New Year, New Service, Greater Mobility
The City of Conroe is pleased to announce a new service for the New Year to provide greater mobility
to its residents.
The Glaval Titan II Low Floor buses seats 21 passengers with 3 wheel chair positions. They have a
very nice clean looking wrap designed to symbolize the green pine tree landscape of Conroe.
Two Conroe Connection buses will travel along Frazier St from North Loop 336 at Walmart and
Lowe’s to South Loop 336 at Lone Star Family Health Center and the Conroe Regional Medical Center.
The service will be provided by buses that are special low floor kneeling buses with no steps making boarding the bus much easier.
The City is constructing new sidewalks along Frazier St to help people safely access the bus as well as attractive bus shelters and bus
stop signs and to mark the route and where passengers get on and off the bus.
Bus route maps and schedules can also be picked up at Conroe City Hall, Oscar Johnson Jr.
Community Center and Greater Conroe/ Lake Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce offices.
The bus service will run Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Regular bus fare
will be $1.00 for a one-way trip. With the appropriate Conroe Connection Transit ID Cards,
seniors, persons with disabilities and students will pay half fare of 50 cents for a one-way
trip.
The costs of the vehicles and operations as well as the construction costs associated with
the new fixed route bus service are supported by the Federal Transit Administration, Texas
Department of Transportation and the City of Conroe.

Business Insight With
BlueJack National's
Casey Paulson
written by Samantha Good
Bluejack National is one of the most highly
anticipated projects coming to Montgomery
County. There has been a lot of interest in
the newest luxury-lifestyle community and
championship golf course. Casey Paulson,
president of Bluejack and partner at Beacon
Land Development, took time to speak with the
Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce
about the project.
Paulson has been in the golf world since the
mid 90’s. His love of golf started in high school
and grew as he played through college. His
career progressed from golf pro through general
manager to developer with the creation of Beacon
Land Development. Paulson explains his path as
a natural progression.
His desire to “create something special, to find
the right piece of land and help transform it into
more than just a golf course,” Paulson said. “I
hope to be a part of this community for a long
time. I want to build a legacy, a family heirloom
that is passed down through generations.”
Paulson and his partners at Bluejack National and
Beacon Land Development took their passion for
golf and turned it into an exciting new project
in Montgomery County. They have put together
an outstanding team of local talent to help
them bring their vision to life. This top notch
team paired with the remarkable piece of land,
attracted professional golfer, Tiger Woods, to
their project. Blue Jack National is the first Tiger
Woods designed course in the United States.
Paulson loves to talk about the magical quality
this land has and doesn’t hesitate to emphasize
the qualities that set Bluejack apart.
“I recall visiting the area over a year ago and
witnessing the transformation that has already
occurred,” Paulson said. “The unique rolling hills
and tall mature pines that surround the course,
that was previously Blaketree National, create
a sense of old romance that is reminiscent of
premier destination private clubs like Augusta
National Golf Club and Sage Valley Golf Club.”
The land has always been the key for them.
The abundance of mature trees paired with the
elevation change from the front gate to the club
house make guests feel as they have traveled
farther than an hour away from downtown
Houston. The atmosphere coupled with the unparalled amenities will make Bluejack one of the
top private clubs in Texas.
Paulson and his business partners are happy they
found this opportunity in Texas.
“I feel the area is not only a great place to do
business, but I feel that growth is happening
with tremendous velocity and shows no signs of
slowing down because of the strong economic
environment in Houston and Montgomery
County,” Paulson said.
Paulson and his family recently moved to the
Montgomery, Texas area from Dallas. They are
looking forward to becoming a partner in the
community.
Paulson has many enjoyable stories from the
time he has been in the golf community. He
has attended many major championships,
played with great players and won many awards
throughout the years. He described a devastating
storm that wrecked the Rancho San Marcos Golf
Course in Santa Barbara, while it was under his
management.
“I recall the accomplishment of our collective
team work to put the course back together,”
Paulson said. “I am looking forward to the
teamwork and building of a great community at
Bluejack.”

EfTA Celebrates 25 Years
“Who’s going to fill our shoes?” That simple
question kicked off 25 years of outreach
and engagement by volunteers to prepare
students for the future. For a quarter century,
Education for Tomorrow Alliance has been a
nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting
the business and education communities in
Montgomery County. With innovative programs
focused on science, technology and career
preparation, EFTA has become the portal
through which business leaders can access
and strengthen local education.
Starting in 1986, a group of area scientists
and researchers working in the Research
Forest area of Montgomery County started
meeting regularly to form the Research Forest
Technology Association. The group, led by the
Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC),
was interested in sharing ideas, especially in line
with George Mitchell’s vision of creating a hub
for taking ideas from inception to tangible end
products. Of particular interest for members of
the RFTA was science education, as many have
moved to Texas from universities or places with
a thriving technology sector. They wanted to
cultivate interest in engineering, medicine and
the like among students who would soon make
up the workforce. In 1989, The Research
Forest Technology Association approached the
now Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce
and its President Kevin Brady to explore ways
for the business community to engage with the
school district. With the support of key business
and school partners, Education for Tomorrow
Alliance was created in 1989 to encourage the
next generation of workers in STEM fields.
Having enough skilled workers to fill hightech jobs in today’s global economy remains
a nationwide challenge. STEM workers are
more than twice as likely to be employed and
with higher pay. In turn, those early volunteers
identified enhancement of the local science fair
as a primary project where they could have
impact. In 1990, the group received a fouryear descending grant from the Department
of Education to hire an Executive Director
and begin student programming. Education
for Tomorrow Alliance staff and volunteers
organized the first SCI://TECH science fair in
partnership with schools at Lone Star College
– Montgomery (Montgomery College).
EfTA programs have evolved through the years
to include a variety of ways to excite students
about the future and engage them in handson learning. In 1991, EfTA partnered with
Entergy to present the CHOICES program,
since replaced by Future Focus, in local school
districts. Future Focus is a classroom-based
curriculum designed to promote positive
decision making among junior high school
students. Trained volunteer presenters offer
interactive programming to help students realize
that educational attainment today has lasting
impacts on their options later in life. Around
the same time, the Student Internship Program
(SIP) began at the insistence of volunteers.
Internships are designed to provide valuable
work experiences for students as they explore
career possibilities. The program offers a first
step toward furthering their education and
figuring out what direction students want to
take in life.
Education for Tomorrow Alliance eventually
became a separate 501(c)(3) with the focus of
cultivating that business-education partnership.
Other programs have come and gone, but
the vision of EfTA remains helping students
become equipped with the knowledge and
skills to be career and college ready. And the
heart of EfTA remains its dedicated volunteers
preparing today’s youth for tomorrow’s
workplace. “EfTA’s ability to reach upwards
of 200,000 students over the past 25 years,
comes from the thousands of volunteers who
share their time and expertise to give students
a unique learning opportunity. You know the
programs are working when you see students
come back as employers and volunteers,”
comments EfTA Board Chair Brian Pellon.
With the support of volunteers, Education for
Tomorrow Alliance hopes to keep filling shoes
for the next 25 years and beyond.
Get Involved
The key to EfTA success remains the
dedicated volunteers who support the
programs. Education for Tomorrow Alliance
is signing up volunteers for the 25th Annual
SCI://TECH Exposition, Igniting Inspiration for
a Generation. The greatest volunteer need is
for science fair judges on Friday, January 30,
2015, to serve either the morning senior high
science fair (7:30 am check-in), the afternoon
junior high event (12:45 pm check-in), or
both. No experience is needed to become a judge, and training is
provided on-site. Judging will take place at The Lone Star Expo &
Convention Center, Science Fair judges can register at: www.efta-us.
org/volunteer. For those unavailable on January 30, additional SCI://
TECH volunteer opportunities can be found online as well.
EfTA’s MISSION is to:
•
CONNECT business with local educators
•
MENTOR today’s students for tomorrow’s workplace
•
ENGAGE community volunteers to inspire youth for success
EFTA 25th Anniversary Event - Kirsty Crofton
I remember first hearing about the “Education for Tomorrow Alliance”
program sitting in my AP Chemistry class at The Woodlands High
School in 2008. Since I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my
career I thought EFTA sounded like a good opportunity to try and
figure out my future, plus it sounded a lot better than my summer
lifeguarding job! I applied to EFTA and received my first internship
position at Huntsman Corporation working in their testing lab for
their Performance Products Division where I was able to integrate
my passion of math and science and apply it to a variety of chemical
and physical testing methods. During the internship, I was not only
building my resume but I was developing my basic engineering skills
while also receiving mentorship for my personal career growth.
That summer working at Huntsman allowed me to realize that being
an engineer was the
career that I ultimately
wanted to pursue. After
graduating from The
Woodlands High School
in 2009, I attended
Purdue University
in Indiana studying
Biomedical Engineering.
I started applying those
engineering skills that
I learned from my
summer internship into
my undergrad courses. Not only did the EFTA program help me with
my schoolwork, it also set me apart from all the other engineering
students by being one of the very few freshman students who
already had an industry-based internship. By building my professional
experiences through the EFTA program, I was able to land an
engineering internship for every summer during college with major
chemical and biomedical companies including Huntsman (Analytical
Lab Intern, TX), Abbott (Quality Engineering Intern, VA) and Zimmer
(Quality Engineering Intern, IN). Those industry-based experiences
helped me get to where I am today. After graduating from Purdue
University with a Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering, I
moved to California to work for Edwards Lifesciences as a Quality
Engineer for their Tranascatheter Heart Valve division. Just like that
summer in 2008, I am still able to integrate my passion for math and
science into my developing career!
I am forever grateful for the opportunity that Huntsman gave
me through the EFTA program and look forward to seeing more
talent coming from this program! Congratulations on your 25 year
anniversary and thanks for everything you do.
