Modi vs Kejriwal vs Sonia on
last Sunday before Delhi polls
New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress chief Sonia
Gandhi and AAP leader Arvind
Kejriwal Sunday made determined
bids to woo the people of Delhi for
Feb 7 assembly polls, launching
sharp attacks on their rivals while
seeking to convey their commitment to politics of development.
Raising the pitch on last Sunday
before voting, Modi, Kejriwal and
Gandhi addressed rallies in different parts of the national capital
and drew enthusiastic response
from their supporters. Though the
battle is largely seen to be between
the Bharatiya Janata Party and
the Aam Aadmi Party, Congress
sees itself as a "dark horse". In the
2013 election to the 70-member
assembly, AAP won 28 seats and
finished a close second to the BJP
which won 31 seats. Congress
only got eight. In his rally in West
Delhi's Dwarka area, Modi focused his attack mainly on AAP,
and said the national capital needs
an administration which works in
harmony with his central government. Gandhi, addressing a rally
near Badarpur in south Delhi,
slammed Modi as a "pracharak"
and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal
as "dharnebaaj", while Kejriwal, in
his rally at Shastri Nagar in north
Delhi, taunted Modi over promises of bring back black money and
accused BJP of failing to fulfill
its promises on women's security. Modi hit out at both the AAP
and Congress for making "false
promises" and in an attack on the
former, said Delhi does not need
a government "which launches agitations day and night". He urged
people not to give a fractured
mandate and ensure full majority
for his party, saying even a small
activity in the national capital
has an impact. Thanking Delhi's
people for their support in the
Lok Sabha elections, he said: "I
have to return it by doing development. I have to solve problems
in every part (of Delhi). Give me
a chance to serve you." Modi said
Delhi needs a responsible, sensitive government and running
an administration was a serious
task. "You cannot do it by running
away," he said, taking a dig at Kejriwal who quit as chief minister
after 49 days. Referring to petrol
and diesel prices coming down
due to international factors since
he assumed office, Modi said his
rivals credit it to good luck but if
"common man can save money
due to (my) good luck, why bring
someone who does not have good
luck". Gandhi, who addressed her
first election rally, said her party
would bring back the "atmosphere
of development" in Delhi, if voted to power and accused BJP and
AAP of making false promises.

US envoy to India stresses
on improving trade ties
Kolkata : Describing US President Barack Obama's
visit as "transformative", that brought US-India relations to a new level, the American envoy to India Sunday said improving the economic ties was a key area.
Speaking on the occasion of a book launch here, US
Ambassador Richard Rahul Verma said the US was
endeavouring to become India's "best partner". "This
was a visit which pushed the relationship to a different level. The best line of the visit is that the president
said India and US are natural partners, we know that.
But, he said, we want to be India's best partner," said
Verma. "We articulated different vision for our relationship and talked about cooperation in East Asia,
on maritime issue, humanitarian issue, combating
terrorism. We issued something called the Delhi declaration of friendship - something we haven't done
with any other country," he said. About economic ties, Verma lamented the low volume of two-way
trade. "Economic and trade ties were major issues
during the talks and it has been agreed to increase the
two-way trade by at least five time the current volume.
"While the current trade volume is satisfactory, the
percentage of export that go from US to India is two
percent and vice versa its one percent, so we are barely
reaching our potential," he said. Launching Swadesh
Chatterjee's "Building Bridges: The Role of Indian
Americans in Indo-US Relations", Verma said US and
India have agreed to collaborate on jointly designing
and producing defence equipment besides signing a
10 year deal for joint military exercises. "We had quite
breakthrough in defence, signing a 10-year deal to
bring our militaries together, we will do more training, more exercises. We agreed to start building and
designing things together. We have picked four proj-
ects that we going to work on jointly and also formed
two working groups for military assistance," he said.
About the civil nuclear pact for which Chatterjee
played a key role in pushing the deal, Verma credited the heads of the two countries for finally clinching
the deal that had been in the limbo for a decade. "We
had a breakthrough understanding in the civil nuclear
deal which had got stuck in the liability issue since
the day it was passed. But it took the leaders of the
two countries to get the breakthrough. This is surely a great pathway forward not just for US or other
companies but for India's ability to generate non carbon-based electricity," added Verma.
"The president during his departure told me that now,
it was the time for the hard work to begin, and we are
ready to begin that hard work," he said.
who only does 'prachar (promotion)', the other has a dharnebaaj
(agitator)," she said, adding that
the country does not run only
on slogans. Accusing the central
government of being anti-farmer
and diluting the land acquisition
law, Gandhi also raised incidents
of communal violence in Trilokpuri and vandalisation of a church
in Dilshad Garden, calling for
defeating forces which spread
"politics of hatred". She also questioned Modi government's sincerity in fighting corruption while
slamming the AAP for running
away from its responsibilities by
quitting government. Kejriwal, in
his rally, hit back at Congress and
BJP leaders and said he sits in protest not for himself but for causes
concerning people. He hit out
the BJP for failing to honour its
commitment to bring back black
money and now giving insurance
of Rs.1 lakh under the Pradhan
Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. "Before
elections they said we will bring
Rs.15 lakh (into each account) in
100 days. After elections, they are
saying first you die, then you will
get Rs.1 lakh," he said. Kejriwal
also attacked the BJP over remarks
of some of its leaders concerning
women. "How will they protect
women? If it is in their hands, they
will bundle women in a room and
lock it from outside," he said.

Disturbed by Modi
supporters, Bedi
stops speech midway
New Delhi : BJP leaders at Prime
Minister Narendra Modi's rally
here Sunday were caught by surprise when the party's chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi threatened to stop her speech midway
as she was getting disturbed by
the crowd chanting Modi's name.
The thousands of people gathered
at the DDA ground in Dwarka's
Sector 14 were waiting eagerly for
Modi, and were raising slogans
praising him and the BJP at regular
intervals. Bharatiya Janata Party
candidates from many west Delhi
assembly constituencies addressed
the people one by one. As Bedi
was midway into her speech, news
of the prime minister reaching the
ground sent the crowds into a tizzy
who started chanting his name. At
this point, Bedi took a long pause
and waited for the crowd to settle
down. However, when that did not
happen, she resumed her speech
but stopped again after a few seconds, visibly distracted and disturbed by the loud cheering. She
turned to the party leaders seated
behind her on the dais and said,
"I cannot speak like this", startling
many of them. Immediately, union
minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy rushed
to her side while frantically signalling with his hand, asking her
to carry on. But a reluctant Bedi
repeated that she "cannot speak
like this", forcing Rudy to whisper
something in her ear. Seconds later, Bedi regained her composure
and finished her speech as the party leaders breathed a sigh of relief.
to watch also featured current India
Test skipper Virat Kohli at No.10.
The former right-handed batsman
termed Kohli as "legendary", saying
the choice would surprise many but
that everyone is witnessing a master
who is just going to get better with
time. “The last name on my list,
but not the least by any means, is
young Virat Kohli. There might be
some surprise regarding this pick
because he is very young and has a
lot of cricket to play still,” Richards
said. “But in my eyes, he is already
legendary and there cannot be any
doubt about that. He is simply magnificent in whatever little time he
has played as compared to others.
He is only going to get better and
better and add to his list of achievements.” Also in the list are West Indies' Chris Gayle and Clive Llyod,
Australia’s Ricky Ponting, Matthew
Hayden and Michael Hussey, India’s Virender Sehwag and South
Africa’s AB de Villiers.
Tendulkar leads Richards'
top ODI batsmen list
St. John’s (Antigua) : West Indies
cricket legend Vivian Richards
Sunday said Sachin Tendulkar
would lead his list of top-10 OneDay International (ODI) batsmen
of all time. In a column written for
the International Cricket Council (ICC) website, Richards said it
would be the former Indian batting
great who would undoubtedly be
sitting at the top of his list.
“The first name that comes to mind
is Sachin Tendulkar. In a single
word, I would describe him as a
legend. He has always been one of
my favourite batsmen and I would
pay money to watch him bat. He
wasn’t the biggest in size amongst
other cricketers of the world but
all good things come in small
packages. And he was a fantastic
batsman," said Richards. Richards,
who was part of the 1975 and 1979
West Indies' World Cup winning
squads, also rated Brian Lara in
Tendulkar's league. “I rate Brian
Lara the same as Sachin. I would
pay to watch him bat too and then
pay again and again, and keep paying, however many times it needs to
be done,” he said. The 62-year-old’s

Craigslist hookups behind rise in HIV: Study
New York : Entry of the popular
website Craigslist in a community
is linked to 16 percent increase in
HIV in that area, say researchers,
including an Indian-origin professor Anindya Ghose from New
York University's Stern School of
Business. "Our study results suggest that there is a new social route
of HIV transmission that is taking place in this digital era," said
Jason Chan, assistant professor at
Carlson School of Management.
"Health care practitioners and
policymakers have to look more
closely at online platforms to assess how its usage may facilitate
the spread of HIV and STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) across
the country," Chan added.
The researchers based their claims
after analysing data in 33 states
from 1999 to 2008. After conducting a series of tests to eliminate
other possible causes that might
be driving the HIV trends such as
increased testing in a community,
the researchers discovered that
the upward shift was influenced
by advertisements in Craigslist's
personal sections, not the site's
escort service ads. "I actually think
that the creators of Craigslist had
no intent of harming society. They
came in with good intentions,"
Chan noted. "At the same time,
they did not anticipate that users
could use the features in an unexpected way with unintended consequences," he added. The study
was published in the journal MIS
Quarterly.
