The Benefits of Digital Access to Your Health Information
(NC) Alexa Thompson of Halifax,
Nova Scotia, credits access to digital
health tools for allowing her to take
control of her health and becoming
an active partner in her care. After
experiencing a severe post-operative
infection, Alexa spent six months
in the hospital and two months in
homecare, and as a result she couldn’t
work outside of the home.
After this experience, Alexa’s doctor
encouraged her to participate in a
pilot project, which allows her to keep
and access her health records online
using a patient portal.
“By having access to my health
information electronically, I feel much
more empowered to talk to my surgeon
and it allows me to ask my entire health
care team the right questions. I feel
more in charge of what is happening
to me than I ever have before,” says
Alexa.
Digital health can empower all
patients to take control of their health
care. For example, a survey found
that 98 per cent of Canadian patients
who had access to their personal
health record electronically said they
have confidence in the information
presented in their test results. Nearly
seven in 10 (69 per cent) of adults said
digital health solutions would allow
them to take more control over how
their health is managed.
For Alexa, a major advantage is being
able to add her own information into
her record, in addition to accessing
information about her. Alexa was
able to record her family history
using the patient portal. Her family
has a history of heart disease, so for
her, it’s imperative that any health
care provider that treats her has this
information.
“Now I am an active participant in
my own care, not just a recipient, and I
think it’s one of the best things that has
ever happened to me,” explains Alexa.

health can impact your life, visit

Are you sure you’re ready to move in together?
(NC) Love is in the air. You and your
significant other spend winter evenings
bundled up on the couch, your friends
all get along and every day is a new
adventure. You’re together so often
that you might as well take the next
step and move in with one another…
but wait just one minute. Have you
considered all the implications of
cohabitation? Living together can take
a relationship to the next level, though
there are important things to take into
consideration before making that leap,
as follows:
Financial Implications
Now that you’re splitting your
domestic costs, both of you can enjoy
extra savings. Nevertheless, you should
set certain ground rules beforehand,
as money can become divisive. For
instance, will you equally pay for the
rent/mortgage? Who will handle the
bills or paying for groceries? While it
may not sound romantic, deciding on
who is covering what ahead of time
will save misunderstandings down the
road.
Who Owns What?
You’re madly in love; your
relationship is unlike any other; and
it’s on entirely unshakeable ground.
It makes total sense that your books,
records, and other possessions should
come together as one, forever and
always. However, in the very unlikely
event that the two of you should
one day part ways, separating your
possessions can be exceedingly
challenging and painful. Give some
thought to recording what’s yours at
the outset, just in case.
Protect Yourself
Romance comes in many forms. It’s
in the little things, like inside jokes,
spontaneous outings, and surprise
presents, as well as in the big things,
like moving in together. And when you
do the latter, you can take it one step
further and update your insurance
policy.
“If you add someone to your
homeowner’s policy, removing him or
her can be very difficult. In fact, you
may need to resort to halting payments
to have the policy cancelled so you
can remove them,” says James Hall,
an insurance expert with Western
Financial Group. “Instead, either
add the person as what’s called an
‘additional insured’ or have them get
their own tenant package.”
The same should be applied to
updating your car insurance if you
plan to share a vehicle. Whatever you
decide, start by talking to your broker.
Now that you’ve given all of the
above some thought, you can move in
together with a bit more peace of mind.
More answers to questions about the
nuances of insurance when it comes
to cohabitation can be found online at
www.westernfinancialgroup.ca.
5 secrets for winning a post-secondary scholarship
(NC) Each year, thousands of
Canadian students earn scholarships
that help them offset their education
costs. Surprisingly, over $15 million of
the $70 million available each year in
scholarship dollars goes unclaimed,
according to industry estimates.
“Scholarships are a good source of
education funding – one that you don’t
have to pay back,” advises Melissa
Jarman, director of student banking at
RBC Royal Bank. “Don’t write yourself
off as an unqualified candidate. In
addition to funding school with your
savings, a part-time job, or a student
loan, you could receive an unexpected
Page 4
top-up. Even smaller scholarships will
help out with your expenses.”
Scholarships
are
available
throughout the year, so here are five
tips to help you explore your options:
1. Research: Check your college or
university’s financial aid department.
If you are in high school, check
to see what scholarships are
available to graduating students.
Take advantage of online resources
such as studentawards.com and
scholarshipscanada.com that match
you to available scholarships.
2. Be optimistic: If you’re not a
straight-A student, be aware that
not all scholarships are based on
academic standing. Some of them
reward civic engagement, leadership
experience, your heritage, affiliations,
or a particular skill.
3. Tap your network: You may find
scholarships are offered by your
employer, sports league or your bank.
Ask your parents if their employers
offer funding to children of employees.
4. Plan ahead and start early: Be
prepared to devote time towards
fulfilling scholarship criteria. There
are often essays, questionnaires and
school transcripts to submit, so allot
your time wisely for maximum impact.
For Advertising Information please call: 905.420.4123 or 416.779.2523
5. Be conscientious: Proofread your
application and ensure you followed
all the instructions. Ask friends and
family to review your application
before you send it.
Jarman says that RBC provides
over $550,000 in annual scholarships,
including the Students Leading
Change Scholarships, the Aboriginal
Student
Awards
Program
and
Scholarship Program for the Children
of RBC Employees. More information
is available online at scholarships.rbc.

Durham College students
provide glimpse into college
life with Experience DC
This year, Durham College (DC)
is changing the way it connects
with prospective and current
students, parents, teachers, and the
community with Experience DC,
a new and innovative approach to
its ongoing marketing initiatives.
Fourteen Durham College (DC)
students – Team Experience – started
their school year in September
by launching a social networking
website where they’re sharing their
stories with you. Representing a wide cross-section
of programs, personal interests and
personalities, Team Experience has
connected on Facebook, Twitter and
Instagram more than 20,000 times,
on YouTube more than 150,000 times,
and through more than 100 amazing
blogs to give you authentic, real-time
accounts of life at DC from their own
perspective.
“We are giving the world a view of
the walking path of 14 very different
college students for a year,” said
Josephine Spitale, an Experience
DC team member and second-year
Paralegal student. “We interact with
Vol. 9 Iss. 02 – February 2015
fellow and prospective students,
share our experiences and illustrate
the amazing community that
Durham College is. Those following
our stories will watch our highs,
our difficulties and our growth in
this period. They will be part of our
journey and, in some way, we will be
part of theirs. This is Experience DC.
This is Durham College. This is us.”
These incredible students come
from all walks of life – here, you’ll
find someone to relate to whether
it’s a parent balancing schoolwork
with family life, a student on a
journey to study in Canada from
abroad, a first-year student straight
from high school, a returning grad,
or one of the other unique members
of Team Experience. Be a part of it. Visit www.
durhamcollege.ca/experience to
follow along to check out their
adventures, see what college life is
really all about, and discover what
more than 67,000 alumni already
know – at DC the student Experience
comes first.

Our Philosophy is Choice
Choosing a Corporate Name
In previous articles, we have
addressed issues involving
incorporation and its benefits.
Here we go back to the very first
steps of incorporation - choosing
a corporate name.
When incorporating, you
have the option of opting for a
numbered company. If you wish
to have a named company, you
are required to obtain a name
report known as a NUANS report.
The NUANS report compares
your proposed name with the
registered names. The idea is to
avoid not only conflict but major
similarities where customers
or clients might confuse one
business with the other. The
risk is not only that customers
might be misinformed or misled
by a company name but also the
possibility of the Corporation that
registered its name first suing the
second one for loss of profits.
Similarly, names suggesting
connection to the crown or the
levels of government are prohibited.
Representing a company as
Vol. 9 Iss. 02 – February 2015
involved in a particular activity
which requires a licence from its
governing body is also prohibited
without proper written consent.
For example, a company with the
word “engineer” or “engineering”
in its name would need special
permission from Professional
Engineers Ontario.
Searching the yellow pages,
searching on the internet and
any other source where business
names would be available is a
good way to start and identify
conflicts. Each official NUANS
report requires a fee, which
means, if a name is chosen (to
submit and receive a NUANS
report) without adequate due
diligence, one could easily spend
hundreds of dollars trying to find
a unique name that has not been
already registered. Many on-line
service providers offer the NUANS
search report service.
What
should be kept in mind is that
these reports are valid (the name
is reserved) for 90 days. If you do
not incorporate your company
within that time, the NUANS will
or federal incorporations. A

Should you require assistance
and depending on how long it has
with incorporating your company
passed since its expiry, the name
at any stage of the process, do not
might no longer be available.

Check to see if your retirement savings are safe
(NC) Retirement is on the horizon,
so now you are likely spending far
less time dreaming about it, and
more time actually planning it. As
you focus on your hard-earned
savings, are you sure all of your
money is safe? The failure, or the
bankruptcy of a financial institution
is not beyond possibilities in Canada
– and not all deposits are insured.
Take a minute now to understand the
different types of deposits and how
to apply this information to your own
retirement plan.
First,
the
Canada
Deposit
Insurance Corporation (CDIC) is the
federal agency that exists to protect
the savings of Canadians in the event
their bank fails or goes bankrupt. If
you have an eligible account held in
Canadian dollars at a CDIC member
institution, you’re automatically
insured up to $100,000.
The first thing you should know is
that, while deposits up to $100,000
are insured, not all deposits are
covered, as follows:
Insured Deposits
You will receive insurance on:
• Savings and chequing accounts;
• GICs or other term deposits with an
original term to maturity of 5 years or
less;
• Money orders, certified cheques,
travellers’ cheques and bank drafts
issued by CDIC members;
• Accounts that hold realty taxes on
mortgaged properties.
Uninsured Deposits
There is no insurance coverage for:
• Mutual funds and stocks;
• GICs, and other term deposits with
a date to maturity of more than 5
years;
• Bonds and Treasury bills
• Foreign currency, including U.S.
dollar accounts.
You will be covered up to $100,000
separately for each of the eligible
accounts you hold: an account in one
name, an account in joint names, for
a trust account, and for the RRSPs,
RRIFs, and TFSAs you own.
Here, from CIDC are tips for
applying this information to your
retirement plan:
1. Personal Accounts/Joint Accounts
– If you’re looking to maximize your
insurance protection, it’s good to
remember that deposits held in one
name are protected separately from
those held jointly. So, if you have
personal deposits, your spouse has
personal deposits, and you own
deposits jointly, you would have total
coverage of up to $300,000.
2. Trust Deposits – CDIC insures trust
deposits separately from deposits
held personally by the trustee or
the beneficiary. In this instance, the
deposits are separately insured per
beneficiary not per depositor. So
a trust account in which your five
grandchildren have an equal share
could be protected up to $500,000.
3. Spousal RRSPs – Eligible deposits
held in an RRSP are insured
separately from other eligible
deposits. In the case of a spousal
RRSP, the contributor and the
owner are different people. Eligible
contributions are added to other
registered deposits in the name of the
spouse or common-law partner for
whom the plan is established – and
not with the contributor’s deposits.
4. Foreign currency – If you are a
snowbird or considering becoming
one, it’s important to remember
that CDIC does not insure foreign
currency, including U.S. dollar
accounts.
To take responsibility for your
money and to keep it safe in your
retirement, information is available
from your financial advisor, as well
as online at cdic.ca.
How to get through tax season with a smile
(NC) Spring is not far off, but with
one hurdle first: tax time.
Turn it into an advantage for
yourself with a few easy tips:
File, pay on time – and online
If you owe taxes, file and pay on
time and you won’t get charged late
filing penalties and interest. If you
don’t owe taxes, you should still
file on time. This will ensure that
you receive your Canada child tax
benefits or GST/HST credit without
delay. If you’re expecting a refund,
you can have it in your bank account
in as little as eight days if you file
online and sign up for direct deposit. Claim your tax credits
• Medical expenses – You can claim
amounts spent on eligible medical
expenses, including prescription
drugs, medical devices, and special
dietary needs. If you have medical
coverage through your employer,
you can claim the amounts that were
not covered by the plan.
• Charitable donations – If it’s your first
time claiming charitable donations,
or your first time since 2007, you
may get an extra 25% credit your
donation, to a maximum of $1,000. • Fitness and arts credits for kids
– The children’s fitness and arts
tax credits help make the cost of
art lessons and organized fitness
Page 12
activities for your children under 16
a little more affordable. You can
claim up to $1,000 (under proposed
changes) in eligible fitness-related
expenses, and up to $500 in eligible
arts-related expenses per child.
• Family Tax Cut – It’s a proposed
non-refundable tax credit of up to
$2,000 available to eligible couples
with children under the age of 18,
and is effective starting with the 2014
tax year. Ask for help
If you have a modest income, a
simple tax situation, and need help
completing and filing your return,
many community organizations host
tax clinics that may be able to help
you. To see if you are eligible for
the Community Volunteer Income
Tax Program go to www.cra.gc.ca/
volunteer.
Ask for a payment plan
The Canada Revenue Agency
(CRA) understands that some
taxpayers may be going through
a tough time. If you owe taxes but
can’t pay, talk to the CRA about your
situation. You may be able to set up a
payment arrangement which lets you
pay in smaller chunks over time. More
information is available at www.cra.
gc.ca/paymentarrangements. Don’t leave your taxes to chance
Getting a refund or having a
balance owing when you file your
return is not like winning or losing
the lottery. It’s simple math. If you’re
consistently getting a refund, it
means you’re paying too much tax
during the year. If you always have a
balance owing, consider having more
taxes deducted at source, increasing
your instalment payments, or putting
money into a registered retirement
savings plan.
