VILLAGE OF PORT ALICE
SIDEWALK & FOOTBRIDGE
WINTER MAINTENANCE POLICY
2014-2015 Winter Season
During the 2014-2015 winter season, please be aware that the Village of Port
Alice does not remove snow and/or ice from the public sidewalks in the village.
When the sidewalks and/or footbridges are covered with snow and/or ice they
are very slippery. Please use extreme caution when walking on them. Under
the policy the Public Works Crew is directed to clear the footbridges only , and
only after the major roads and streets have been cleared.
We regret this inconvenience brought on by forces of nature, and remind you
to use extreme caution when using the sidewalks and footbridges during the
winter, and that you are doing so at your own risk.
This notice is published in accordance with Village of Port Alice
Sidewalk & Footbridge Maintenance Policy Code No. 4.3.b.
Winter Road Conditions
The Village of Port Alice would like to remind residents that winter road
conditions will quickly be upon us.
On the North Island that can mean:
 heavy rain,
 leaves and road debris,
 snow,
 slush,
 black ice,
 and reduced visibility.
Please ensure that your vehicle is winter-ready with good tires.
Take your time, expect the unexpected, and arrive safely!

Oscar Hickes was a local sports fanatic
who died suddenly in his prime, at just 27
years of age. The Oscar Hickes tournament was first held in 1978. Since
its inception, hockey players from all over
Vancouver Island have travelled to pay
homage to a fallen hero, meet and mingle
with old friends, and to play some great
hockey! The event is more than just a
hockey tournament; the community comes
together to give visitors a taste of North
Island hospitality. Come down to the Doug
Bondue Arena and check it out!

It is of critical importance that you believe that
people working together can achieve more than
people working on their own.

It is expected that individuals interested in
pursuing these positions have concern for their
neighbours’ welfare, and are willing to give time
and energy to the work of expressing that
concern with actions.

These positions will be left open until filled or
until there is no longer need within our
community.

Currently a small group meets at 4:00 P.M. on
Sundays at St. John’s Church, 1100 Nigei, the
church on the corner. We gather to worship,
and then spend some time discussing how we
can reach out within our community.

Better at Home
Port Alice Lions Club
Our mission statement is to serve our community by
volunteering our time and providing financial assistance.
To help our community with projects which benefit the
town of Port Alice and its residents. We support the
visions of Lions International which empowers volunteers
to serve their communities and meet humanitarian
needs.
“Empowering People”
Objectives: We are a service club of men and
women dedicated to helping those in our community. In addition, our club currently supports:
Better at Home is funded by the Government of British Columbia
Recognizing a Growing Need . . .
 Port Alice Girl Guides
 Port Alice Minor Hockey
 Volunteer Fire Department
 Port Alice Hospital
 Village of Port Alice
 Helping families in need at Christmas
 Easter egg hunt for the Kids
 Sleigh ride with Santa
 Children with Diabetes
 Collection of used eyeglasses and hearing aids
Seniors are an important and growing part of
our communities, and their active involvement
enriches everyone’s lives. To ensure that
seniors continue to play an active part in our
communities, they often need support to live
independently in their own homes, surrounded
by friends, families and neighbours.
(which are repaired and donated to people with
vision and hearing impairments)
 Donate to Curling and Golf tournaments for the
Visually Impaired.
 Easter Seal House – Timmy’s Telethon
 Guide Dogs of Canada (through Lions International)
 Special Olympics and Camp Shawinigan
 Sea View School
 North Island Crisis Centre
Better at Home helps seniors with simple dayto-day tasks, thereby helping seniors maintain
their independence and stay connected with
their community.
Past Projects completed by the volunteers of
the Port Alice Lions Club:







A range of non-medical home support services
The specific services offered by Better at Home
reflect the different needs of each community.
Examples include:
 Hospital heli-pad
 Angus Dawson ball field and concession
 Lions Park playground and gazebo
 Original boat launch and breakwater
 The addition to the Community Centre
including the board room, library, foyer
and Lion’s Den
 Tennis court
 Wheelchair access to the Victorian strip mall
 Original boat launch at Victoria Lake
The success of this program depends on two
important factors:
 People who are willing to volunteer
 Seniors who wish to access the service
If you are interested in joining or would like

Port Alice History Notes...
The Mill (at this time owned by BC Pulp & Paper) and town co-exist in the original
Port Alice site in 1935. At this time, Port Alice had a 3-room school, movie theatre,
company store, library, community hall, golf course and club, two churches, tennis
courts, and a Bank of Nova Scotia.
The Heritage Office is looking for any memorabilia of Port Alice and its past functions,
including T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, yearbooks, photographs, buttons, pins, event programs,
etc. If you have anything that you would be willing to donate or lend to us, please call Evelyn
at 284-6608, or drop off at the Village Office.
