The 13th Hong Kong -‐ Asia Film Financing Forum Features Generational Melting Pot Hong Kong, 3 February 2015 - One of the top film financing platforms in Asia, the
Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum, announced the list of 30 outstanding film
projects – including three finalists for the HAF/Fox Chinese Film Development Award
– for its 13th edition this week. Selected from over 300 submissions from multiple
countries and regions across Asia, this year’s projects feature a mix of strong upand-coming young talents and renowned filmmaking veterans.
Hong Kong filmmakers shine at the 13th HAF
This year’s HAF project list includes five projects from Hong Kong filmmakers of
different generations. After his award-nominated Doomsday Party (HAF 2013), HO
Hong returns to the HAF this year with the suspense drama Lost in Border. Coming
to the HAF for the first time, Gilitte LEUNG follows her hit indie drama Love Me Not
with inspirational sports drama Breathing.
This year also sees established industry figures nurturing projects from new talents.
Hong Kong Film Award nominated scriptwriter LUK Yee-sum makes her feature film
directorial debut with youth drama Lazy Hazy Crazy, produced by Subi LIANG,
producer of acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker PANG Ho-Cheung. Academy Awardwinning documentary filmmaker Ruby YANG will co-produce Stephen Gurie WOO’s
documentary The Last Stitch.
Award-winning Hong Kong New Wave director YIM Ho tells a tense and touching
story of war and sacrifice from China’s recent history with Nanking Xmas.1937, a
big-budget epic that marks one of biggest projects presented in HAF. Yim has
partnered with veteran producer NG Sze-yuen to bring this important story to the
screen.
Diverse projects from across Asia
The 13th HAF welcomes back familiar names like PENG Tao from China and Jun
Robles LANA from The Philippines. PENG’s project Hell is Other People, is a
provocative romance drama with a catchy title Die Beautiful brings LANA back to
HAF for a third consecutive year with a powerful drama about family and traditional
values. His previous HAF projects Bwakaw (HAF 2012) and Barber’s Tales (HAF
2013) were both successfully completed and exhibited around the world.
1 In collaboration with the Nara International Film Festival, Japanese auteur KAWASE
Naomi serves as a producer on the NARAtive Film 2015-2016 (Title: work-inprogress) film project, to be directed by Cuba’s Carlos Machado QUINTELA.
Terence CHANG, longtime producer of director John Woo, is co-producing comingof-age drama That Summer by young Mainland China director ZHOU Quan.
Philippe BOBER, one of the Europe’s most respected producers and distributors,
teams up with award-winning director LOU Ye, to produce Riddle by ZHOU Hao,
whose debut The Night caught the film world’s attention at the Berlinale 2014.
Returning to filmmaking for the first time in ten years, maverick Japanese director
HARA Kazuo reflects on his long career in The Memory of Okinawa (working title).
After 2009’s The Blue Mansion leading Singaporean film and theater director Glen
GOEI returns with horror romance Pontianak. Also from Singapore is documentary
filmmaker TAN Pin Pin (To Singapore, With Love) with her new project Time
Capsule.
Curator of the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the director of the HAF,
Jacob WONG, member of the 2015 HAF Project Reading Committee said, “We are
thrilled with the quality of this year HAF submissions. The selection is very exciting
and a great balance of newcomers and more established filmmakers from all over
the region. We truly believe Asian cinema is flourishing. “
Three outstanding projects vie for the HAF/Fox Chinese Film Development Award
Established in 2012 by the Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum and Fox
International Productions (Greater China), the HAF/Fox Chinese Film Development
Award aims to develop feature films with regional appeal by providing support and
nurture for promising scripts. Now in its fourth year, the HAF/Fox Chinese Film
Development Award has chosen three outstanding projects for its final round.
This year’s three finalists are: Biological drama film My Last Wish by Leon SUN,
suspense drama Unexpected and Ambiguous by ZHOU Hongbo and comedy My
Beauty Queen Mom by YU Sen-I. The winner of the Award will receive a cash prize
of HK$100,000 and a Development Contract with Fox. Other finalists may also be
offered a first look agreement.
"The projects reflect diversified efforts from film makers all over the mandarinspeaking world in taking the film industry to a more mature development," praised
2 MA Tien-Tsung, one of the readers for the HAF/Fox Chinese Film Development
Award.
This year, the HAF has teamed up with several new partners for additional prizes.
Major Chinese internet video platform iQIYI, who is also the Premium Sponsor of
HAF this year, will present HK$100,000 for the iQIYI Special Award, presented to a
project from the Greater China region. SCM (formerly STAR Chinese Movies), FOX
International Channels’ flagship Chinese-language channel and the leading Chinese
movies channel in Asia, will present a cash prize of US$10,000 to the winner of the
HAF Script Development Fund.
In addition, G2D Co. Ltd. will present the G2D Post-production Award to two HAF
projects, giving them each US$10,000 worth of post-production services at the
company’s offices in Thailand. White Light Studio will present the White Light PostProduction Award, which rewards one HAF project with US$15,000 towards postproduction services at White Light Studio. Editing and VFX production company
MONEFF from South Korea will present the MONEFF Award, which offers an in-kind
prize of US$10,000 to the winning project. Finally, the Paris Coproduction Village of
Champs-Elysées Film Festival will offer ticket and accommodation package to one
project among the HAF projects to participate in the 2015 edition of Paris
Coproduction Village.
As a leading financing platform for filmmakers, HAF has nurtured many projects that
have been successfully completed and earned widespread recognition around the
world. Naomi KAWASE’s Still the Water (HAF 2013) was selected in competition at
the Cannes Film Festival in 2014. Jun Robles LANA’s Barber’s Tales (HAF 2013
project) received international acclaim in various film festivals. KUNDO: Age of the
Rampant (HAF 2013) broke box office records in South Korea during its opening
weekend. Last but not least, X+Y (HAF 2013) was selected in Toronto International
Film Festival 2014 and BFI London Film Festival 2014. The film will be commercially
released in the UK later this year.
