FAITHFUL LOVE
Jeannene was
born into a very
loving family. She
was blessed with
wonderful parents.
But, at a young age,
her world changed
dramatically. Before
Jeannene’s fifth
birthday, she lost both
her mother to cancer
and her father in a car
accident.
An aunt and uncle took in Jeannene and her siblings.
Jeannene speaks fondly of the Christian school she was
able to attend during those years: “School became my
escape from a world where I was not loved or wanted, to
an environment where I learned God loved and wanted
me.” Tragedy once again struck when Jeannene’s aunt died
suddenly. As a result, Jeannene was pulled out of the school
she loved, and she went to live with family in Oregon.
Life started to get better when Jeannene fell in love with, and
married her high school sweet heart. However, during her
first pregnancy, her husband began abusing her. “The abuse
wasn’t just physical, but mental and verbal…and he even
began abusing our children.” Jeannene’s husband eventually
left and she became a single parent to four children.
Jeannene responded by re-entering the workforce where she
was able to secure a great job. This allowed her to successfully
raise her children and take online classes in criminal
justice. She soon, however, became involved in a romantic
relationship that led her into a new world of alcohol and
prescription medications. She quickly became addicted.
Jeannene was ready for a change: “Because of the New
Life Fellowship program, I have learned to process my grief,
lean into the pain, and, most importantly, reconnect with
God.” Jeannene says, “I know God has always been with me
through all my trials and tribulations. All the love, acceptance,
and belonging I have been desperately seeking for my entire
life has been there all along, in God.”
Jeannene’s life verse, Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been
crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in
me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of
God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Jeannene now
embraces her new life in Christ and His faithful love.
Jeannene is on schedule to graduate from the NLF program
next month and plans to continue working on a degree
in Criminal Justice. She would love to work in parole and
probation. “If I can help one person through my testimony,
what I went through would be all worth it.”
Because of your faithful support and prayers, many men,
women and children are experiencing the life-changing
love of Jesus! Please join us in praying for Jeannene as she
approaches graduation and the transition back into our
community.

CELEBRATING CHRIST’S
LOVE
Del Maxfield // President/CEO
“Restoring Hope . . . Restoring Lives”
Mission & Purpose
What a wonderful Christmas Season we had here at UGM. While our hearts are
heavy from the obvious growing number of people in need, we rejoice that
so many give us the opportunity to touch their lives with Christ’s Love and life
sustaining provisions.
We praise God for the many volunteers who helped make it possible to serve and
reach out to our guests during our Christmas meal, and for that matter, everyday
of the week. Thank you for your service and time.
Then we praise God too, for you and the others who so generously gave of your
financial resources, which allow us to do the day-to-day work of the Kingdom of
“Restoring Hope…Restoring Lives”.
Just this past week, we celebrated the graduation of six of our New Life Fellowship
program participants. Six people whose lives had been devastated by drugs or
alcohol or both who had no hope for a future, are now celebrating the beginning
of a new life in Christ Jesus.
Blessings in Christ,
“Restoring Hope . . .
Restoring Lives”
Union Gospel Mission, a Christ-centered ministry
demonstrating God’s love by meeting physical, mental and spiritual needs of men, women and children
in crisis. Proclaiming the Gospel of Christ in word and
deed.
Partnering with churches, individuals and organizations to maximize our effectiveness, we help
the neediest of our community break the cycle of
homelessness, addiction and incarceration as men
and women experience dynamic transformation in
following Christ, and become contributing members
of our community.

relationship with Him.
Galatians 2:20; Colossians 1:25, 28
Client-Focused —
By our faith in Jesus Christ, we are called to demonstrate love, grace and compassion as we serve and
enrich the lives of others.
Galatians 5:14; Romans 5:8; Mark 6:34
Community-Connected —
Transformation and growth happen in community
and in collaboration with others.
Jeremiah 29:7; 1 Corinthians 12:12; Ephesians 4:3
Programs and Services
Every day hungry, hurting and homeless men, women and children come to
UGM of Salem seeking sustenance, shelter and hope. Sometimes all it takes
for a person to begin turning their life around is a nutritious meal served by
a caring and compassionate friend. Hope Partners help make this interaction
possible with their monthly donations.
As a Hope Partner your monthly gift helps UGM of Salem to provide nutritious
meals, safe shelter and life-changing programs. Your
monthly gift also increases our efficiency and gives
us the ability to plan and to implement sustainable
solutions for our neighbors in need.

LOVE AND GENEROSITY
Kyle Dickinson // Vice President of Advancement
Luke 7:36-50 tells the story of Jesus attending a dinner party.
It was quite common in Jesus’ day for community leaders
to invite distinguished guests to attend special dinners.
These dinners were held in a location so people of the town
could view the dining experience. At this particular dinner,
an uninvited woman crashes the party and makes quite a
scene. Luke tells us the woman emptied her expensive jar of
perfume onto Jesus’ feet and began to wash his feet with her
hair and her tears. The other distinguished guests around
the table were shocked at the woman’s behavior.
Jesus was not fazed by the woman’s actions. In fact, he
used the interaction to tell a story to Simon, the host of the
party. Jesus said, “Two people owed money to a certain
moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the
other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back,
so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love
him more?” (Luke 7:41-42, NIV)

Simon believed the one with the larger debt will love more.
This was the right answer, but it called into question Simon’s
lack of hospitality. The woman washed Jesus’ feet because
Simon had neglected to show Jesus the common courtesy
of a customary greeting which included washing his feet.
This woman had most likely observed Jesus being gracious
and merciful to the outcasts in the community. Therefore,
she was compelled to do what Simon should have done!
Jesus told the party guests about the connection between
forgiveness and love. In this case, love was expressed in the
woman’s generosity. Those who understand that their needs
have been met will overflow with generosity.
This story is a great reminder to me that an appropriate
response to love and forgiveness is generosity. As we
approach Valentine’s Day, a day to celebrate love, I pray we
would all embrace the love of Jesus and let love lead us to
be people of generosity.
COMMUNITY
in
ACTION
Our friends at Oasis Church held a coat and sock drive for the men, women and
children staying at UGM. Altogether, they collected 137 coats and 300 pairs of
socks!
Lynn and her daughter Hailey, who volunteer at
UGM’s Simonka Place, donated a whole car full of
blankets. Hailey purchased the blankets with her
birthday money. Lynn and Hailey also worked with
family and friends to donate Bibles, hats, and scarves.
Because of the generosity of Courthouse Fitness
members, over 400 men, women and children
who are being served at UGM of Salem received
Christmas gifts.
Over 130 volunteers gave of their time to provide
special Christmas festivities for the men, women,
and children at UGM.
Find out how you can join
with UGM to offer help and hope
to hungry, hurting and homeless
men, women and children.
