Friar’s Musings: Friar Clifford Augustine, OFM
Reclaiming the Sanctity of our Celebration
A parishioner walks into church for Mass. She tries to find a seat, she spots a vacant
space only to find that some spaces have been reserved with bags. She finally finds a
seat in the middle of the pew and at the back of the church. After settling down to pray
and prepare for the celebration, she gets distracted. There is the incessant chatting, no
more in hushed whispers but fairly loudly not that whispering is condoned. She notices
a child playing with her parents’ mobile, and some others checking their Facebook
accounts and smsing (even when done surreptitiously – others can see what you are up
to unfortunately). When Mass starts and right up to the Gospel reading, people are still
entering the church, oblivious of the importance of the Word of God being proclaimed.
Sound familiar?
Well this happens every Sunday, and every Mass in church. Many parishioners are
disturbed by the apparent lack of social awareness among some. I refer to it as a lack of
Church etiquette.
While everyone has the right to celebrate the Eucharist, everyone also has the right
to a meaningful and prayerful partaking of what is the most important and valued
celebration for us Catholics. Some behaviours in church can rob others of a meaningful
celebration.
When Catholics gather on Sundays, we celebrate the very essence of our faith – the
dying and rising of Jesus, which is the Paschal Mystery. Without this, there is certainly
no meaning in what we do. Our full, active and conscious participation of this mystery
therefore must not be shared with other distractions.
So perhaps it is time to reclaim what is ours – the sanctity of the Mass. We must be
aware that what we do in Church affects others around us. We respect the sacred space
of the Church that other disciples of Jesus too are in, all yearning to be touched by God.
So let nothing distract us from what the Mass is all about. And let us continue to help
each other with good social habits.
God bless you and your family always.

GOOD NEWS
Capernaum, hometown of Simon and Andrew, became
Jesus’ home base too. On the Sabbath, he went out to
the synagogue to teach with authority over physical
and spiritual evils. He dramatically cast out devils, curing
Simon’s mother-in-law and healing many other sick
people. Jesus went about the messianic work. That labor
came to fruition as he cast out death itself in his passover
to resurrection. Bolstered by prayer, Jesus single-mindedly

LITURGICAL UPDATE
Liturgy, the Word
Liturgy is a Greek word that means “the work of the people.” What makes our
liturgy a “shared” work? We sing; we sit in silence; we listen and speak; we stand,
embrace, eat, and drink. In all these actions (including formalised or ritualised
communication) we speak to one another and to God with our bodies and our
voices, and we “listen” not just with our hearing but with all our senses. The
real communication of the liturgy is the moments that it offers us for being still
in an open and loving relationship with God and one another. Liturgy is not
something we do for God. It is our opportunity to be in touch with God and
enlarge our experience of God, to be with God, to hear God, to know God.
When it works, it changes who we are and how we live.
