Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 1, 2015
Messages From Fr. Mike
Congratulations to the children of our parish who
received their First Penance this weekend! May they
continue to turn to Jesus regularly for this wonderful
experience of his forgiving love. These children will now
begin their preparations for their First Holy Communion.
This week I will be meeting
individually with our Confirmation
candidates to review with them their
preparations for this sacrament and their
readiness to accept the commitment of
living as mature active followers of Jesus.
Overall, almost all of our candidates have
been preparing seriously, and many have
performed helpful acts of service for St.
Mary’s parish.
This Tuesday, February 3rd, is the
feast of St. Blaise, the patron saint of throat
ailments. In his honor we will be offering the traditional
Blessing of Throats that day at our 7:30 AM and 6:30 PM
Masses. During this cold winter season may God spare us
from sore throats and other illnesses.
On Wednesday I will be attending a preparatory
meeting at St. Ann’s Church in Lawrenceville introducing
the 2015 Catholic Appeal. Even though we have failed
to reach our goal the past two years, I join with Bishop
O’Connell in expressing my gratitude for all who have
supported this Appeal, which helps fund many important
ministries and programs here in the Diocese of Trenton.
The bishop’s video message is scheduled to be shown at
our Masses the weekend of February 14–15.
Next Sunday is World Marriage Day, and at all our
weekend Masses we will offer a special blessing prayer
for any married couples present in church. Marriage is a
challenging vocation, and I certainly admire all of you
who are living witnesses that even in our modern world it
is possible for a man and a woman to make a lifelong
commitment to honor and love each other in good times
and in bad, in sickness and in health. Thank you to all
who have submitted copies of your wedding pictures—we
will have them on display next weekend.
The Season of Lent begins in less than three weeks.
Have you thought about what you can do for our Lord this
year?

Marriage Moments:
As the story goes, Jonah was trying to run away from God
because he feared announcing a message of repentance.
A whale changed his mind. (Jonah 1-4) Are there any
disputes I'm running away from in our marriage? Identify
one troublesome difference today and face it squarely.
Repent if necessary. Honest communication can be an act
of courage and salvation.
(for Feb. 2nd, Groundhog Day) In the spirit of the
groundhog, develop your shadow side today. If you're shy,
make an overture to someone in need. If you're not very
affectionate, give your spouse an unexpected kiss or hug.
If you're a work-a-holic, take some time off to play together.
You get the idea.
You have a couple of weeks to think about how to celebrate
Valentine's Day. (Luckily, it's before Lent so chocolate is a
possibility.) Better yet, choose one favor a day to surprise
your beloved with. Your love is a daily act, not just one day
a year.
Lent begins on Wednesday, February 18th. Sure, we can
celebrate Mardi Gras on the 17th, but start thinking now of
a meaningful Lenten practice. Why not choose at least one
penance that you will both do. It can reinforce your
decision and bond you in a common effort.
Blessing of Throats
The traditional Blessing of Throats will be offered
here at St. Mary’s this Tuesday, February 3rd during our
7:30 AM and 6:30 PM Masses.
World Meeting of Families
The World Meeting of Families is the world’s largest
Catholic gathering of families. It is held every three years
and sponsored by the Holy See’s Pontifical Council for the
Family. A theme is chosen that energizes and enlivens the
event while adding great depth of meaning to our
understanding of families. The theme of the World Meeting
of Families—Philadelphia 2015 is “Love is Our Mission: The
Family Fully Alive”, emphasizing the impact of the love and
life of families on our society. Since its inception by St. John
Paul II in 1994, the World Meeting of Families has
strengthened the sacred bonds of families across the globe.
Pope Francis is coming! Our Holy Father will be
present to conclude the World Meeting of Families, likely
arriving at its close on September 25th, and then celebrating a
public Mass on the Ben Franklin Parkway on Sept. 27th.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 1, 2015
Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the Lord who made us.
— Psalm 95:6
Readings for February 8, 2015:
Job 2:1–4, 6–7
Wow, do we ever feel like Job, a wise and righteous man
with many blessings from God and then suddenly we are put
to the test by Satan? Job had everything and then lost
everything. However, he remained faithful to God. This
reading is Job's response to a friend who is trying to console
him.
Psalm 147:1-6
Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted.
1 Corinthians 9:16–19, 22–23
Paul understands his mission of preaching the Gospel more as
a "stewardship" authorized by Jesus rather than an
"occupation" deserving a just wage. Let's ponder these
words: Paul is on a mission from God and he can fulfill his
mission willingly which is its own reward or unwillingly
which is fulfilling his responsibility. All of us have a unique
mission, in God's plan, that no one else can do; let's choose to
do our mission willingly and be full of the joy of the Gospel.
Gospel: Mark 1:29–39
In our January traveling CD, Fr Robert Barron captures much
of the Gospel: Take the time to pray, forgive, reach out to
someone who is hurting.
In Mark's Gospel, Jesus
immediately went to Peter's mother-in-law, grasped her hand,
and helped her up; the fever left her and she immediately
served them. In the evening, Jesus continued to heal many
that were brought to him and he cast out demons. And in the
morning, Jesus "took" the time to pray and then went to
preach. We need to make and take time for God every day
and we need to do at least one (or more) outreach to our
Danny Thomas & St. Jude
One hundred years ago, comedian Danny Thomas was
born Amos Jacob to Lebanese parents in Deerfield,
Michigan, southwest of Detroit.
At age 26, married, facing the birth of his first child,
and struggling to support his family as he tried to make it in
show business, Thomas considered giving up his dream of
being a performer in exchange for a regular paycheck at an
uncle’s grocery store.
A devout Catholic, he walked into SS. Peter and Paul
Church in Detroit and knelt before a statue of St. Jude, the
patron saint of hopeless causes. “Help me find my place in
life” he prayed, and placed his last $7 in the poor box. The
next morning he received a lucrative job offer in Chicago,
and his entertainment career began to take off.
A few years later, at another turning point in his life,
Thomas again asked St. Jude’s help and promised “I’ll
build you a shrine”. St. Jude came through for him again.
In the 1950s, by now a successful television star, Danny
Thomas kept his promise. He founded the St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee,
which opened in 1962. Danny Thomas died on Feb. 6,
1991, and is buried on the grounds of St. Jude Hospital.

AUTHORITY FROM GOD

According to Moses, the people decided they didn’t
want to hear God’s voice directly any more. It was much
too frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers,
prophets, instead? God agreed, but with a warning. The
people had better listen to those teachers, because they
spoke in God’s name.
That arrangement, though, had its own problems, for
them and for us. How do I know this teacher is truly from
God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts of the
teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scripture
to help us with those questions, but still there are always a
few loose ends.
That is the powerful significance of the sentence in
today’s Gospel: “The people were astonished at his
teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not
as the scribes.” The people knew that this Jesus was
