Dcf grant workshops offered
Non-profit organizations in Dallas County looking to
fund projects that address significant issues and improve
the quality of life for residents can now submit grant applications to the Dallas County Foundation (DCF). Over
$80,000 in grants will be awarded in 2015.
Grant application instructions and requirements will be
explained at two workshops. The first will be held Wednesday, February 11 at the Waukee Public Library Community
Room. The second will be held Monday, March 2 at the
Perry Public Library Community Room. Both will be begin
at 6:30 p.m. These workshops are free and open to the
public. Any qualified organization is welcome to attend.
Applicants must be a 501 (c) 3, 5 or 6 organization or
107 (b) unit of government. Grant application deadline is
Monday, April 13 at 5 p.m.
Grants from $500 to $20,000 will be provided in the
areas of health and human services; arts and culture; youth
development; education; recreation; or the environment
and community betterment. The Dallas County Foundation, an affiliate of Greater Des Moines Community
Foundation was established in 2005 to foster private giving, strengthen service providers and improve the conditions of the communities and rural areas of Dallas County,

obituary: Donald Gruver, Adel
Donald Joseph Gruver, 84 of Adel was born in Emmetsburg, IA to Charles and Gladys (Rubel) Gruver. He passed
away January 24 at the Perry Lutheran Home in the loving
arms of his family. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday,
January 27 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Adel. McCalley
Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Don proudly enlisted in the US Army and served two
tours of duty in Korea from 1950 to 1953. He lived in
Chicago prior to moving to Des Moines and worked at St.
Theresa’s Catholic Church in Des Moines and retired from
C. H. McGuiness Co. in Des Moines in 1992. He enjoyed
family construction projects, square dancing, camping and
going to Texas in the winter. His greatest joy was his family, kidding around and just having fun. He is survived by
his wife of 43 years, Jean (Smith); children David Gruver,
Don (Amy) Gruver, Dan (Denice) Gruver, Dennis (Laura)
Gruver, Tina (Kris) Johnson, Dale (Melissa) Gruver, Darin
(Misty) Gruver, and Theresa Garrey, 14 grandchildren,
15 great grandchildren; siblings Robert Gruver, Cleone
Crawford and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Gruver, grandson, Jared Gruver, brothers, Ken, John, Duane, Ron, sisterin-law Lavonne Gruver and daughter-in-law Cindy Gruver.
He was a member of the American Legion of Adel and Boys
Town Alumni Assn. Memorial contributions may be made
to the Don Gruver Memorial Fund for a commemorative
project within the community. Online condolences can be

The Adel Public Library wants to spread a very special
story of hope this month as we welcome speaker and author
Hannah Trebec. Hannah will share the unbelievable story of
her life, growing up on the East German side of the Berlin
Wall. After the wall was torn down in 1989, she took away
a very hopeful story and a piece of the Berlin Wall with her
as well. Hannah then moved to Iowa in 1995. She will share
her experiences, sign books, and discuss her book, Double
Cover Up. We are honored that she is coming to share her
brave story with us on Saturday, February 7 at 11 a.m.

next early out movie "How to Train Your Dragon 2." We
will have popcorn!
Our Brown Bag Book Club will be held on Thursday,
