lovely weekend.

Tuesday 10th February with the slogan ‘Let’s create a better internet
together’.
At Saltford school each class will be reviewing their knowledge and
understanding of e-safety. We will be providing the children with e-safety
focused lessons and assemblies too. Please take this opportunity to review
your own e-safety at home by checking the e-safety section of the school website and websites such
as those detailed below:

English
As one of the core subjects, English is always one of our key focuses at school. As reported to you at
the beginning of the year we started in September with a whole day of staff training to look at inspiring
and motivating all learners in English, focussing especially on reading and writing.
The hard work continues in all classrooms across the school and, next term, we are coming together
for our Reading Theme Week based around ‘Outdoor Adventures.’ This will run in the week beginning
9th March.
The week will kick off with school hosting local author Steve Voake (The
Dreamwalker’s Child, Hooey Higgins series, Daisy Dawson, series) on
Monday who will be discussing his work with the whole school and running
writing workshops with some of our classes. The children will have the
opportunity after school to buy a signed copy of Steve’s books.
Throughout the week classes will
undertake various reading based
activities in class, inspired by
ideas from The Dangerous Book
for Boys and The Daring Book for
Girls, there will be a cross phase
afternoon where the children will
work in their house groups and
class swaps where teachers will
be on tour- sharing their favourite
books with a different class.
We will spend the week exploring our reading environments with
competitions for the best in class reading dens and transforming the unused
outdoor changing room into a ‘jungle reading hide.’
The week will culminate with a reading themed mufti day to raise money for
Red Nose Day and an exhibition for parents in the hall after school sharing
some of the children’s work from the week.
It is our hope that this week continues to raise the profile of reading across
the school, encouraging and inspiring even our most reluctant readers. In
this week we will be providing additional information for parents to use when
reading at home with your children so watch this space!
If you have any of the following items and are willing to donate these to
the school for our outdoor reading den, we would be very grateful.
Things we are looking for include: Old children’s books (any age)
Fabric or material in green or brown colours Beanbags or cushions
If you could bring them to Miss Davis or Miss Donovan by the end of
this term (Friday 13th February) that would be a great help.

Steve Voake is a
successful English
children's author from
Midsomer Norton,

have sold all over the

gave up his teaching job
when he accepted a deal
for the file rights of his first

PTA News:
Summer Fair Programme Drawing Competition
The PTA is holding a drawing competition to find an image for
the front of our Summer Fair programme; you will find an entry
form in the children's book bags next week. If you wish to get
started now a copy is attached to the school newsletter email or
you can find a downloadable version on the PTA Facebook page
or by emailing [email protected]. Children can enter
more than one copy – we would love to see all their designs.
The theme is 'Through the Wars' and we are looking for a celebratory design that would be
appropriate for a summer fair – this could include the effort on the home front and local community
spirit. Felt-tip pens can be used and the brighter the picture the better – we are looking for a bold and
eye-catching image. The date and time will be printed on the front of the programme so there is no
need to include this information as part of the design.
Book Collection
Once again we will be having a book sale at this year's Summer Fair. This time, however, we plan to
sell only adult books – both fiction and non-fiction. We will not be collecting books until after the Easter
holidays but, if you have a spring clean over the next few months, please keep any spare books aside
until then. There will be further reminders in the school newsletter closer to the time.
Soft Toys Collection
This collection will start from Tuesday 24 February when a box will be placed outside the main school
office. Please donate only soft toys that are clean and in good condition.
Wake 'n' shake - The school would like to thank the PTA for purchasing an IPod Nano for the Wake
and Shake team to use. We have a very enthusiastic and competent group of 18 Y6 girls who lead the
Wake and Shake every week! Every Mon, Wed and Friday a team of 6 of them are on the top
playground from 8.45am until 8.55am. If you haven't already discovered this energetic way to start
your day (children, parents, grandparents and carers all welcome!) please turn up to one of these
sessions next week!
Clothes Bank - Unfortunately, the business who supplied the school clothes bank has closed. We will
work with the PTA to try and source another provider. If anyone knows of another company that could
supply the school with a clothes bank, and pay the school for the amount of clothes donated, please
contact the PTA - [email protected] (This is not connected with the PTA recycle school
uniform and dressing up clothes initative.)
F/KS1 News
Bristol Zoo - Last Thursday the Bumblebees and Butterflies headed to Bristol Zoo for the day. We
had a really fun day and saw lots of different animals.
Part of the day was all about learning about penguins and other animals and how they manage living
in a very cold climate. The children were very well behaved and very tired by the end of our zoo
adventure. Thank you very much to all the helpers who supported us on the day! Thank you also to
Miss Honeybell for organising this exciting day out.

Sports News:
It's been such a busy sporting week at School…
On Tuesday a group of 12 Y6's started a lunchtime tag rugby club with Mr Lewis ( from Up & Under
Sports.) The children will continue with these coaching for 5 weeks before taking part in an inter
school tag rugby competition in March!
On Tuesday afternoon a group of 7 year 5 boys participated
in a football tournament in Bath against 5 other schools. The
boys played 5 games in total, winning 3 of them and drawing
2! They didn't lose a single match! The team finished 2nd
overall. Well done James, Max, Ryan, Luke, Freddie, Tom
and Will! Thank you also to Mr Jenkins who accompanied
the boys and said they were a credit to Saltford and their
parents.
Max T and Luke C wrote this report:
“On Tuesday 3rd of February 2015 Saltford year five football team went to bath, sports and leisure
centre to play in a football tournament. We set off at lunch time. When we got there we played
'Wembley singles' to warm ourselves up. Our first game was against Newbridge. In the first few
minutes Newbridge scored first then suddenly Max scored a cracker! So it was 1:1 in the first half.
Then Newbridge just slipped another goal from a free kick. In the last minute Max scored again
placing the ball in the bottom corner. The final score was 2:2.
10 minutes later, our second game was on pitch [b]. We played against Chew Stoke. In the first few
minutes Freddie scored a sliding goal! Straight after that they scored a goal! Then magically James
scored an amazing goal which flew in the net! The substitutes came on. Max, with the power in his
shot, scored a goal. Out of nowhere they scored a goal. The final score was 3:2 to us!
Our next game was against Wasps. Luke kept a clean sheet because he is amazing in goal! Ryan
scored, Will scored then James scored! The next game was against Poulton. The score was 3:3 Ryan
scored, Max scored and Will scored!
At the end of the Tournament we came second, with 11 points, to Paulton who won with 13 points. It
was a close and exciting football festival.
We would like to thank Mr Jenkins for taking us to the tournament and encouraging us in every game.
Well done Saltford year 5 boys!”
On Tuesday evening, the teachers received some more staff PE training from
Sarah Moon from Create Development. The school has used some of it's Sports Premium Funding to
purchase a new scheme of Work 'real PE'. Sarah is guiding the staff with this which will give the
teachers confidence to deliver Outstanding PE lessons throughout the school. Please see the PE
action plan on our website for more information.
Next week the Y3's will be travelling to Bath to participate in another football tournament. We wish
them lots of luck!
