Tackle Hunger
Souper Bowl Lunch &
Annual Meeting
Sunday, February 1
11:15 a.m.—12:15 p.m. - Fellowship Hall
More than 20 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a
single youth group:
“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game,
help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat”
More than $98 million has been raised for local charities across the country through the Souper
Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around the Super
Bowl weekend into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving.
Starmount will celebrate with a free Souper Bowl Lunch after church. We just ask that you
consider making an offering for Greensboro Urban Ministry, Starmount’s 2015 Souper Bowl of
Caring ministry partner of choice, to help end hunger.
During lunch we will also conduct the Annual Meeting of the congregation by hearing ministry
highlights of 2014, receiving the 2015 budget and voting on the proposed changes of call for our
pastoral staff.
Mardi Gras Dinner & Bingo
Wednesday February 11, 5:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.
Breakfast for dinner! Think "Fat Tuesday" on a Wednesday.
After dinner, there will be BINGO with great prizes. This
is an intergenerational (all ages welcome) event. We will
have childcare available for those too young to enjoy
Bingo.
Our menu will include: pancakes, sausage, fruit etc.
Please make a reservation for dinner by February 9.

In addition to being the spouse of Starmount
member, Jane Meeks, Ken is also a teaching

Starmount Handbell Inscriptions
In December, our new octave of handbells
was dedicated to the glory of God for the
enrichment of our musical worship at
Starmount. Many of our music participants
and supporters donated money for these
new bells and the inscriptions below are to
honor those in whose names they presented
these bells.
We are grateful to those who gave the bells
and to those whom they honor. May all of
Starmount’s music be to glorify God and to
enrich the worship of our congregation.

Faith Goes to the Movies:
The Sequel!
Back by popular demand,
Rev. Emily Enders Odom
returns to us to prove that
a good movie can be more than just a few hours’
entertainment. It can be a powerful vehicle for
exploring our faith in the context of our lives.
Using clips from selected movies and reflecting
on related Scripture passages, we will enter into
a dialogue with film, experiencing “holy humor”
and God’s surprises, while also examining such
theological issues as suffering, grief, reconciliation, and grace. Information/Registration Brochures are available at the Welcome desk in
the lobby and online. Deadline: Sunday,
February 15.

In Action
Preschool Sunday School Teachers and Nursery Workers
Who are they? They’re the folks “who look after
the sheep,” the littlest angels, our dear children.
In the nursery for most Sunday mornings and
most of our meeting times when childcare is
needed, we find Anne Thorn, Lucy Hammer
and Brandy Madujibeya right where we need
them to be. Even though Lucy and Brandy
have weekday jobs involving children this age,
both say they love children and enjoy being
with them enough to do it some more! Lucy
is a “child of our church” so it’s wonderful that
she can pass on the gift of sharing through the
next generation of that family. Brandy now
has her own son this age so he joins her when
she’s here. Anne says, even though it’s not
her weekday job, she loves children and loves
learning about the new ones; it’s also something she feels she can do for the church.
These may be our paid workers but they
could only do it because of their deep love
for children.
A little farther down the hall we find Leslie
Webb, Anna Crabtree, Tracie Fitzpatrick,
Jinny Buchanan, Vicki and Matt Winters,
Evelyn Nadler, Cindy Lee, Sonia Chhuani
and/or Nancy Wallace. These are some of
our wonderful, we-couldn’t-do-it-without-you
volunteers. Some of us simply could not do
what these folks do. Many like children but
teaching, herding, ministering to this age is not
their thing. These people LOVE children.
Jinny Buchanan is a nurse and a mom. She
echoes that she loves getting to know the
young ones in the church. In a way, she gets
to do a pass-it-on since her son grew up in the
church and others have been there for him.
Tracie Fitzpatrick is also a child of Starmount.
She says she has “a heart for children” and
feels this is one way she can pass on that
heart to our Starmount little ones. A special
comment was that teaching them allows her
to revisit the familiar Bible stories and see
them again, but new, through the eyes of the
children.
We’ve even had a mother-son team in Vicki and
Matt (V) Winters. Vicki says, since she especially
loves doing arts and crafts, it was a good fit for
her as a helper. She had grown up doing crafts
with her grandmother and then with her own
children and the children were so sweet,
it was fun.
Evelyn is a self-professed numbers person but
is a little-people person as well. She’s been a
member here for 25 years and taught Sunday
School when her children were little. Now she
thinks of others’ children as sweet and enjoyable to teach and to know. She’s another who
feels that’s a way she can get to know the
younger families of the church.
Cindy Lee qualifies as a “go-to” person. She
not only directs our Weekday Preschool
Leslie says now that her children are well past Program, she also helps many times when we
this age she just wants to be with this crew of need activities, help with, and energy for our
3 and 4-year-olds. She has an abiding passion little ones. You’ll learn more about them in an

Cliff Chang
Cliff was born in Taiwan
but has lived in the U.S.
since age two when his
parents moved to Connecticut. He lived there
until he left to attend Virginia Tech where he received a degree in Business. After graduation
in 2003 he began working in Connecticut as a
business consultant. In 2010 Cliff moved to
Boston and got a job as a project manager for
Akamai Technologies, which was a smart
move. (Akamai means intelligent in Hawaiian.)
In 2012 Cliff and Emily Edwards, daughter of
James and Nancy Edwards, were married.
They met in Boston and continue to live there.
Cliff and Emily enjoy travel and having dinner
with friends. Cliff is a golfer. They are both close
to their families and get together with them
quite often.
Jack Sills
Jack came to North Carolina at an early age. He
was soon adopted and
after a short time living in
Burlington his parents
moved to Greensboro
which is where he has
spent most of his life. Jack went through school
here and after graduation from high school he
attended Elon University and the University of
Georgia where he obtained degrees in Finance
and Business Management.
Jack’s career has been spent in sales. He has
worked here in Greensboro and in Charlotte
usually dealing with hospitals and doctors
primarily in the sale of medical instruments.
When not working Jack has several interests
that occupy his time. He said he loves to write,
read the Bible and cook. Also, he said he has
been interested in photography since 9th grade
and is especially interested in taking pictures of
nature when visiting the beach.
Jack has some chronic medical issues which he
has mentioned in church, but he has a strong
faith that God is with him. He has a positive attitude
and said he plans to have a good year.
Barbara (Barb) Newbauer
Barb was born in Florida
but spent most of her years
through college and then
most of her employment in
the New England area
(MA, CT and ME).
After college Barb and her husband, Rick,
moved to a small town in Maine to raise a family
and enjoy nature. She was employed by the
Social Security Administration, a position she
held throughout her career. After thirty years in
Maine she and Rick decided to try city life and
so moved to Baltimore where they lived for
several years. They moved to Greensboro to be
near their two sons who are married and with
children for grandparents to visit. (continued)

Barb continues to work from home two days a
week writing policy for the Social Security
Administration. When not so employed she
likes to write poetry, attend Yoga classes and

Here in Greensboro they especially enjoy living
downtown where they can walk to many places.
