Mary Gold got in his airspace and hit his arm with her head…
Luckily, Noodle’s mom is there to teach him about the importance of accepting responsibility.

so common, why do we struggle with
teaching children how to respond appropriately when it happens?
Join Gus as he and his classmates
learn the brief biology lesson behind
why we all pass gas, and the right
way to handle it when it happens in

13 & Counting: Does a Hamburger Really Have to Be Round?
GRADES 5–12
Tamara Zentic, MS
Experts have told us for years that the effects of low self-esteem can be debilitating for youth.
This second book in the 13 & Counting series provides educators with 22 strategies and lessons that
incorporate Boys Town Social Skills to help students deal with the difficult topic of low self-esteem. These
lessons invite and encourage the use of Executive Function processes as part of the students’ learning
experience.
Use the easy-to-implement strategies to help improve self-esteem and foster healthy identity perspectives. The lessons give youth the opportunity to explore their values, beliefs, and ways of thinking.
Furthermore, the lessons incorporate the use of technology, through various devices, to better
engage and motivate students in the digital age. Flipped classroom suggestions are provided.

13 & Counting: Be the Difference!
Be The Difference!
6.
Ask students if they like being different. (They will say yes at this point.) Then ask them why
they make fun of others and bully people because they are different.
7.
Explain to students that if they like being different, they should tolerate differences in others.
Show the steps of the skill of “Tolerating Differences in Others”:
4
8.
Play the Beatles’ song, “Let It Be,” for the class. After listening to the song, tell the students,
“Learn to be okay with you enough that you can let someone else have the freedom to be
different from you!”
9.
Introduce the “Let It Be” board (the butcher paper you have laminated). Explain to students
that the board will be run like a Twitter. As part of their grade, each student will be required
to “tweet” something once a week by writing a comment on how they can be appreciative of
differences in other people. Have students use Twitter language and symbols, and have them
use their Twitter ID name so you can track their messages each week without other students
knowing who wrote a comment. (Or use whatever method will make it easier for you to
monitor the board comments.) The board will serve as a constant visual reminder of how
students think they can be appreciative of differences in other people.
10.
Be sure to let students know that they will receive the actual grades they earned on their
quizzes you returned earlier.
When the students put all their things in one pile at the beginning
of the activity, make sure they are separated enough so that
their owners can easily find them later.

and understand the value of

begin to respond to bullying and

students can find their voice and
change can start to occur.
Concepts Explored in Section 4:
 Responding to Bullying
 Strategies for Appropriately
Taking a Stand
 Taking Action
Most students care about the feelings of
others and are anxious to help when a problem
arises. Giving them strategies to take action
brings satisfaction, accomplishment, and
control in their periodically out-of-control
and ever-changing world. They can begin to
see and believe that their actions CAN make a
difference that matters. They see hope.

13 & Counting: Be the Difference!
Engaging Bullying-Prevention Activities That Promote Social Skills and Executive Function

Why are middle schools such a breeding ground for bullying? Emotional immaturity. Ruthless social climbing. Social
awkwardness. The reasons are complex, and the solutions aren’t simple.
This book includes two-dozen lesson plans that are teacher-tested and skill-focused! The lessons do more than help
students learn how to handle bullying, teasing, and other difficult social interactions, they also strengthen executive
functioning. Students learn how to build better friendships, become more socially mature, and discover who they really
are while exploring concepts such as tolerance, inclusion, and self-confidence.
Tips to help you get the most out of each lesson and ideas on how to flip your classroom make 13 & Counting your

This book features the step-by-step component
behaviors to 182 skills, from the basic (following instructions and introducing yourself) to the

Opening chapters explain the individual and
group teaching techniques that enable youth to
recognize when, where, or with whom to use a
particular skill. The authors also show how to plan
skill-based treatment interventions for youth with
difficult problems, such as substance abuse, aggression, running away, depression, or attention
deficits. A CD helps readers search for social skills
by title, category, or problem behavior and allows
you to print copies of social skill steps for display.
Teaching Social Skills to Youth is an ideal resource
for the classroom, in counseling or therapy, and in
job training programs. CD included. 314 pgs.

This program uses a “learning through acting” model that prepares teens transitioning from school to the
larger community to use social skills and responsible decision-making when addressing work-related dilemmas. Seven acts focus on the character virtues of responsibility, respect, fairness, citizenship, trustworthiness,
caring, and civic responsibility. Students are asked to pretend they are the characters in the scene, to think
and react as they believe the characters might, and then to role play the scene. A Student Book (149 pgs.) sets
up the scenes, gives student directions, and includes comprehension and reflection questions. The Teacher’s

Even Willie, despite a strong family

Cindi Dodd, MEd
By Lawrence E. Shapiro, PhD
This activity book, written by an educator who spent nearly three
decades in the trenches, provides fun, engaging, and quick skits and
activities that educators can use to harness their students’ love of
drama while teaching them valuable social skills.
The skits are easy to follow and based on real-life situations! Each
of the 21 social skills taught is followed by a few activities that can be
used to further teach or reinforce the skill, or to simply change the
approach. The way this book is organized makes it ideal for use as
either a targeted, Tier 2 intervention for groups of three or more, or
as a universal intervention with larger groups.
The appendix also provides examples of additional skits teachers
might find useful in teaching about issues like public displays of affection, dress code, and more! CD with reproducibles included.

Growing through Positive Choices
Stephie McCumbee
When friends Maci and Trey are pulled out of class
because they mocked “little-miss-perfect” Shaina,
their teacher offers them this advice: “Grass withers
and flowers fade every time a bad choice is made.”
Those words went right over Trey’s head. He didn’t
get it, but Maci understood… sort of. It was time for
her to make better choices! But how can she do that
when Trey is coaxing her to chat during quiet time?
In this imaginative tale, Maci discovers how to
“grow a beautiful garden” in her mind by taking
responsibility for her actions and making better
choices. She also sees how Trey’s poor decisions

others) are hurting him. 40 pgs.

ANGER AND AGGRESSION IN TEENS
Working with Aggressive Youth
GRADES 5-12
Daniel L. Daly, PhD, with Michael N. Sterba, MHD
Angry, aggressive, or violent youth threaten the well-being of themselves, other children, and caregivers in any setting – schools, foster care, group homes, or mental health facilities. They may need medication and therapy to treat
their problems, but they also must learn how to control negative thoughts and emotions without turning to aggressive
behavior.
The authors offer effective short- and long-term ideas and strategies for defusing aggression in youth based on the
approach and proven teaching methods developed in the Boys Town Model®. Sample Treatment Plans from a variety
of settings help caregivers see how intervention strategies can be developed for aggressive youth and used in different
environments.
Included is a social skills chart that can be used as an easy reference guide by caregivers as they teach new
pro-social skills to replace old behaviors. 225 pgs.
