Kurt Vonnegut offered these thoughts to consider as we review
the past year and look ahead to the next …
Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard.
Do not let the pain make you hate.
Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness.
Take pride that even though the rest of the world
may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.
from ann amrhein …
As some of you have noticed I have not been on site full day most
of this year. Trying to balance caring for an aging parent and chronically ill family member and the increasing responsibilities I was trying to
handle as Director had become overwhelming in spite of the help and
support with which I am blessed at home and at the Preschool. So the
responsibilities for day to day operations started shifting quite naturally
to Celeste Lawton — of whom I am so proud and blessed by her presence
in my life and the life of this Preschool!
God has shown us that He is definitely not done with this program, but it had become clear that the work He called me to do for the
preschool was done; that it was time for someone else to do the work of
the next phase of His vision and that someone is Celeste. She has without
hesitation answered His call and with the full support of the church family and staff family will now lead this staff and program through this next
phase of God’s vision whatever that may be with the same love, care,
dedication and enthusiasm of her predecessors .
It is with a grateful heart that I thank Pastor Dick and my church
family for electing to establish the positon of Director Emeritus which
allows me and those who are chosen to follow me the privilege and honor
of continuing to answer God’s call to serve Him through this program as
a sounding board, comforter, supporter, advisor and helper to the Director, staff, parents and children. For me it just doesn’t get any better than
that!
Things will continue to change as God’s plan keeps unfolding for
me and the Preschool of that there is no doubt. For now I can work a
more flexible schedule which will let me work from home mornings and
on site in the afternoons. I look forward to continuing to handle the enrollment process and working with new families when they visit; to working on the Master Plan Committee for the Preschool and being a resource for families with parenting questions and concerns, all things I
love doing and for which I have a passion.
God may shut a door we thought or hoped would never shut, but
when He does He always opens another because God is good! All the
time … aamrhein

December and January have been busy months in our class. We used our hand prints and foot prints to
make Santas, snowmen, snowflakes and a ground hog. We also made Christmas trees and a bell ornament.
We have enjoyed looking at the bright colors in the books our teachers read to us, singing songs, stroller
rides and most of all - snuggling with our teachers! We said "good-bye" to our friends Breckan and Paxton
as they moved to the Toddler classroom and welcomed new friends Dean Valenti, Aubree Evenson and
Philip Wehunt. Our Tots have realized they really enjoy “food”. We enjoy picking up our food to feed ourselves. Ravioli, sweet potatoes, peas, and carrots are some of our favorites!
Toddler News. . .

We spent December exploring Christmas traditions around the world as well as those of our own families;
hearing the legend of the candy cane and a Germany/Ukrainian folktale about how the Christmas spider
decorates the Christmas tree with its silvery web; making gingerbread boys and girls and those very special
gifts for our moms and dads. We had a grand time at our Christmas party and thank Bailey’s dad, Audrey’s
mom and Hector’s parents for joining us! January found some of our orange classroom toddlers moving to
the teal classroom so we could welcome new friends - Breckan Durrett, Paxton Shaw & Cora-Dean Fletcher- who were ready to move from the Tots program to the Toddler program. The transition went smoothly
and everyone adjusted nicely to their new surroundings and routines thanks to pre-move preparations of the
teachers and support of all the parents! We were sad to say good-bye to our friend Ava Luong for the remainder of the school year, but look forward to seeing her during the Summer Camps program! Jude
Gilmer is now with us every day! Once things were all settled our teachers introduced us to winter and the
Arctic and had us making penguins, polar bears and snowmen. We also learned about different forms of
transportation, playing with our trucks and cars in some edible mud. It was decided to keep the tree in the
Preschool office up all year and let each program pick a month to decorate it. We picked January and
turned it into a giant snowman! We’ve had a great time finding new ways to get our exercise inside when it
is too cold to go outside. We love dancing and running to our special music in the fellowship hall. We have
had so much fun looking at the snow outside and testing to see just how cold it is. Now we’ll roll on into
February and more adventures ...

December was a month full of happiness, joy and anticipation. We made lots of wonderful things and learned
that Christmas is about celebrating Jesus’ birth. We learned how friends around the world celebrate Jesus’
birth and Christmas. We loved listening to and singing Christmas songs especially the ones Mrs. Gill taught
us ... “There was a Little Baby” and “Go Tell it on the Mountain”! Our Christmas party was so much fun.
We were sad to say good-bye to our friend Trianna and happy to welcome Max Epp and Dexter Scully 5
days. We had a fantastic beginning to the New Year! We celebrated winter making penguins, snowflakes,
and snowmen. We are hoping that maybe we’ll get a chance to make a snowman outside too! Mrs. Gill has
been teaching us new winter songs, the “Snowky Pokey” being our favorite! Ms. Spalding has been reading
books about snowmen, penguins and polar bears. We are practicing how to sit in our monthly chapel service
to listen to the story and sing the songs with the older classes. They are doing an awesome job and we are
very proud of them! We are so proud of our friends who returned after Christmas break potty trained! Thank
you parents for all of your support at home to keep the training consistent. Now we are looking forward to
February! Be sure to check your child’s folder for information regarding our Valentine echange, as well as
our “Teddy Bear Tea” celebrating Valentine’s Day. The weather continues to remind us it’s still winter so
please make sure to keep a pair of gloves and a hat if they don’t have a hood on their coat in your child’s
backpack. We do our best to get outside every day. Thank you for sharing your children with us ...

from Ms Lara & Ms Regina’s Green classroom … We enjoyed many Christmas activities during
December especially sharing the story of Jesus' birth with the children. The children loved playing with our
class nativity set, doing Christmas crafts, sharing the plans their families had for spending time together and
the joy of giving and receiving gifts. When we all returned in January we were happy to see each other and
play together again. We have enjoyed learning about the winter season and polar environments. We made
art with colored ice cubes, artificial snow by adding salt to a ‘snow fluff’ mixture and playing with the
“chilly” powder in our sensory box. We ended the month exploring many types of transportation vehicles.
We talked about their purposes and ways they work. It was fun driving our toy trucks through brown paint
to make muddy tire tracks and the children enjoyed playing matching games that featured vehicles and arctic animals. Our class is looking forward to February and our Valentine’s celebration. We’ll be discussing
many American presidents and learning about dental care and discovering more about our five senses.
from Mrs. Johnson & Ms Caitlin’s BLUE classroom … .December was a quick month! We
started the month with letter “V” and making pictures of vegetables, a vest, violets in a vase and a volcano!
The rest of the month found us spending our days involved in Christmas activities – telling the story of Jesus’ birth, sharing our lists for Santa and figuring out about his reindeer. We had a wonderful time making
lots of Christmas crafts and ornaments to bring home. We practiced our songs for our Christmas program
and looked forward to the fun party on our last day before the Christmas break. When we were all back on
January 5, we got right back into the swing of things. We kicked off the month learning about letter “W”
and all things winter. We made snowman pictures, read books about winter, made watches and worm pictures. The next week we learned about letter “I” making igloos, ice cream cones and playing with ice cubes.
We talked about animals that hibernate in winter and read several stories about them. Next we talked about
arctic animals and letter “A”. We made a snowy owl, a polar bear, and a penguin. We wrapped up the January with the letter “B” and transportation making buses and bicycles. Remember to send your child in clothing suitable for play outdoors. As long as it is not too cold or wet, we plan to burn off some energy every
day on the playground! We said good-bye to Scarlett Ashby and her family. They moved to Berryville, VA.
from Ms Josie&Ms Juana’s PURPLE class… During December we talked about the letter “V”,
did some fun crafts and activities and learned the meaning of the words volunteering and giving, that when
we do these we are helping others. We celebrated Christmas traditions from around the world... “Zwarte
Pete” from the Netherlands left treats in our shoes, Italy’s “La Befana” put goodies in our stockings, to celebrate Santa Lucia Day we made candle headdresses to wear caroling around the school, during Los Posadas
we acted out Mary & Joseph asking for shelter in which baby Jesus may be born. We pretended to be elves
in our own Santa Workshop making and wrapping Christmas toys. We glittered ornaments, decorated gingerbread cookies and made Christmas cards in Santa’s Post Office. We read the “Night Before Christmas”
and found surprises from Santa under our tree the next school day. Our Christmas Pajama Party was the
best! Most important we learned the real reason for the season - to celebrate Jesus’ birth. We had a special
birthday party for Jesus, read the story of how Jesus was born in Bethlehem and took turns acting out the
story with our Nativity characters. We have learned how much God loves us. In January we have been busy
with the letters “W, I, A & B” and using "Handwriting Without Tears" to help us learn to form letters
through fun activities. We had our own Winter Wonderland full of snow activities. We visited the Arctic to
study penguins and polar bears and learn how they live. We went ice fishing, made food coloring ice cubes
and experienced ice painting and explored the concept of melting. We spent "Transportation Week" making
vehicles, figuring what sound matches each vehicle, what job it does and how it helps our world. We played
with our transportation cars and used our imaginations to build roads, mountains and railroad tracks. We
can’t wait to see what February has in store for us...
Pre-K News
Page 4
from Mrs. Colpo/Pre-K 1… What an exciting December we had! I think the children started getting
excited in October with Halloween and it did not stop until Christmas! Their excitement is infectious and as
a teacher that is the best gift by itself. Since being back we have worked on the letters “A, W, I” explored
hibernation, arctic animals, winter and snow. The children are all doing well writing their names now on all
the papers that they do in class. They are working hard on listening, following directions, obeying class and
school rules, being a good friend and keeping up with the pace of the classroom all of which will be a huge
help during their adjustment to being a Kindergartener. We are looking forward to February and our Heart
To Heart breakfast, Valentines, and the 100th day of School Celebration.
from Ms Kathryn/Pre-K 2 … During December we “traveled” around the world learning how children
in other countries celebrate Christmas. We began by learning about Sinterklaas Day, then Santa Lucia Day,
Los Posadas, La Befana, Christmas trees from Germany, Father Christmas from England, Pere Noel from
France and the miracle of the oil with Hanukkah. My favorite country is Australia where most Australians
spend Christmas with their families having a Christmas dinner at the beach, swimming in their swimming
pools and playing Cricket in their backyards. On Christmas Eve tens of thousands gather to light up the
night sky with candles and sing their favorite carols for "Carols by Candlelight". We also worked every day
on decorations for our family Christmas trees and making that special card and gift for our Moms and Dads.
We returned to school after the New Year with hugs and smiles for each other after being on break. We celebrated 2015 with a "Dance Party" and ringing bells. We've been singing songs, learning about winter, different animals, reptiles, birds, insects and what they do during these cold months to survive. We learned about
ice and why it freezes, with an unexpected snow/ice day to reinforce our discoveries. During transportation
week we worked on the letters "B" and "Z" as we zoomed, zipped, and zinged our way around the room with
our buses, trains, cars, bikes, and planes. We continue to have "Show-n-Tell" an activity that all the children
enjoy when it’s their turn to stand before their friends and share their special item. A schedule for Feb. until
Spring Break was sent home in your child’s red folder. We’ll be learning about “G”(Feb 6); “V”(Feb 13);
“L” & “W”(Feb 20); ‘things you can smell”(Feb 27); “R”(Mar 6); “R”(Mar 13); your child’s favorite book
(Mar 19); “U”(Mar 27); “E”(Apr 3). Everyone stay healthy! Blessings to each and every one of you and
your children.
from Mrs.Oliver/Pre-K 3 … We stayed very busy during December making decorations and taking
“trips” to Australia, Germany, and France to learn how Christmas is celebrated in those countries. Our favorite visit was to Australia where we enjoyed a “picnic on the beach”! In France we talked about the Nativity
and we learned the Christmas tree originated in Germany. We used letter “J” for Jesus and our American
traditions. We continued to work on letters, playing games and doing worksheets to reinforce their sounds.
We are journaling a little each week about what we do in class. In January we worked on the letters “W, I,
A, and B”. We learned signs for words that begin with those letters...watermelon, igloo, interrupt, apple, astronaut, ball and balloon. One of the children’s favorite activities was creating a web out of yarn. We all sat
in the floor with a yarn ball and named “W” words while rolling the ball to our friends. By the time everyone had a turn, we had created a giant web on the floor. We also enjoyed playing with balloons, watching
how a balloon would actually “float” over the air coming up from a fan. It was “magical!” Our letter art projects included alligators, bubble painting and igloos. Winter, snow, ice and arctic animals were topics of discussion and we had a great time painting with frozen paint pops, having a “white” picnic, an indoor
“snowstorm,” and playing in the sensory table with “icebergs” and arctic animal figures. For transportation
week we had fun painting with cars, building train tracks and “driving” following road rules during our
“Stop & Go” game. We are looking forward to February, our Heart-to-Heart breakfast, Valentine exchange
and the celebration of our 100th Day of School!
Page 5
from Mrs James/PreK Specialty Centers … It was great to see you all at the beginning of the month
for the children’s Christmas program. We enjoyed concluding the program with “This Little Light of Mine”
since the show was rescheduled at the end of Epiphany week. We had spent time talking about Jesus being the
light of the world and incorporating light themes when possible. Our bible verse on this subject was John 8:12.
I n th e Ma t h / S c i en ce C e n t e r Christmas light sorting, counting, estimating and patterning were all favorites during the month of December. We continue our ongoing work with the parts of the clock. Some children are already able to label the clock hands! We related the 12 numbers/hours on the clock to twelve days. I
told them the story of the “12 Days of Christmas” song and we enjoyed it as a musical math game. During
“V” week in Science, we made a tornado in a bottle and talked about the “vortex” of the tornado. We also
played with ramps and discussed “velocity”. In January we enjoyed talking about diurnal and nocturnal animals. We also enjoyed experimenting with a light table, making patterns with lights and bears as well.
I n th e Mu s i c C en t er Our December Bible reading came from Luke 2:10-14. After reading we sang special carols about angels, shepherds and Jesus ... “Rise up Shepherd and Follow”, “The Friendly Beasts”, “Oh
Jerusalem”, “Away in a Manger”, “O Come All Ye Faithful (Fr./Eng.)”, “Silent Night (Fr. Eng.)”, “Joy to the
World”, “The Little Drummer Boy”, “The First Nowell” and “Hark the Herald”. “Pa Rum Pa Pum Pumming”
with coffee can drums was an all around favorite as well as circle dancing to “The Friendly Beasts”. We added dramatic play during Epiphany week with a great Harry Connick, Jr. version of “We Three Kings”. Children took turns following the star through the desert dressed like the Wise Men carrying their gifts to this
jazzy piano accompaniment. We are practicing whistling and marching and enjoying creative movement to
Mardi Gras tunes all season long. So far we have focused on Cajun French Mardi Gras with “Two-Step Mamou” and the “Eunice Two-Step”. Wash-boarding during “W” week and air-accordions during “A” week
were sights to behold! Your children love this French music! We have listened to some interesting instruments
like the Jaleika, a Russian wind instrument. We traveled to the Russian wilderness in our minds’ eye, and listened to the Jaleika while practicing some yoga poses. We worked on an original song during “A” week that is
an African spin-off of “Old MacDonald”. The children loved the story-telling elements of this number and did
a fantastic job with patting the rhythm on their knees.
I n th e F r e n ch C en te r We worked on setting the table and food items in French and December was the
perfect time to relate these vocabulary words to French Christmas traditions (especially “Le Réveillon”, the
huge Christmas feast that follows Midnight Mass). We acted out what Noël/Christmas might be like in a
French household. From singing French carols at midnight during church to opening presents in “les
chausseurs/shoes” under the “le sapin de Noël/Christmas Tree, this time for dramatic play was “chouette/
great”! Classes have enjoyed singing “Vive le Vent/Jingle Bells” as well as a movie in French about the
Christmas story. We have worked on “Days of the Week/Months of the Year songs”. We always enjoy singing
“ABC” and “Jesus Loves Me” in French. The children love it especially when “Leo, the Letter Lion” makes
these song requests. We spent time talking about Wallonia, the Francophone region in Belgium for “W” week.
We also spent time in “A” week talking about some of the French countries in Africa. Counting the countries
that speak French with “Nina, the Number Elephant” was fun!

from Mrs. Spalding’s Library & Chapel Time… With the ending of the holidays and the beginning of a new year, the library has put away the holiday decorations and embraced snow and winter. We
have read classics like Frosty, Jack Frost and The Snowman, all of which still delight children of all ages.
To add a bit of excitement I interspersed newer books with winter stories about our favorite characters like
Little Bear, the Princesses, 101 Dalmatians and of course Elsa, Anna and Olaf. The children have become
more discerning in their book check out, taking more time to investigate several books before choosing one
to take with them. All the children love library time, from the 2 year olds to the Prek and that is a wonderful
seed planted that I hope will never cease to grow. Our library is a cozy, wonderful place to listen and read
about winter. The theme for January’s chapel service was Epiphany. I shared Tomie dePaola’s book “The
Three Wise Kings” with the children followed by a short message about giving our greatest gift to God - our
love. Mrs. Gill and her amazing tambourine led us in singing “This Little Light of Mine” and “Praise Ye the
Lord!”. All the children sang and clapped along and it was truly wonderful. Our prayer was led by Ms. Emily one of the Toddler teachers. PreK’s Ms Kathryn played quiet children’s hymns on the piano to assist the
children in entering and leaving quietly and respectfully. We have chapel monthly on a Wednesday. It starts
at 9:30 am and is over by 10:00 am. Chapel is a short, sweet, extremely uplifting experience and adds joy to
our whole day!
from Mrs. Gill’s Tots to Preschool Music … The TOTS and TODDLERS celebrated Christmas by
singing and jingling bells to our Christmas songs. For the TOTS and youngest TODDLERS we used small
jingle bells in recycled bottles. The older TODDLERS were able to use the wrist bells. The PLAYGROUP
and the PRESCHOOL used the wrist bells and the rhythm sticks to accompany their Christmas songs. Have
you heard them singing and spelling S-A-N-T-A? We learned There Was a Little Baby and Go Tell It On the
Mountain and sang them during our December chapel service. In the PRESCHOOL classes we did some yoga poses related to the story of Jesus' birth. Easy pose was used to represent Mary, the quiet, gentle mother
of Jesus. Mountain pose represented Joseph--tall and strong and protective of his family. The cat pose represented the sheep in the stable. For baby Jesus we did the happy baby pose and the child pose. You would be
surprised at how quiet and centered the children become as we do our yoga poses and breathing. The 3-day
PRESCHOOL class is not here on Mr. Norvell's days, so we do movement activities as part of our music
class. This month we did The Freeze Dance with the jingle bells. We also moved around the room in different ways as dictated by the different styles of music in Greg and Steve's Listen and Move. In February I
hope to do some nursery rhymes with the children in addition to our snow and Valentine songs. February is
also dental health month so listen for songs about brushing your teeth! Two more of Dr. Jean's Reasons to
Sing Every Day: # 5. Songs and chants are a natural way to develop oral language and auditory memory and
# 6. Poems and songs lay a foundation for fluency and enhance short term memory.
from Mr Norvell’s Move It … I CAN’T DO THAT…IT’S TOO HARD! I’m sure, as a parent,
when you ask and maybe even challenge your child to perform a task (regardless of the degree of difficulty),
you’ve heard at least one, if not perhaps all three of the following responses: “I don’t want to.” “It’s too
hard.” “No!” I mention this because I realized something. Back in September, when things were new and
not so familiar, I would get one or more of these as a response to challenging the children to do something in
“Move It” class. Then by November, I rarely heard these at all. Now, here we are in a new year, and these
phrases have returned; accompanied by an additional one, “I can’t do that.” And I realize that it’s because
they’re growing, yet again, and being challenged to perform not only the more difficult, but even the familiar
movements more proficiently. Most times, they don’t even know why they’re responding the way they are.
It could be for any number of reasons. But then, as I paused and observed more closely, they are simply acting like most of us do when we’re confronted with something that requires some kind of change. It’s interesting, because at the beginning of the month they began reacting this way. Now weeks later, they verbally
give the same responses, but physically are doing what is required. Children are a wonderful reminder of
how GOD’S BLESSINGS are new every day. That regardless of the habits that we develop, we can and do
continue to grow, despite changes. So, now I’m looking forward to February.

Ms Kathryn&Ms Spalding… Early arrival is going very well with children coming in and settling into
their chosen "Centers" or snuggling into a lap for a few extra hugs. We do need your help with…
Personal toys & stickers: as stated in our Par ent Handbook/pg 6 “Children are not to bring personal
toys to Preschool unless asked to do so by their teacher.” Toys and stickers are causing sharing issues, hurt
feelings and present the possibility of loss or damage. When the children transition to their designated
classes for the day, they need to do that without upsets and tears that were avoidable and set the tone for
the rest of their day.
Coats: leave your child’s coat on their hook with their back pack. They do not need it on in the fellowship hall.
Water: let your child get water befor e you br ing them to the Fellowship Hall.
Thank you for helping us make every morning a good one for every child.
Mrs. Parent … The afternoon groups started January with winter & hibernation as our theme. We read
the book Bear Snores On and Hibernation Station. We talked about why animals hibernate and which animals actually do hibernate. That led us to our next theme … SNOW. We made snowmen, snow globes and
even had fun playing with pretend snow inside. Arctic animals followed with our learning about where
they live and how they blend in with their environment. To wrap up January, we enjoyed talking about
transportation, making cars out of toilet paper rolls, boats and playing transportation games. February is
going to be a great month as we focus on Dental Health with books, crafts, and songs about taking care of
our teeth and of course Valentine's Day. We will go outside weather permitting so be sure to send your
child in appropriate clothing for outside play. When the weather is not permitting, we do indoor activities
to get some energy out.
from Mrs. Porter … In December we brought back the sweet potato in the form of sweet potato pancakes and they were a big hit with 9 out of 10 classrooms at 100% participation. We also tried raw broccoli with ranch dressing and then cooked broccoli. We had 100% participation in 6 of the 10 classes and only
1 or 2 in each of the other classrooms did not try the broccoli.
Recipe of the Month: Sweet Potato Pancakes
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons melted butter
4 teaspoons baking powder Pinch of nutmeg
2 whole eggs
2 tablespoons brown sugar 2 cups milk
1 sweet potato, cooked until tender peeled and
pureed or canned sweet potato puree
In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Whisk until smooth. Heat skillet or griddle to medium high.
Cook approximately ½ cup batter per pancake in buttered skillet until bubbles form on the surface, then
flip over and cook until dark golden brown. Serve with honey butter and maple syrup.
During January we tried some new and different vegetables ...green beans, cucumbers and celery. Green
beans were the hit of the month with 3 classrooms at 100% and the majority of children in the other classrooms giving them a try. Cucumbers with dill dip were a close second with 2 classes at 100% and all but
one child out of each of the other classrooms not trying them. “Ants on a log” using celery with cream
cheese and raisins was the least favorite with one class at 100%, one class that did not try them at all and
most of the other classes had only 2 or 3 children trying them.
Recipe of the Month: Creamy Dill Dip
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese ½ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons milk (optional)
¼ cup sour cream
2 tablespoons dill weed
In a medium bowl, blend cream cheese and sour cream with an electric mixer until smooth. Mix in salt and
dill weed. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to blend flavors. If the dip is too thick after chilling, stir in
milk 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
Healthy Eating! Keep up the good work at home!!
