Green spaces, unique shops and intimate
sidewalk cafes make downtown Celebration
ideal for a casual stroll. If you’d like to learn
the story behind this unique township, you can
opt for a self-guided walking tour that ushers
you through a scenic half-mile loop, while
showcasing the work of some of America’s
most noteworthy architects along the way.
You’ll run across directional signposts for the
tour throughout downtown, but it’s best to start
at the beginning, on the corner of Celebration
Avenue and Market Street. Here you’ll find the
distinctive tower of the Preview Center, the last
creation of renowned architect Charles Moore.
This structure pays homage to the working-class
roots of small-town Americana, in the tradition
of water towers and grain elevators that became focal points for the town’s skyline.
A wall down Celebration Avenue brings
you to Founders Park and aptly-named Campus Street. This is the site of the town’s primary

school, and the Stetson University Center at
Celebration, which provides lifelong learning
programs. The route continues along Bloom
Street to the Bohemian Hotel. This four-star
property was designed by Graham Gund to
evoke the linear simplicity of a 1920’s Florida
wood frame lodge, complete with tin roof.
Take a few minutes to explore the lobby, which
features artwork and décor that pay tribute to
the state’s Aboriginal people. The hotel’s terrace provides water views of Lake Rianhard,
and an ideal place to pause for refreshment.
From the Bohemian, the walking tour
follows Front Street around the lake shore,
where one can pause for a bit of relaxation
twist. You are now back on Market Street, and
the town’s Welcome Center. One of the final
designs of Philip Johnson, this red-brick structure serves as a gathering point for residents
and visitors, and is surrounded by white-columned porches that invite one to linger.
The walking circuit completes at the adjacent town post office. Architect Michael
Graves based its design on a historic postal landmark in St. Petersburg, Florida, using
board-and-batten construction, exposed
beam ceilings and an open-air loggia to create a casual and welcoming atmosphere that
encourages neighbors to linger and chat while
gathering their mail.

Moving on to Sycamore Street brings you
to the SunTrust Bank, which was created by
the team of Robert Venturi and Denise ScottBrown as an homage to neoclassical, turn-ofthe-century bank buildings, but with a modern

Owners lavish a final finishing polish on
immaculate paint and give tires yet another
precursory dusting; chrome accents flash in the
sun as admirers stroll by on Market Street. A late
arrival turns from Front Street and parks a compact white sedan between a pair of gleaming
vintage convertibles. A crowd gathers. To those
in the know, this is a highlight of the 12th Annual
Alfa Romeo Car Show at Celebration. The automobile in question, a 1964 Giulietta TL, is thought
to be the only one of its kind in North America.
“It is the same model my father owned, and
what I learned to drive as a teenager back in Italy,” explains owner Carlo Amalfitano. After years
of searching the Old Country, and more than a
decade of painstaking restoration at his Florida
residence, Amalfitano is showing this car for the
first time. “It’s the perfect place to present it,” he
says. “Celebration has a wonderful ambiance,
and visitors from around the world.”
It’s not the biggest show of its kind, but it’s one
of the best, agrees Delmas Greene. An international judge, he travels to car shows across the U.S.
and beyond, but especially enjoys the fall event at
Celebration. Like most car owners exhibiting here,
he is justifiably proud of the thousands of hours
of attention he’s devoted to his classic Giulietta
Spider, and eager to share the car’s design details
and history. “I’m only the second owner of this
car,” he says, “and each year I invite the original
owners to take it out for an anniversary drive.”
Up and down the street, similar stories unfold
throughout the morning, as enthusiasts gather
and passers by pause to snap photos. With blue
skies and crisp temperatures, it’s an idyllic day to
be out and about, and even for those with only
a passing interest in classic cars, the show provides an additional dimension to their morning,
and one more reason to come downtown on
an autumn weekend to see what’s happening.

Too often, the artwork encountered in the
public areas of otherwise upscale hotels is little
more than generic window dressing. This is
definitely not the case at the Bohemian Hotel
Celebration, where the lobby, hallways and
public rooms are transformed into a dynamic
gallery of original works showcasing the
talents of re nowned local, national and
international artists.
This gallery style display of original art
is a practice common to all ten hotels in the
prestigious Kessler Collection, and at each
property, guests are invited to enjoy the offerings
either on their own or with the guidance of a
staff member who is well versed in the stories
and details behind each artist and each work
of art. Art exhibitions are staged monthly, and
returning guests are often delighted to discover
new treasures gracing the walls, as artwork is
rotated quarterly. For example, during a visit
in the winter of 2014, the collection at the
Bohemian Hotel Celebration included works by
Nina Buxton, Phillip Anthony and Mitch Kolbe.
The official artist of the Coast Guard for

Celebration resident Rob Kaz is a fine artist
noted for his evocative and sometimes whimsical paintings, many of which have ties to Disney
themes. Rob’s creative ambitions began with
his artist father. After graduating from the University of Central Florida, he decided to pursue
his passion for art. He found work as a visual
development artist at small studios founded
by former Disney animators. It was a golden
opportunity, he recalls, “to work alongside quite
possibly the most talented artists I’ve ever known.”
Ultimately, his talents won him a role in
video games at EA Sports as a character artist.
At the same time, he continued to pursue his

passion for painting, and eventually turned this
into a full-time profession. Today, his signature
artwork continues to reflect his backgrounds in
animation and video game art, and often hints
at his life-long passion for the water. “When I
create, I allow my mind to wander,” he says. “My
works usually feature the twin themes of ‘places
I’d rather be,’ and ‘friends along the way.’”
Rob can often be seen on the streets of Celebration in the company of his beloved dogs,
Kira and Beauregard, both of whom have been
featured in his paintings.

FOOD TRUCK FRIDAYS

It’s an event that’s become one of Celebration’s favorite home town happenings. On the
second Friday evening of each month, folks
and food trucks come together to mingle and
nosh. The gathering takes place from 5 to 9
p.m. at the Celebration Town Hall parking
lot, and brings together a dozen or more of
Central Florida’s finest mobile kitchens. The
food truck roster changes each month, and
can include anything from Korean Barbecue and English Fish ‘n Chips to good old

Holiday lights, falling snow, strolling carolers
and visits with Santa. It’s a small town Christmas at its best, and the only hints that you
are still in Florida may be the cool but still
pleasant temperatures and the lights in the
palm trees along Market Street. Welcome
to Now Snowing, the Town of Celebration’s
annual holiday festival, which fills the month
of December with all the iconic traditions
and images of the season. Just days after
the Thanksgiving turkey is carved, the festiv-
ities kick off with a lighting ceremony of the
town’s communal Christmas tree. This iconic
landmark is the crowning jewel of a twinkling
array of lights that ring the shores of Lake Rianhard and frame the buildings and streets
of downtown Celebration. Adjacent to the
tree, the town’s communal activity center is
transformed into Santa’s house, where youngsters drop off wish lists and pose for photos
on the lap of jolly old St. Nick himself. Each
weekend throughout the month, there are
free concerts lakeside, and nightly flurries of
synthetic snow drift down from the rooftops.
While the white stuff doesn’t stick, it certainly
adds to the Currier and Ives-like ambiance, as
do the strolling Charles Dickens Carolers and
the horse drawn carriages that ply the downtown streets. For 15 years, Celebration’s Now
Snowing has remained Central Florida’s premier holiday tradition, and for anyone with a
fondness for small-town nostalgia and the
Christmas season, it’s not to be missed.
