PAWS limits public access for two weeks
ANDERSON COUNTY - Public
access to Anderson County PAWS
(Pets Are Worth Saving) will be
limited for the next two weeks following the detection of parvovirus
in three dogs.
“Out of an abundance of caution,
we have implemented a targeted
two-week quarantine of our facility,”
said PAWS director Jessica Cwynar.
“Three animals brought to us within
the past week began showing symptoms of parvovirus shortly after
entering our facility. The normal
incubation time for these viruses is
generally less than 14 days.”
The standard operating procedures for Anderson County PAWS
call for either the euthanasia or quarantine of all animals that may have
been exposed to parvovirus.
The PAWS management team has
decided to impose a two-week quarantine in order to avoid the unnecessary mass euthanasia of the animals.
Not all animals at PAWS are subject to the quarantine, and no dogs or
cats involved with any current court
cases are at risk. However, day-today public access will be limited during the two-week quarantine period.
•PAWS will not accept any dropoffs or surrenders of animals by the
general public until the two-week
quarantine is lifted. Animals seized
by law enforcement during that time
will continue to be received at the
PAWS facility.

Free throws, dunks sink Razorbacks
NEWS-CHRONICLE - February 4, 2015 - Page 5
HONEA PATH -- The BHP
boys’ basketball team picked up
two more region wins last week
as it defeated Walhalla 72-59 and
West-Oak 53-45.
It took six minutes before the
Bears could get their offense going against Walhalla, who opened
the game with a three-man weave
at mid court. The other Razorback
players camped in the two corners
and waited for an opportunity to
break for the basket.
“Their weave ran time off the
clock and they tried to get us out of
our rhythm,” said BHP coach Russ
Tysl. “They also ran a box-and-one
on AT [Aaron Taylor] and we didn’t
expect that.”
The Bears countered with a
zone defense to prevent Walhalla
from holding the ball.
BHP tied the game at two and
four points before taking an 8-7
lead when Xavier Hawthorne
scored a lay-up off a tipped ball by
Malcolm Williams.
After the Razorbacks tied the
game at eight, Hawthorne went
coast-to-coast and the Bears never
trailed again. They doubled their
score over the last minute and a
half of the first quarter.
Hawthorne, Marcus Williams
and Juwann Abney made a good
defensive play and got a 10-second
call on the the Razorbacks. Malcolm Williams scored on a lay-up.
Hawthorne hit from outside the
arc. Aaron Taylor stole the ball,
passed to Hawthorne, who passed
to Marcus Williams, who to the
delight of the fans, performed a
two-hand slam.
Both twin towers, Marcus and
Malcolm, had a dunk in the second
quarter and Taylor dished out two
assists. The Bears led by seven at
the half.
The Bears returned to the court
with a 12-2 run over the first four
minutes of the third quarter. Their
lead dwindled to 10 by the end of
the quarter.
With less than two minutes left
to play, Walhalla tried to cut into
the lead by fouling. Taylor and
Hawthorne sank a combined eight
free throws to stop the attempt.
However, the Razorbacks sank two
three-pointers over the same time
frame to add even more pressure.
Malcolm Williams scored 17 of
his game-high 27 points over the
last 16 minutes.
Hawthorne, who had a dozen
second half points, chipped in 23
for the game. He had nerves of
steel on the free throw line, sinking
seven of eight, and made six in a
row over the last 48 seconds.
“I want to be clutch for my
team,” said Hawthorne. “I wanted
to knock them down. I practice
free throws every day and I never
doubted they were going in.”
The lean-mean-dunking machines, both over 6 foot, 5 inches,
had a total of five dunks for the
game, with Malcolm slamming
three.
“All five of our starters can
dunk so it’s anybody’s game and
it’s fun,” said Tysl. “A dunk gets
the crowd into the game. They like
to see them. As a team we’ve had
over 40 for the season.”
It was another up and down
game with BHP’s lead tottering between 17 and four points throughout the last three quarters.
“We never could sustain that
15-point edge,” said Tysl. “I just

you don’t want teams that are not
as good hanging around and feeling
like they can play with you.
“Despite the closeness at times,
I never really thought the game
was in doubt. Tonight was another
spurt game. We were outstanding
in spurts and not so outstanding
in other spurts. I’m happy with a
13-point, win at home.”
BHP came from behind Friday
to beat West-Oak on the road.
After trailing by three after the
first eight minutes, the Bears went
on a 16-12 run to take a one-point
lead to the locker room.
Both teams had trouble scoring
in the third quarter. The Bears (146, 10-0) outscored the Warriors 7-4
over the eight minutes.
BHP took charge in the fourth

with a 21-17 run to remain unbeaten in region play.
“It was a sloppily played quarter
by both teams,” said Tysl. “WestOak held the ball for at least 25-30
seconds on all their possessions,
so in turn we began rushing shots
and not trying to get the best shot.
There were also several fouls
called, so neither team was able to
get in a good flow. It was an ugly,
ugly game from a pure spectator
standpoint. Honestly, I feel bad
for the people who paid $5 to come
watch.”
The Bears will play Seneca at
home Friday. Bear fans need to fill
the gym for this important region
game.

HONEA PATH -- The Lady
Bears fought off a fourth-quarter
surge by Walhalla Friday and came
out with a 50-44 region win.
Leading 26-20 at the half, BHP
outscored the Razorbacks 14-6 in
the third quarter to take a comfortable lead.
The comfort soon changed to
intensity as Walhalla hit four long
three’s and the Lady Bears (14-4,
7-2) saw a 16-point lead dwindle to
10 with 2:40 left in the game.
Zipporah Scott slowed the
game with her dribble and ran time
off the clock.
“Walhalla is a very good team,”
said BHP coach Rafael Traynum.
“They’ve had some very close
losses in the region. Senior leader
Brianna Richardson is a tough
cover.”
The job to contain Richardson
was given to Dominique Duck.
“She did a great job on her to
hold her down,” said Traynum.
“Walhalla is a very dangerous
team. We only beat them by two at
their place. I have a lot of respect
for them and their new coach.”
Walhalla’s coach agreed with
Traynum. “They held my best
player,” he said.
“I’m proud of my girls for the
way they executed in the third
quarter to extend the lead,” said
Traynum. “We needed that lead
because they got hot in the fourth
quarter. I’m thankful that we had
enough cushion to survive that.
They moved the ball and scored
quickly, but we made enough plays
to win.”
Scott took high-game honors
with 25, 18 coming in the first half.
Vieandra Dixon added 18 points.
