John G. Clarkson Freshman Pinning Ceremony
Schoninger Research Quadrangle
Now in its 15th year, this ceremony has become a treasured tradition, emphasizing the
humanism of medicine. First-year students are welcomed into the UM family of
physicians as they are symbolically pinned by alumni and academic society leaders.
This year’s guest speaker is Margaret A. Fischl, M.D. ’76, professor of medicine and
Director, AIDS Clinical Research Unit.
Margaret A. Fischl, M.D. ’76
Dr. Margaret A. Fischl is a professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School
of Medicine and Director of the University Miami AIDS Clinical
Research Unit, the Co-Director for the Miami Center for AIDS
Research (CFAR) and the leader of the CFAR Clinical Core. Dr. Fischl
has chaired or co-chaired more than 50 HIV/AIDS clinical trials
including many of the key studies that have led to the current
treatments for HIV/AIDS, starting with the initial Zidovudine study.
Inducted into the UM Medical Alumni Association Hall of Fame in
1998, Fischl also has been an organizer of one of the top six HIV/AIDS
programs in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report.

who will be celebrating their 45th, 40th, 35th, 30th, 20th, 15th, and 10th reunions.
This year we will induct Aileen M. Marty, M.D., into the UM Medical Alumni Association
Hall of Fame.
Aileen M. Marty, M.D. ’82
Aileen M. Marty, M.D., is a professor of infectious diseases in the
Department of Medicine at the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of
Medicine. She graduated from UM and pursued her medical
education at the UM Miller School of Medicine. She served in the U.S.
Navy for 25 years specializing in tropical medicine, infectious disease
pathology, disaster medicine, medical response, and policy involving
weapons of mass destruction. She has served as a professor of
emerging infections and pathology at the Uniformed Services
University, The Johns Hopkins University, the National Defense
University, and The University of Valencia, Spain. She has worked with and for the
World Health Organization in Europe, the Americas, and Africa, most recently in the
fight against the 2014 Ebola epidemic in Nigeria.
