Dear Parents/Guardians and Patrons,
SETTING LIMITS
We all have to establish limits in our lives. We have to enforce limits on ourselves and often need to enforce limits for
our children, but children benefit from having clear boundaries. Answer the following questions yes or no to see if
you’re effective in setting and enforcing limits for your child:
1. Do you restrict the number of limits you set, knowing that kids are more likely to follow limits that are
important to parents?
2. Do you set limits that are easy for your child to understand?
3. Do you consistently enforce those limits?
4. Do you involve your child in setting limits and deciding the consequences for violating them?
5. Do you let your child know the “why” behind the limits you set?
How well did you do?” Each yes answer means you are effectively helping your child understand the boundaries you
set for acceptable behavior. For each no answer, try that idea from the quiz.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Aberle, Supt.

Notes from the Counselor
In our school, the National Association of Educational Progress assessment will be given on March 4, 2015 to grades
4 and 8. These students have been selected to take a mathematics, reading, or science assessment. In addition to
answering questions in one of these subjects, students will be asked questions about themselves and their
educational experiences, such as the amount of reading they do and the types of classes they take. These questions
provide contextual information for the assessment, as well as information that may be related to students’ learning. If
you would like to view sample subject area and contextual questions, please visit
http://nationsreportcard.gov/parents.asp.
High School Students – Explore a Career in Health Care!! Health Occupations & Professions Exploration (HOPE)
is a summer camp sponsored by Sanford Health and NDSU. This hands-on, interactive opportunity uses workshops,
panel discussions, and simulations to expose rural students to health careers. Contact Dana Davis
([email protected], 701-231-7837) for more information.
Our school has been invited to participate in a new program called the BackPack Program
in partnership with the Great Plains Food Bank. If we have enough interest in our school
district, the BackPack program will provide a backpack full of kid-friendly, shelf-stable food
for your child to take home and eat over the weekend. They will receive foods like cereal,
pudding, soup, fruit, granola bars, microwavable meals, snacks and other items. Once the
program is launched, we will send a bag of food home with your child every Friday for the
remainder of the school year for those who participate. Please know there is never a charge for this program and
participation is kept strictly confidential; it’s entirely funded through grants and private donations. If you would like
your child to participate, please fill out the form below and have your child bring it to the counselor’s office. You may
also call and talk to the counselor (Julie Kaspari 427-5237) anytime to find out more information.
Please indicate below if you would like your child to participate by checking one of the options and signing:

Larson’s Lowdown
For this month I’ve decided to answer a few common questions about eligibility as it pertains to extra-curricular
activities.
The first thing to consider is that eligibility is a cumulative look at a student’s grade in a particular class. Sometimes
the feeling is that if you “fail” a week, you are ineligible. That’s not necessarily so (although taking a few poor grades
in a class will certainly drop your grade). It is the total grade we look at.
Timing is another common question. We check grades weekly, and eligibility refreshes on a weekly basis. Typically,
I check grades at the end of the week and have conversations with students on Friday (that’s not the policy- that’s
just what we’ve done and it seems to work well for us). A student’s eligibility starts the following week.
Here’s a scenario:
A boys’ basketball player is failing a class when grades are checked on Friday. The boys have games Saturday and
Monday. The student can plan on Saturday (Saturday is part of the prior weeks’ eligibility) and is ineligible on
Monday.
 A good way to remember it is to think of a week running Sunday – Saturday.
So far, we’ve just been talking about students with F’s. Any failing grade makes a student ineligible- no pass, no
play. There are some limits for students with D’s. A student with a D is only allowed to leave school early once a
week. This does not come into play very often. Typically, we are not leaving early multiple days for high school
games, but since we have C squads this year, it’s more and more likely. It definitely can impact JH students. They
start their games at 4 or 4:30P.M. so they leave early nearly all of the time.
With any question on eligibility, I am the person to talk to. If something ever comes up that I can clarify, please shoot
me an email or give me a call at school.

5th Grade Girls Club: The 5th grade girls have been meeting every Friday to spend time fostering positive relationships and
learn how to combat relational aggression. We have spent quite a bit of time learning how to identify mean girl behavior and what
we can do to stop it from creeping into our relationships. Origami projects reminding us to protect our hearts and those of our
classmates have been a lot of fun. We will continue to meet for the next couple of months.

Frosty Weather
Please make sure students come prepared with cold weather gear, including
winter coats, boots, snow pants, hats, and gloves. Children need to be
protected against the cold during recess breaks and when traveling to and
from school. We try to go outside for recess, weather permitting, so the kids
can get fresh air and have room to run and play.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Elementary students are encouraged to attend and be good fans at the high
school events, but the following rules are to be adhered to:
o Be respectful during the National Anthem.
o Stay off the gym floor.
o Refrain from loitering, running or horseplay in the halls or restrooms.
o Sit in the gym during the game.
o Demonstrate good sportsmanship.
Please make sure that your students are following these guidelines so as not to affect the game. Go Bison!
Go Bulldogs!
Spelling Bee
Milnor Public School will host the Sargent County Spelling Bee on
February 18th at 1:00pm. Middle school students from Sargent
Central, North Sargent and Milnor Schools will compete for an
opportunity to go to the State Spelling Bee. Students representing
Milnor (pictured left to right) are: Josh Martinson, Meadow Driver,
Brandt Larson and Amaree Lovett (alternate).
Healthy Snacks
As part of our Coordinated School Health Wellness Policy, snacks for
school are required to be nutritious and healthy. Studies show that
students who are well nourished have a better opportunity for
academic success.
Parent-Teacher Conferences:
P/T Conferences will be held February 10th. Please look for
scheduling information from your child’s teacher. All parents are
encouraged to attend.
Chess Club
Mr. Pribula and Mr. Syrstad have started an elementary chess
club that meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.

Recommended Immunizations for Adolescents
Tdap- Tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis
Tetanus- is a bacterium found in soil. The bacterium enters the body through a wound or
cut. This can lead to “Lock jaw”, spasms and stiffness of all muscles. This could cause difficulty
in breathing.
Diptheria- is a contagious bacterial disease that affects the respiratory system. The
effects of this disease can cause swelling of the heart muscle and in some case heart failure.
Pertussis- is a bacteria spread through direct contact with respiratory droplets. In the
beginning it seems like a common cold, but in one to two weeks later coughing spells can get so
violent it becomes hard for a person to breathe, eat or drink. Infants up to 2 months old are very
vulnerable to this illness causing death.
HPV- Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine
Human papilloma Virus- is a common virus among teens and young adults. It is the
major cause of cervical cancer in women and genital warts in women and men.
MCV4- Meningococcal vaccine
Meningococcal- is a bacterium and is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis. It is
spread through exchange of nose and throat droplets, such as coughing, sneezing or kissing.
About one of every ten people who get the disease dies from it.
Hepatitis A Vaccine
Hepatitis A- is a virus that affects the liver. It is primarily spread through fecal- oral route.
In other words, the virus is taken in by mouth from contact with objects, food, or drinks
contaminated by the feces of an infected person. In the US, about 100 people a year die from
hepatitis A.
